Troy Recap

I’m just now plugging in from pretty much an entire week of being off the grid. I haven’t seen what the chatter around the Buck-o-sphere is yet, but I imagine there are a few themes developing already. I read YNBA’s bit about a neutered offense, but here are a few more things from the OSU/Troy game:

  • First and foremost, let’s all have a moment of silence for Todd Boeckman’s career at Ohio State. The dude never complained and never gave up but just didn’t have the tools. It’s a shame it ends like this, but I certainly hope it has ended. It leads me to my next point.
  • Terrell Pryor is the deal. He is not the real deal. He is the deal that others will be compared against to ascertain their realness or lack thereof.

He looked very good out there on Saturday. There are times when he makes moves that just leave defenders looking foolish. A simple shimmy-shake and he’s past two guys three different times. He is everything he was cracked up to be and I think there are hundreds of fans breathing a sigh of relief that he is worth it.

Finally, all was not perfect. Yes, he threw four TDs but Pryor’s passing game has a lot of work to be done. His passes were floaty and bird-like. Most weren’t crisp and his delivery still makes me nervous. Still, four TDs are four TDs.

All in all, Buckeye fans have a lot to be excited about. A young QB getting in some great time and really looking comfortable. It’s been said before, I’ll say it again — it’s 2004 all over again. Say hello to the future.

  • Pryor looks good and extremely promising, but all is not well with the offense. Bollman and the entire offensive coaching staff needs revamping. Calling it predictable would be insulting to predictable offenses. I know this game was Tressel-ball in a nutshell (field position, special teams, low score) but I’m tired of Tressel-ball. I’m tired of I-formations when everyone in the stadium knows we’re going off-tackle. Mix it up. Pass on first, run bootlegs, ANYTHING. We have the most exciting freshman in the country. Unleash the beast.
  • The offensive line. Ugh. It needs major work. It was good seeing freshmen get solid minutes but some of the upperclassmen need to step up the effort. In one play in particular, a simple option play looked promising at the outset until Person got blowed-up and pushed into the backfield, disrupting everything. Plays like this happen too often. The freshmen didn’t play perfectly, either, but hopefully the good will continue to outweigh the bad.
  • Daniel “Boom” Herron is a little fireplug. Very fun to watch. He’s no Beanie, but then again, no one else is.
  • As the monkey mentioned in the previous post, the defense still looks solid. Coleman and Hines are both looking extremely good. Freeman looked weak, however. Troy has an offense that is going to gain some yards but the defense did a good job keeping them out of the endzone.
  • The punting game was about as effective as it gets. This needs to continue for the Buckeyes to have shots against Penn State and Wisconsin.

We’d love to hear some of your thoughts on the Troy game. Sorry for the late posting, but being away from an actual computer has been cathartic.

Site difficulties

It appears that our illustrious web host is currently crapping itself, so I apologize for the intermittent service at the moment. We’re on the case and hopefully things should be back to normal soon.

ZOMG…I can haz newtrd ofenz???

New Personnel...Same Approach...I just love it, love it, love it, love it....

Guess how many passes on first down in the second half? Not many…maybe one. I guess this is Bollman and JT’s approach to “getting better.”

If it wasnt for the pure talent of Terelle Pryor, the Troy Trojans would have won this game since T. Boeckman looked like “2004 Zwick” on his only series of the day. It was a good ride Todd…enjoy the pine, brother.

Bottom Line (excluding TP’s highlight reel playmaking ability)…

This was not enjoyable football. This was like being forced to watch New Jersey Devils game from the mid to late 90’s over and over again.

I am sure the Kaiser and SM will have some more commentary…Liverpool drew with Stoke City which is ‘teh suck.’ I am sure this will be an awesome Saturday. Somebody get Danielson an extra bib today…that much Tebow drool is borderline ridiculous.

Week #4: Troy University – Open Thread

No time for posts, just Open Threads. Blogging should resume its regularly scheduled programming (ha!) soon.

Will the Buckeyes win?

Do you hear that? That is the sound of inevitability

…the sound of Columbus becoming an Indians town…

There was nothing more annoying about living in Columbus than hearing about how everyone was a Yankee fan, because the Clippers were the AAA affiliate for the club. I mean really…who wouldnt be a Yankee fan when you would get to watch Derek Jeter play in Columbus for about 12 minutes and then leave for the Bronx. Remember watching Drew Henson get booed nightly for attending UM and sucking at baseball…that was awesome. Finally and thankfully, those days could be over…

It was made “unoffically” official today, the Indians have signed up the Columbus Clippers to be the club’s top minor league team (AAA) for the next four years. This relationship will begin when the Clippers open the 2009 season in it’s new downtown ballpark “Huntington Field in the Arena District.”

I wonder if Mo Vaughn bought into this?

I wonder if Mo Vaughn bought into this?

Out to Lunch

As you have probably guessed, there won’t be a MotSaG blogpoll ballot this week. The monkey and I are on business travel this week, so blogging will be light and dealing with the world’s slowest wireless network connections prevented us from getting our blogpoll ballot put together. Blogging should resume normally this weekend.

We also noticed that we have failed to submit our ballot the week after every Buckeye loss since we’ve been participating in the BlogPoll. Up until this week, this was not coincidental. This week it was.

Being outside of Central Ohio, we haven’t been around to witness the aftermath of the weather that went through earlier this week (although it did delay our flight by three hours) nor have we been able to witness the fallout of yet another crapping-of-the-bed against a powerhouse. We are thankful for our fellow Buckeye bloggers keeping us in the loop.

Just wanted to check in let everyone know we’re not dead. Except for the inside. We’re definitely dead on the inside after last Saturday.

Wednesday’s weekend reflections and meh…

Alright…I have had a few days to take in the massacre and it’s effects

Extreme situations often call for extreme measures. These measures do not include Todd Boeckman on a QB run on 2nd and 22. My god JT, wtf was that? Then again, maybe Todd was rolling out to throw to the TE..*laughing so hard there is significant pain in my side regions*

Every team that plays OSU knows that they are damaged goods right now. I havent seen an OSU team quit like that since Iowa in 2004. No heart…no fire…ridiculous.

Positives from the weekend for OSU…ahem..let’s just move onto another topic.

  • Oh wait…Terrell Pryor gets to play a lot more this weekend…or so we are led to believe.

Positives from the weekend for YNBA and some other jottable notes…

  • Watched Oklahoma demolish Washington. Seriously Buckeye fans, thank goodness the team wasnt spending the past weekend in Norman. Sam Bradford was nothing short of incredible (18-21, 300+ yards, 5 Touchdowns). Oklahoma (Not USC) looked like a well-oiled machine this past weekend, but the hype wasnt there with the game occurring in LA. Granted, this was Washington’s defense, but OU’s performance was efficient and lethal from the beginning of the game until the very end.
  • It was nice to see one of my teams show up this weekend. Liverpool FC decided that it had seen enough of Manchester United’s shenanigans and finally beat them (2-1) for the first time in Premiership play in almost five years. With the exception of a John O’Shea OG, it had almost been the same amount of time since Liverpool had actually scored a goal of any kind against ManU. The Mascherano-Kuyt-Babel connection put the game away in the 77th minute to set the Anfield faithful into a frenzy (Cue Seven Nation army and chant ‘Jav-i-er Ma-scher-a-no‘ over and over again). For the non-soccer types, pace and momentum matter just as much in soccer and football, and Liverpool carried the play to ManU for a good portion of the first half and dominated in the second.
  • The Columbus Crew settled for a 1-1 draw in Canada against Toronto FC. This draw sealed the deal on Columbus maintaining possession of the Trillium Cup. This draw on Saturday was really a win, as there were no Columbus fans accosted by Toronto FC supporters outside of the BMO, which seems to be occurring with greater frequency as this rivalry continues to grow. Crazy Canadians…
  • Champions League Group Stage play began on Tuesday (If you dont understand how the Champions League works…ask…because it is confusing as all get out, then attempt to ponder how crazy College Football would be in this format). Liverpool took out Marseille 2-1, as ‘The Captain’ Steven Gerrard provided some magic in the form of two goals to rally the Reds from 1-0. FC Barcelona also won it’s opening match against Sporting Lisbon 3-1.
  • Seems like the media has finally started to lay off of the Buckeyes after this weekend’s performance. Even Pete Fiutak has provided some perspective (See Part III), which is refreshing in that it comes from a national media type, as even the Herbstreit’s of the world have seemed to bash or distance themselves from the Buckeyes as much as possible.
  • Painfully going back to the USC game…I am not an expert in the ways of football or schemes, but it doenst appear to me that OSU is any less athletic than other elite teams (NFL draft numbers will generally support this claim). Once you infer that OSU may actually have the same type of speed and athleticism on its squad, the question of what differentiates the teams comes into play. All I know is that from other sports that I do participate, the less you have to think the more effective you are on the field. This especially holds true on defense. If the OSU offense is as predictable as everyone believes, then most teams will be able to pin their ears back and go to town, as they will have a pretty good idea of what is coming almost every time. I am going to stop here on this topic, but think about every time the OSU offense is faced with a 3rd or 4th and short…you’ve already called the play. OSU is running a slow developing play to the tailback. It doenst matter which one it is…you just know it is going to be painful to watch and in a lot of cases it just isnt going to cut it

I think that it is safe to say that no one is giving up on the season (players or fans), but if the current trends including lack of creativity and utter lack of execution at any level continue…this will be a long season. Things dont get any easier this Saturday, as Troy comes to town and is still looking for a signature win against one of the D-I big boys. I hope the Bucks are ready for Troy’s best shot. Maybe it is time for the Buckeye faithful to start singing YNWA before every kickoff…to re-affirm thy friendship to the O-HI-O.

Most pathetic performance in Buckeye football history

What else is there to say?

The gameplan was wrong. The players didn’t execute. The coaches made every single mistake possible, from non-innovative and non-aggressive playcalling to the the benching of Beanie. (Why, at least he might be healthy for Troy next week – let’s keep our priorities straight.) OSU has 20 returning starters, but you’d never know by watching this loss.

Yes, it’s just a game; and it’s not about winning and losing. But for the university to be humiliated again and again and again on the national stage can’t continue to happen. Ohio State – with the best football tradition of any school, cannot afford to keep being a pathetic punchline to the rest of college football.

What do you think happened to every single high school football player tonight? Think they’re considering OSU now?

Time to make some radical changes. I suggest you start with the assistant coaches. Clean out the old, unimaginative coaches (starting with the underachieving Jim Bollman), and give some new ones a shot. Give them a season or two, and if OSU continues to embarrass and disgust fans and recruits, then it might be time to find someone else to wear the sweatervest.

OK – so we have to find a silver lining – could you imagine a better trial-by-fire for a freshman Terrell Pryor than this one? And he played admirably, to boot (though he did miss a sure TD in the late 3rd quarter with a wide-open Hartline down the field).

Oh, well. Now we start rooting for a Big 10 championship.

OSU/USC Semi-live Update

Pregame

Just getting things ready. Not sure how many people will actually be checking the site, as I’m sure everyone will be glued to the TV, but if you do, feel free to vent in the comments.

First quarter
After two possessions, I think it’s clear that this is going to be a defensive slugfest. Malcolm Jenkins made an excellent open field tackle on McKnight. Now we just need to get some rhythm this offensive series.

Pryor is being used to great effect with this drive, but they’re being predictable in the red zone. We’ll take a field goal and chewing up clock. Of course we want a TD, but we’ll take what we can get.

USC – 0
OSU – 3

On what looked like a broken assignment, USC’s FB sneaks out for a little pass play up the sideline for a quick touchdown.

USC – 7
OSU – 3

Second quarter
USC’s offense is a well-oiled machine. Someone on defense is going to have to get pressure on Sanchez. He has entirely too much time. OSU needs another drive to take some time. The penalty on USC should help out.

USC – 14
OSU – 3

Stop with the PENALTIES BUCKEYES!!!

I don’t want to say it yet, but I have to. These PAC-10 officials are worse then high school refs. Does the phrase “ticky tack” mean anything to them?

Excellent to see the Buckeye defense get USC off the field. Laurinaitis is playing extremely well right now. Keep it up D!!

Boeckman throws the ball directly to Maualuga, who steps out at the 5 yard line. Someone please tell me what the officials in the booth were looking at!

USC – 21
OSU – 3

Chekwa just made an extremely athletic play to make a beautiful interception to end the half.

Half-time
Some half-time thoughts: I’ve been accused of being a Boeckman lover in the past, but I’m about done with that. Pryor comes in and absolutely gashes USC’s D, and then Boeckman airmails a pass to Maualuga. I want to see A LOT more Pryor in the second half. You might say that I have a fever, and more Pryor would make me feel better.

Even though the scoreboard doesn’t reflect it, we are in this game. Take away the INT and get that TD and/or 46 yard field goal and this is a different game. Be that as it may, we’re still in striking distance, but the defense has to throw a shut out in the second half.

Third Quarter
They’re only going to be able to lean on the defense for so long, Boeckman. It’s time to step up.

I will say that last sack on Boeckman ended with a late hit from Maualuga. That was a dirty spear.

Fourth Quarter
It’s all about pride now.

USC: 35
OSU: 3

I’m getting tired of USC’s players constantly looking for flags. We know this is your officiating crew, but just stop it.

Countdown to Kickoff!

2008-9-13 20:22:00 GMT-04:00

Update: Take this for what it is (a 3rd-handed rumor) but we’ve heard that if Beanie plays, look for a backfield of Beanie, Pryor and Boeckman. Could be scary. If Beanie doesn’t play, look for a dual-QB backfield.

Also, I updated the clock to reflect an 8:22 PM kickoff, which I believe is the scheduled kickoff time.
