A Buckeye’s Road to Rio

Hope you are having a great summer and that you are especially enjoying the summer sports. We at Motsag are in the midst of a re-invigoration to become a premier destination of Buckeye related sports journalism. Until we re-launch we are keeping you up to date on all the interesting football camp tidbits we come across, for current and past Buckeyes.

This week we will be adding a daily piece as a lead up to one Buckeye’s quest for gold–wrestler Buckeye Kyle Snyder. You may or may not have noticed, but Motsag has been the most prolific news outlet covering Buckeye wrestling. Not only have we reported live from B1G and NCAA tournaments (including last year’s NCAA Championship at Madison Square Garden), but we have been at every single event leading to Buckeye Kyle Snyder’s ascension to become the youngest World Wrestling Champion in US history.

We covered the 2015 US Open when Kyle eschewed competing in the Junior World Division, beating the defending Olympic Champion (London 2012) Jake Varner. We were present in July, 2015 when Kyle repeated the feat at the US Team Trials sending him to the World Championships.

We witnessed one of the colossal feats of sport as teenager Kyle Snyder out-thought, cajoled and man-handled seasoned champions to become Champion of the World. In April, 2016 we were in Iowa City to see Snyder hold back the last reach for glory by Jake Varner at the Olympic Trials.

So after breaking our arm congratulating ourselves, who better to warm you up for witnessing what could be more history–something we do not take for granted. As good as Kyle is and has proven to be, winning a gold medal is a whole new mountain to climb.

We will not be taking a break from football. We are on the case. But you should know that football and wrestling have strong links. Buckeye grid iron stars such as Luke Fickel were wrestling champs. Luke is a frequent fixture at OSU wrestling events.

Matt Finkes, another wrestling champion actually works hard helping the Ohio Regional Training Center, which supports Kyle and other Ohio State greats, such as Logan Stieber, Reece Humphrey and JD Bergman. And let’s not forget Olympic medalist hopeful and honorary Buckeye (and new OSU assistant wrestling coach) heavyweight Tervel Dlagnev who has trained for years at the Ohio Regional Training Center.

During OSU’s epic 2015 run to its first national wrestling title, one of their biggest fans was Urban Meyer who was present on the floor and the bench in the Buckeye’s B1G Championship at St. John’s Arena two weeks prior.

And then there was this old, great wrestler and occasional football dabbler, Archie Griffin.

We turned down the opportunity to report from Rio–something I will surely regret in a few years, but we will have lots of live coverage and an occasional check-in from Buckeye Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan. Stay posted.

The Dream 17: Urban Meyer’s Stranglehold on the Recruiting Game Part II

UrbsAnother week closer to the College Football season and Coach Urban Meyer and his band of merry men have been taking the recruiting world by storm.  Their status, whether committed or uncommitted–THEY WILL FIND YOU!  Coach Meyer and his coaches have been building a perennial juggernaut and this class is just the start of the warpath that they have been committed to for the duration of Meyer’s tenure at Ohio State.  It seem as if though there aren’t any boundaries, no limit to this coaching staff’s reach.  They can pull from just about any part of the country for either top tier talents or the Darron Lee’s and Ezekiel Elliott’s of the recruiting world.  You flatly just never know until they immerse themselves and adopt the culture that is in place at Ohio State.  Here is another installment of The Dream 17.  Enjoy!

J.K. Dobbins:

Dobbins

J.K. Dobbins is one of those running backs that remind you of the great ones.  The Zeke’s, the El Guapo’s the Beanie’s and the Boom’s that hold a special place in all Buckeyes fans hearts.  He is the reigning Sparq rating champion and he looks to play the part on when he gets an opportunity to show out in the Scarlet and Gray.  Dobbins hails from La Grange, Texas and stand at a solid 5-9.5, 199 lbs.  Once he enrolls and goes through the rigors of Coach Marotti’s strength and conditioning program, I fully expect him to grow into his frame and pack on a ton of muscle.  He has made some noise about the potential for fellow running back Cam Akers joining him at Ohio State and if Buckeye recruiting vets have been paying attention, it eerily similar to the Four Star, 12th overall Running Back Ezekiel Elliott or Five Star 4th overall Running Back Derrick Green.  Hope that it does not come to that because this kid is going to be a beast for years to come.  He can do it all, just like Zeke so hopefully, he sticks with the Buckeyes regardless of the persistent chatter that he may eventually flip because the depth at running back took a huge hit with the dismissal of Brionte’ Dunn this off-season.  Tote Nation needs you J.K., with or without Cam.

Isaiah Pryor:

Pryor

I don’t care what you say but Ohio State can be called and considered as DBU.  With Buckeye greats ranging from the various era’s, Arnie Chonko, Neal Colzie, Tim Fox, Ray Griffin, Mike Sensibaugh, Shawn Springs, Antoine Winfield, Jack Tatum, Chris Gamble, Malcolm Jenkins, Kurt Coleman, and more recently Vonn Bell and Eli Apple who both left early for the NFL.  Pryor look to continue to uphold the legacy of all the Buckeye greats.  He comes from the IMG Academy and stands at 6-1.5, 195 lbs.  He is a rangy prospect and he is versatile enough to play both cornerback and either safety spot.  He can wreak havoc against the run, being able to shed blocks while still being able to play in coverage.  The sky is the limit with Pryor and seeing that he has been on board for a while now, I feel that he is securely in the plans for the Buckeyes future.  He is talented and is an able learner.  He will take guidance from Coach Schiano upon his arrival.  He will look to secure playing time and he will surely try to vie for time against oft-injured upperclassmen that have been in the program longer.  You never know during the offseason, so it will be an exciting time to see who the next great Buckeye Defensive Back will be or if we will have multiple emerge.

Tate Martell:

Martell

The rich get richer and with Ohio State, they have lost both Braxton Miller and Cardale Jones to the draft and with J.T. Barrett returning along with Stephen Collier (out for season with torn ACL), Joey Burrow, Quarterback turned Wide Receiver Torrance Gibson and incoming Freshman Dwayne Haskins, the Buckeyes add two more, if they stay and one of them is Tate Martell out of Las Vegas, Nevada.  Yes, rumors per another recruit state that one of the two will not be a part of the Dream 17, but until something is confirmed, it is all heresy.  Martell is 5-10.5, 203 lbs and he is often compared to Johnny Manziel, which is flattering when comparing playing styles, but hopefully he hates to party.  Martell is the #1 Dual-Threat Quarterback and if he lives up to the hype, he could be the next Troy Smith.  He is just as accurate while passing the rock as he is when he is making a mad dash for the first down or for the touchdown.  He looks to be a key piece of this class and if Ohio State needed it, he can also recruit.  While at The Opening he was seen regularly with top-tier prospects attempting to get them to join him in this class.  Two of those targets make their decisions at the end of the month and he is not going to stop until the Buckeyes secure the top class for this one and for years to come.

Haskell Garrett:

Garrett

Haskell Garrett is another mammoth, with huge potential and upside that the Buckeyes have plucked away from the West Coast.  Garrett hails from Las Vegas, Nevada and is teammates with Tate Martell.  Garrett is 6-2, 298 and looks like the part and oh, he plays like his head is on fire.  At The Opening, he wrecked some of the top rated offensive linemen prospects and held his own for the duration of the drills.  With Coach Marotti’s program, he will turn into highly sought after high school prospect to the next Adolphus Washington, Michael Bennett or Jonathan Hankins that will wreak havoc for offensive lines in the BIG 10.  This kid is already a wrecking ball and with the correct guidance from Coach Fickell and Coach Johnson, he will develop like all the other prospects who committed and who had embraced the ways at Ohio State.  Look at Sam Hubbard and Tyquan Lewis.  They waited and look at them now.  They developed and forced their way into a starting position.  Garrett will do the same and who knows, he might beat out the upperclassmen placed above him.  He has the tools, the aggression and the potential to shoot up the depth chart.  He just has to work at it and he will be the next Buckeye great on the inside of the defensive line.

Urban

There is a lot to be excited about for this recruiting class and there is a potential for fireworks and possibly another huge run when landing additional prospect to seal the deal and ensure that the Buckeyes dethrone Alabama atop the recruiting ranks.  Although there is still a ton of time left, I will not let myself make hasty notions or statements prior to National Signing Day.  There can be twists and turns (Johnny Townsend, Carlton Davis) and until then, I will continue to dish out on the Dream 17 and beyond.  Hope you enjoyed!  Go Bucks!  O-H!

The Dream 17: Urban Meyer’s Stranglehold on the Recruiting Game

Here is my first installment of The Dream 17:  Urban Meyer’s Stranglehold on the Recruiting Game.  I will be giving you a brief summary of four (04) committed recruits over the next couple of weeks and after all are mentioned, I will go over the remaining needs for the staff and the remaining targets, then I will eventually branch off into the 2018 Class.  Enjoy!

Meyer Ohio State

Coach Urban Meyer’s and his Ohio State Buckeyes are a team that is transitioning away from a team that has had tremendous success on the gridiron, winning 50 games against 4 losses.  Coach Meyer’s success shouldn’t be measured by wins and losses, but the overall health of his football team.  Success in the classroom, success on the field and most importantly, success on the recruiting trail.  As of late, Urban and company have been winning at every level, and they have been winning BIG.  Take a long, hard look at the current recruiting class, the class of 2017.  He is lighting it up and he is clearly getting commitments from just about anyone that he wants, commits from anyone who he envisions having the Buckeye spirit.  Potential prospects who demonstrate traits of the Buckeye Culture and who are willing to live the lifestyle that Coach Meyer and company want their players adopt is one reason why this class is so unique and loaded with star power at just about every tier on both offense and on defense.

JOSH MYERS  JOSH MYERS:

Josh Myers out of Miamisburg, OH stands at an astonishing 6-6 and 306 pounds and looks to be a key piece on the Offensive Line.  He was one of the first members of the lauded 2017 Class and he is solid on his commitment.  Myers will be trouble for opposing linemen when his time comes at Ohio State.  He shows the instincts that Offensive Tackles should have and the drive to finish plays until the whistle blows.  He displays the tenacity and a nasty streak to finish off rushers and he has the ability to pull left or right.  He will be quite the player once he figures it out, but until he proves himself to the coaches, he looks to add depth to bolster the Tackle ranks.

wyatt davis  WYATT DAVIS:

Wyatt Davis out of Bellflower, CA was a surprise commitment that the Buckeyes managed to secure even though they started recruiting him during the latter stages of the recruiting game.  Meyer secured his commitment after a month and he looks to be another firm Buckeye pledge.  Davis plays Offensive Guard and he stands at 6-5, 310 pounds and looks solid on film.  He showed people at the opening that he will be a solid contributor and eventual starter on the Buckeyes Offensive Line once he gets an opportunity.  He flashes quick, fluid hip movement and he flat out destroys defenders who dare to come his way.  He will be something special and the Buckeyes line looks to be building something special.

shaun wade  SHAUN WADE:

Shaun Wade committed to Ohio State during their CFB Playoff run to the top.  He plays Cornerback out of Jacksonille, FL and stands at 6-1, 177.  He has that Florida speed that Urban covets and the skillset to lock down opposing Wide Receivers consistently.  He has the instincts and the ability to lockdown one side of the field and could be used at any corner spot.  There has been a ton of negativity surrounding Wade and his potential to flip to another school.  We would never know and until it is actually made official (Insert Carlton Davis situation), he is a Buckeye commit until then.  He has the tools to surpass the upperclassmen above him with numerous injuries and inexperience.  He has a shot at starting if he stays and puts in the work.

chase young  CHASE YOUNG:

Chase Young committed at the well-known Friday Night Lights Camp, that the Buckeye staff puts out annually to attract top tier talent to get them to compete and learn the Buckeye way.  It worked with Young, who many thought had been leaning toward the hometown Terrapin team.  Luckily for Coach Johnson and Coach Meyer, they secured his commitment and stole him away like Dwayne Haskins and Keandre Jones from last years class.  Young is projected to become a Weakside Defensive End and he is 6-5, 225.  He has the speed, the techniques and the drive to succeed at a higher level and that is why he was a top priority for the Buckeye staff.  Another fine piece to pair alongside other commits along the Defensive Line.

Five Star Friday: Buckeyes Land A Huge Slob

Things have gotten out of hand for the 2017 recruiting class. It is almost as if Ohio State Fans are living in a dream world. Top recruit after top recruit are throwing themselves at Urban Meyer and his staff in a rush to save themselves one of the very few coveted 2017 spots. The 2017 class is reaching epic proportions and the avalance continued with today’s announcement of the newest member of the 2017 class.

Screen-Shot-2016-03-03-at-11.22.47-AM

Wyatt Davis a 6’5″ 310 pound Five Star Offensive Guard from Bellflower, California committed to Ohio State in a ceremony at his high school today. Wyatt visited OSU last weekend and was blown away by the school and staff so much so that he committed to OSU even though nearly every “expert” had him pegged to go to Alabama before he visited OSU.

How this helps Ohio State?

Well landing a top 15 recruit in the country is a gift in and of itself but it also helps to keep the ball rolling with many of the top recruits in the country. This is a cornerstone recruit along with fellow five star OL Josh Myers and top 100 OL Jake Morretti OSU has the top OL class in the country. It also helps with other five star recruits from California like Darnay Holmes and Tyjon Lindsey. It also helps keep OSU well ahead of the rest of the country and most importantly Michigan.

Ten Years of Buckeye Blogging

motsagProfileIt’s still doesn’t seem possible, but today marks ten years (TEN FREAKING YEARS) since I posted the first post here at Men of the Scarlet and Gray dot com. Join with me for a little navel gazing as I reminiscence on the wild ride that started when myself (el Kaiser), Jeremiah (SYR), Grant (sportsMonkey) and Trevor (Zeke) started this here Ohio State blog. (Don’t ask us why we went with nicknames. We were young and dumb)

In the lifetime of the site, we’ve seen a Heisman Trophy Winner (should have been at least 1 more), 3 trips to the National Championship game, a Final Four and an NCAA Finals (including that amazing comeback in the Sweet 16), a major scandal, and the most amazing run of a football team in 2014.

We’ve gone through not one, not two, not three but FOUR Michigan coaches.

We’ve humiliated and/or killed off Kirk Herbstreit in a number of ways (here, here, here, here, and here). We introduced the world to Tressnac The Magnificent and his trusty side-kick Lllloyd Carr.

We spawned at least one other blog, with the birth of blog The Buckeye Battle Cry, happening here in these comments. As far as we know we haven’t fathered any other blogs, but that doesn’t mean they’re not out there.

As fans, we’ve witnessed all sorts of ups and downs. We’ve witnessed some heartbreaking moments. We had Jeremiah breaking the Carlos Hyde story. We’ve had interviews with former and future Buckeyes, (we even had Cris Carter agree to be interviewed by Shannon but that fell through.)

While having fun at our opponents expense, we coined the phrase “Stiff Arm of Justice” (this one was a personal fave, as is this video)

Oh, and if you’ve been around since the beginning, you know that we single-handledly put Vernon Gholston (and his glorious biceps) on the map.

Look at them. LOOK!
Vernon Gholston

He even followed @MotSaG on twitter!

As you may have noticed, my regular posting around these parts has been next to zilch the past year plus. It kills me that Real Life© has gotten in the way, but I’d like to thank all of our writers contributors, past and present, for all the hard work they’ve put in to keep the site going and bringing you guys the top-notch Buckeye writing we hope you’ve come to expect. We are going to be losing a couple of our staff to our brothers at tBBC but this site will still be chugging along. I would be remiss if I didn’t profusely thank my co-founder and Best Friend Jeremiah. The work he has put in the past few years dragging the site into the limelight has been nothing short of amazing. He’s the hardest working blogger out there and his Twitter Troll Game is strong. Thanks for everything you do, big fella.

It’s been a wild ride and it’s been a great time spending it with all of you. We have some changes that are going on behind the scenes and we’ll be making an announcement soon about some exciting changes, but we hope you’ll stick around with us for another 10 years of Buckeye (and Ohio) greatness!

Many Thanks To Men of the Scarlet and Gray For The Opportunity

This article will mark my last as a contributing editor for Men of the Scarlet and Gray. I have enjoyed my opportunities here immensely, and I profusely thank each and every one of you who have been kind to read, review, and interact with me along the way. It has truly been a pleasure writing for all of you, and I hope that you will keep in touch with me through Twitter.

Rest assured – this is not the end of my writing career. Think of this as more of a temporary pause. In the meantime, look for articles from me via my blog From The Mind Of Minnich, or my occasional articles that have been appearing on Athlon Sports.

Thank you, and as always, #GoBucks,

Nebraska At Night In November Needs No Hype

“ Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something…” ~ Thomas Edison

Leave it to Thomas Edison, an Ohioan and considered “The Father Of Invention”, to appropriately summarize the goals for the 2016 Ohio State football team. No rules – just accomplish something.

“Something” is a pretty vague and open concept. Considering how much talent Ohio State lost to graduation and the NFL Draft, considering how I have written throughout spring practice about how 44 players on Ohio State’s roster are either redshirt freshmen or true freshmen…Damn right, Mr. Edison. There are no rules. Ohio State fans are just looking to see what this team can accomplish against a much tougher schedule in 2016 than 2015, with tremendously talented, yet inexperienced, players.

**

Nebraska Cornhuskers (Game 9)

2016 OSU Opponent Ranking: 7 out of 12

Players Recruited By Ohio State: N/A, surprisingly. Ohio State did recruit DL Greg McMullen years ago, but McMullen announced his intention to quit football earlier this spring.

Game Date: November 5, 2016

Kickoff Time: 8pm EST, telecast TBD on ABC, ESPN, or ESPN2

Location: Ohio Stadium

Rationale For The Ranking: Nebraska was truly snakebitten during 2015. Coming off a 5-7 season under Mike Riley, the Cornhuskers can only go up, right? Right?

Here’s a better reason why I think Ohio State will be in good shape for this game ~ Nebraska will be coming off another road game, at Wisconsin. Ohio State has a challenging game of their own the week before against Northwestern, but at home. Oh, by the way…This is a night game in Ohio Stadium. Do you think Urban Meyer may be wanting to send a message as November begins? I was in attendance in Ohio Stadium in 2012 the last time Nebraska visited; I have no doubt the crowd will be revved up for this one also.

Prediction: Ohio State will be coming off a home game against Northwestern, while who knows what kind of condition Nebraska will be in after a road game at Wisconsin. Look for many of Ohio State’s top recruits to be in attendance, as Coach Meyer always salivates at the opportunity to showcase Ohio State football in night games. This could be a preview of The B1G Championship Game in December, depending on how Nebraska responds after such a trying 2015 season.

Buckeyes Will Need To Keep Their Minds On Maryland In November

Maryland Terrapins (Game 10)

2016 OSU Opponent Ranking: 8 out of 12

Players Recruited By Ohio State: Players Recruited By Ohio State: OL Derwin Gray, OL Damian Prince, WR Taivon Jacobs, RB Wes Brown, DL Adam McLean. Jacobs actually gave a verbal commitment to Ohio State back in 2013, but decided to sign with Maryland to be closer to his young daughter.

Game Date: November 12, 2016

Kickoff Time: TBA

Location: Byrd Stadium (College Park, Maryland)

Rationale For The Ranking: Maryland gave Ohio State a tougher than expected game in 2015, eventually losing 49-28 in Ohio Stadium. Ohio State had no problems with Maryland in Byrd Stadium, defeating Maryland 52-24. Why is Maryland ranked higher than other Ohio State opponents?

As in most things in life, timing is key. Ohio State will be coming off a night game against Nebraska on November 5th, and a revenge game is on the horizon at Michigan State on November 19th. Will Ohio State be tempted to be looking ahead?

Prediction: Former Urban Meyer protege D.J. Durkin is at the helm for Maryland now, and look for the Terrapins to become a more physical team that will be able to compete against the other traditional powers in The B1G East. Ohio State should be able to control this game, provided the Buckeyes do not take the Terrapins too lightly or look ahead to the trip to East Lansing.

Ohio State’s Games Against Hoosiers Are Often “Who Knows?”

**

Indiana Hoosiers (Game 5)

2016 OSU Opponent Ranking: 9 out of 12

Players Recruited By Ohio State: OL Tim Gardner, DB Tyler Green, and DB Jayme Thompson. Gardner was signed as part of Ohio State’s 2013 recruiting class, but left the program after a disciplinary incident in the summer of 2013. Gardner played in eleven games for Indiana in 2015. Tyler Green could technically be considered recruited by Ohio State, yet did not sign with Ohio State in 2015. Green played in eight games as a true freshman for Indiana in 2015. Jayme Thompson was also part of Ohio State’s 2013 recruiting class, like Tim Gardner. Thompson redshirted in 2013, transferred after the 2013 season to Iowa Western C.C. for 2014 and 2015, and signed with Indiana for the 2016 season.

Game Date: October 8, 2016

Kickoff Time: TBA

Location: Ohio Stadium

Rationale For The Ranking: Truth be told, I struggled with where to place Indiana on this opponent ranking. Think about how the games against Indiana have gone since Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer took over the program in 2012 – A nailbiter that went down to the wire in Bloomington in 2012, 52-49. Ohio State rolled Indiana in Ohio Stadium in 2013, 42-14. Ohio State has to rally behind Jalin Marshall’s performance in 2014, 42-27. Ohio State survives Indiana last year in Bloomington, 34-27. Why not rank Indiana higher?

Here is why – Nate Sudfeld and Jordan Howard have both departed Indiana for the NFL. While Indiana returns quarterback Zander Diamont, who tormented the Buckeyes last season, I believe Ohio State will have too much on both sides of the ball for Indiana to be able to keep pace as they have in recent seasons.

Prediction: Ohio State will be coming off a home game versus Rutgers, and will be tempted to be looking ahead to two tough road trips on the horizon with Wisconsin and Penn State. Even with the road trips looming, Coach Meyer and his staff will be able to remind his players about Ohio State has had extremely tough, close calls against the Hoosiers, and I believe Ohio State will come out with a more focused approach more like the 2013 game than the 2014 or 2015 contests.
