Surveillance Video Posted, Appears to be Much Ado About Nothing

610WTVN has posted the surveillance video of the “altercation” between Carlos Hyde and his accuser that fateful night a couple weeks ago.

Carlos Hyde enters the picture around the 2:25 mark and the “spat” happens at 3:17.

Carlos Hyde is not being charged with anything. Urban Meyer will handle this as he deems appropriate (which the Nation of Mouthbreathers will deem insufficient 30 seconds after) and we can move on to being five days away from camp opening for the 2013 Ohio State Buckeyes.

Best of the B1G, #20-16

b1g_iconWe are counting down who we feel are the best players of the B1G. We are now in the second week, looking at #20 to #16. We started with a Iowa running back, Mark Weisman.

#20 Mark Weisman

In his 2012 season he rushed for 815 yards. Mark showed throughout the 2012 season that he can go off anytime in any game and rush for a large amount of yards. He is going to be the key for Iowa’s success on offense.

#19 Jeremy Gallon

He should be able to help the Michigan offense a great deal. Him and Garnder will have good chemistry this season. Without Denard, Michigan needs someone to produce key plays. As a return specialist and a wide receiver Jeremy can do that.

#18 Zach Zwinak

Zach is going to be a huge factor for Penn State’s offense. With a competition for a starting quarterback, it is nice for the Penn State offense to have a steady running back. In his 2012 season, he ran for 1000 yards off of 203 attempts. Considering the fact that Zach only ran for 7 yards last year, Zach had a breakout year this past season. He is going to be the leader and the biggest contributor for the Penn State Offense.

#17 Jack Mewhort

Mewhort is a leader for this team. In fact, Mewhort is named a captain for the upcoming season. The offensive line is going to revolve around Jack Mewhort who will be the starting left tackle.

#16 Ricardo Allen

Despite his height, he enjoys the challenge on playing against the opponents’ best receiver. In total, he has 164 tackles, 118 solo tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 6 interceptions, and 14 passes deflected. With those stats rising he is a top CB prospect for the NFL next year. He will be the leader of the Purdue defense.

Jeremiah was on The Wakeup Call with Patrick Schmidt in Chicago last week to discuss Hyde, Roby and the Buckeyes.

Shannon also shared a personal story on his fight against testicular cancer. This has nothing to do with OSU sports, but is a reminder that there are things much more important that what a bunch of meatheads do on a football field on any given Saturday.

Recruiting

Dylan chatted with class of 2014 commit Parris Campbell who said that even though he’s fully committed to Ohio State and has shut down his recruitment, other teams “like TTUN, Alabama, and a lot of other schools” haven’t given up. Dylan also caught up with Terrence Alexander, a 3-star cornerback out of Louisiana. And finally, the tireless Dylan talked with Class of 2014 RB Corey Avery.

Jeremiah spoke at length with Class of 2016 center Alex Gourley. He seems like a smart kid who definitely value academics:

Academics have a large influence on my choice of schools. Stanford, Notre Dame, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and OSU all have great economic/business programs, which is the field of study I wish to pursue.

Jeremiah also spoke with Shaun Crawford, Class of 2015 WR/CB and a heavy Michigan lean. Can the Buckeyes convince this lifelong Wolverine fan to stay in state?

In case you missed it, Dylan also had an extensive an excellently researched Friday Light Nights preview. We hope to follow up with some of the Buckeye hopefuls with their experiences at the event.

Andrew spoke with Demetrius Knox, the #1 rated Guard of the Class of 2014. Many see the recently-decommitted (from Texas) Knox as an essential building block for the Buckeye offensive line. He’s acutely aware of his standing with the OSU coaches:

I talked to almost all of them. They told me that they have seen all of my film and I am their number one 2014 OL target.

Football

Oof, this was not a good week to be a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes Football team. We had to report some extremely distressing news, including allegations against Carlos Hyde and the arrest of Bradley Roby.

Rumors were swirling all around Columbus as stories came out that ultimately proved to be false (including the aforementioned Dispatch story that claimed Hyde had been booted off the team). Ohio State eventually released a press release that clarified certain aspects of what was happening with this team. Hyde was suspended indefinitely, Marcus Baugh has had to sit out team activities and will miss the first game against Buffalo and Tim Gardner was sent home after he was charged by Columbus Police with obstruction of official business. Roby was not permitted to attend Big Ten Media days (replaced by Christian Bryant) and could face additional discipline.

Speaking of Big Ten Media Days, we fans braced as we knew Meyer would be bombarded with questions concerning the team and everything that had transpired the weekend before. While he certainly addressed those questions, we here at MotSaG feel that Coach Meyer handled those questions with aplomb. He gets a bad rap from the media nationally, but locally we see that he really does care about his players and considers them family.

Coming up

Another week of recruitment, the top 15-10 B1G players and much more.

MotSaG on the Radio

Earlier today (unfortunately while most people were watching Urban Meyer at the B1G Media Days), our very own Jeremiah (SYR) went on The Wake Up Call with Patrick Schmidt (@PatrickASchmidt) on Sportstown Chicago. He went on to talk about the Hyde Situation and also talked Urban Meyer, Braxton Miller and predictions and expectations for the Buckeyes for the 2013 season.

This was Jeremiah’s first radio appearance and we think he handled himself well and represented Men of the Scarlet and Gray (and Buckeyes fans in general) admirably. You can have a listen here:

Urban Meyer at B1G Media Day

OSU FootballWe don’t have a guy on the ground at the B1G Media Day, but we do have BTN2Go and we were able to listen in to Urban Meyer’s turn at the mic. A few thoughts.

First and foremost, it’s clear that Urban was going to get a lot of questions about the current status of Carlos Hyde (including responding to Braxton Miller’s claim of “we have good news”). He handled those questions deftly, defelcting any real answer to the “we’ll wait until we see all the facts” response.

He did mention he was “furious” when he received the call about the various issues that cropped up with players (Hyde, Roby, Baugh and Gardner) and mentioned a certain amount of lament that two of them were freshmen and that his staff wasn’t able to “educate them” on certain things. His concern for players really came through, referring to them as “family” and that “you have high expectations for your own children. To walk away from a player, it’s always very difficult to do (knowing their circumstances).”

That being said, he was quick to mention that there will be no leniency. He said that, “disruption is what bothers me. The head coach needs to set the standard, direct, guide, mentor, push and direct these guys but every young person is responsible.” He said that he has people looking to see what other programs do in their cases of discipline and that he “wants to make sure our punishment is hard or harder than any other discipline out there. I want to make sure we are setting the tone.” He feels for the other players who might end up suffering because of the mistakes of “a couple of knuckleheads.”

With respect to actual on-the field matters, he mentioned that Curtis Grant has had an excellent spring and is developing into a leader. He alluded to how Ryan Shazier was “average” at the beginning of last season but developed into a great playmaker. (I wonder if he is comparing the progression of the two. That would be good things if he is.)

When asked who would be the leaders on this team after losing vocal leaders like John Simon from last year’s team, he said that he is, “counting on our quarterback (who) has to become that leader. Our offensive line without question is the heart and soul of our team. They’re strong leaders.” He also said that on defense, he looks to his two safeties, Christian Bryant and CJ Barnett, to step into that leadership role.

It was clear Urban Meyer knows how to handle the media. The difference between his thoughtful, personal answers are in stark contrast to Jim Tressel’s coach/senator-speak. I think considering everything that has led up to this moment in front of the media, Urban Meyer handled things very well and was very much a great representative of Ohio State and its football team.

Thoughts?

The Best of the B1G, #20 Mark Weisman

b1g_iconMark is going into his Junior season at Iowa playing at the fullback position. He ranked 9th in the BIG Ten in rushing yards per game. In his 2012 season he rushed for 815 yards. Mark showed throughout the 2012 season that he can go off anytime in any game and rush for a large amount of yards. He is going to be the key for Iowa’s success on offense.

mark_weisman

Mark emerged in the 2012 season. Many Iowa fans did not know Mark would make such a huge contribution to the Iowa offense. His first start at tail back was against Central Michigan when he ran for over 200 yards. This opened many eyes.

Here is a nice piece on Mark:

It will be interesting to see how Mark does in the upcoming season for the Hawkeyes. He will be an offense threat to every team the Hawkeyes play.

Best of the B1G, #25-21

b1g_iconWe are counting down who we feel are the best players of the B1G. This first week we started at the bottom of the top twenty-five and worked our way up to twenty-one. We started with a Buckeye, offensive guard Andrew Norwell.

#25 Andrew Norwell

Norwell is as steady as she goes and pretty much the definition of consistency on an offensive line loaded with talent and experience. Norwell anchored a Buckeye running game that finished an impressive 10th in the nation last year. Norwell has 25 starts in his career, 20 of which came at left guard. He’s played more snaps last year than any other Buckeye, playing 862 snaps. Norwell played 98.8% of the offensive snaps last year as well and that lead the team.

#24 Chris Borland

there is no better-run stopper at linebacker in the Big Ten due to the fact he always fills the right hole and he is strong enough to disengage blocks from quite a few offensive lineman. He has a knack for punching the ball loose, in his career at Wisconsin he has forced a total of 13 fumbles, which is one shy of setting both a Big Ten and FBS record of 14 forced fumbles. Borland is on the Bednark watch list for the second straight season. He also finished with the honors of first team all Big Ten in 2012.

#23 Max Bullough

This year, it’s up to last year’s leader in tackles, Max Bullough, to take the reigns of the defense and lead it through a favorable conference schedule that dodges Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin while facing the rival Wolverines at home.

#22 Darqueze Dennard

As a junior, he played all 13 games and was selected as an All-Big Ten player, recording 52 tackles and 3 interceptions. What he brings to the team is a great blend of skills; he can play zone and man coverage, can break fast from the line of scrimmage, has impressive catch-up speed, and as an added feature, he can tackle.

#21 Shane Wynn

Shane Wynn is the smallest player in the B1G at 5’7″ and 163 lbs. But the tiny WR from Cleveland Glenville High School puts up giant numbers for the Indiana Hoosiers. He is a prime example of a guy who wasn’t recruited by larger more more successful CFB programs and had to fight his way onto a B1G team.

We added another writer to the site, Ronnie. Ronnie will be bring us an insightful look at some of the schemes and technical aspects that the OSU football team will be employing this year.

Wrestling

We had another great Ohio State wrestler profile from Garth, this time of JD Bergman:

JD Bergman is a complex and talented man embarked on the mission of his life, which is to say his entire life. He is just the kind of person you think of when you hear the Abraham Lincoln quote which is something like: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

Recruiting

Jeremiah took a look at the shape next year’s recruiting class is taking in his “Numbers Crunch” post.

We also had interviews with Class of 2014 Shawn Boone, Class of 2015 Drew Richmond, CJ Sanders and Class of 2017 Danny Clark.

Football

We started this week (actually ended last week) with the news that Marcus Baugh was arrested for underage drinking. Boys will be boys, and Marcus is still a young’un. But, since he plays football for Urban Meyer, boys will also run sprints. And Marcus will be running a lot.

For some reason, Brady Hoke and Will Muschamp were throwing shade at Ohio. Frank Solich has no idea why.

Ronnie looked at five Buckeyes that will need to step up their game if Ohio State has a chance to make a run at the BCS Title, including Linebacker Curtis Grant:

However if this defense wants to become elite, Grant must become a more efficient and smarter football player.

Finally, a plethora of Buckeyes were named to watchlists for the various year-end awards. You can find a round up of all of them here.

Basketball

Not much on the basketball front here in July, but Shannon wrote a nice tribute to Buckeye favorite Chris Jent as he prepares to take on his next coaching challenge.

Coming up

We’ve got another full week of content coming up, including an extensive preview of the exciting Friday Night Lights event coming up this week. We’ll also continue our look at the best of the B1G, picking up at #20 on Monday. Will there be any more Buckeyes in the second tier of players? Stay tuned.

OSU FootballThe Watchlists continue unabated:

Doak Walker Award (Top College Running Back)
Carlos Hyde, RB

You have to go all the way back to 1995 for the last time an Ohio State Buckeye won the Doak Walker Award. And of course, I don’t have to remind that was 1995 Heisman Trophy Winner, Eddie George.

No one is going to mistake The Big Handsome for Eddie, but Carlos Hyde is certainly a man on a mission (A thousand yard mission) and a Doak Walker Award wouldn’t be a surprise if he completes that mission and becomes Urban Meyer’s first thousand yard rusher.
