Three Preseason Storylines: Defensive Line

The battle is won and lost in the trenches. Case in point we rewind back to the year 2007. Urban Meyer and his Florida Gators defensive line tore through the Buckeyes like they were stuck in cement. We remember the outcome so lets fast forward to 2014 and the Urban Meyer Buckeyes. Six and a half years later and Urban has a defensive line that is as talented as that team that broke our hearts. Lets look at the three storylines..

1. Depth New defensive line coach Larry Johnson says “You like to play eight to nine guys, who feel can go in and contribute in the course of a game.”

Depth is something that the Buckeyes have even with suspensions to Noah Spence (2 games) and Tracy Sprinkle (1 Game). Senior stud Michael Bennett will lead the way with sophomore Joey Bosa, junior Adolphus Washington, senior Steve Miller as your probable starters. Rotating in junior Chris Carter, junior Tommy Schutt, senior Rashad Fraszier, freshmen Jaylin Holmes and Tyquan Lewis.

2.Match-ups Pick your poison on who you want to double team. Pick one and one of the other three will hurt you. This has the chance and capability to be the best defensive front in all of college football. These wrecking balls are going to create so much havoc and chaos for opposing offensive lines and quarterbacks its going to be a joy to watch this season.

Last season the Buckeye front line was ninth in the nation in rush defense only allowing 109.4 yards per game. The combination of Bosa, Spence, Bennett, and Washington had 24 sacks with Washington only having two of those something he needs to improve on.

3.Coaching Who would have thought that with the loss of Mike Vrable going to the NFL that the Buckeyes might actually get a better coach. That’s what Ohio State seems to do. Thanks to Penn State spurning Larry Johnson Sr for their head coaching job again Urban came in and made one heck of a hire. Many of the kids on the team already were familiar with Johnson and wanted to play for him at Penn State but chose to play for Meyer and now they have the best of both worlds.

This defensive line is going to be the start of the Silver Bullets returning to the Grid Iron on Saturdays and I for one am so excited to watch them play.

Which Teams Shockingly Missed My Pre-Season Top 10?

So we here at MotSaG have traditionally done our usual Top 25 poll every week and while those are fun to discuss and do, we have come to the conclusion that really no one cares about teams 11-25. If they are good enough they will move in the Top 10 eventually and if they aren’t they didn’t deserve the time we put into them anyhow.

How did I come up with my Top 10 you might be asking? Well I based it on how teams finished last year first and foremost. I then considered returning players and ease of schedule. I tried to not just blindly put in the usual teams unless they truly deserved it. Name alone wont get you on my list. I did not consider hypothetical situations of who could beat who and all that. Not that those aren’t valid ways of doing this it is just that it makes it way to difficult and these should not be difficult to do. So lets get to it shall we.

Top 10

1.) Florida State- This is a no brainer they won the NC and bring back a ton of talent and have an easy schedule with only 2 ranked teams #16 Clemson and #17 Notre Dame both of which are home games.

2.) Oklahoma- Oklahoma finished the season by absolutely destroying Alabama who was a freak play away from going to the NCG. They return a lot of players and have an easy schedule as well with 2 ranked opponents #10 Baylor and #20 Kansas State both of which are at home.

3.) Michigan State- MSU would have surely been in the playoff last year if their was one. They may have even won the whole thing. They have a tougher schedule having to play #3 Oregon, #5 OSU, and #22 Nebraska with only 2 of the 3 at home. They may have been #2 if not for losing some great players from last years team.

4.) Oregon- Oregon is coming off an 11-2 season with a bowl dominating win over Texas. They return most of that team. They host #8 MSU, #11 Stanford, #25 Washington, and on the road @ #7 UCLA. So their schedule as you can see is brutal. If they win 3 of 4 they are probably in the 4 team playoff.

5.) UCLA- UCLA is coming off a season where they won some great games and lost some bad ones. They have the talent and coaching to prosper. Their schedule is brutal though hosting #3 Oregon, #11 Stanford, #15 USC, and on the road against #19 Arizona St, and #25 Washington. Thats a gauntlet.

6.) South Carolina- They won 11 games last season including a bowl win over Wisconsin. They return a lot of players. They have a brutal schedule as well. Hosting #12 Georgia, #21 Texas A&M, #24 Mizzou, and on the road against #6 Auburn and #16 Clemson.

7.) Baylor- Yes Baylor lost to UCF. But they return a lot of talented players and have an easy schedule. They play @ #4 Oklahoma and host #20 Kansas State. If they can beat OU in Norman they have a great shot to go undefeated.

8.) Stanford- Stanford managed to win the PAC 12 and barely lost to a dominant MSU team in the Rose Bowl. They have a system that works extremely well in the PAC 12 against teams not use to 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense and attacking defense. Stanford’s schedule is INSANE… Hosting #15 USC. Away games @ #3 Oregon, #7 UCLA, #17 Notre Dame, #19 ASU, and #25 Washington. Not much chance for them to go unscathed.

9.) Auburn- Auburn was a couple of plays away from being a 4 or 5 loss team or the National Champs last year. They return nearly everyone and have the talent to win it all. Their schedule is brutal though. Home games against #9 South Carolina, #13 LSU, #21 Texas A&M, and away games at #2 Bama, #12 Georgia, #18 Ole Miss, and #20 Kansas State.

10.) Southern Cal- Coming off a 10 win season and a bowl win. USC has a plethora of 4 and 5 star players and the momentum to sneak up and win the PAC 12. A tough schedule will prepare them or could derail them we shall see. Home games against #17 ND and #19 ASU. Away games at #7 UCLA and #11 Stanford. Not to bad of a schedule considering some of the others in the PAC 12.

Just missed the cut

This was hard to do but I didn’t put Ohio State or Alabama in this weeks polls for the same reasons. They both lost their last 2 games last season. They both lost their starting All-Everything QBs. They both lost a lot of talent to the NFL draft.

They also though have the same positives in easy schedule and lots of talent on the team still. I imagine it won’t take long for both of these teams to move up into the top 10.

Urban Meyer

Urban Meyer Press Conference Navy Week

Here we go folks the Buckeyes first game is right around the corner and today Urban Meyer discussed somethings in his press conference about Saturday’s game.

Here’s some quick notes and the link to the video after the notes courtesy of Buckeye Vision.

Braxton Miller met with Dr. Andrews today and scheduled to have his shoulder surgery done tomorrow and he will not be traveling with the team to the Navy game.

JT and Cardale have both responded well, both have been splitting reps all spring and training camp so they weren’t thrust into the position of being the possible starter. JT will be the starter if he does have some difficulties Urban says he can putting Cardale in. JT is Guiton-ish, business like.

Team Captains: Braxton Miller even though he is out for the season he was the highest vote-getter, Jeff Heuerman, Michael Bennett, Doran Grant, and Curtis Grant.
(side note) Congratulations to them.

Jeff Heuerman not at 100 percent but anticipates hes ready to go, Nick Vannet (TE) is another of the most improved group outstanding camp.

Left Guard position is still a battle not because of ability but no one has separated themselves. In that group is Billy Price, Joel Hale, and Antonio Underwood.

Center is between Jacoby Boren and Alabama transfer Chad Linsey

Second cornerback position opposite Doran Grant is Eli Apple and Gareon Conley, both will play.

Ezekiel Elliot is full go, Rod Smith and Bri’onte Dunn have had great camps. Warren Ball has a slight concussion. Elliot, Dunn, Smith, and Curtis Samuel all involved in kicking game and you can’t carry the ball if your not part of the kicking game.

Meyer was ask how ready are the Buckeyes.

His response “Pretty ready”

Three Preseason Storylines: Running Backs

Throughout the rich history of Ohio State football, running backs have always been a big part of the offense. Whether it was during Woody Hayes’ era of “three yards and a cloud of dust,” or Jim Tressel’s conservative “Tresselball,” or the present day no-huddle, spread offense of Urban Meyer, running backs have played a big part in the success of Buckeye football. Just look at all the Heisman trophy-winning running backs throughout the program, including the only two-time Heisman winner in the history of college football, Archie Griffin. So what’s the running back situation look like heading into 2014? Well for starters let’s address…

1. Filling the Void of Carlos Hyde – The graduation of Carlos Hyde from the program is a noticeable one. He was one of the constant playmakers for the Buckeyes all season long in 2013. Hyde rushed 208 times for 1,521 yards and 15 touchdowns, while averaging 7.3 yards per carry. He accomplished this despite being suspended three games at the beginning of the season. He’s basically irreplaceable. You don’t find running backs like Hyde everyday and it’s unfair to expect this year’s running backs to match this type of stellar production (they have the potential to match it). And this year’s group of running backs aren’t short on talent either. The running backs tasked with replacing Hyde are sophomore Ezekiel Elliott, redshirt-senior Rod Smith, redshirt-sophomore Bri’onte Dunn, redshirt-sophomore Warren Ball and true freshman Curtis Samuel. Who will standout as the #1 running back out of all them? It’ll most likely be Ezekiel Elliott. Speaking of Elliott…

2. Will Ezekiel Elliott Have a Breakout Season? – The most likely starter for the opening game against Navy at running back will be Ezekiel Elliot. He might not get as many reps in the opening game as you expect because he’s coming off a fractured left wrist surgery. But once the season gets going expect Elliott to shine the most among the running back stable. Buckeye fans got a taste of what Elliott had to offer last season during some blowout games. If you forget Elliott’s work, take a look at his 2013 highlight reel:

Granted these were against clearly inferior opponents and backup defenses, but you could see the potential in Elliott. He’s got the ideal “package” for your starting running back. Elliott is big and strong enough to truck defenders over, yet has breakaway speed and agility to outrun secondaries. With another offseason under strength and conditioning guru Mickey Marotti, I’m sure Elliott is even stronger and faster than last season. I have a feeling Big Ten defenses are going to get to know Elliott quite well this season and not in a good way (for them). In a couple of years he may even reach the same level as his predecessor. But I’m getting ahead of myself. As Urban Meyer would say, it’s all about “Navy. Navy. Beat Na-vy.”

3. The Loss of Braxton Miller Adds More Pressure to Running Backs – When it was announced Braxton Miller would out for the season with a shoulder injury, attention immediately turned to the expected replacement, redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett. The pressure is now on Barrett, but more importantly the running game. Many are expecting Meyer to employ a similar offense under Barrett as he did with Kenny Guiton last season, by throwing the ball off play action passing plays. In order to make this type of offense work successfully is a productive running game of course. As Barrett gets his feet wet and becomes comfortable in his new starting role, the running game will have to shoulder most of the burden on offense. And with the running game being relied on more often, that means at least “a pair and a spare” will be needed. Remember that term Jim Tressel famously coined? It was a great philosophy and is something Meyer will need this season, especially in the early games.

It will be interesting to see who’s ultimately #2 and #3 on the running back’s depth chart. True freshman Curtis Samuel has been praised plenty in the offseason by the coaching staff and will be getting look at in-game action immediately. The elder statesmen of the group, senior Rod Smith, will be one of the first Urban can turn to because of his experience and familiarity of the pressures of being a running back at Ohio State. Another running back to keep an eye on is the burly Bri’onte Dunn, who redshirted last season. Dunn is an ideal third down and short running back, along with being a good hand in a goal line situation. His power could also make him a good blocker out of the backfield. Long story, short the Buckeyes have plenty of options at running back. With the amount of competition at the position, I wouldn’t worry too much about losing Carlos Hyde because the next Hyde could easily emerge from this talented group.

Lawrence Cager Looking to Silence the Doubters

Lawrence Cager is a top Wide Receiver coming out of the 2015 class. He holds offers from top programs in the country such as Ohio State and Alabama. Lawrence is a top Ohio State target and the Buckeyes are hot on his recruiting radar. When asked about the recruiting process Lawrence said “Not satisfied. I feel like I’m still under recruited and I’m underrated by a lot of these recruiting websites so I still have stuff to prove.” Look for Lawrence to start receiving offers from more schools. Even though he feels underrated Cager said the recruiting process has been good. “A lot of top programs have been hitting me up now in Auburn, LSU and Michigan State.”

Cager was able to get to Ohio State for FNL where he received his Buckeye offer. When asked about his time Cager responded “Fun, when me and TG (Torrance Gibson) get together it’s always a fun time and Ohio State just felt like another home. The one thing that fascinated me is that I signed autographs, took pictures, and fans knew me there. I was shocked.” It is clear that he highly enjoyed his time at Ohio State. Cager wasn’t just taking pictures with fans the entire trip. He was also busy talking to the coaching staff. “I talked to the whole coaching staff and they said how I could become an elite wide receiver in the NFL and maybe become the next big thing.” Lawrence explained. Ohio State was his favorite school growing up and he was excited about getting an offer from them.

Lawrence is looking to to show how of an elite Wide Receiver he is this upcoming season. “We are making strides, returning players feeling more comfortable and more stable in the system. I’m expecting us to make it to the championship. My goal is to break the Calvert hall record of 99 balls caught.” said Lawrence. He plans on committing mid season on his bye week. Buckeye fans should be really excited about Cager. He is a great receiver who plays very physical. Lawrence closed up our conversation with an “O-H” to all Buckeye fans out there. I look forward to seeing what happens at the end of his recruiting process. will Lawrence receive a couple more offers from top programs and shift is interest? Or will Ohio State remain high on the radar? Time will tell!
