MotSaG B1G Power Power Poll Week 7

Week 7 has come and gone and of course that doesn’t mean that there wasn’t any movement in this weeks Power Poll. Enough with the byes already…

1. Michigan State (5-1,2-0) Sparty needed an interception late to put Purdue’s threat away. The Spartans are showing a flip flop from last season, strong offense weaker defense. Hopefully #1 and #2 in our Power Poll stay unbeaten until the Nov.8th night time game in East Lansing.

5. Minnesota (5-1,2-0) The Gophers looking like they are a couple of players away from becoming a possible elite B1G team. Don’t sleep on these guys even if their two conference wins have come against Michigan and Northwestern

6. Rutgers (5-1,1-1) The Scarlet Knights are going to be playing in one of their biggest conference games to date. Yes Penn State is suppose to be a rival but honestly it takes some time to build up a rivalry and beating Michigan at home was a nice touch but the maize and blue aren’t the same team that they are suppose to be. Rutgers has a decent team they are physical and demand respect in their first year in the B1G.

7. Northwestern (3-3,2-1) The youth movement got the Wildcats off to a fast start in conference play but they weren’t able to hold on for a win against the Gophers Saturday.

8. Wisconsin (4-2,1-1) The Badgers have a great running game behind Gordon and company but the question is who is the QB? There is serious problems under center that need to get fixed and this is the perfect time for the Badgers to get that done with their bye week.

9. Maryland (4-2,1-1) The Terps are licking their wounds from their loss to the Buckeyes and now they are prepping for a Hawkeye team that might be finding their groove.

10. Purdue (3-4,1-2) The Boilermakers are really improving and I know I’m not the only the one who has been saying that. Hazell is starting to get this program turned around in a short period of time and with some good recruits next couple of years you are going to hear some noise coming out of West Lafayette.

11. Penn State (4-2,1-2) The Nittany Lions must have come close to setting a record for three and outs against Michigan Saturday. Their offensive line is horrific and Hackenberg is running for his life making mistakes.

12: Michigan (3-4,1-2) While part of me believes that Michigan should still probably be ranked 14th and others believe that they should be ranked above Penn State we should all agree that the season just needs to be over soon for the Wolverines. Buckeyes Flip An Ohio Kid

Seems like forever since we had a commitment post for Ohio State. Truth be told with HS and College Football in full swing you rarely see a lot of kids committing in the fall. Ohio State has been looking for a tall WR to commit seemingly since Urban Meyer became the Head Coach. Today they reached into Ohio and snatched up a recruit who was formerly committed to Kentucky of the mighty SEC. What will surely anger the entire state of Kentucky has OSU fans giddy over landing a truly talented player who grew up a Buckeye fan. So lets get to know our newest member of Buckeye Nation.

Alex Stump committed to Ohio State today via his Twitter account…

Alex Stump is a 6’3″ 190 lbs 4 star WR from Lakewood, Ohio. Alex is a big time WR prospect who reminds me a lot of Brian Hartline. He runs great routes and has good speed at 4.5 Forty. He is the kind of player who can run deep or short routes and has no fear of running across the middle. Last year as a JR he had 57 catches for 987 yards and 14 TDs.

Get to Know: Brad Peterson 2015 DT Recruit

Brad Peterson is a Defensive Tackle coming out of the Class of 2015. He is from Du Bois, PA and stands 6’5 weighing 280. 247 Sports has Brad as a 2 star recruit with a 78 rating. Also given the ranking of being the 49th player out of PA in his class. Brad Peterson is not your everyday student athlete. He was born hard of hearing, and his hearing got worse throughout his life. He now uses hearing aids and is doing better. In the classroom, Brad uses a sign language interpreter. A very interesting article on he and his interpreter can be found here.

Despite his hearing ability, Brad is a standout athlete at DuBois. “I’m blessed where I am. You know. Just feel really lucky and worked hard to get where I’m at today.” Peterson explains. “It’s a lot harder for hard of hearing people but I work hard and it’s paying off.” Brad said. He works hard on and off the field. Currently holding two offers from Central Connecticut State and Saint Francis, Peterson is not satisfied.

When asked about the recruiting process Brad told me “Intense, really stressful during football season but it’s very exciting. Close on a Penn State offer. Really close.”. Others schools showing interest are Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Cal and North Carolina. He has visited Penn State, and plans to visit again on the 25th for the Ohio State game. Peterson also plans on possibly visiting Purdue.

When asked about what schools are closet to offering he listed “Penn State, Purdue, Kent State and Ball State.” He does not hold an offer from Ohio State. But there is a chance he may receive one. Brad explained he has been in contact with Coach Johnson. “If they don’t get Mclean I might get the leftover spot.” Peterson said.  “Columbus is a great place to be and to be part of the scarlet and gray would mean a lot. I’ve been there before when I camped at Rivals Camp Series in Columbus.”

Coach Johnson has been telling Brad to keep sending him film every week and to kick butt. “He’s got a couple guys ahead on the board but he’s still looking for a DT so he’s going to continue to recruit me.” Peterson explains. When asked about how he plays Peterson said “I’m big, fast, explosive and I can clog gaps very well.” “I would like to improve on speed and hand work.”

Peterson practices an extra half hour on the field. He works hard at everything he does. An Ohio State offer is possible, depending on how certain things workout. Here are some game highlights on Brad.

Grading 2014 Ohio State Football, At The Bye

While I agree with Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer that having a bye week at this point in the season is not necessarily wanted or welcomed by the coaches, players, or fans, it does provide an opportunity to assess how Ohio State is doing after the first third of the season. (Technically, Ohio State was at the 1/3 point after the Cincinnati game, but this bye weekend gives me a chance to evaluate the team, without an opponent to preview against.) Let us begin with the various position groups:

Quarterbacks: A solid ‘B’, but could rise to an ‘A’ by the conclusion of the season. Redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett was unenviably thrown into the starting position when projected starter Braxton Miller’s shoulder injury was season-ending. Barrett struggled immensely against Virginia Tech in week two, but has had three straight sterling performances versus Kent State, Cincinnati, and Maryland. Will Barrett be able to continue his strong play as Ohio State continues B1G competition for the remainder of the season? Cardale Jones has played sparingly as a backup so far this season.

Running Backs: B+. Ezekiel Elliott has seized the starting position, and looks to be in the Carlos Hyde mold of being able to wear an opposing defense down. Senior Rod Smith figures to be a complimentary player for the remainder of his Ohio State career. Coach Meyer has praised Bri’onte Dunn as being worthy of more playing time. True freshman Curtis Samuel is presently battling an ankle injury. The coaching staff seems to have concluded that Dontre Wilson is best used as a perimeter player running the ball; the same for Jalin Marshall. Warren Ball has battled injuries this season, and gets little playing time.

Wide Receivers: B-. This position group is kind of a mixed bag. The talent is there, but has not established itself on a consistent basis. Michael Thomas, Corey Smith, Evan Spencer, Devin Smith, Jalin Marshall, Dontre Wilson – all play, yet none have seized the starting positions with a commanding performance. Senior TE Jeff Heuerman has battled injuries, but may have turned the corner. Nick Vannett has also played capably this season.

Offensive Line: B+. Considering where this group started, how the players were being mixed in and out of the lineup, with inconsistent results…This offensive line may be the most pleasant surprise on the team. Losing four starters, and moving the only returning starter with Taylor Decker to left tackle, meant the offensive line was completely unsettled and incohesive. The offensive line is only going to get better by the season’s end. Senior Darryl Baldwin has been singled out by Coach Meyer for his continuing development at right tackle. Jacoby Boren has taken a firm grasp of the starting center position.

Defensive Line: B-. Joey Bosa is staring down a first team All-American selection after this season. The suspension of Noah Spence has hurt Ohio State’s pass rush. Michael Bennett, Adolphus Washington, and the combo of Steve Miller/Rashad Frazier have played well, but have not been nearly as dominant as expected by the fan base. An opportunity to dominate the opposition looms when the Buckeyes travel to Penn State on October 25th.

Linebackers: B. True freshman Raekwon McMillan may have clinched the starting middle linebacker position by the season’s end. Darron Lee was the player of the game in the season opener versus Navy. Joshua Perry has been relatively quiet on the playmaking front. Will this group be able to step up with physical rushing opponents such as Michigan State and Minnesota on the horizon?

Secondary: C. A true work in progress. While improving, this is the weak area of the team. How much of it is scheme, and how much of it is personnel? Eli Apple may have turned a corner, no pun intended, with his performance at Maryland last weekend. This position group may improve with better performances at Penn State and Indiana.

Special Teams Units: B+. True freshman Sean Nuernberger has been better after two missed field goals against Virginia Tech in the second game of the season. Will Nuernberger be able to come through if needed to make a game winner? Cameron Johnston is quietly reliable at the punting position. Coach Meyer stresses the importance of special teams as being a gateway to playing time, and the coverage units have been solid.

Conclusion: If 2014 Ohio State football were a stock, this would be a solid buy acquisition. Ohio State should be 7-1 heading up to East Lansing, MI, for what should be a B1G East Division elimination game. “Should be” does not mean “will be”, especially after Virginia Tech came into Ohio Stadium and defeated the Buckeyes in week two of the season. If Ohio State can defeat a very good Michigan State team in front of a national television audience, it is not far-fetched for Ohio State to possibly emerge as a playoff participant.

The Spread, Week Seven: Mo’ Plays, Mo’ Problems

It’s difficult as an Ohio State fan these days to find things to be unhappy about, but that doesn’t stop some of us from looking. If that’s you, chances are you’ve settled on the exciting new sport of Luke Fickell Scapegoating.

Fickell, as you know, is the linebackers coach as well as handling some unknown percentage of the defensive coordinating job. Naturally, this makes him entirely and exclusively responsible for every single defensive breakdown that occurs over the course of a game.

I’m not sure why Fickell is the target of so much outrage. Maybe it’s because we were pretty bad when he was thrust into the head coaching job in 2011. Maybe it’s because he’s the only Ohio State coach to lose to Michigan since 2003.

Regardless, it certainly is fair to say that the defense has gotten worse under Urban Meyer than it was under Jim Tressel. If by “worse” you mean that we give up more yards and points than we used to.

But the question is: why?

I promise you the answer is not “Luke Fickell.” In fact, it probably doesn’t have anything to do with the defense at all.

Last week, Ohio State beat Maryland 52-24. In 2010, the Buckeyes took out Minnesota 52-10. How were the Terps able to score two more touchdowns than the Gophers? First, that Minnesota team was way worse than this Maryland team, but that’s still probably not the reason.

In 2010, Minnesota ran 52 plays on 12 drives. Last week, Maryland ran 65 plays on 14 drives. Is that because this year’s defense couldn’t get off the field the way the 2010 D could? Not at all. In fact, this year’s team held the ball for over two and a half minutes longer than the 2010 team did.

The reason we’re giving up more points and more yards than before is the offense. The high-tempo, no-huddle approach results in more offensive plays, but also more defensive plays because we’re getting into the end zone faster.

In that 2010 game, a 3:00 scoring drive consisted of six plays and covered 49 yards. Last week, a 3:01 scoring drive consisted of eight plays and covered 75 yards.

This is a shift that can be seen around the nation. Teams everywhere are running more plays and scoring more points than they did just a few years ago. With that comes more pressure on the defense.

Since 2012, the team that leads the nation in plays per game has given up 30 points per game on average. In that time, Ohio State has given up 22 points per game. The Buckeyes are also doing better in scoring defense this year than the average team that runs a similar number of offensive plays.

Predicting Every Single FBS College Football Game: Week Seven

Upsets, Upsets, Upsets! That was the theme of week six. Everywhere you turned a top 25 team was getting beaten and as a result the polls have been shaken up and it led to my worst week of picking yet. My record for week six: 38-19 (66.7% of games picked correctly). To see my picks for week six, click here. My overall record for the season: 297-87. In week seven the amount of top 25 match-ups is staggering again. Picking these games aren’t easy, especially with all of the parity across college football and every team seemingly ready to fall apart at the drop of a hat. This is fantastic as a fan though! I was watching games all day last Saturday and I anticipate doing the same again for this Saturday. Let’s just hope I fare better with my picks this week. A Look Around The Country

Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! It was arguably the craziest weekend in college football history as a number of top ranked teams went down. To quote Ian Malcolm from Jurassic Park, “You see a Tyrannosaur doesn’t follow a set pattern or park schedules, the essence of chaos.” Malcolm’s Chaos Theory would be the best way to describe the weekend that was. So how does all of this shape the playoff picture into the second weekend of October? The teams that lost (especially Alabama, Oregon, and Oklahoma) still have a chance to sneak back into the discussion. I have a feeling one of them will. So let’s get our hands dirty to recap last week and preview this week, but remember to wash your hands before you eat anything!

Notable Games Last Week

Ohio State 52 Maryland 24

The Buckeyes played well in every facet of the game as they dispatched Maryland in their Big Ten home opener. Welcome to the conference, Turtles. J.T. Barrett had another 5 touchdown game and it is exciting to see this offense start to come together. The secondary also saw some improvements while limiting the number of big plays Maryland could gain, especially with Stefon Diggs. Ohio State will be idle this week for the last time until after the Big Ten Championship Game. This stretch will determine our fate.

Ole Miss 23 Alabama 17

Suck it Saban. The Rebels, or as I wish to call them, the Admiral Ackbar’s were able to get the upset over the Crimson Tide. Alabama has been flirting with an upset all season and not it has finally happened. Now Ole Miss controls its own destiny in the SEC West race but I don’t think they win out. Alabama will end up sneaking back into the discussion (both the AP and Coaches Polls dropped them to 7) and the Iron Bowl will once again decide the SEC.

Notre Dame 17 Stanford 14

Here come the Irish! Notre Dame was able to hang on to the W over Stanford and have set themselves up to be in the heat of the Playoff Discussion. This win puts them into the top 5 and sets up a mega showdown with Florida State in two weeks. Gholston and the offense is starting to come together at the right time. They play North Carolina this week so we’ll see if there is a letdown before heading to Tallahassee.

Michigan State 27 Nebraska 22

The Huskers were almost able to cap off a crazy Saturday by coming back with the upset win but Sparty was able to hold on. Michigan State has struggled with closing out a game (see Oregon game) and this one wasn’t any different. Nebraska still looks like the team to beat in the West after Wisconsin lost to Northwestern so I think we’ll see them in the Big Ten Title Game. Michigan State’s next big test is against the Buckeyes on November 8. I couldn’t be more amped for that one. Payback’s a bitch.

Big Games This Week

Texas vs Oklahoma

Who doesn’t love the Red River Rivalry at the State Fair in Texas? This has always been one of my favorite rivalry games outside of the Big Ten. The Sooners will try to bounce back after their loss to TCU against a struggling Longhorn team. We’ll see how Charlie Strong handles the big stage against their biggest rivals. Oklahoma should win big and it is certainly possible for them to get back into the playoff picture. Still a lot of football to be played.

Auburn at Mississippi State

2 weeks ago this was just another game but now that Miss. State has vaulted from unranked to 3 (I still laugh at that fact) it is much more important. Nick Marshall and the Tigers got an easy victory over a struggling LSU squad and it’s safe to say that the Bulldogs (is that what they’re called?) pose a much tougher threat. But I have Auburn by a couple touchdowns.

Texas Christian at Baylor

In now a wide open Big 12, this game between the Horned Frogs and Bears is now holding a lot more weight. Expect a great environment in Waco as there fans are starting to see that a Playoff berth is very possible after Upset Saturday. TCU is on cloud nine after knocking off Oklahoma but this could turn out to be an even tougher test. Bryce Petty and Baylor will be too much for TCU and they’ll win by 10.

Oregon at UCLA

Both teams are coming off devastating losses that severely hurt their playoff chances. But if either one is able to win out, I believe that could be enough to find themselves in the final four. If Marcus Mariota is the leader I think he is, he’ll rally this Duck team to make a final push. Bret Hundley on the other hand does not have that competitive quality in my opinion. That’s the difference in this one. Oregon gets back on track with the W.

Ohio State (Idle)

I hate bye weeks so much. But this will provide an opportunity to regroup one last time before getting into the meat of our schedule. Our next 4 games feature Rutgers (on the rise), Penn State (in Happy Valley at night- white out), Illinois (ok, they suck), and Michigan State (let’s be 10,000 Persians for a day). I cannot begin to express how bad I want to beat Sparty. And I’m thrilled we have the opportunity to embarrass them in their stadium, in front of their fans, in primetime. Be afraid East Lansing, be very afraid.

Michigan Update

This seems to just get worse and worse every week. Michigan lost to Rutgers in East Rutherford and there seems to be no end in sight. There is some talk that many of the students will be boycotting the game against Penn State which will be broadcast at 7pm on ESPN 2. So we’ll see how that goes. But there really isn’t much else to say for this team. They better start praying they can get either a Harbaugh or Les Miles.

My Playoff if the Season Ended Today

1. Florida State (beat Wake Forest 43-3, plays at Syracuse this week) Well, the Seminoles are back into my number 1 spot after every other team in front of them went down. I still have a feeling they lose before the ACC championship but just not sure when.

2. Auburn (beat LSU 41-7, plays Mississippi State this week) The Tigers are a great football team. And if it wasn’t for a lackluster performance against Kansas State (they should have lost) they would be my number one. Once again, I see the Iron Bowl deciding the fate of the SEC.

3. Baylor (beat Texas 28-7, plays TCU this week) The Bears roll into this one with a lot of confidence. But they haven’t been in this sort of position in a long time. I’m not sure they can handle it. A date with Oklahoma on November 7 will decide a lot. TCU could sneak up on them though.

4. Notre Dame (beat Stanford 17-14, plays North Carolina this week) Yes, I have the Irish in my Playoff. Brian Kelly has this team rolling while finding ways to win in crunch time. That’s a recipe for a dangerous team. There game at Florida State in 2 weeks will be ginormous, as long as they don’t overlook the Tar Heels in South Bend.

MotSaG Live Podcast #8 – Win Over Maryland & Roundtable Discussion

As always I will be hosting the podcast this week and be joined by fellow MotSaG writers. For this show, the following MotSaG writers will join me: Shannon, Andrew and Chip. On this show we’ll talk about the Buckeyes first Big Ten win of the year over Maryland, the Big Ten’s performance from this past weekend and as always preview the biggest upcoming games around the country along with the slate of Big Ten games this weekend. With the Buckeyes on another bye week, in place of the Buckeye game preview we’ll be having a roundtable discussion on stories around college football, including the crazy upsets from this past weekend and who’s overrated and underrated at this point of the season. We will have some special guests joining us on the podcast too! Those special guests are Joe Dexter, an editor at The Buckeye Battle Cry; Brian Cook, founder of mgoblog.com; and Donovan James, content manager at utnsports.com.
