The Spread, Week 2: Unrivaled

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly recently made comments that kind of made it seem like he didn’t think the school’s football rivalry with Michigan was as big a deal as some other rivalries the Irish are involved in (one assumes he means USC). ESPN decided this meant that Kelly doesn’t consider Michigan a rival at all, an interpretation that is certainly unrelated to the fact that they have a vested interest in getting eyeballs on this game. Mark May and Skip Bayless each wistfully recalled a childhood full of imaginary Wolverine/Irish battles that never actually happened (and in Bayless’ case, featured at least one player that never suited up for either school).

Personally, I find the game quite enjoyable, even though I generally hate both teams. There are a handful of games like that throughout the country, games that don’t require a major rooting interest to enjoy. Our Buckeyes are part of one, at times called the greatest rivalry in sports (although I doubt many outside the two fanbases still believe that). ESPN is currently conducting a survey on the topic, and The Game does indeed occupy the top spot (at least, as of this writing). I don’t think you’d get many unbiased arguments about the top seven or so on that list, order notwithstanding.

So instead of throwing out another list of what some idiot thinks are the best rivalries, I’m going to actually figure it out, at least in terms of competitiveness. Among the factors under consideration here are winning percentage of each team, recent average margin of victory, total number of games played and national championship relevance.

Here are the Top Five:

1. The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party: Bonus points to Florida and Georgia for not even agreeing on how many games they’ve played. This matchup takes the top spot based on impressive numbers in recent competitiveness: The Gators lead over the past 10 years, but only 6-4. Average margin of victory over that span is just 11 points, despite a couple of Florida blowouts. The two teams have a combined 10 BCS bowl appearances, with 7 wins and 2 national titles.

Players to Watch: San Diego State Week 2

San Diego State

Colin Lockett #24:  Despite San Diego State’s embarrassing loss, to FCS side Eatern Illinois, Lockett’s performance was one of the bright spots of the day, for the Aztecs.  Lockett registered 8 catches, for 98 yards, and also had one rushing attempt, for 48 yards, that went for a touchdown.  Lockett is a wide receiver that stands 5-11, 180 pounds, and is a speedster.  The Buckeyes will need to keep Lockett in front of them, and wrap him up whenever they get the opportunity, due to his ability to blow the top off a defense, with one touch of the ball.  Lockett will most likely be matched up against Bradley Roby, so I would expect Lockett to have a pretty quiet afternoon.

Five Things I Think: After Week 1!

FootballWeek 1 is nearly in the books with only the matchup between Florida State and Pittsburgh tonight remaining. Jameis Winston, the talented redshirt freshman, will be making his debut as the Seminoles’ starter. Given a supporting cast that includes running backs James Wilder Jr. and Devonta Freeman along with receivers Rashad Greene and Kenny Shaw, Florida State’s offense has to the potential to be very explosive this season. Hopefully, Winston and company will finish off a great first weekend of college football that included several upsets, some Manziel drama, and a few less-than-stellar performances by top teams including #1 Alabama and #2 Ohio State. Sunday’s game between Louisville and Ohio included Teddy Bridgewater playing beautifully, the return of Michael Dyer, and an amazing play by Ohio kick returner Devin Bass in which he shows incredible balance! Watch here!

1. Seven FCS teams beat FBS teams! This is why it doesn’t matter how teams matchup on paper, folks. Anything can happen and it’s that unpredictability that draws us to this game that we love. #25 Oregon State lost to Eastern Washington and Kansas State was brought down by North Dakota State. To be fair, North Dakota State is the two-time defending FCS national champions and Eastern Washington won 11 games last season so it’s not as if these two teams are horrible. Additionally, while KSU was a BCS team last season, it lost a quarterback who was responsible for 68% of its offensive yardage. Southern Utah (who beat South Alabama) and Northern Iowa (who beat Iowa State) each had losing records last season but still had more combined wins (10) than their opponents (8). South Florida (who lost big to McNeese State and UConn (who lost to Towson) but given USF won just three games last season and is in rebuilding mode that wasn’t all that surprising. UConn won just five games last season and we can’t forget that Towson played pretty well against LSU last season. The Eastern Illinois’ 40-19 beat down of San Diego State was the one that was most surprising. San Diego State was a 9-win team last year that beat the likes of Nevada and Boise State, while Eastern Illinois won just seven games and finished its season with a 48-point FCS playoff loss.

MotSaG Top 25 Poll- Week 1

Not a ton of movement in this weeks poll. Not a lot of marquee matchups either. So we will have to stay pretty similar. I think the biggest movement will be in the top 10. Here goes nothing.

Players to Watch: Buffalo Week

Buffalo
#46 Khalil Mack- This is the best football player in the country you have never heard of. He is a pure 3-4 outside linebacker that stands 6’3, 248 pounds, and is extremely versatile. NFL scouts have recently picked up on Mack’s talent due to his excellent 2012 season. Mack recorded 94 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, and 8 sacks, in just 11 games last season. Some scouts have Mack going as high as the 1st round. Despite his lack of notoriety out of high school, Mack has made a name for himself as a complete linebacker, who is not only an elite pass rusher, but also able to drop in to coverage. Mack is an elite football player who can reek havoc if not contained. He will provide an early, major test against Mewhort and true sophomore Taylor Decker.

MotSaG TV Guide

College Football is back just in time for a long holiday weekend! You can celebrate the end of your 234-day sports prison sentence by watching games for five straight days (if you agree to lower your standards a little).

Thursday

6:00pm

North Carolina at South Carolina. You would think this game would happen more often than it does, but there is no historical animosity to fuel a good old-fashioned border-war college football rivalry. The colony of Carolina split so amicably in 1712 that it makes Bruce and Demi look like Alec and Kim (I had to Google that entire sentence). UNC is probably good enough to keep things interesting at least until you finish your wings. (ESPN)

Buckeyes to feast on Buffalo Wings: Preview

When I first started to do this preview I swear this is all I was thinking about…

I am sitting here racking my brain on how to write this preview. We all have a feeling about how it will go. Buffalo is vastly undermanned and will face a team that has been pushed hard all summer and has a lot of pent up aggression. On top of all that Ohio State is in the title game talk and Coach Meyer knows against these weaker teams they must put on a show for the voters so they will forget the fact that OSU is playing Buffalo.

Here is what I what I have discovered in my prep of the game preview.

Buffalo on Offense

Buffalo is lead by Sr. Running Back Branden Oliver a 5’8″ 210 lbs guy from Miami, Florida. Branden is a small scatback guy with tremendous speed. He avg over 100 yards a game last year in 8 games and over 5 yards a carry. His highlight reel is very impressive for a smaller guy he has no problem running between the tackles and taking the hits for the tougher yards.

5 Things I think: Going into week 1!

The college football season is finally here! The final BCS season is upon us and we start it off with three televised games Thursday night that include two players that will get some Hiesman hype (JaDaveon Clowney & Marqise Lee), the top recruit from the class of 2013 (Robert Nkemdiche), and the arguably the best receiver in the SEC (Jordan Matthews). We finish the first week of games (a stretch of five straight days of college football) with a game that will highlight the next redshirt freshman phenom in the nation in Jameis Winston of Florida State on Monday night. There are several top-ranked teams playing in games that have no reason to be competitive while there are several games on the docket that could potentially hurt national title runs. We won’t get to see Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “Football” Manziel until the second half … of the Rice game … because of his violation of the spirit of a bylaw. I’m just glad we’ll finally get to talk about something this kid does on the field rather than on Twitter or at a frat party. Over thirty teams will break in a new head coach, including the return of the polarizing Bobby Petrino (Western Kentucky) who faces off against first-time head coach Mark Stoops (Kentucky). There are two teams (Oregon & Wisconsin) with first-year head coaches and three teams (Ohio State, Texas A&M, & UCLA) with head coaches in their second year that are ranked in the AP Top 25. All that being said, let’s go ahead and dive into some games!

1. North Carolina at #6 South Carolina (5pm CST Thursday on ESPN): I’d like to start by saying I hate that we’re starting the 2013 season without Marcus Lattimore on South Carolina’s roster. I was hoping he’d take a medical redshirt so we could see him play in the first season with the playoff system. However, it was a great gamble by 49ers GM Trent Baalke taking Lattimore in the fourth round of April’s NFL Draft and one I think will pay off as early as the 2014 season. JaDaveon Clowney, who we haven’t seen since he made the hit of the season on Michigan running back Vincent Smith in the Outback Bowl, takes the field tonight amid preseason Heisman hype. He faces off against a Tar Heels team that is now eligible for postseason play and is led by an underrated quarterback named Bryn Renner. He’ll need some help from his secondary because Renner will certainly test them as long as he’s upright. UNC head coach Larry Fedora is in his second season and I expect his team to make a run at the ACC title (they would have won the Coastal Division last season if they had been eligible). Steve Spurrier has named sophomore Mike Davis as the starter at running back and I liked what he did in spot service behind Lattimore and Kenny Miles last season. This game will be more competitive than most people seem to think it will be, but remember that South Carolina didn’t start the season off strongly last season either as they struggled in a win against Vanderbilt. North Carolina will be a good team. The Gamecocks will leave the field winners, but I don’t see them winning big.

The Spread, Week 1: Don’t Stop Believin’

College football season. It’s the Sopranos to the off-season’s Jersey Shore. Now, finally, you can forget about autographs, tattoos, and dead fake internet girlfriends. Yes, these things will have an impact on the games we watch, but when the ball goes over, the only thing that matters is 57,600 square feet of grass (or, more likely, sand and rubber and polyethylene fiber).

Each year, for a few months in the autumn and winter, we are lucky enough to have seats at another performance of the world’s greatest dramatic masterpiece. Unscripted, improvised, the whole of a college football season is unpredictable, unknowable until it plays out in front of us. This is a nice little piece of irony from the universe, as the sport is built on the hard work of coaches and players who spend countless (or rather, strictly counted) hours attempting to know, predict, and script success for their teams.

For our teams.

B1G Power Rankings- Pre-Season

Well it is finally here GAME WEEK. After what seems to be par for the norm for OSU fans an extremely long off-season we are at that point where we will see posts about actual football games. This post is to discuss the B1G Power Rankings and I will try to be as unbiased as possible :)…

1.) Ohio State- What can I say about OSU that hasn’t already been said 1000 times? Nothing is the answer. The only team on their schedule that could beat them is themselves. Sure there are a couple of tough games but on paper they are head and shoulders above everyone else.

2.) Nebraska- Nebraska is returning most of their offense from lasts years team. They have great talents at QB, WR, and RB. The OL is corn fed. The defense has to have gotten better then they were the last few years, right?

3.) Northwestern- Pat Fitzgerald is the second best coach in the B1G IMO. He has 2 really good QBs and knows how to use them. Venric Mark is the perfect Scat Back for his offense. They are better on defense then most will admit. Can they take the next step is the biggest question.

4.) Wisconsin- Wisconsin is Wisconsin. They will be starting a veteran QB although he won’t be great. The RBs are STACKED and run 3-4 deep most would start on any other team in the country let alone B1G. Jared Abbrederis is a blue collar WR who will make plays and be under covered. The Defense is an area of concern IMO>

5.) Michigan State- Mark Dantonio is a Tressel coaching descendant. He will play awesome defense and have a good running game. He may have a bit of a QB controversy right now but I think you will see a lot of both QBs early on.

6.) Michigan- Here is the thing for me… I know most will say I am just being an OSU homer and my bias has blinded my judgement. Maybe it has maybe it hasn’t. Truth is They have lost their best defensive player and offensive player from last years team. Jake Ryan is due back but how effective will he be? The WR corp lost its biggest member in Amara Darboh to a foot injury for the year. Hoke signed 11 really high ranked OLmen in the last 2 years and took until today to name all 5 starters and one of them is a walk-on. Devin Gardner has to stay healthy and play even better then he did last year. Stud freshman RB recruit Derrick Green showed up to school and was overweight and out of shape and he is now the 5TH STRING RB. Without Jake Ryan the LBers are less than impressive. The DBs are great on paper and will need to keep performing that way. The DL is good on the ends but the middle has been soft so that needs to change as well. Brady Hoke also needs to get his team to play better on the road.

7.) Indiana- Offensively this team will put up a ton of points on just about everyone. The problem will be and always has been the defense. If they want to move up this list they need to play better defense.

8.) Penn State- Last year PSU played inspired and determined. They lost a lot of senior leadership though and need a lot of young guys to step up and buy into Bill O’Brien’s program.

9.) Iowa- This is most likely Kirk Ferentz last year. The running game will be good and so will the defense. The QB is young and inexperienced.

10.) Purdue- I really hope Darrell Hazell can rebuild the Boilermakers but I think he is a few years away still. He does have some talent though to work with and could surprise some teams for sure.

11.) Minnesota- Jerry Kill needs a miracle and a ton of new players this team needs heck I don’t even know. They need Glen Mason back he seemed to know how to make the Gophers decent and a bowl eligible team.

12.) Illinois- Poor Tim Beckman he should have never taken the job with the Illini. He has 18 year starter Nathan Scheelhaase is this the year he isn’t horrible? They need to play better at every aspect of the game.

I am sure many will have opinions about this so feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section of this post and next week when I do this again I will take them into account or maybe I won’t you never really know with me.
