Vote for the Silver Bullets

MotSaG’er Brad alerted us to a poll going on over at The ESPN’s Sports Nation, searching for College Football’s coolest helmet. Of course, we can’t let our Buckeyes go down in the first round, so head on over and vote for the Silver Dome adorned with those beautiful buckeye leaves.

Weak Sauce (UPDATED)

BlogLast week, Molly @ Buckeye Commentary published an article discussing OSU’s NFL draft history.

It was a well-researched piece, about 1300 words or so, and one that clearly took quite a bit of time and effort. She even included three paragraphs on LeCharles Bentley, for crying out loud.

So I was confused when my feed reader showed me the same article again, only this time, from Buckeye Legends, and under another byline (Katie Bernal).

When I double-checked later, the BL version had added a final paragraph:

“Portions of this article compliments of Bleacher Report.”

If by portions, they mean ‘the entire article word-for-word.’ It’s an unwritten rule of the blogosphere to credit the source, and if copying a section verbatim, to use blockquote elements (like I did in the preceding paragraph). Otherwise, it’s good form to at least use quotes and a reference link. However, you won’t find many bloggers copying and pasting someone’s entire post into their own – that’s what we call weak sauce.

I gave Molly the heads-up, and judging from her comment over at BL, it does seem that their re-publishing was not authorized.

BL is a good blog. They have great writers with good stories and inside perspective. Hopefully they’ll do the right thing and give Molly credit for the piece.

UPDATE:

Buckeye Legends has pulled the post, without explanation. It’s not on Google Cache, and I didn’t manage to grab the HTML or make a PDF of the page. But the fact they pulled the article is at least some concession – it’s a de facto admission of their role in what happened.

Who is YNBA? Why am I here? Stop yelling at me!!

Blog

So…You may have noticed a new moniker posting on MotSaG.

YNBA…

Who is this guy?

If the smell of warm Hefeweizen and stale GORP has an air of familiarity, don’t be scared. You are in the presence of a manufacturer of bookish mediocrity…

YNBA (“You’ll Never Buckeye Alone”) or the artist formerly known as “Herringbone” from Death Cab for Woody has made the move to MotSaG. If you are fretting for new material at DCfW (I mean…seriously…who isn’t?), continue to fret good people, because the site has “gone the way of the dodo” and ceases to be. Don’t expect new material…evah.

Why is he here?

The fine gentleman at MotSaG were gracious enough to extend an offer to an aging veteran in the twilight of his short blogging career in hopes of kindling a literary rapture. Much love to the sportsMonkey and el Kaiser.

What will he do?

Well…after this post, he will no longer write about himself in the third person, but he digresses…

For those of you familiar with my style of writing (some people have and will continue to call it drivel), it contains copious amounts of sarcasm with a dash of angst towards anyone that is considered as a “fanatic” In my world, a fanatic is a person who simply refuses to let things like facts or evidence get in the way of a belief (I’m looking at you SHESH-SHEE-SHEE fan…and Carson Palmer). The correct mixture of this angst and sarcasm will sometimes result in a finely prepared quiche of unadulterated sports lovin’ ready to satisfy the palate of the OSU sports fans that already frequent this site.

Seriously…I look forward to trying to keep up with the current level of awesomeness that already exists at MotSaG and, again, thank sportsMonkey and el Kaiser for the opportunity.

Greg Oden is kind of a big deal

I think the thing that endears Greg Oden to most people is his unashamed self-deprecation. I know he was only a Buckeye for one year, but his impact will be felt for years to come. Check it:

Oden? More like OLDen.

Tressel’s Wisdom

Or, how to be Tresselized: “The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life

Available Tuesday, it includes about 200 quotes Tressel has gathered since his first season at Youngstown State in 1986. The real enlightenment for Buckeye fans comes from the peek into Tressel’s psyche. From his love and respect for his father, to the explanation – complete with a top-10 list – of why he doesn’t like his players to swear, this is the blueprint for Tresselization.

From the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

We’re up, we’re up…

el Kaiser and I have been like a couple of hibernating bears this summer, arising only long enough to hit the snooze button with an occasional Ohio-sports related article.

But as the summer wears on, the hot southern winds are carrying a familiar scent… which creates a craving, and initiates a hunger.

College football.

The days are warm, the tomatoes are ripe and full of hot juice, and the Milky-Way stretches over the already waist-high corn at night.

And college football nears.

The same thing seems to happen each summer, in that dead space after the NBA Finals and the annual non-playoff-appearance by the Jackets. We write ourselves into a deep slumber. Occasionally we get jazzed up about Ohio’s summertime teams long enough to string together a few paragraphs. I tried writing about the Crew once, but ended up talking about bratwurst.

But as college football nears… we feel like rising, rubbing the sleep out of our eyes, and charging up our laptops. After all, the name of the site is Men of the Scarlet and Gray.

So, “we’re up, we’re up.” We’re up, and awake. Expect a surge in content here soon.

And in case we don’t say it enough, thanks for stopping by, and thanks especially to those who participate in the comments sections.

Happy Birthday MotSaG

This post should have went up Sunday, but like everything around here, it’s going up late. Better late than never, right?

Sunday marked two full years of Ohio State Blogging here at Men of the Scarlet and Gray. It’s crazy to think that since then, we’ve watched our Buckeyes compete for two football championships, one basketball championship and countless other milestones. We’ve witnessed mountains of men and watched them reach the highest peaks of the sport and the lowest of the lows. We had our guts wrenched, our breath taken away and our hearts thrilled.

And the best part of it all is that we’ve met some pretty cool people and pissed some people off. Since we missed our first birthday, allow us a bit of navel gazing as we look back on a few of our favorite MotSaG moments.

Our first “big hit” was the sportsMonkey’s Game Day Preview before the 2006 season started. We had mucho LOLs working on that one.

The 2006 season went rather well, culminating in an Armageddon-like OSU/Michigan bedlam for #1. What a rush that was.

The days leading up to the 2006 Michigan game were great. We stumbled across a 911 transcript of Ypsilanti dispatchers responding to a call concerning one Adrian Arrington. There was a visit from our own Tressnac to liven things up. And, of course, we all know how that game ended (best OSU/UM game ever?) and the instant backlash from certain bloggers and how they were treated down here in Columbus. I had enough of that noise and spoke my peace. That felt good. Of course, we couldn’t let any opportunity to needle our foes up north, and sportsMonkey did it was pizazz.

Yeah, so the BCS title game didn’t go how we planned. It sure started out how we planned, but went downhill from there.

After football season, the hits kept coming with the Thad 5. What a ride that was. The Xavier and Tennessee games were easily some of the greatest Buckeye basketball games I have ever witnessed. Holy smokes, that was a crazy ride.

After March Madness ended, things got slow around these parts but we began crushing on someone near and dear to our hearts, and Mount Vernon became our patron saint around these parts.

Again, the Game Day crew was lampooned to much hilarity again, in preparation for a new season of college football. We couldn’t wait.

The 2007 season rolled around and started out in a most humorous fashion. What a weird day that was. We eventually came to our senses and made sense of the whole mess.

The season didn’t start bad just for the Wolverines. We couldn’t help noticing Notre Dame was having a rough go at it, too.

In fact, the entire Big Ten had a rough time last year. Right in the middle of it all we were all witnesses to some ugliness at Penn State. In a year where we needed all the good karma we could get, this did not help things.

Things looked rather gloomy in Buckeye Nation on the fateful day in November. But that’s nothing a royal pounding of Henne & Hart couldn’t cure.

And so was born the legend of Mount Vernon. I don’t think we’ll ever see the likes of him again.

So once again, we found our Buckeyes poised for redemption against another Southern foe. People sure didn’t like them apples. We don’t need to recap what happened there. Everyone knows.

But it gave us a chance to really see who were fans and who were simply eating whatever was being feed at the hands of the backwards logic of the ESPN. It’s as it’s always been: Buckeye Nation versus the world.

Finally, we watched closely as the Buckeyes won the Pryor Lottery, complete with all the creepiness associated with recruiting. We were appalled by the spectacle of it all.

And now, here we are. That was a fun little look back at the goings-on around these parts. We’d also like to highlight a few items we think deserve a second look:

One of the posts we were rather proud of but didn’t get much traffic was a post sportsMonkey did looking back at some Sweatervest Memories. We highly recommend it.

Our favorite comment goes to Buckeye in Texas after the Michigan game. Thank you for that great, great piece of hilarity.

Our SMRTest commenter award goes to Steve, who read our “Colts embarass themselves post” and completely and utterly missed the point. Much to the delight of us MotSaG’ers.

So thanks for letting us indulge a little in selfish promotion. We’ve had a great ride these past two years, and hope to continue bringing the snark and wit to the Buckeye Blogosphere!

So long, farewell…

Auf wiedersehen, good night.

Yost is packing up things and closing up shop at the MZone. As a Buckeye fan, we shed no tears at the loss of a Michigan blog, but as a member of the college football blogosphere as a whole, we wish Yost (and the rest of his crew) best wishes and good luck in their future endeavors.

NCAA 09 Covers

First of all, did you know Wal-Mart had a Blog? Not just a blog, but a rather large, multi-authored blog? I sure didn’t.

Anyway, I’ve railed for a long time that EA should offer regional covers for their sports games, but more specifically, for the NCAA 0X series. I don’t mind buying a college football game with Reggie Bush or Jared Zabransky on the cover, but as a Buckeye fan, I’d be much more inclined to get one with Troy Smith or Vernon Gholston on my cover.

Well, this year for NCAA 09, you can do just that. You can “customize” your NCAA cover to fit your fandom. But, it’s exclusively available at Sam’s Club:

Sam’s Club will be the ONLY retailer to offer OFFICIAL EA alternative cover images. What does this mean to you? Well, if you are like me and NOT a Razorback fan (almost illegal here in Arkansas, I still will not to that “wooooo pig” thing), you can put an image from a selection of images on YOUR box front at no additional charge.

It’s a very cool idea, but it looks like it’s being executed poorly. First of all, the example posted at the Check Out blog, with the Lucky Charm Leprechaun, looks like a character model from the game. If they use mascots from the game engine as the cover pictures, that is pretty lame. If they’re not using actual photographs, this is a bad idea. And I know there are licensing agreements and NFL player associations to deal with, but it would be really cool if they worked it out to have a few fan favorites from each team available for covers. That would make it an instant buy.

And for those wondering, here’s my dream cover:

NCAA 09 Cover

(And by “dream cover,” I mean that literally. I dream about buying NCAA 09 with Mount Vernon on the cover. Nightly)

Technical Issues

Things seem to be borked around these parts at the moment. I’m not sure what is up, but we’ll try to work things as soon as we can.

Update: Things seem to have fixed themselves. Let us know if you’re having any kind of problems.
