Congrats to Little Animal and Terrelle Pryor

A couple huge MotSaG congratulations go out to James Laurinaitis and Terrelle Pryor, who were named the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year and Big Ten Freshman of the Year, respectively. The awards were announced Monday night.

This should be the beginning of a plethora of awards thrown in the direction of the Ohio State players this year, and just the beginning of what Pryor will eventually be crowned with (three Heisman trophies, if you were wondering).

We’ll miss Little Animal, and welcome him into the Pantheon of Ohio State Linebackers of Destruction.

Dropped Out:

We missed last week’s Blogpoll due to my being out of town, but here is our submission for this week’s Blogpoll. It was very satisfying dropping LSU from the ranks. Also, making an appearance as the only 4-loss team, Ole Miss gets a nod for beating the current #3 team and LSU in the same season. The rest is here for your perusal and advice.

Week #13 Open Thread and OSU/Michigan Semi-live update

I’m giving Monkey the day off (though I know he’ll be active in the comments) and I’ll handle the semi-live update today. I’ve noticed that in previous semi-live blogs, I haven’t given much context to what elicited whatever comments I make, so I’ll be making an effort to giving a little more background to each comment.

(Also, I’m awaiting for some people to show up for the party, so I’ve got the game paused. I’ll catch up live as soon as I can, so this is, quite literally, a semi-live game update)

First Quarter
On 1st-and-10 Pryor rolls out to the left and throws an interception, returned to the 12. Blech.

Laurinaitis just knocked the stuffing out of Sheridan on 3rd-and-15 and then KC Lopato missed a chippy. LOL

Okay, right now the OSU offense is stuck in neutral but the turnover off the punt needs to be the little jolt that kicks it in gear. Let’s go, Pryor.

One word to describe Ohio State’s effort thus-far: Uninspiring.

Until Beanie Wells, ONCE AGAIN takes this team on his shoulders and takes care of business. He even gave a Michigan defender a mini SAoJ after the play.

Second Quarter
Pryor seems to have settled down, as he just hit Hartline, in stride, for a beautiful touchdown on 1st-and-10. That was the kind of play that was just waiting to happen. The beatdown is on.

Third Quarter
There’s not much to say right now, but Michigan has run 5 straight running plays, and they’re moving the ball rather easily. We need some big stops and big hits on defense right now.

Now we need a sustained drive from the offense. Or rip off 40 yards with Beanie. Or or gash them for 50 with Daniel “Boom Goes the Dynamite” Herron. That was nice.

Good to see that a) Ray Small is back on the field (I know he’s been fielding punts all day) and b) he’s playing well. That eighty yard punt return was smooth.

Fourth Quarter
**MotSaG Standing Ovation** for Todd Boeckman!!

Week #12 Open Thread and OSU/Illinois Semi-live update

Ohio State 30 vs. Illinois 20

Herbstreit predicts a close one, Corso says two touchdowns. I see a revenge ripping. Let’s go Bucks.

First Quarter
FUMBLE!$@#!!

That’s how you make them pay for turnovers. Very nice play call on the goal line. Terrelle Pryor can fake with the best of them.

Look, this team is going to gain yards. Illinois has a good offense. It’s not fun to see our defense get gashed for yards like that. But the D usually gets stingy in the red-zone. It’s early.

Pryor is getting decent time in the pocket and the line is blocking well (if not good) but Illinois has made a couple decent plays on defense. Wells made a good play on the ball on third down.

That’s another wonderful sight — tough three-and-out and then a special-teams killer.

Second Quarter
“You can’t hit Beanie Wells high. He’ll just take you for a ride.”

What was that knock on Juice? Prone to turn-overs? Check.

And with that, the revenge whipping is in full force. Beanie and Pryor are a nasty one-two. Throw in receivers that are actually running routes and catching passes. It’s just a few weeks late.

Can we please get a flag on these blatant holds on our linemen? It’s egregious.

Halftime

We’re going to be on a bit of a time delay while we catch up with the DVR. We took a long lunch here at casa MotSaG

Third Quarter

HOLY BEANIE!!! I just saw him jump (not hurdle, jump) over #4 on Illinois. That was disgusting.

Okay, all caught up now. The third quarter was exciting, even without any scores. Beanie looks solid and Homan and Laurinaitis’ sacks were devastating. The OSU defense is definitely tightening the screws down.

Fourth Quarter
The play for the TD is under review at the moment, looks very close, but lets all praise Beanie and Pryor, combining for 200 yards on the ground.

Good Lord, Zebra peoples. That was a phantom fumble and an even phantomer face mask. This game just entered the Twilight Zone.

LSU 10 vs. Troy 31

Saw this score a little bit ago, at the half. That’s just pathetic. Any SEC “domination” real or otherwise should be officially laid to rest tonight, whether LSU wins or loses this game.

It could always be worse…

While I don’t necessary agree with this line of thinking (it can always be worse), Doug Lesmerises puts our “disappointing season” in perspective, looking at how it could be worse.

I know Doug is looking at this season and the disappointing teams ranked high in the preseason, but there is one event that happened earlier this year that could have made things infinitely worse for Ohio State fans:

Nightmare Fuel

Terrelle Pryor could have chosen Michigan.

Stiff Arm of the Week

Ain’t no party like a Stiff Arm Party.

Week #11 Open Thread and Semi-live Game Update

Ohio State: 45 vs. Northwestern: 10

First Quarter
Looks like the offensive line picked up where it left off two weeks ago. But then again, who needs a running game when Pryor is throwing like he is? Six running play and negative yards is not the way we wanted to see this game start, but hopefully the success of the passing game will loosen up the defense.

Ohio State’s Offensive Line: Making bad defenses look good since 2007.

Second Quarter
Beanie Wells has had enough of this crummy run blocking and he will JUST DO IT HIMSELF.

Watch out, Northwestern, you’re about to get MSU’ed.

Andre Ware is the Bill Walton of ESPN College football commentating. “He’s the greatest short yard back in college football.” “He’s got the best hands in the country.” “I could taste colors. I could feel sounds.”

Boone just encapsulated the entire lack of any senior leadership on this offense.

Half-time

Third Quarter
These referees need to keep their flags in their pockets.

Terrelle Pryor is having his way with Northwestern’s defense. Breaking tackles, converting on third-and-long, throwing with accuracy on the run. This is the consistency we’ve been waiting and hoping for, with running and throwing the ball with positive, actual results.

Fourth Quarter
Even though some of Terrelle’s throws today have still been floaty, a lot of his passes (like his latest to Robiskie) have looked a lot tighter and accurate. The maturation of TP continues and it’s quite enjoyable to watch.

Was Tressel mad after that last score by Herron? Replay signs point to “YES”.

Someone needs to remind Andre Ware that he and his Houston Cougar teammates beat SMU 95-21 in 1989.

Illinois 17 vs. W. Michigan 23
Seriously, Illinois? This is TRBL.

Iowa 24 vs. Penn State 23
I hate to admit it, but I called Iowa for the upset three weeks ago. Ask monkey if you doubt me.

It happens a lot, but I still hate being right all the time. Thanks a lot, Penn State. Go Michigan State! Beat the pants off the Paterno Poopers!

Week #11: Northwestern University – Open Thread

The stretch run is upon us. Three more games, three chances to finally get it right. Will it happen this week? Will everything click, come together and finally give us all something to smile about? We can all hope so.

For the game particulars, including copious amounts of data, Buckeye Planet delivers. Most other OSU blogs get their previews up on Fridays, after this post has been set to go live, so make sure you check in at Eleven Warriors and Buckeye Commentary. For an alternate look at how Ohio State and Northwestern stack up, statistically speaking, Lake the Posts delivers. Hail to the Purple looks at the match-up as well.

Some other tidbits. Beanie Wells “practiced more last week than he had during any of the previous three weeks leading into games.”… Previously injured (and thought to be done for the season) J. B. Shugarts will be available to play tomorrow. Northwestern may play two QBs… Hartline will take over punt return duty for the suspended Small… Will the weather be a factor?

Ohio State needs to look good these last few games. All three look like they should be gimme games. Northwestern will probably offer the most resistance, as Illinois is going to suffer a gigantic “revenge” spanking and Michigan is TRBL.

Northwestern is hurting and Ohio State looks to be healthy and hungry coming off the bye week. Look for a big game from Beanie, especially if the weather is disagreeable to a passing game. The defense is a given at this point, with the defensive line finally playing cohesively and getting better as the season goes on. This may look close early on, but Ohio State should pull away with an easy win.

I’m interested to see what effect the Ray Small incident has on this team. I don’t have any inside information, so I don’t know what relationships are like between players, but an incident like this can have a ripple effect through the team. Was he a chronic slacker, constantly getting into trouble? Or was it just a kid being a kid. Either way, I hope this tightens up the discipline and brings the team closer together.

No contests or prizes this week, but we won’t let that stop us from having fun guessing the final outcome. Prediction time!

el Kaiser predicts:
OSU: 27
Northwestern: 9

Let Brady Play!!

We don’t talk Brownie football as much as I’d like around here, but I was floored to hear that Brady Quinn will be taking over the role of starting QB for the Cleveland Browns.

I stand with the majority of Browns fans who honestly gave Anderson the benefit of the doubt after a slow start, but the pick-six he threw yesterday was the proverbial straw. I have nothing against Anderson, he seems like a solid guy, but I am excited to see what Brady can do. I just wonder if this is the right move. We’ll find out soon enough.

I, for one, welcome our new Brady Quinn Overlords.
