The Urban Dictionary: 10/21

TheUrbanDictionaryLogoAnother week, another win for Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes in black. But the quarterback dilemma continues to rage on.

Before getting into the third page of the dictionary, I would like to relay a message to those fans who chanted “JT, JT, JT” at the game this past weekend – What do you think that does to Cardale’s confidence and psyche? Barrett played well, but it’s not like he threw the ball for 500 yards like a gunslinger. Everybody thought Jones was the guy after Virginia Tech and Maryland. Personally, Cardale is still my starter. 10-0 as a starter as a matter of fact. Also, the guy won Buckeye Nation a national championship, the first since the Craig Krenzel era…show respect where respect is due. It’s fine to think and want JT to start; he played well, but one half of football does not justify a depth chart change, IMO.

But let’s ask Urban what he thinks about it. After all, he is the head coach.

Urban said – “I just read we’re 6-for-6 in the red zone again, so that’s 12-for-12 the last 12 times we’ve been in there. First of all, it’s a lot of times in there, which is good. The second thing is just let me evaluate it, let you guys know on Monday, and go from there.”

  • The Fans – The fans said all they had to say during the game. “JT, JT, JT!!!”
  • The Media – How could you possibly not know by now that JT is the man for the job?
  • The Players – Doesn’t matter who the quarterback is. Just look at those red zone stats.

As I said above, I’m still rolling with #TeamCardale, but I can see the case people are making.

Meanwhile just before kickoff in the blackened Horseshoe, the team up north just lost a heart-breaker to little brother, Michigan State.

Urban said – “I heard about it. I saw there was a fumbled punt or something like that as time ran out. This league is tough. The East Division, Big Ten, lot of respect for those teams.”

  • The Fans

  • The Media – Are you saying that the Big Ten is better than the SEC? Anarchy! Call the police! Call the mayor! Alert the media! Oh wait…we are the media.
  • The Players – Hahaha, Michigan suuuuuucks.

The Big Ten is for sure a lot better than it is given credit for by ESPN/the SEC Network.

When it boils down to picking a quarterback, Meyer hasn’t named one officially yet for the game at Rutgers, but…

Urban said – “I see the same thing that you see.”

  • The Fans – Thank goodness our coach finally listened to us chanting for JT! #TeamBarrett FTW!
  • The Media – We see that you still haven’t stuck with the same guy…why is that? It’s not like it could be because we keep on asking you each and every week is it?
  • The Players – We’re seeing 7-0 and a chance to go 8-0.

Whether you are on Team Barrett or Team Cardale, for the sake of my sanity and the sanity of both players, keep your opinions about it civil and respectful without belittling the other guy.

A Look Around The Country

Welcome back to my weekly column, A Look Around the Country. I’m highlighting notable games from the previous week, the week ahead and of course, the Heisman and Playoff race. Special features include an in-depth look at the Ohio State and a Michigan update, mainly for folks to bask in their misfortunes. Feel free to comment with your opinions, I hope you enjoy!

Notable Games Last Week

Stanford 56, UCLA 35

The Trees were able to stretch their record to 5-1 after a big win over UCLA. Many people are starting to say that Stanford’s loss to Northwestern back in week one is comparable to Ohio State’s loss to Virginia Tech last season. We’ll see if Stanford is able to contend with Utah.

Iowa 40, Northwestern 10

In a very quiet manner, the Hawkeyes have managed to go undefeated thus far this season and are the clear frontrunners to play in the Big Ten Championship Game. It’s odd to think about, but Iowa is a playoff contender. For Northwestern, they seem to be falling into a rut yet again.

Alabama 41, Texas A&M 23

Kyle Field wasn’t enough for the Aggies to hold off the Tide as Derrick Henry was able to run wild for 236 yards and 2 touchdowns. Alabama just keeps on winning and has put themselves on a collision course with LSU.

Michigan State 27, Michigan 23

HOLY S—!!!! In what will go down as one of the craziest finishes in college football history, the Wolverines laid an egg the size of Mars on the last play of the game. Moving forward, the Big Ten East all comes down the Buckeye-Spartan game in late November. For Michigan, the wins should keep coming and the Ohio State game will be one for the ages.

Big Games This Week

There aren’t any big games this week. For example, College Gameday is headed to the James Madison vs Richmond game.

Ohio State at Rutgers

After looking very impressive against Penn State in Ohio Stadium’s first blackout, J.T. Barrett has been the named the starter for the Rutgers game. In my opinion, this has been the right move since day one and I think the Buckeyes will continue to improve moving forward. Zeke is playing like a madman and the defense has really stepped up. Come November 21, they’ll be ready for when Sparty comes to town.

Men of the scarlet and Gray Podcast National Champions to Invade Birthplace of College Football

Chip Minnich and I got together with Sal and Jerry of Rutgers fame to join us and discuss the Scarlet Knights. We discuss the football team, head coach situation, black eye Rutgers has had since joining the Big Ten, and advantage of actually having them in the conference (cha-ching).

Sal was able to have time and have some fun with us on our MotSaG pick ’em segment. Always nice to kind of poke fun at your rivals no matter who they are.

Chip and I unfortunately, ran short on time, rushed through the Dark Knight review and answered some questions from our loyal listeners.

Since your a college football fan and Big Ten football fan you’ll probably want to follow Jerry @RUFANJERRY and Sal @salsoothsayer. You can catch Jerrys podcast here and Sal’s site here.

B1G Weekly Recap: Iowa Stays Unbeaten, SPARTY YES

A pair of Top 25 matchups highlighted the schedule of games for the Big Ten this weekend. Iowa easily took care of Northwestern at Ryan Field despite losing starting running back Jordan Canzeri early in the matchup and Michigan State, well, you already know what Michigan State did in Ann Arbor.

Iowa 40, Northwestern 10

Jordan Canzeri went down early in this one with a high ankle sprain that should keep him out 4-6 weeks but the Hawkeye offense didn’t miss a beat when Akrum Wadley stepped up in his place. Wadley carried the ball 26 times on the day for 204 and he tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns.

Clayton Thorson showed flashes of his potential for Northwestern, but for the second straight week, the freshman was unable to lead his team to victory. Iowa gets the week off after improving to 7-0 and Northwestern faces a must-win game when they head on the road to take on Nebraska.

Wisconsin 24, Purdue 7

Wisconsin added another notch in the win column when the Boilermakers came to Madison, this time doing so with less dramatics than the previous week. Despite leading by just three points at halftime, it never really seemed like Purdue was going to win this game. The Boilermakers had just 191 yards of total offense and David Blough scored their only touchdown on a QB keep from two yards out.

Joel Stave threw for 322 yards on 30-39 passing and Alec Ingold and Dare Ogunbowale combined to find the end zone three times on the ground for the Badgers. Purdue will take some time to think about what they’ve done during their bye while Wisconsin looks to keep the good times rolling in Champaign against the Illini.

Nebraska 48, Minnesota 25

To have any chance at reaching the B1G Championship Game, Nebraska could not let Minnesota pull off the upset in Lincoln. Both teams now sit at 1-2 in conference play, still poised to make a run should Iowa slip up down the stretch. Mitch Leidner threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown in a losing effort for the Gophers.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. had a solid day throwing the ball, completing 18-26 for 261 yards and three TDs while Terrell Newby provided a nice complement on the ground, racking up 116 yards on 13 carries and two scores of his own. Minnesota will be off to rest up for the remainder of the season and Nebraska stays at home to play Northwestern.

Michigan State 27, Michigan 23

Schadenfreude levels might have hit an all-time high in Ohio around 7:20 p.m. on Saturday. The foregone conclusion that was to be a Wolverine victory slipped through their fingers as quickly as a Blake O’Neill punt. Not much else will be remembered from this game other than Jalen Watts-Jackson scooping up a loose ball and scampering 38 yards for the touchdown.

Michigan State actually outgained the Wolverines by over 150 yards and if you look at just the box score, you would never have guessed that a miracle would be needed to win the game. The Wolverines get some time to think about that play since they’re off this week while Michigan State heads back to Spartan Stadium to face off against Indiana.

Rutgers 55, Indiana 52

It took an incredible 4th quarter comeback capped off by a Kyle Federico field goal as time expired, but Rutgers got in the win column in Big Ten play for the first time this season. The Scarlet Knights trailed 52-27 late in the 3rd quarter before scoring 28 unanswered points to stun the Hoosiers in Bloomington.

Nate Sudfeld threw for 464 yards and four touchdowns but it wasn’t enough to beat Leonte Carroo and his 157 receiving yards and three scores. Rutgers head back home to Piscataway to host the Buckeyes while Indiana will try to spring the upset on Michigan State in East Lansing.

Ohio State 38, Penn State 10

It took about a quarter for the Buckeyes to get going, but once they did, they finally started to look like the number one team in the country. Trailing 3-0 after the first quarter of play, Ohio State went to the ground game to get rolling, scoring three rushing touchdowns in the 2nd quarter, two by J.T. Barrett sandwiching a 10 yard score by Ezekiel Elliott.

Barrett threw touchdown passes to Braxton Miller and Michael Thomas in the second half to close out the Dark Night victory. Saquon Barkley was the star for the Nittany Lions, churning out 196 yards on the ground in defeat. Penn State heads back to Happy Valley this week to take on a struggling Maryland team and Ohio State is back in primetime once again when they take on Rutgers.

What was your biggest takeaway from this crazy weekend of B1G football? Still giggling about the ending up in Ann Arbor?

Urban Meyer Has Successfully Scripted the Buckeyes’ Entire 2015 Football Season

Urban Meyer, armed with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Cincinnati, is more of a forward-thinking strategist than any college football follower could have imagined. I always viewed him as one of a select few coaches in America capable of guiding a team with the gaudy expectations of the 2015 Ohio State Buckeyes. But that thought can be taken the next level now. After seven games, it is readily apparent that the season is unfolding as if Meyer had created it in a laboratory.

I touched on all the crazy expectations of the Ohio State football program in a previous article, and needless to say, it has proven difficult for the team to live up to all of them. For a team that made history by being unanimously voted as the No. 1 team in the country in the preseason, the Buckeyes’ performance thus far has seen those first-place votes steadily drift away to the likes of Baylor, Utah, TCU, LSU and Clemson. What was expected to be a weekly fireworks show of an offense has instead been somewhat of a  clunker, as the the team has struggled to impose its will on clearly inferior competition and only 2-5 against the spread this season, following its 28-point win over Penn State.

But just think – this whole thing was planned by Ohio State’s head football coach, himself. Meyer – a three-time national champion coach – has been there before. He’s attempted unsuccessfully to win back-to-back titles on two separate occasions. He knows the trials and tribulations that take a toll on players and coaches as they strive to sustain win streaks, appeal to voters by accumulating “style points”, and the complacency that can set in when a talented team begins to view winning as “another day at the office,” in stead of savoring the sweet taste of each victory.

With those challenges in mind – and knowing that Buckeyes program thrives in an underdog role – it is clear that Meyer made it his mission to self-inflict as much adversity into the team as possible. Building upon all the off-season discussion on quarterback battle – which seemingly placed OSU in the most fortunate position in college football history – Meyer opted to shake things up. By implementing a game plan that resulted in Ohio State’s offense sputtering inconsistently, instead of flourishing like a fine-oiled machine, he helped paint a national perception of doubt. Especially during a time that arch rival Michigan has been bursting back onto the national scene much faster than anticipated under Jim Harbaugh, Meyer manufactured a sense of mockery, an ability for this “unstoppable force” to be on the receiving end of snide remarks by analysts and rival fans.

Meyer knows that it is incredibly difficult for a championship-winning team that returns that much talent, and carries that much expectations, to stay hungry for the duration of 15-game season. He also knows that any good team, in any sport, aims to peak later in the season instead of early in the season. Knowing that Ohio State is blessed with a position where they can win each game – no matter how ugly – and still advance to the playoffs, Meyer chose to play in such a way that the Buckeyes would peak in Weeks 11-15, not in Weeks 5-9. So instead of opening the season with our read option offense and risking potential injuries to J.T. Barrett, who was recovering from a fractured ankle, we created a storyline about our offense abandoning the read-option staple of our offense and played Cardale Jones instead. Masked under another storyline of J.T. “failing to beat out Jones for the starting role”, Meyer made analysts and fans believe that he had indeed changed his core offensive philosophy. This also created doubt and sparked his own competitive fire, as people suddenly began questioning his decision making skills and ego.

Now, as the Buckeyes enter the second half of the season and begin tuning up for the important stretch of games in November and beyond, the momentum is beginning to shift back into the positive direction. First, Barrett was able to “prove himself” as a red zone specialist. Then, he’s able to give Buckeye nation a taste of how successful and fluid the OSU offense can be with him in the backfield on a regular basis. After igniting an offense that had otherwise been stagnant, Barrett has reopened the quarterback discussion – all while Meyer and offensive coordinator Ed Warriner make it seem that just aren’t ready to name Barrett the starter.

It’s all been a masterfully brilliant way to navigate the Buckeyes through the first seven games of the season. Now, after all the doubt and criticism, look for Ohio State to suddenly hit second gear, en route to hitting full stride in time for consecutive showdowns with Michigan State and Michigan. From here on out, Ohio State will emphatically transform all those question marks into exclamation points. You can count on it – because Meyer has scripted it that way. Enjoy the fireworks show.

5 B1G Observations: Week 7

I’m going to try really hard this week to keep it together.  A good blog writer/contributor would keep his emotions on lock.  He wouldn’t go off about what happened in Ann Arbor on Saturday afternoon.  He wouldn’t bring up the 99.8% probability of victory that the Wolverines somehow blundered.  He wouldn’t try to define Schadenfreude with a series of video clips and blog comments illustrating Michigan’s demise.  A good sports blog writer would stay non-biased, cover his subject matter with a level mind, and leave the emotion to the readers.  So that’s what you’re going to get today folks.  Sorry if you came here looking for dirty laundry because this guy is keeping it clean!

#1: Syke!  BAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself.  I won’t let it happen again.  Promise.

#2: DOUBLE SYKE!   LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!

MGoBlog during Michigan’s last possession:

“Yes.  Paul Bunyan, welcome back.”

“3 yards to victory.”

“They’ll have 10 seconds.  No blocked punt.”

The doubt begins to creep in:

“Whatever we do here, let’s not Oregon State and snap the ball over the punter’s head please.”

“F–.  Please god do not do this to us.  Not here.  Not now.”

“Is punting dangerous?”  (My personal favorite)

It happens:

“HOLY F–”

“Jesus Christ.  I don’t believe what I just witnessed.”

“I’m I dreaming?”

“HOLY FGO;ASDFG ELASD’ ;W DVV”

“Well that’s a new one.”

“I’ve given up hope.”

“So that’s what it’s like to be a Notre Dame fan.  I always wondered.”

Okay, okay – I just had to get that out of my system.  That’s all though, I’m good now.

#3: TRIPLE SYKE!!!  ROLFMFAO #SCHADENFREUDE

Obviously I’m not a good blog writer.  Face it, this is just too good to ignore.  Also, steel in our spine?  Sack of potatoes?  This is the well-educated Michigan Man that we’re always told about?  And is it just me or does Harbaugh’s lower jaw extend farther and farther forward the angrier and more annoyed he gets?

#4: Larry Johnson is the boss

I rarely skipped a Skull Session while I was at Ohio State.  Thanks to Larry Johnson, if you were at the ‘Shoe and didn’t get to St. John Arena for pregame then you obviously missed out.  This guy knows how to get the #juice flowin’.

#5: The Buckeyes rise to the occasion

J.T. put on a show with four touchdowns accounted for in limited playing time.  The defense kept the screws tightened all night even after Joshua Perry went down with an injury.  The uniforms looked WAY better than I thought they would.  (Those Buckeye Leaves were seriously crispy).  The only ache in my heart is for Cardale Jones who pretty much cemented his role as a backup for the rest of the year.  Thanks a million for last season, Twelve Gauge.  It won’t soon be forgotten.

Ohio State vs. Penn State 2015 Highlights

My personal Top 5

There has been a lot of talk so far this year about the AP rankings and whether they are fair or not fair. The funny thing about all this talk is that the rankings really mean nothing. The only rankings that matter  are the playoff rankings that come out later in the season. So these rankings mean nothing. So this article means nothing…but let’s do it anyway.

1: Ohio State- This team is so confusing right now. They should be crushing every team they run into but every game they seem to struggle with pulling away. However, they stay number one because the only other team that has shown number one capabilities is Baylor, and the schedule they have played is weaker than Ohio States.

2: Baylor- This team has been absolutely dominant this year. Led by Corey Coleman and Seth Russell, the offense has averaged almost 64 points per game, which is just ridiculous. The only reason they are not number one is the teams they have faced. The have some games coming up against Oklahoma and TCU which will decide whether they are the best team in the league or not

3: Utah- This is the surprise team to me. I knew they would be good coming into the year, but I had no idea how good they would be. They have one of the best players in the league, one of the best defenses, and overall one of the best teams. If they keep playing like they have been, they will easily be a playoff team and title contender,

4: LSU- I picked LSU to win the SEC before the season started, and they are making that prediction look very good. They have had a great year that is largely in part to Leonard Fournette, who is right now the best player in the league. As long as Brandon Harris plays well enough to make this a 2 dimensional team, they will be truly a scary team to play

5: TCU- TCU and Michigan State have run into the same issue; they keep winning, but keep falling down the polls. TCU has won and are still undefeated, but they have struggled in doing so, mainly on the defensive side. They have some tough tests coming up, so we will see if this is just a phase or if they actually are overrated.

Close but not quite

Ohio State VS Penn State: Dark Night at The Shoe Preview/Recap

Ohio State VS Penn State Preview:

There is always one game that is like no other.  This week the Buckeyes will face a Nittany Lions team that has won 5 straight games after dropping their season opener to Temple this season.  The loss was unexpected but like Ohio State last season, the Virginia Tech loss helped turn the tide.  While history has shown that the this game can never be taken for granted or overlooked, the Buckeyes look to add to their current three game win streak and to their all-time 16-13 record over Penn State.  Although, Ohio State has struggled, the defense stood strong and forced the necessary turnovers to keep the outcome in the Buckeyes favor.

This will always be a tough game no matter what the venue is.  It is more difficult at Happy Valley where the White Out lives and thrives.  This season will be special and the Buckeye heads and big wigs have finally answered the Buckeye Nations cries to have all black Buckeye gear.  This season and hopefully for more seasons to come, the Buckeyes will don the all black gear at The Shoe against the pesky Nittany Lions.  The Buckeyes will enter the game coming off of a dominant performance against the Maryland Terrapins.  The Buckeyes came out of the gates a bit slow, but after halftime they pulled away for good.  The Nittany Lions are coming off a near shutout of the Hoosiers, who the Buckeyes had their struggles with.  Can the Buckeyes stop the bleeding?  Will they step up?  Will they burst out of their funk?  Can they exceed the expectations?

The Dark Night at The Shoe will be electric and the atmosphere will be breathtaking.  While there are Ohio State traditionalists that have voiced their concerns about becoming more like “Oregon” with their abundance of jersey combinations, AD Gene Smith explained it perfectly and fanned the flames by proclaiming that yes we have this new jersey, but it will only occur once a year, at a designated game, once per season.  That isn’t that bad of an idea seeing how the kids being recruited in this day and age tend to be more materialistic.  Most kids now like the flash and tend to relate football teams to their fashion needs.  This isn’t a thing, but I get the one’s that say that we are straying away from the tradition.  I get it, but you all need to relax, if it takes that little nudge to garner the attention of the right recruits, I am all for it.

What To Expect:

Like I said earlier, this won’t be another “easy” game.  This is not THE GAME, but it is a distant third.  This is no slight to them, it is just a matter of precedence seeing that we have two other foes that are from a different State.  As long as I have been a fan, Penn State is the one team that I am always uneasy about outside of TTUN and the Spartans come to play.  This will be another tough and hard hitting game.  I look for Ohio State to win another close one at home.

Know Your Enemy:

The Nittany Lions have incumbent starter, Christian Hackenberg who has been the starter for the last two seasons.  Hackenbrg has 1086 passing yards and has 7 touchdowns against 2 interceptions.  Hackenberg has been flawless when taking the helm and I look for him to exploit the Buckeyes lack of contain for the QB and the RB.

Speaking of RB’s, the Nittany Lions have a Freshman who is averaging 8.9 yards per carry, which will help their offense move the chains.  The Nittany Lions are utilizing a variety of Running Backs and no matter who they have in the backfield, their Offensive Linemen need to step up in a big way.

On the outside, the Nittany Lions have a ton of former Buckeye targets in Chris Godwin and Saeed Blacknall.  I was hoping that they would flip but they stuck with their commitment.  They will go up against Eli Apple and Gareon Conley throughout the duration of the game which is no easy task.

How The Buckeyes Will Win:

Although the Nittany Lions are a formidable opponent, they cannot mask their inability to protect Hackenberg long enough to allow him to see the whole field.  Hackenberg has been playing and attempting to avoid sacks and that is definitely not going in their favor.  In this current season the Penn State O-Line has allowed a whopping 19 sacks so far.  Hackenberg has to constantly get back up off the turf again and again and in just 6 games that is a pretty mind blowing statistic.  This is how the Buckeyes will get the win.  With the new “Rush Men” package on defense, the O-Line will have fits trying to protect a potentially helpless Hackenberg.  Pair that with the fact that the Buckeyes have two formidable Cornerbacks in Eli Apple and Gareon Conley and two top-tier safeties in Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell, it will make it a difficult task for Hackenberg to sustain drives and it will prevent them from gaining momentum in the long run.  That isn’t the only problem that he faces.  He also faces a lot of talent up front beyond the stellar defensive line.  With Raekwon McMillan, Joshua Perry and Darron Lee patrolling between the D-Line and the DB’s, they can and will wreak havoc on Penn State.

On offense, I feel like Penn State will get a huge helping of Zeke.  They will find a way to feed this beast and put points on the board.  King Dolo Dale will also sling the ball a ton.  The Penn State defense, like always will be up for the challenge of trying to stop  Michael Thomas, Jalin Marshall and Braxton Miller.  The Penn State defense has only managed to snag 4 total interceptions this season, but I can see them coming away with a few.  The Penn State defense will continue to get to the quarterback, but I can see Coach Johnson stashing a few new packages to fluster the Penn State offense.

All in all, the Buckeyes will win this game in the second half to continue the trend of this season.  They will feel out the offense in the first half and then turn the heat on during the second half.  If everything falls into place and if the Buckeyes play to the level of their opponent they will win with a final score of 35-21.  If they play to their full potential and if they respond to the criticism, the defense and offense will both put points on the board and they will get ALL THE SACKS!  They will win it easily with a final score of 41-17.  You never know in College Football.

Recruiting Tidbits:

There is a lot of chatter about the Ohio State Running Back class and yes while it is the icing on the cake, it will work out with or without Kareem Walker and George Hill.  I think that we will be just fine.  Yes we may potentially lose them to our hated rivals in TSUN, but with the upcoming game, the Buckeyes will host a ton of talent from around the nation to fill one or both of their spots.  It is really a win win for the Buckeyes.  This weekend will be really eventful for Ohio State and with a statement win on the Dark Night at The Shoe, I can see the potential for multiple commitments.  There are way too many recruits to mention, but they will all be talented individuals.  Couple that with the addition of committed recruits from the 2016 and 2017 classes, I see no drop off in the class rankings.  Do not jump ship just yet.  Just let it ride and wait it out because the next couple of classes will most certainly be special and it will help Ohio State for many years to come.  For now let us focus on the current task at hand and let’s hope that the Buckeyes take care of business and dominate.  Go Bucks!!!

The Recap:

As expected the Buckeyes and Urban Meyer used the first quarter and a half to feel out their opponent.  The Buckeyes then trounced Penn State and turned up the heat during the second half of the game.  The Buckeyes won by four scores, 38-10.  The high point for Penn State was the fact that their frosh Running Back shredded the Buckeyes vaunted defense for nearly 200 rushing yards, which the Buckeyes haven’t allowed in what feels like forever.  This week the Buckeyes did not allow an opposing Quarterback to run all over them, which I am relieved about.  The Buckeyes sacked the hapless Hackenburg numerous times and Tommy Schutt had the biggest one on 4th and short to all but seal the game and to keep the momentum.  The Buckeyes also utilized J.T. Barrett and he had an amazing day with 4 total touchowns, 2 in the air and 2 on the ground.  Although Cardale Jones was benched after struggling once more, he will look to remain the starter.  Zeke was his normal self again with 150+ rushing yards and a touchdown.  Now on to the next one at Rutgers.  Nice team win.  Go Bucks!!!
