MotSaG featured on CSTV’s WebWatch

It’s a couple of weeks late, but we were waiting patiently for CSTV to post the video on its website.

CSTV’s Crystal Ball featured one of our recent posts that discussed the issue of fewer stats due to the new time rules.

We were quite geeked that CSTV gave us the attention. I’ll admit, though, it’s kinda odd to have Trev Alberts making comments on things that you have written. I picture him printing out our post, making notes in the margins, preparing comments for the taped show. Then I imagine him clicking through the rest of our site, and seeing that we’ve called him Mrs. Mark May, had him embedded in a laundry cart of jockstraps, and had Tressnac use him as fodder for one of his classic insults. Makes me feel warm inside.

You can find the video here. The segment begins at the 2:35 time mark (you may have to endure a short commercial first).

Slow posting this week

We have had a light posting week due to a lot of reasons, but mainly because we’ve been pretty content after the big victory in Austin. That being said, we’ve got some things in the pipeline and we’re all getting excited about “Seperation Saturday” (or as I like to call it “Win or DIE Saturday”).

  • We don’t really have a an in-depth analysis from the Texas game. Keith at Buckeye Commentary has that covered.
  • Even though we won’t be analyzing the Texas game too much, I took a look at the running game and found some interesting stats. I’ll have something up on that later.
  • I know it was cathartic to watch the Buckeye’s loss to Texas be avenged in convicing fashion, but whoever made this video Jeff is just being mean.
  • Men of the Scarlet and Gray were featured on CSTV’s Web Watch last week. The sportsMonkey has a copy of it, hopefully we’ll have it online soon.
  • For some strange reason, I’ve been thinking about Kellen Winslow Jr. and his maturation lately. I’m not really sure why, as I’ve never been a big fan of his. It’s been weird. More on that later.

Blogpoll Rountable #2

A little late, but better late than never. The questions, from Ciskie:

1. What team best met your overall expectations of them in their opener?

Zeke: Not be a homer, but I think I’d think it would be the Buckeyes. I think we (MotSaG) were able to pretty much predict the how the game would unfold (except my prediction was backwards, OSU dominated the first half). Explosive offense (the score could have been a lot more lop-sided) and a defense that is still trying to shore up a few things.

2. What team jumped off the map and surprised you the most? (Bonus points to anyone who can make an argument for someone besides Tennessee.)

Zeke: In my mind anyone who attempts to make an argument against the Tennessee / Cal game is off their rocker. This was the swing game of the college football weekend. Maybe Cal is not very good, but after watching about half of that game I thought Tennessee looked much better than advertised.

3. What team best moved themselves into a position to surprisingly contend for a national title?

Sylvester-Yon Rambo: Southern California. It may not be a surprise to some, but after losing all they have to the NFL and all their off the field problems. Not many are picking them to make it back. But with a very weak Pac 10 league and even weaker non-confrence schedule (Notre Dame is way overrated) they have the easiest path now to go undefeated again.

sportsMonkey: Oklahoma. Maybe writing them off after Bomar’s troubles was premature. Their season really boils down to Texas and Texas Tech.

Quick Hits

I know everyone in Buckeye Country is in Texas Game Mode, but if you’ve got a few minutes when you’re not thinking about The Longhorns, here are a few quick hits worth checking out:

Any Buckeye fan worth his salt has red-hot rage directed at ESPN’s wunderkind Mark May. Nothing makes us happier than watching him be wrong time after time. Well, the guys at markmaybewrong are positioning themselves as the Sports media watchdog. In particular, Mark May’s picks history are what we’re most interested in. The setup they’ve got is great and they’re doing really good work. Make sure you check them out.

I’ve been reading Will Collier, the Vodka Pundit, for a while and knew he was a Auburn football fan. Well, he’s launched a dedicated sports blog, From the Bleachers. I’m personally high on Auburn (I have them #2 in my personal poll) so FTB is a must read for me.

Last week, Sports Illustrated had their list of “Players who need to perform.” At number 2 was John Kerr. Unfortunately, he didn’t perform very well in the Northern Illinois (1 assist), prompting Ross Homan to pull even with him on the depth chart. Kerr’s had a tough road so far, I hope he kicks into a higher gear for Texas.

Want to know what’s it’s like to be a Cleveland sports fan? Just look at the names of a smattering of Cleveland Sports blogs:

Right. We’re not bitter.

There’s a piece at Bucknuts about Antonio Smith, our future starting cornerback, a former walk-on. He’s a Mechanical Engineer, which is quite impressive.

Sports Illustrated’s Top 5 collegiate mobile QBs (Troy, of course, is #1)

SI also looks at the maturation of Troy Smith.

More from SI, the top 15 games of the 2006 season. OSU/Michigan clocks in at #4 and OSU/Texas at #2. They have USC/ND as the number one game, which I don’t think is gonna mean much when Notre Dame will have already lost 2 games, but that’s just me. When we look back at this list, both OSU games will mean more.

Some unfortunate (but deserved) news about former Indian Albert Belle. He’s in a little trouble for being a little too interested in an ex-girlfriend. From the sound of his technical prowess, I wonder if he was an Electrical Engineer.

Tickets to the OSU/Texas game last year were a hot commodity, and it looks like it’s no different for this year’s game in Texas.

The guys at MGoBlog look at OSU’s season, albeit from a Wolverine’s perspective. The best quote, though, comes from their look at the kickers:

I swear to God that if this Ryan Pretorius or Aaron Pettry kid is another Nugent or Huston I am going to flip out and kill stuff. It’s MGoBlog policy not to speculate on unproven kickers, but seriously: flip out and kill stuff. You have been warned.

Link Roundup #3

This is a couple weeks old, but as a gamer myself, this article about the ECU football players reacting to their digital-selves in EA’s football game, NCAA 2007, is pretty interesting.

Every Indians fan knows that Travis Hafner, aka Pronk, is one of the best players in the league. He’s often compared to Big Papi, David Ortiz. Ben Valentine at Sportszilla look at the stats and use them to show the Pronk is, in fact, the most feared designated hitter in the American League.

OSU Fan favorite Bam Childress has a chance to make the New England Patriot’s roster. Go Bam!

Speaking of Buckeyes with their NFL stock rising, Simon Fraser has been turning heads at Browns camp.

Dennis Dodd, CBSportsline extraordinaire, seems to have had a brain aneurysm or some other blunt trauma to his brain as he was compiling his list of the top 25 college football stadiums, as he seems to have left of The Horseshoe. Huh? This guy knows his college football!

Keith at Buckeye Commentary takes a look at Freshmen that will probably be redshirting this season. His lists look spot on, solid work as always.

The outlook isn’t good for Mike D’Andrea: Chronic knee problems may keep him from playing this season. This kills me, as I was a huge fan of D’Andrea when he splashed on to the scene as a freshman. He was a freak of nature back then. Now it looks like he might not have been built for the wear and tear of football at this level.

Link roundup #2

Some links from the past week or so in sports:

Cleveland’s Travis Hafner has tied Don Mattingly’s record for number of Grand Salamis in a season – 6. He’s got two months to get the record all to himself.

Ex-Trojan LenDale White spit on the wrong person at Tennessee’s practice last week – Buckeye Donnie Nickey. If you get a chance, watch the video over at ESPN. It’s educational — at USC you can attend “Win Friends and Influence People 101” taught by Robbie Alomar, where you learn, among other things, the lost art of spitting on people. At OSU, you learn life-long lessons, like how a football helmet can be used an assault weapon.

You might have heard this before, but the Buckeyes are rebuilding their defense. Defensive Coordinator Jim Heacock says there’s still work to do. He does have positive news about Mike D’Andrea and says MotSaG favorite Vernon Gholston is looking good.

Alex Boone, after a brush with the law earlier this year, came clean about his drinking problem. And by problem, we mean drinking more beer in a day than a family of four drinks water. In a week.

And finally, we’ll let James Laurinaitis sum up what the next 18 days are going to be like while we wait for College Football to start:

Someone wake me up September 2nd

Welcome to MotSaG!

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to all our new readers to the Men of the Scarlet and Gray (MotSaG, for short) It’s been a busy weekend here at the casa of the Men of the Scarlet and Gray. First off, I was notified this weekend that we’ve been invited to take part in the 2006 Blog Poll, which should be a lot of fun. Since we’re a multi-blogger outfit here, we’ll work together on a weekly basis to put our poll together. We’re looking forward to participating in the BlogPoll festivities, as well.

Then we were linked earlier today by both The M Zone (It’s ironic to be linked by the M Zone on the very same day I was pointed in the direction of this video. How apropos.) and Deadspin, so thanks to you guys for the links. Unfortunately, the 1and1.com server that hosts our site took a big dump earlier today and the site has been off and on for the better part of the afternoon. We appreciate those of you that have tried more than once to access the site, hopefully you were able get through eventually.

Looking at the referral logs, it appears we’ve also been linked on the Texas Rivals message board. Unfortunately it’s behind their paid subscriber wall, so we don’t know what it’s about. If you’ve come from Orange Bloods, let us know what brought you here.

So again, welcome to our humble blog. We hope you’ll add us to your bookmarks, your deli.cio.us bookmarks, your Bloglines, your whatever and check back often. Especially if you’re a Buckeye fan, because it’s a good year to be a Buckeye!

Link Roundup

Here are some links you need to be reading.

The most excellent Notre Dame blog, The Blue-Gray Sky, just finished up their look back at OSU’s four big plays from the Fiesta Bowl. It’s excellent work, we tip our hat to them. You can see their breakdown of: Ginn’s 56 yard catch, Ginn’s 68 yard reverse, Santonio’s 85 yard catch, and Pittman’s 60 yd run.

Speaking of Notre Dame, I was going to write up a post about why I think Notre Dame’s chances of getting to the Fiesta Bowl are slim, but Joe Schlabach has already done that. That schedule is going to be bah-root-al. Good luck with that, Weis & Co.

Troy Smith lists his five favorite players to watch, with a sideways shoot-out to his main man, TGJ. He’s also puffing up future OSU opponent Garrett Wolfe. Garrett Wolfe?

The Ciskie Blog has posted his Big Ten preview, with the Scarlet and Gray leading the pack. The Sports Network, on the otherhand, has OSU at #3.

Sean at The 614 let’s us in on his private Q&A wherein he discusses the 2006 Buckeyes. Sean isn’t as bullish on the OSU offense as we are, but he’s got a valid point – Tressel loves to control the clock and run the ball. We still think (and hope) that OSU is going to air it out more than they have in the past, but with a backfield of Pitmann and Wells2, you can’t really blame them. Sean hits it on the nose with:

They should be able to move the ball effectively on the ground and in the air, and they’ll put some points on the board, but I think Tressel would prefer a 28-17 win with a big edge in time of possession over a 42-31 win with a more even time of possession.

Have to agree with him on that point, no argument here. I just want to see 500 yards and 42 points every once and a while.

Also, in MotSaG news, we should have our preview of the Secondary up soon. Stay tuned!

Blog Poll Roundtable

Since this is the inaugural season for Men of the Scarlet and Gray, it will also be our first participation in the Blog Poll (if we get accepted, that is). That being said, we can’t resist an invitation to talk about the most important people here, Us. Besides, since MotSaG is relatively new, this will give you a chance to learn a little about us (each MotSaG contributor will update this post with their own answers). So without further ado, from EDSBS, we present to you our answers to the Blog Poll Roundtable.
