BIG 10 Week 1 Results

With Week 1 in the books, the College Football Season has gone underway and what a week it was! It also marks the beginning of the NFL Season for you pro football fans, but I will forever be more intrigued by what College Football has become. It is not a slight to the NFL, but the passion is something that will keep me coming back. The ferocity of rivalries, the pageantry and the intensity of the players and coaches cannot be beat. The fact that any school can beat another, even though they are highly ranked, it could happen. Home Field Advantage is also very real, but sometimes the home teams fall short. The competitiveness cannot be beat! It is second to none. And I haven’t even begun talking about the recruiting battles that wage on until National Signing Day. In my very humble opinion, it is the best thing on Earth!

During Week 1 we have already witnessed a few upsets. A lot of drama and anxiousness was laid to rest. A few teams romped the other and few have suffered and were dealt a big fat “L” on the opening weekend.  Let us review how well or how poorly the BIG 10 had fared during opening week.

Ohio State Buckeyes:

Naturally I would like to start with the defending National Champs.  Duh, I am a Buckeye fan after all!  Anyway, the Buckeyes invaded Blacksburg looking to open the season with a resounding win to start off the season with an emphatic win.  Coach Meyer and company did not disappoint either as the Buckeyes took care of business this week.  With each repetition that Braxton Miller has he will only become more involved in the offense.  You see the playmaking ability he had with the spin move that broke the internet and the nifty TD reception after beating the slot defender.  He will only get better.  The scary part about it is the Buckeyes did it without the stellar play of Joey Bosa on defense, the lightning quick return ability that both Jalin Marshall and Dontre’ Wilson bring to the team and without the experience or playmaking ability of Corey Smith.  The Buckeyes are completely loaded from top to bottom, on both offense and defense.  And with the addition of the four suspended players, they will be a force to be reckoned with for not only the home opener this weekend, but the entirety of the season.  The Buckeyes dominated The Hokies and put their demons to rest, but the season isn’t over yet.  Although I am still celebrating the revenge game this past Monday, I know we still have a long way until the end of the season.  With high expectations and a ton of pressure, the journey as The Defending Champions is a long ways away.  Needless to say, the Buckeyes got their first win of the season and they now will look toward the Hawaii matchup.  The Buckeyes are going to be a tough match-up for Hawaii and as much I support fellow Pacific Islanders (born and raised in Guam), it won’t end up well for the Rainbow Warriors.

Michigan State:

Michigan State opened the season against Western Michigan in Kalamazoo.  While it wasn’t all that pretty from the start, the Spartans pulled out of their funk and finished the game with a double-digit win.  The Spartans are normally known for their stingy defense, but Western Michigan was dead-set on shocking the world this weekend.  Luckily for the Spartans, they put a normally potent offense on ice.  Next week the Spartans will face the Oregon Ducks at East Lansing.  They will need to prepare for the high-octane offense that the Ducks utilize and it surely will not be easy due to the departure of their former Defensive Coordinator, Pat Narduzzi.  I will be rooting for you Michigan State, but I don’t like your chances.

Wisconsin:

The Badgers took on the Alabama Crimson Tide in a neutral field and the Tide showed the world that they aren’t done yet.  With a ton of former five Star recruits and a few highly rated four stars, the only big question mark was who would become their starting Quarterback?  Coker took the reins and guided the Tide to a victory.  It isn’t all bad for the Badger, they put up a fight in the beginning, but the tide just imposed their will and dominated them throughout the game.  The Badgers had a difficult time running through Alabama’s stout defense.  Hopefully they can pick it up next week against the Miami (OH) Redhawks at home so, they should rebound accordingly.

Michigan:

The Wolverines took a trip to Utah and they began the Harbaugh Era with an upset loss to the Utes.  Sure they were the better team on paper, but this is why I love the College Game so much, upsets happen.  A lot.  They were the victim of poor play at the Quarterback position they were almost destined to take this loss.  This week the Wolverines will host the Oregon State Beavers.  The Beavers lost their former head coach to Nebraska and I am interested to see how the new coaching staff at Oregon State runs their offense.  You never know until game time so this may be another close and thrilling game while Harbaugh fine tunes his offense for the eventual showdown with Ohio State.

Minnesota:

The Golden Gophers almost came back at home against TCU, logging a seven point loss to a potent TCU offense.  The Minnesota defense held the Horned Frogs to a pedestrian 24 points.  The defense did a very good job shutting down the TCU offense and they were at home.  When we barely escaped Minnesota with a win the critics were critical of our play, but now TCU struggles at Minnesota, where’s the backhanded comments?  Or are the Horned Frogs still salty about being left out of last years Playoffs?  Hangover?  I don’t think so, but now we all know that it isn’t easy with Coach Kill at the helm at Minnesota.  Next week the Golden Gophers will travel to Colorado State to take on the Rams.  I think the Gophers will beat them handily.

Northwestern:

Another upset!  I thought this would end up to be a blowout, but I was proven to be wrong.  Stanford had a difficult time getting their offense into a rhythm the entire game.  The Wildcats shocked the world with a less potent offense than what they are most know for while Siemian was their Quarterback, but they got it done.  The rushing attack is still very much effective and it helped tremendously.  Next week the Wildcats will host the Eastern Illinois Panthers, which should be a cakewalk after last weeks performance, but we will see.

Iowa:

The Hawkeyes faced Illinois State at home and notched a double-digit win against a FCS foe.  Both Iowa’s passing and rushing attack showed that they are a force to be reckoned with.  Recording 431 yards of total offense in the game.  The momentum will be needed for the their upcoming game against hated rival, Iowa State.  They will travel to Ames, Iowa which is always a tightly contested game for the Hawkeyes.  Let’s see if the Hawkeyes can ignore the hostile crowd and beat the Cyclones for the coveted Cy-Hawk Trophy.

Rutgers:

The Scarlet Knights trounced the visiting Norfolk State Spartans.  There is nothing else to it.  The offense essentially destroyed any and all hopes of leaving Piscataway with a win.  The offense clicked and the defense was dominant against a FCS school.  Next week they face the Washington State Cougars at home which will make for an interesting game.  With former Texas Tech Coach, Mike Leach it is almost guaranteed to become a shootout between PAC 12 and BIG 10 teams.  This is a game that I would watch due to the potential for offensive fireworks.  Another close one for the BIG 10.

Illinois:

Illinois has shown that they are benefiting from a coaching change.  Now the players are responding to coaching staff that was held over and they blew out the visiting Golden Flashes.  Kent State had no chance in Champagne.  The pain in Champagne.  We will see how the Illini progress during the season.  It is still a work in progress and we will just have to wait and see.  Next week the Fighting Illini face the visiting Western Illinois Leathernecks.  Yes, I know that it is indeed another FCS team, but it could be used to build the momentum up for Illinois.

Nebraska:

Are you starting to get the theme here?  Upset central.  Another BIG team goes down.  Needless to say that is the beauty of College Football.  Especially seeing how the Cornhuskers lost the game.  A Hail Mary for the win!  It doesn’t get any exciting as a fan than that.  We Buckeye fans have won a game recently with that very play (think Wisconsin).  But anyway, the Cornhuskers will have to adjust to a different offensive scheme with Coach Riley.  Riley ran a power running/spread type of offense and that is somewhat different from the spread that Bo Pelini used with Taylor Martinez and company.  BYU is no slouch either, they have a stout defense and a potent offense and unfortunately Nebraska ran into a buzzsaw in their home opener.  It is still early in the season and it isn’t like they lost to a scrub team.  But boy, when I was stationed in Nebraska, there was nothing like going to Lincoln to see the sea of sad, pouty faces!  They should rebound against a mediocre Southern Alabama team.  Here’s to taking it out on the little guy.

Maryland:

Maryland trashed the Richmond Spiders in College Park.  Sure the Spiders put 21 points on the board, the Terrapins dropped 50 on their heads.  The recruiting battles that Maryland has won over the years and being able to fend off Powers Conference schools such as Ohio State, Michigan State and Alabama will pay dividends for them.  I saw that they currently have a few of their top in-state recruits in the fold for last years and this years classes, which is good for them and the conference.  This week they will host the Bowling Green Falcons.  This should be another game to fine tune their offense before the conference schedule begins.  This should be ugly.

Penn State:

The battle for Pennsylvania didn’t have that much fireworks seeing how Temple beat Penn State by double-digits.  Sure the Nittany Lions were the away team, but they shouldn’t have been this sluggish because of the high praise Quarterback Christian Hackenburg was getting in the Pre-Season hype train.  I am sure that he will pick it up eventually and I am not really worried about them.  They are a rival after all.  Next week they will be at home against the Buffalo Bills.  The Bills have an anemic offense as of late and this should be a blowout in favor of the Nittany Lions.

Indiana:

The Hoosiers almost lost one in a tightly contested game in Bloomington.  They almost let down completely against a FCS team.  Southern Illinois almost stole one, but luckily for Indiana they stopped them.  This week Indiana is hoping to have a better game against FIU.  The Golden Panthers will travel to Bloomington and the Hoosiers will look to have a better showing for their home crowd.  This should be a walk in the park because I see no threats for the Hoosiers.

Purdue:

The Boilermakers just got steamrolled when they travelled to Marshall.  They lost to a crummy team who hasn’t been good for a while.  They’ve been decent but not spectacular.  This loss looks like it may impact former Ohio State assistant Darrell Hazel’s job security at Purdue.  He has had an ample amount of time to build a winning program, but at a school like Purdue, it was take a little while longer.  Next week they will face a Indiana State team that won their last game in FCS play.  Purdue should come out slinging the ball because they are at home.  I expect a blowout once again just because they are coming off of a crushing loss to Marshall.

BIG 10 Record After Week 1:  8-6

It isn’t as bad as last years first few weeks of play, but it should have been better a better opening week, but that is College Football and that is life for you.  Needless to say the BIG 10 is still a work in progress and they should show up just in time to become a more complete and competitive conference.  I predict that the BIG 10 will go 10-4 this week due to the abundance of FCS teams scheduled.  It could be 11-3, but lets see if the Spartans can take care of business.  Go Bucks!!!

B1G Weekly Recap: B1G Letdown on College Football’s Opening Weekend

It was an opening weekend to forget for most of the Big Ten as the conference went just 8-6 including two losses to non-Power 5 conference opponents. Penn State embarrassed themselves against Temple and Purdue fell late on the road to Marshall. Aside from Ohio State’s victory in Blacksburg, Northwestern was the most impressive in victory, upsetting No. 21 Stanford.

Utah 24, Michigan 17

Jim Harbaugh’s debut didn’t go as planned as Utah took advantage of their home field to win their third consecutive game against the Wolverines. Devontae Booker had 124 yards of total offense and a touchdown for the Utes. The Wolverines had their chances to win this game, but a Justin Thomas interception return for a touchdown halfway through the 4th quarter all but sealed the victory.

Jake Rudock threw for 279 yards and two scores, but was picked off three times in his first game as the Wolverines’ quarterback. Harbaugh returns to Ann Arbor for his first home game next week against Oregon State.

TCU 23, Minnesota 17

Minnesota stuck around against the No. 2 team in the country but just couldn’t find a way to overcome the talented Horned Frogs. Trevone Boykin showed flashes of what’s made him a Heisman Trophy contender as he threw for 246 yards and a TD as well as rushing the ball for 92 yards and another score.

Mitch Leidner was good, not great, for the Golden Gophers, going 19-35 for 197 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Rodney Smith led the way on the ground with 88 yards, doing his best to fill the big shoes left by David Cobb. Minnesota travels to play Colorado State on the road on Saturday.

Michigan State 37, Western Michigan 24

Buckeye fans probably had an eye on this matchup in Kalamazoo with two future opponents squaring off. The score made it look a little closer than it was, as the Spartans jumped out to a 27-10 halftime lead before faltering down the stretch. Zach Terrell had a big game for the Broncos, throwing the ball 50 times for 365 yards and two touchdowns.

For Michigan State, Connor Cook was very average, going just 15-31 passing for 256 yards and two scores. Madre London ran in two touchdowns in the early going for the Spartans as they got a tune-up before next week’s primetime showdown against Oregon in East Lansing.

Northwestern 16, Stanford 6

Northwestern pulled off one of the bigger shocks around the conference by taking out No. 21 Stanford. Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson made the biggest play of the day when he took off 42 yards down the left sideline in the 2nd quarter to give the Wildcats a lead they would never surrender. All other scoring plays were field goals as Northwestern held on to start the season 1-0.

The Wildcats will look to build off their early season success when they host Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

Iowa 31, Illinois State 14

In a game some pundits thought the Redbirds might give Iowa a run for their money, the Hawkeyes handled the 2014 FCS runner-ups easily, nearly doubling Illinois State’s yardage total (431-231). C.J. Beathard got his first career start at Kinnick Stadium and was impressive in the victory.

Beathard threw for 211 yards and a touchdown while adding two more scores on the ground as Iowa jumped out to a 31-0 lead before allowing a couple late touchdowns. It’s a rivalry week for the Hawkeyes as they prepare for a trip to Ames to take on Iowa State.

Maryland 50, Richmond 21

Maryland survived a bit of a scare early from Richmond when the Spiders took a 14-13 lead less than five minutes into the 2nd quarter. The Terrapins would put all fears at ease though and they reeled off 37 straight points after falling behind.

William Likely set a Big Ten record for punt return yards in a game with 233 in the season-opening win. Likely took one punt all the way back 67 yards for a touchdown that put the exclamation point on this one. Things get a little tougher next week for Maryland when they welcome Bowling Green to town.

Rutgers 63, Norfolk State 13

Rutgers was expected to dominate their MEAC foe and dominate they did. The Scarlet Knights outgained Norfolk State 539-196 and Leonte Carroo helped blow things open in the 3rd quarter when he caught three touchdown passes.

Mike Leach and the Washington State Cougars come to Piscataway for the return trip of a home-and-home series that Rutgers took the opener of last season.

Illinois 52, Kent State 3

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Illinois faithful so it had to feel good to put a beat down on hapless Kent State in the season opener. Wes Lunt threw four touchdowns and Josh Ferguson added another on the ground to lead the Illini in this game that was postponed Friday night due to lightning.

Illinois will look to keep the good times going when Western Illinois take a trip across the state to Champaign on Saturday.

Temple 27, Penn State 10

For a guy hyped to be a possible first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Christian Hackenberg has done a great job of seeming extremely average. Hackenberg was just 11-25 passing for a measly 103 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

Akeel Lynch scored the Nittany Lions’ only touchdown of the game in the first quarter to make it 10-0, Penn State. Hackenberg led the Nittany Lions to just 180 yards of total offense all game and will need to get a lot better if they want to turn things around against Buffalo this weekend.

BYU 33, Nebraska 28

Playing without Heisman candidate Taysom Hill down the stretch, BYU shocked the whole state of Nebraska by scoring the game-winning touchdown on a last-second Hail Mary. Backup Tanner Mangum found Mitch Mathews at the front of the end zone to complete the Cougars’ comeback.

Tommy Armstrong, Jr. played well for the Cornhuskers in the loss, throwing for 319 yards and three scores. Nebraska will look to get their first win of the season on Saturday when they take on South Alabama.

Indiana 48, Southern Illinois 47

Indiana escaped their season opener against the FCS Salukis by just a single point after a Southern Illinois two-point conversion failed with 18 seconds left in the game. The Salukis were up 32-21 at halftime but squandered their lead before the 3rd quarter was over.

Jordan Howard paved the way for the Hoosiers, rushing for 145 yards and three scores, including the game-winner with 58 seconds left. Indiana looks to start 2-0 when Florida International comes to Bloomington for a night game.

Alabama 35, Wisconsin 17

Wisconsin couldn’t stop Derrick Henry and the Crimson Tide rode their talented back all the way to a blowout win over the Badgers. Henry ran for 147 yards on just 13 carries but still managed to find paydirt three times. Jake Coker was efficient in his first start, going 15-21 for 213 yards and a touchdown pass.

Joel Stave was the more experienced signal caller in this matchup, but his 228 yards and two touchdowns weren’t enough to keep Wisconsin in this game. The Badgers will look to bounce back in Camp Randall against Miami (Ohio).

Marshall 41, Purdue 31

Purdue had plenty of chances to win their season opener on the road in Huntington, leading at halftime and after the 3rd quarter, but turnovers doomed the Boilermakers. Austin Appleby threw four interceptions, including two picked off by Tiquan Lang that were returned for touchdowns. Purdue was driving with less than two minutes in the game when Lang sealed the game for the Thundering Herd.

D.J. Knox ran for 102 yards in the loss and DeAngelo Yancey added 78 yards receiving for the Boilermakers. Purdue is back at home to take on Indiana State in their next matchup.

Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24

Cardale Jones got the start at quarterback. Ezekiel Elliott kicked off his Heisman campaign by taking a handoff 80 yards to the house on his first carry of the game. Braxton Miller looked like, well, Braxton Miller again as he showed off his XBraxOne type moves on his way to being the conference’s offensive player of the week in his first college game in 20 months.

Michael Thomas and J.T. Barrett also got in on the action, hooking up for a 26 yard touchdown pass where Thomas made All-American cornerback Kendall Fuller look like a JV backup. The Buckeyes return home to meet up with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.

What did you think of the conference’s opening weekend? B1G disappointment? Let us know in the comments below.

10 Unnecessary Overreactions to the Buckeye’s Week 1

By: Ryan Black

After a roller coaster first half, the Buckeyes strutted out of Blacksburg feeling more swagger than Rounda Rousey after knocking some chick into next Tuesday.

Ohio State started off with a haymaker and went up by 14 before the scrappy Hokies got up after a 9 count and took a 17-14 lead with some misdirection plays.

There’s nothing better than a hot take after one week. So instead of seeing how the rest of the Buckeyes schedule takes form, let’s get wild and make some unnecessary statements based off the first game.

Here are 10 Unnecessary Overreactions

  1. Virginia Tech is not a Top 25 Team

Hot take: I expected the talent level of both team’s starters to be closer than any other game on the schedule for Ohio State (save MSU) on Monday. Wasn’t really the case.

Tech had solid offensive and defensive lines but the safeties, linebackers, and skill position players were very generic.

  1. Cardale is the starter the rest of the season.

Hot take: I was on #TEAMJONES all offseason and happily resigned myself to JT getting the start.

Either way OSU was in great shape but Cardale can flick the ball downfield 50 yards in a split second and will probably earn himself a 1st round draft grade, something an OSU QB hasn’t seen in decades.

And Dale rushed for 100 yards against a top 5 defense, something he’s not getting enough credit for.

  1. Ohio State should not let other teams dictate their play calling.

Hot take: Urban mentioned in an interview but I don’t care how many guys are on the line of scrimmage,  Zeke Elliott needs more than 3 carries in a half.

He showed with an 80 yard burst that nobody can catch him from behind. I’m taking 2 or 3 negative plays for the high reward he brings.

  1. Virginia Tech’s first two touchdowns were well drawn up but flukish.

Hot take: I’m not too worried (yet) about the two tds the starters gave up on Monday. They were both fool me once type plays that should be easy to clean up…

Oh and those long developing plays will become a little harder against the Bucks this week…

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  1. Sam Hubbard is a future 1st round pick.

Hot take: Ahh, my personal favorite kind of overreaction. Every fanbase think their stud freshmen is a future first rounder.

But only Buckeye fans are right. #Burn

  1. Michael Thomas is the best all around Buckeye receiver since David Boston

Hot take: Uh oh, getting really hot in here now.

Jenkins, Holmes, Smith, Ginn, Gonzales, Sanzenbacher, Posey etc…

Thomas may not have the numbers of these guys (due to so much talent around him) but if these 7 created a love child it would be Thomas.

  1. Mike Weber needs to come back fast.

Hot take: Brionte Dunn and Warren Ball are not elite running backs.

If (god forbid) something does happen to Ezekiel Elliott, the Bucks could be in trouble.

Mike Weber or Curtis Samuel should immediately be moved to the starting role.

  1. Ohio State’s special teams is worrisome.

Hot take: Kickoffs out of bounds, missed field goals, dropped punts… I’ve seen those before.

These 3 things were brutal last year and keeps lesser opponents in games.

  1. The Rookie WR’s weren’t ready.

Hot take: Cambpell, Clark and Mclaurin didn’t make much of an impact and that’s ok. Corey Smith, Dontre Wilson and Jailin Marshall will be back this Saturday.

Keep learning young guns.

  1. Doran Grant will not be missed.

Hot take: One of my all time favorite corners helped win Ohio State the national title last year and his absence left a huge void in the starting lineup this season.

In stepped Gareon Conley, who struggled in limited action last season-He may have looked like the best player on the defense Monday night. A great sign for the rest of the season.

  1. Braxton Miller is Ohio State’s Percy Harvin

Hot take: Every year since Urban arrived at OSU, a player has received this stigma but this year it may finally come to fruition.

Holy hell that boy has some moves.

A Look Around the Country

Some Teams Impress, Others Do Not in Week One

Welcome to my weekly column, A Look Around the Country, which will highlight notable games from the week before and week ahead as well as the Heisman and Playoff race. Special features include an in-depth look at the Buckeyes as well as a Michigan update, mainly for folks bask in their misfortunes. As always, feel free to comment with your own opinions and I hope you enjoy!

It was an exciting first week back with a Hail Mary pass that put BYU on top of Nebraska in the first edition of the Mike Riley era while teams like Ohio State and Alabama rolled to big wins in primetime. Notre Dame and UCLA certainly looked impressive but TCU and Michigan sure didn’t. Anyway, it sure is great to have football back.

Notable Games Last Week

TCU 23, Minnesota 17

In a game that was much closer than the experts predicted (I was not one of those experts,) the Horned Frogs were able to escape a close one in Minneapolis. Trevone Boykin was not overly impressive and neither was the rest of Gary Patterson’s squad. They need to improve or else they’ll drop one and be out of the playoff picture again.

Northwestern 16, Stanford 6

The Wildcats were able to pull off the upset of the 21st ranked Stanford, which should be huge for their confidence, looking forward into the season. With the Big Ten West being wide open, anything can happen and that includes Northwestern being in the hunt to head to Indy in December. Stanford’s loss is disappointing but the Pac 12 is as wide open as any conference so they are not out of it yet.

Texas A&M 38, Arizona State 17

The Aggies were very impressive in their win over the Sun Devils and they now, deservedly so, are ranked in the AP Top 25. I thought A&M would take another step backwards while ASU would take a step forward and really contest for the Pac 12 crown. At this point (even though anything can happen- see 2014 Ohio State), it appears I was wrong.

Notre Dame 38, Texas 3

The Irish sure looked impressive in their romp of Charlie Strong’s Longhorns but the loss of RB Tarean Folston for the season hurts their playoff chances. Other than that, Notre Dame looked as impressive as any team I watched this weekend and their ranking below reflects that. Texas has a long way to go.

Alabama 35, Wisconsin 17

Despite Alabama’s big win, I do not think they are deserving of their high ranking. Derrick Henry was very impressive (he shot up in my Heisman poll) but the mediocrity of QB Jake Coker keeps me from having more respect for them. Wisconsin has taken a step back with the loss of Melvin Gordon but Paul Chryst will have them back near the top of the Big Ten West.

Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24

We finally have our answer to the QB race to end all QB races: Cardale Jones. The offense seems to be clicking in mid-season form (even without three of their best receivers) and the Silver Bullets picked up where they left off. I almost forgot: Braxton Miller is a freak of nature athlete and will only get better. The Buckeyes don’t have that tough of a schedule (get used to hearing that all season) and they really won’t get tested again until Michigan State in late November. The Buckeyes play Hawaii on Saturday. RIP to the Rainbow Warriors.

Big Games this Week

Oklahoma at Tennessee

These two teams which are in serious transition this season, will battle it out in Knoxville. I believe that both teams are overrated at this point and would be surprised if either made a New Year’s Day Bowl. Fifteen years ago this would have been the game of the year.

Saturday, September 12 at 6pm on ESPN

Oregon at Michigan State

The Sparties has been waiting a year to avenge their loss in Eugene from last season and I think they will get revenge. Connor Cook will play great but the dominant offensive and defensive lines of Michigan State will manhandle Oregon. I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets out of hand in the second half. The nation will be put on notice after watching this one.

Saturday, September 12 at 8pm on ABC

LSU at Mississippi State

Mississippi State finds themselves back in the Top 25 (not sure why) but they will be playing a pretty talented Tiger team with Leonard Fournette leading the charge. In the SEC, anything can happen so expect a competitive game. This one just begins to shape the SEC playoff picture.

Saturday, September 12 at 9:15pm on ESPN

Michigan Update

Jim Harbaugh’s much anticipated opener didn’t go exactly as planned for Wolverine fans. To be fair, Michigan didn’t look half bad and will improve as the season wears on but the quarterback situation is dire. If they get that fixed, they’ll turn some heads. Michigan plays Oregon State this week.

The Catalyst

The other day I was on Facebook because I’m ancient. It showed me a photo from three years ago of my kids and niece playing in their Ohio State jerseys. Seemed like a nice moment so I shared it with the two hundred-ish people I grew up with/went to high school with/worked with at some point but didn’t burn all the bridges on my way out. I should’ve predicted what happened next, but I didn’t.

One smart-ass who will remain nameless (mainly because I know he was messing around) joked, “Those poor kids being made to wear Ohio State clothes. Lol.”

Lol indeed.

So I replied, “You’re right. We should’ve put them in the colors of a team that sucks.” #sickburn

Because he’s either a Purdue fan or a Notre Dame fan to the extent he cares about college football at all. Still, I knew he was kidding and it was all in good fun.

The Epiphany

Still, the exchange made me think. Which fanbases, if any, really have any credibility or room to talk when they run down the football program at The Ohio State University (est. 1870 in accordance with the Morrill Land Grant Act of 1862)?

What criteria should we use to decide this? Win percentage against Ohio State and total number of wins against Ohio State seemed logical. What timeframe? We certainly don’t want to go back to 1892 because 1: all of a sudden a certain Team Up North will rather inaccurately resemble Not A Dumpster Fire, and 2: it’s not really relevant data. College football has changed a lot in the last two years, let alone the last century.

No matter the cutoff date it’s going to be somewhat arbitrary and prompt cries of Selective Endpoints™ from people in denial about how much their team sucks. That being the case, I realized I could go ahead and choose whatever timeframe I damn well felt like.

TL;DR I went with my lifetime, which means we’re looking at data beginning with the 1978 season.*

In case it comes up (and I imagine it will) the 1978 Sugar Bowl was played in January of 1978, a month before I was born. This actually impacts the stats a tiny bit but I didn’t know that when I started this. You’ll see.

The Numbers

Thirty-seven years is a REALLY long time. I’ve never experienced a span longer than that, if we’re honest. Ohio State has played 458 games in that span and won 347 of them (a 0.774 win percentage; not too shabby!) They’ve even tied six times, maybe one of which I can remember.

Results by conference (linked image shows each team’s record vs. Ohio State, not OSU’s record against them)

Since February of 1978, a total of eleven teams are over .500 against Ohio State as of this writing. A grand total of two of those (USC, Florida State) have beaten Ohio State more than twice.

One thing about this list: none of these teams play in the Big Ten. The B1G team with the best winning percentage against the Fightin’ Buckeyes of the Olentangy is Nebraska with a 1-1 record in that time. Next up from the B1G is a certain Team Up North with a 0.473 win percentage, followed by Wisconsin and Penn State who each have beaten the Buckeyes about 38% of the time they’ve played in the last 37 years. No other B1G team has even won three in ten against the Buckeyes.

More like the Big One and Little Fifteen, amirite?

Another result that was less surprising was that more than half of the teams on that list played in the Mighty SouthEastern Conference Pawwwwwl (MSECP). What was more surprising (to me) was that none of those teams have beaten Ohio State more than twice. Not nearly as dominant as the obnoxious Kentucky, Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt fans might have you believe when they’re whooping about their apparent superiority-by-osmosis.

The Results

There are seven teams that, in the relevant period, are over .500 against Ohio State and have beaten them more than once. Any team that’s just 1-0 against the Buckeyes in that time, well… I’d just point to this and leave it at that.

7: Texas (2-1, point differential: Ohio State +11) – Texas has two wins by a total of six points, thanks in many ways to Ryan Hamby and Anderson Russell. On the other hand, Ohio State has one win by 17 points thanks to Heisman Winner Troy Smith. Also, Texas was 6-7 last year, so…

6: Alabama (2-1, point differential: Alabama +6) – Alabama won the ‘94 Citrus Bowl 24-17 and the ‘86 Kickoff Classic 16-10.* On the other hand, Ohio State won this game, so…

* – and here’s why I said earlier the 1978 Sugar Bowl might come up. Alabama beat Ohio State 35-6 in that game. A few things: 1 – Although the game was played in 1978, it’s considered part of the 1977 season. 2 – Like I said above, I wasn’t born until a month after the game was played. 3 – I didn’t even realize all this when I did the analysis. 4- Spend a few hours making your own pretty Excel file, and post that or whatever if you don’t like it. 5 – Shut up.

5: Clemson (2-0, point differential: Clemson +7) – Two close and surprisingly infamous games, the 1979 Gator Bowl and the 2014 Orange Bowl, which saw the end of the line for Saint Wayne Woodrow Hayes (pbuh) and Everett Withers, respectively. Fair enough. If you’re one of the dozens of Clemson fans out there, feel free to talk trash about Ohio State. I guess.

4: South Carolina (2-0, point differential: South Carolina +24) – Back to back Outback Bowls in which the Gamecocks beat Steve Bellisari twice. On the other hand, in games not started by Steve Bellisari the Gamecocks are 0-0 all-time against the Buckeyes. That seems relevant, so…

3: Florida (2-0, 1.000; point differential: Florida +34) – Props where due, the 2006 National Championship Game was brutal. I’ve almost gotten over it by now. Then in the 2012 Gator Bowl a mediocre Gator team beat possibly the worst Ohio State football team of my lifetime by seven points. On the other hand…

2: Florida State (3-0, point differential: Florida State +43) – Two Seminole wins in the early 80’s and the Sugar Bowl curbstomping in 1998. Fair enough. If you’re a FSU fan, feel free to talk trash about Ohio State.

1: USC (6-0, point differential: USC +87) – Can’t really argue here. The Trojans have consistently whooped our boys since my birth. Credit where due. If you’re a USC fan, feel free to talk trash about Ohio State.

Oh Yeah…

If you’re a fan of one of the following teams, you really oughta think about swallowing whatever clever comment you had in mind about Commodore Urban Francis Xavier Meyer and his mighty squad of ne’er-do-wells.

Notre Dame (0-3, point differential: OSU +46) – Many of my fuzziest memories come from those.

Oregon (0-4, point differential: OSU +66) - One of my best friends is a Duck fan. Still, woof.

Cincinnati (0-5, point differential: OSU +91) – Ohio’s Other BCS Team. Roflcopter.

Pittsburgh (1-6, point differential OSU +147) – Suck it, Fat Urkel.

Indiana (2-30-1, point differential OSU +LOL)

Minnesota (2-28, point differential OSU +ROFL)

Northwestern (1-25, point differential OSU +LMAO)

The Art of Revenge: Virginia Tech

marked the beginning of the 2015-2016 College Football season.  With a few high profile games in the books we have already witnessed a perceived upset at TTUN’s expense.  College Football is a beautiful thing and any team can be beaten, at any given moment or anytime during the season.  We as fans have been dealt a near death-blow at The Shoe last season when the visiting Hokies came in and outplayed us.  I am sure that we all experienced a lot of anxiety and a lot of doubt afterwards.  The ESPN pawns doubting The Buckeyes and doubting the BIG as a whole.  We suffered that entire week.  But look what happened.  We took the loss like men, the team came together and we took the entire nation by storm en-route to being crowned the Inaugural College Football Playoff Champions.  What a feeling.  Now after spending the year in the hunt and as the hunter, the Buckeyes find themselves as being the hunted.  The Chase has now been dubbed as The Grind.  The Grind to defend.  The Grind to prepare for every teams best shot.  During this article I will compare and contrast both teams.  I will also let you know who has the upper-hand in each category.  I want to analyze and predict the outcome, but most importantly have fun with it.

The Coach:

This year our Buckeyes will be opening up the season in Blacksburg and the atmosphere will be intense.  With Frank Beamer at the helm as Head Coach, the Hokies have gone an impressive 134-39-1 in his 29 seasons at Virginia Tech.  He has a career winning percentage of .667% out of 348 games.  That is 231-115-2 for you analytical folks.  Urban Meyer has coached for the last 14 years with stints at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and then Ohio State.  He has compiled an astounding 142-26 W-L record and a 8-2 record in Bowl Games.  Meyer holds a .845% winning percentage, besting rival Nick Saban’s .754% record.  Even though Saban and Beamer have been coaching longer, you cannot sleep on or doubt Meyer’s ability to get his team to perform at a higher level, during big games and throughout the season.

Beamer pulled out the win last season by upsetting the Buckeyes in Columbus.  Do they have what it takes to pull out another?  As I fan, I hope not, but like what Lee Corso would say, “not so fast my friend.”, the silver bullets will look to decimate the same opponent who nearly cost them while pursuing the Championship Chase.  I understand that it was last year, but I am still semi-upset about it.  The one play that immediately comes to mind is the pick-6 at the end to seal the game for Virginia Tech.  But I know Meyer has a plan in place.  During highly anticipate “revenge games”, Meyer has compiled a 9-2 record during these instances.  This is since 2001.  So watch out Beamer.  The Silver Bullets are coming.  With that statement, I am predicting Meyer to stretch that record to 10-2.  Meyer will scheme and find ways to make the Hokies pay for almost costing them a championship last year.

My Prediction:  Ohio State.

Offense vs Offense:

The Buckeyes are absolutely loaded on offense even with the suspensions of two of their premier offensive weapons, Dontre Wilson and Jalin Marshall.  They will also be without Corey Smith, who showed up when the Buckeyes needed plays the most last season.  That is a huge loss for the Buckeyes.  Couple that with the loss of Noah Brown and a less confident Buckeye fan would spaz out.  Don’t fret though, with the QB battle still raging on and with the positional switch for Braxton Miller, I expect no drop off.  The younger, less experienced players (ahem, Johnnie Dixon, James Clark) and potentially a few freshmen (looking at you K.J Hill).  Someone will step up.  Other than that, RB Elliot, WR Thomas and TE Vannett all have returned and the Buckeyes looked primed for another run.  They will also look forward to doling out some revenge.

Now on the Virginia Tech sideline, Michael Brewer is back and primed for another huge game against the Buckeyes, but during this game they will be the home team.  Other than Brewer, TE Ryan Malleck and WR Demitri Knowles will provide the necessary Senior leadership to a young Hokies Offense.  Can the younger players make an impact and will they step up?

Advantage:  Ohio State.

Defense vs Defense:

With Joey Bosa being held out for this game, it will be interesting to see how DE Jalyn Holmes and DE Sam Hubbard will fare during Bosa’s absence.  With LB’s Lee, Perry and McMillan returning and with DT Washington and DB’s Bell, Powell and Apple in the fold, it would be difficult to get momentum against this defense.  There are pieces in places and emerging underclassmen who will also be utilized at some point this season.  There is a ton of potential and I am anxious to see who will step up and who will falter.

On the Virginia Tech sideline, CB Kendell Fuller is the most well know player on the defense.  FS Riley, the player who recorded the pick-6 at the end of regulation will look to shut down the Ohio State offense.  With a young defensive line the defense will look toward the challenge.  Last year the defense caused 3 INT’s.  Can they repeat and will the Bear Defense work again?

Advantage:  Ohio State.

While this won’t be a walk in the park.  Blacksburg will offer a lot of crowd noise and a bunch of obnoxious fans, but it won’t deter Ohio State from getting the revenge that they want and that they need to have.  They are hungry and they want to come out swinging on all cylinder and I expect to see a lot of fireworks.  J.T. Barrett will be the starter, but the Hokies mustn’t focus on him alone.  Cardale Jones will apparently get some time at QB and former QB Braxton Miller will look to burn DB’s all around the field.  Let’s not forget about Ezekiel Elliot, Michael Thomas and Nick Vannett could do to shred a defense.  I know that it may seem biased, but hey I said that I wanted to have fun with it so I predict the Buckeyes to shred the Hokies in every phase of the game.  Go Bucks!

Final Score:  Ohio State defeats Virginia Tech, 52-17

Questions from Blacksburg

Your wondering what Hokie Nation is wondering about the Buckeyes, your curious as to what their mindset is along with what some of their questions are. Wonder no more Buckeye Nation as Dwight Lester not only answered some questions I had for him but asked me some questions.

FG: Urban Meyer stated he wasn’t going to name a starter until the day before or day of the game with the Hokies, give us here in Hokie Nation some insight on the most burning question around this game who the starting quarterback is going to be when the Buckeyes walk into Lane Stadium.

MotSaG: I can say after Urban Meyer’s press conference on Monday very little light was shed on the subject. He did however say he should have a feeling when the Buckeyes start Game Week Practices on Wednesday. He stated that it will depend on who does what in practice and can change weekly, even during the game. He did stress that mistakes weren’t going to be a reason to change “Mistakes are fixed by great effort”. Meyer says that this is still to close to call and he isn’t trying to be difficult or hide who he is actually going to put in to be the starter.

In all honesty I know its the million dollar question but who would Hokie Nation want to face? The quarterback that, in his first season after not playing any football for two years, finished in the top five of Heisman voting or the quarterback who won the Big Ten championship, Sugar Bowl and National Championship. Barrett starts he might have extra motivation since the only team he has lost to in college football is Virginia Tech, in his house. Jones starts and Hokie defensive tackles might get a little worried as Jones is know for tucking and driving defensive tackles back when he initiates the hit first.

Whoever lines up under center for Ohio State Monday night, Buckeye Nation knows the Scarlet and Gray are in good hands.

FG: Do you believe the revenge factor will play a big part in this game or will the Buckeyes treat it like any other stiff non-conference foe?

MotSaG: Not going to lie there probably is, for us fans without a doubt and I can imagine the players feel the same thing. The Hokies prevented Buckeyes from getting a perfect season. Urban said that he feels a little nudge because the Hokies defeated Buckeyes. He said he doesn’t want to take anything away from VT “They have great players and team” but he has always said the Buckeyes coaching staff didn’t prepare team for the scheme Hokies came at them with.

Will be hard to treat this like any other non conference foe seeing no matter how bad Hokies looked after beating OSU they are better than Hawaii, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. Plus the game will be on national TV, the coveted Monday Night Football spot, it’ll almost be like an NFL game.

FG: What do you believe will be the biggest factor in the game on Labor Day? How will Ohio St use this factor to their advantage or overcome this factor?

MotSaG: The biggest factor right now is the WR position. Buckeyes have 3 players suspended and they are all pretty good then last week Noah Brown suffered a season ending broken leg. Can the buckeyes spread the field to allow Ezekiel Elliott to do his thing? Can Braxton Miller make some magic plays we are use to him doing while he was the QB? The WR group doesn’t have very much actual game playing experience now.

This can be an advantage because how much tape is available on them. How hungry are these kids to make a name for themselves and be the “next man up”.

FG: How big a part in the offense do you look for Braxon Miller to play?

MotSaG: Everyone who is familiar with Urban Meyers offense knows that the H-Back position is an integral part of the offense. Everyone is always curious as to who is the next Percy Harvin type to play the position. Nothing against any other Buckeye players but in my opinion Miller might be the closest. He truly is one of the greatest athletes in college football today. You don’t win Big Ten player of the year two years in a row (sophomore and junior years). Miller was a Heisman candidate before the injury last season, matter of fact, still is one just his odds are lower than if he was the QB. Braxton is a spectacular player and you sit there with your mouth dropped open with some of the moves he makes, they are seriously just like enjoying a video game. The major knock on Miller though is his toughness and durability, have to see how he handles hits when he goes across the middle to catch the ball.

FG: Losing Joey Bosa was a huge blow to the Buckeyes defensive pressure schemes. How do they recover and who do you think Hokie fans should be on the look out for?

MotSaG: Without a doubt not having Bosa and 4 other WR is going to hurt, but this is Ohio State. It was proven last year at the most important position (QB) it’s Next Man Up and Buckeyes have very good depth at every position since Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus.

That being said watch out for Sam Hubbard, Jalyn Holmes and Adolphus Washington just to name a few on the defensive line. Buckeyes have a lot of depth there and will be rotating a lot to keep guys fresh. The linebacker group of Raekwon McMillan, Darren Lee and Joshua Perry is projected to be one of the best in the nation, Buckeyes secondary isn’t a slouch either as possibly one of the top units in the country since Chris Ash joined the Buckeyes last year to straighten that mess out. Eli Apple, Gareon Conley are the starting corners, Damon Webb will be the nickle and the safeties Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell are some hard hitting ball hawks. They say the Silver Bullets are back. The tough hard nose defense that Ohio State use to have is back and they are ready to make that jump up to be elite. Even if they stole Pat Narduzzi and Michigan States defense they will just do it better than Sparty.

What to expect on the first night of college football

After over eight months of waiting, today is the day that college football finally returns and The first night of the season will not disappoint, as we have three huge games to look forward to.

The season will kick off at 5pm in Charlotte, North Carolina, when the Tar Heels and the Gamecocks of South Carolina take the field for just the third time since 2007. South Carolina won the game in ’07 and the game two years ago by an 11.5 average point margin. The battle for the Carolinas should prove to be another close game but I predict that the ole ball coach Steve Spurrier will leave Bank of America Stadium with a W.

The next game of the night starts at 7:25. Jim Harbaugh will make his debut tonight as the Head Coach of Michigan, against the University of Utah, where the Wolverines are five point underdogs. Who will win this game will come down to whether Michigan’s defense will be able to stop the multifaceted offensive attack of the Utes. Ultimately, Utah will come out on top.

Finally, the biggest game of the evening will begin at 8 o’clock as Texas Christian will travel to TCF Bank Stadium to take on the Minnesota Gophers. TCU is the favorite to win this game, but the Gophers are a tough group and they aren’t playing for a moral victory. They want to win; and to do that, they will have to sustain long drives, ultimately keeping the ball out of the hands of Trevone Boykin and the explosive TCU offense. At the end of the night, Gary Patterson will out coach Jerry Kill and get the win.

We’ve waited and waited for months for this day; and its finally here. As five o’clock rolls around tonight, I want you to relax and watch some great football; You deserve it.
