The Best of the B1G: #15 Kenny Bell

b1g_icon#80 Kenny Bell
School: Nebraska
Position: Wide Receiver
Class: Junior
Hometown: Boulder, Colorado
Height: 6-1
Weight: 185 lbs.

Why He’s Important to Nebraska’s Success: Kenny Bell is one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the Big 10 and can give a defense fits. Combined with quarterback Taylor Martinez and running back Ameer Abdullah, this trio makes up one of the most potent offenses in the Big 10. Since he’s surrounded by two other offensive threats, Bell becomes an even more dangerous player.

Bell has been the leading receiver for the Cornhuskers the last two seasons, leading the team in receiving yards, receptions and touchdown catches. In 2011, Bell caught 32 passes for 461 yards and three touchdown passes. He also ran the ball three times for 100 yards and one touchdown. Last season, Bell had a breakout year and established himself as one of the best receivers in the Big 10. Bell had 50 receptions with 863 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. Bell was fifth in the Big 10 in receiving yards per game.

Career Highlight

Also one more thing about Bell: He’s a damn good blocker! In fact, the NCAA recently announced they’re cracking down more on hitting defenseless players above the shoulders this season, largely because of hits like Bell made on a Wisconsin player in the Big 10 Championship last season. Nebraska fans refer to it as the “Kenny Bell Rule.”

Take a look at this spectacular hit below (the great Gus Johnson with the call). I care about the player’s safety, but how could you not love this block?

How Bell Stacks Up Against His Competition

As I mentioned, Bell is one of the best receivers in the Big 10. Phil Steele named him to his 2013 Preseason All-Big 10 1st team. In 2012, he was named 1st team All-Big Ten by the Big Ten Network, Phil Steele, ESPN and CBS. Big 10 coaches and media named him second-team All-Big Ten in 2012.

Bell’s two best games in 2012 were against Minnesota and the Buckeyes. Against the Golden Gophers, Bell had nine catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns (expected when going against the Minnesota defense). I obviously saw him play against the Buckeye defense last fall and I was impressed by his play. He caught the ball five times for 133 yards. Credit the Buckeye defense for harassing Martinez enough to prevent him from hooking up with his star receiver for a touchdown (3 interceptions).

Why Bell is Ranked No. 15?

I consider Bell to be the third best wide receiver in the Big 10, trailing only Penn State’s Allen Robinson and Wisconsin’s Jared Abbredaris. The reason I consider him only the third best is because he seemed inconsistent at times last season, especially in the latter half of the season. After his great performance against the Buckeyes, he had two solid games against Northwestern and the school up north. Then he combined for only 62 receiving yards against Michigan State and Penn State. After he destroyed Minnesota’s defense, Bell sat out with an injury against Iowa and only managed 14 receiving yards against Wisconsin. Bell needs to prove he can be consistent throughout the grind of the Big 10 season and against good defenses. Bell seems to have no problem doing well against inferior defenses, but needs to do well against worthy opponents to be considered the best in the Big 10. He also needs to show that last season wasn’t a fluke and that it really was his coming out party. Bell is only a junior this season, so there is definitely room for improvement. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Bell stepped his game up even more this season and established himself as the best receiver in the Big 10.

MotSaG Chat with Teryn Savage

At the age of 15 This young stud is already receiving interest from some of the best programs including numerous SEC schools and THE Ohio State University. This past week I got to know a great young man and ask him a few questions about his recruitment and life outside of football. This young man is Teryn Savage he attended Cary HS in North Carolina. Teryn is currently 6″1 and weights in at 175 lbs. He ran a 4.63 40 yard dash this past weekend however it was his first time ever running it. Teryn is only going to get bigger and stronger, which a scary thought due to how dominate he already is. Teryn is very mature for age and would be a great fit for the Buckeyes.

Q: When did Ohio State first make contact with you, and how did it feel?

Q: What about Ohio State makes you strongly consider them?

A: Urban Meyer of course & the program there is almost like a dynasty

A Look Ahead: Matta’s 2013 Basketball Signees

OSU LogoWith the 2013 NBA Draft in the rear view mirror and the NBA Summer League in full swing, it’s time to take a look at the next wave of potential NBA talent. The Ohio State Buckeyes are no stranger when it comes to players being selected in the NBA draft. After all, the Buckeyes have had at least one player drafted every year since 2007. Some have been successful (Mike Conley) and others (Greg Oden & Byron Mullens) have just been tall.

The streak may be in jeopardy this year. Most experts believe LaQuinton Ross has the best chance of any current Buckeye to get drafted. He showed great flashes late in the season, most notably in the Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Tournament. Others believe senior to be point guard Aaron Craft will be the next to walk across the NBA Draft stage. Only time will tell.

Regardless of how a player’s career unfolds, getting to the league is a special accomplishment. It’s certainly one that player and coach can celebrate together. Year after year, Coach Matta and his staff have had the pleasure to celebrate with at least one drafted Buckeye. It really speaks volumes for their recruiting ability as well as honing and developing the talent that is brought in.

Enter 2012 signees Marc Loving of Toledo, OH (St. John’s Jesuit) and Kameron Williams of Towson, MD (Mount Saint Joseph). Loving is a silky smooth 6-7 small forward with range and Williams is a 6-2 shooting guard with range and the ability to slash. Both will be welcome additions to the Ohio State roster.

Neither player is a “one and done” type of recruit. With that being said, both are national top 100 recruits that have a chance to impact Buckeye basketball for the next several years. Lets take a more in depth look at both of them.

Marc Loving

This talented 6-7 swingman can do a little bit of everything. Loving’s decorated high school career was capped off when he won Ohio’s Mr. Basketball in 2012 (where he averaged 22 points and 9 rebounds a game). He has been in Ohio State’s 2012 class for what seems like an eternity. Loving also played for one of the Midwest’s most talented AAU programs in All-Ohio Red. The chance to showcase his talent on that type of stage made him a national name. See highlights here.

Loving brings great versatility with his game when he is on the floor. Essentially, he can be a two guard, small forward or power forward depending on the style of play during any particular game. Coach Matta will be able to create mismatches on the offensive end of the floor for the opposing team. Loving is known for his outside shooting at this point in his development. He still needs to develop a stronger lower and upper body for high level Division I basketball. Undoubtedly, that will come with time and a lot of hard work.

The outside shot of Loving’s also allows him to be an effective driver of the basketball. He can finish with either hand but will need to continue to develop this part of his offensive game. Loving is not known for his defense but will need to prove he can play great defense in order to play for Coach Matta at Ohio State. We’ve seen guys (LaQuinton Ross) with an explosive offensive repertoire not get off the pine because they can’t play defense. I see Loving contributing this season. How much, is still unknown. It all hinges on his ability to play on the defensive side of the floor and develop some strength.

Kam Williams

The 2nd commitment in the 2012 class was Baltimore, MD product, Kam Williams. The 6-2 Williams can flat out score. He will be an instant scoring threat off the bench this season for Coach Matta. Whether it is from behind the three point arc or off penetration, Williams will be a big time scorer in the Big Ten before his career is over.

Much like Loving, he will need to gain strength once he steps foot in a college weight room. His lack of size can be compensated for a quick first step and an uncanny ability to finish at the rim over taller players. 247 sports basketball recruiting expert Jerry Meyer has tweeted, “Ohio State commitment Kameron Williams is a scoring machine”. I hope Meyer (hey, we know that name) is right with his assessment. Check out some highlights here.

During the recruiting process, many experts thought Miami (FL) would land the services of Williams. However, once Williams stepped foot in Columbus all bets were off. It took him less than a week to commit to the program once he visited. “Ohio State is a big time basketball school,” Williams told Bucknuts.com. “It is a big time atmosphere. I love the people, I love the coaching staff and I love Coach Matta. It just seemed like a really good fit.” We couldn’t agree more Kam!

It remains to be seen how long Loving and Williams will be at Ohio State and how successful they will be. They’ve got tremendous upside and more importantly great attitudes and appreciation for the program they are entering. Coach Matta will make sure he puts them in the right position in order to be successful. The rest is up to Loving and Williams. If I was a betting man, I’d say both will have successful careers at Ohio State. They may even have a chance to walk across the NBA stage on draft day and look back at the rear view mirror, celebrating the place that helped them accomplish their dreams.

Demetrius Knox becomes commit #15

OSU FootballWell well well look what we have here. With Friday Night Lights happening this weekend you would expect to get a commitment from a player or 2 but to get one from a guy who wasn’t even there is big time. This newest recruit has quickly become a fan favorite and being a Buckeye since birth really made his connection to the fans special. It just so happens that he fills a spot of need big time as well.

images

Jeremy Birmingham broke the news on his twitter account moments ago…

Demetrius Knox just committed to Ohio State on his twitter account.

Demetrius Knox is a 6’4″ 290 lbs 4 star Offensive Lineman from Fort Worth, Texas. Knox brings to the OL a lot of speed and athleticism. He was once committed to Texas but decommitted months ago and right away he became a target for OSU and the fans. He has proven to be a guy who can be a leader and will help recruit for OSU. Rivals ranks him a 4 star and the no. 1 OG in the country. 247sports ranks him a 4 star and the no. 135 best recruit in the country. Scout ranks him a 4 star and the no 7 OG in the country. ESPN ranks him a 4 star and the no. 193rd best recruit in the country.

You can read an interview we had with Demetrius Knox from last week right here.

Below you can see his highlights…..

Best of the B1G, #20-16

b1g_iconWe are counting down who we feel are the best players of the B1G. We are now in the second week, looking at #20 to #16. We started with a Iowa running back, Mark Weisman.

#20 Mark Weisman

In his 2012 season he rushed for 815 yards. Mark showed throughout the 2012 season that he can go off anytime in any game and rush for a large amount of yards. He is going to be the key for Iowa’s success on offense.

#19 Jeremy Gallon

He should be able to help the Michigan offense a great deal. Him and Garnder will have good chemistry this season. Without Denard, Michigan needs someone to produce key plays. As a return specialist and a wide receiver Jeremy can do that.

#18 Zach Zwinak

Zach is going to be a huge factor for Penn State’s offense. With a competition for a starting quarterback, it is nice for the Penn State offense to have a steady running back. In his 2012 season, he ran for 1000 yards off of 203 attempts. Considering the fact that Zach only ran for 7 yards last year, Zach had a breakout year this past season. He is going to be the leader and the biggest contributor for the Penn State Offense.

#17 Jack Mewhort

Mewhort is a leader for this team. In fact, Mewhort is named a captain for the upcoming season. The offensive line is going to revolve around Jack Mewhort who will be the starting left tackle.

#16 Ricardo Allen

Despite his height, he enjoys the challenge on playing against the opponents’ best receiver. In total, he has 164 tackles, 118 solo tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 6 interceptions, and 14 passes deflected. With those stats rising he is a top CB prospect for the NFL next year. He will be the leader of the Purdue defense.

MotSaG Reader’s Digest for July 28, 2013

b1g_iconThe MotSaG Reader’s Digest is just that — a quick glance at the past week of content here at Men of the Scarlet and Gray. This will give you a chance to catch up on anything you may have missed during the course of the week. This isn’t everything we posted this week, so we always encourage everyone to subscribe to our feed, sign up for email alerts or simply check the website on a regular basis.

Site News

Jeremiah was on The Wakeup Call with Patrick Schmidt in Chicago last week to discuss Hyde, Roby and the Buckeyes.

Shannon also shared a personal story on his fight against testicular cancer. This has nothing to do with OSU sports, but is a reminder that there are things much more important that what a bunch of meatheads do on a football field on any given Saturday.

Recruiting

Dylan chatted with class of 2014 commit Parris Campbell who said that even though he’s fully committed to Ohio State and has shut down his recruitment, other teams “like TTUN, Alabama, and a lot of other schools” haven’t given up. Dylan also caught up with Terrence Alexander, a 3-star cornerback out of Louisiana. And finally, the tireless Dylan talked with Class of 2014 RB Corey Avery.

Jeremiah spoke at length with Class of 2016 center Alex Gourley. He seems like a smart kid who definitely value academics:

Academics have a large influence on my choice of schools. Stanford, Notre Dame, Duke, UNC Chapel Hill, and OSU all have great economic/business programs, which is the field of study I wish to pursue.

Jeremiah also spoke with Shaun Crawford, Class of 2015 WR/CB and a heavy Michigan lean. Can the Buckeyes convince this lifelong Wolverine fan to stay in state?

In case you missed it, Dylan also had an extensive an excellently researched Friday Light Nights preview. We hope to follow up with some of the Buckeye hopefuls with their experiences at the event.

Andrew spoke with Demetrius Knox, the #1 rated Guard of the Class of 2014. Many see the recently-decommitted (from Texas) Knox as an essential building block for the Buckeye offensive line. He’s acutely aware of his standing with the OSU coaches:

I talked to almost all of them. They told me that they have seen all of my film and I am their number one 2014 OL target.

Football

Oof, this was not a good week to be a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes Football team. We had to report some extremely distressing news, including allegations against Carlos Hyde and the arrest of Bradley Roby.

Rumors were swirling all around Columbus as stories came out that ultimately proved to be false (including the aforementioned Dispatch story that claimed Hyde had been booted off the team). Ohio State eventually released a press release that clarified certain aspects of what was happening with this team. Hyde was suspended indefinitely, Marcus Baugh has had to sit out team activities and will miss the first game against Buffalo and Tim Gardner was sent home after he was charged by Columbus Police with obstruction of official business. Roby was not permitted to attend Big Ten Media days (replaced by Christian Bryant) and could face additional discipline.

Speaking of Big Ten Media Days, we fans braced as we knew Meyer would be bombarded with questions concerning the team and everything that had transpired the weekend before. While he certainly addressed those questions, we here at MotSaG feel that Coach Meyer handled those questions with aplomb. He gets a bad rap from the media nationally, but locally we see that he really does care about his players and considers them family.

Coming up

Another week of recruitment, the top 15-10 B1G players and much more.

I am a Survivor

(This post has nothing to do with sports but deals with men’s health, I feel its an important topic and I wanted to share my story with you)

I woke up this morning feeling reminiscent but couldn’t put a finger on why. As I’m laying there slowly waking up there’s this nagging in the back of my head that I’m forgetting something, something important. Realizing there’s no way I can fall back asleep I jump out of bed to start my day. After getting dressed I grabbed my phone, wake it from its sleeping state and I see it. The date says July 27th, 2013. Like a brick smacking me in the face I have finally figured out what was so important that I have forgotten.

Before I realize what was so important I’m going to take you back in time for a little trip. Follow me won’t you. The year is 2006 and everything was going great in my life. Great job, awesome girlfriend who I would marry and good friends all around me. I’m starting to notice that I’m feeling kind of sick and run down more and more as each day passes. Also feeling pain in my abdominal area that’s not real high on the pain threshold but is nagging and getting more and more noticeable. I go to the doctor get some tests done but can’t figure out what’s exactly wrong. None of this makes any sense I know my body the doctor doesn’t and I’m being told basically its in my head.

Fighting through whatever this phantom thing that is happening to me, it is now the Summer of 2007. I’m at my wits end on why the pain in my abdominal area is getting stronger so much so that its affecting my work. At this time I’m a garbage man and every time I’m lifting I feel this nagging pain get stronger and stronger. Mind you all through this time I have noticed one of my testicles wasn’t feeling right but I was shrugging this off to be part of the phantom pain and tiredness I was feeling, plus it is embarrassing to have another man feel your package so I kept quiet. My girlfriend finally stepped in and said she had had enough of this and if I didn’t go to the doctor and have him check out my testicle she was going to drag me in there and do it. Well what’s more embarrassing now just tell the doctor or having your girlfriend dragging you. I chose to tell him.

During the exam I explain to the doctor I have been feeling discomfort in my left testicle and have noticed it feels like there are now two in there instead of one and starting to feel really hard. I get the old please drop your drawers lets have a look. Oh boy is this the most uncomfortable thing to go through (turns out no, more later). He feels around and and says I’m not liking this at all and he takes that light the use to look in your ears and mouth and shines it underneath. Yup this is what I feared you might have cancer see how the light is not coming through its all dark. I said yes. He then takes the light to under the right one and there’s this pink glow like when you take a flashlight and put it under your hand. This is what it is suppose to look like i’m going to schedule you for ultrasound and we will go from there.

Hmm An ultrasound doesn’t sound that painful, no pain involved since no needles how bad can this be. Well this is where being really really uncomfortable begins. You get dressed up in your little hospital gown, they have you lay on the table. You see the machine and you think to yourself this is going to be easy. Then the nurse walks in and she’s a looker, Houston we may have a problem. I have never prayed so much as to be courteous and professional and keep my manhood at bay. The problem arises if someone is playing with your junk other things happen they just do its uncontrollable. I am sweating feeling so uncomfortable but being on my best and doing a good job. The saving grace I believe is all that gel that dump on you. Finally the exam is over I won the battle, played it cool, no excitement i’m a professional! OK sir go ahead and stand up clean yourself off and get dressed after I leave the room. I’m super happy nothing happened, I get up and it felt like i was wearing a 55 gallon drum of this gel on me seemed to take forever to get it cleaned off and even then didn’t get it all until I showered. Sending me home she tells me they will send to the doctor I should find something out in a week I believe this is a Tuesday.

After work on Friday’s a bunch of friends and myself go up to a local watering hole to celebrate the end of a hard work week. Enjoying the company, debating sports telling stories of what we encountered during the week and just joking around. My phone rings, I look down at it and its my doctor. I excuse myself and answer the call. He tells me the ultrasound tests came back not a hundred percent certain but it does look like cancer and already have an appointment set up with the best urologist for next week. I go back to my friends and they see something is disturbing me so I tell them the news. No way it can be cancer buddy probably just something minor don’t worry about it. You know guys your probably right let me not bring this fun down forget I said anything. Now I know my friends were very concerned for me and trying to take my mind off of the news and I was happy they did.

The next week rolls around and my appointment is on a Wednesday, I rush over there right after work. Feeling a little nervous wondering whats lying ahead of me here and what we are going to do. After filling out all that fun paperwork every doctor has you fill out they put me back in the little room. Sitting in this room I look around and there is all kinds of stuff about getting checked out and early detection is the best cure for cancer. Now I’m getting scared if it is cancer did we catch it early am I to late? Seems like eternity before the door opens and the doctor comes in. He reaches out his hand for the traditional handshake tells me his name and the says “You have cancer”. What are you kidding me you don’t ease into this you just blurt out I have cancer. I’m stunned, knew it was a possibility but until you hear those words you have no idea how to react. All I remember is everything went black after hearing this. I knew he was still talking to me I could see his mouth moving but I couldn’t hear, feel, sense, think of anything. He was asking me a question and realized I wasn’t there. He said my name a few times and snapped me back to reality. He asks if I’m OK told him yes I was just a little stunned felt like I was getting punched in the gut. He says I don’t want to do a biopsy for risking it possibly spreading in the bloodstream just want to go in and remove the testicle itself then we will have that tested and go from there. OK sounds like a plan to me. He wants to do this on July 21st, I ask if this is so serious that it has to be that date or can we postpone it for a few cause that is my birthday. He looks at my chart and says sorry didn’t notice that lets go for the 27th.

On July 27th, 2007 I became cancer free after the removal of my left testicle. I had to have follow up radiation for like two months while I worked and that was no picnic. But in the end I was lucky because I listened to my girlfriend (now life saving wife) and had caught this early. I can tell you that any pain i feel anywhere in my body scares me wondering if it has come back. This is not something that anyone tells you. It is always in the back of your mind. Being a survivor is awesome and I’m lucky it was only Stage I testicular cancer and my body is cancer free now. My mind will always resort to what if its cancer and it sucks, can’t get rid of it but I’ll take it since I get to wake up and enjoy the sun rising and spending time with my family and friends. If I would have just kept ignoring it that blackness I felt after the doctor told me would be eternal not just a few moments like it was. Remember if something doesn’t feel right, look right get it checked out.

The Best of the B1G: #16 Ricardo Allen

b1g_iconRicardo Allen is a top cornerback for Purdue. He is a senior and is from Daytona Beach, Florida. Currently, he is rated 21 of 100 CBs from www.nfldraftscout.com. Clearly, he is gaining NFL exposure. He is expected to have a dominant senior season.

Here is a video to show his freshman and sophomore highlights. Clearly, he gets to the ball quickly to make tackles. He is also great at shedding blocks to get to the ball. He has good ball instincts and plays with tons of energy.

MotSaG Chat with Corey Avery

Interviewing the electric 2014 running back Corey Avery at 5″10 185 lbs who runs a blazing 4.45 40 yard dash was a pleasure, he’s a great kid and he will succeed wherever he ends up. Corey’s natural position is running back and he would be a great fit at OSU due to him also being able to lineup in the slot at receiver. He has very good vision which I think is Corey’s best quality. Corey hits the hole very hard and does not shy away from contact like most 175 lb running backs. Corey is from the prestigious Dallas Carter High School in Dallas, Texas. Corey is putting up outstanding numbers against the best high school football teams in the country. His stats this past season totaled 131 rushes for 839 yards including 13 touchdowns. Corey also hauled in 25 passes racking up 395 receiving yards resulting in 6 touchdowns.

247 lists corey as the # 29 overall all purpose back
Rivals lists Corey as the # 41 overall athlete
Scout lists Corey as the # 84 overall running back
