The Art of Revenge: Virginia Tech

marked the beginning of the 2015-2016 College Football season.  With a few high profile games in the books we have already witnessed a perceived upset at TTUN’s expense.  College Football is a beautiful thing and any team can be beaten, at any given moment or anytime during the season.  We as fans have been dealt a near death-blow at The Shoe last season when the visiting Hokies came in and outplayed us.  I am sure that we all experienced a lot of anxiety and a lot of doubt afterwards.  The ESPN pawns doubting The Buckeyes and doubting the BIG as a whole.  We suffered that entire week.  But look what happened.  We took the loss like men, the team came together and we took the entire nation by storm en-route to being crowned the Inaugural College Football Playoff Champions.  What a feeling.  Now after spending the year in the hunt and as the hunter, the Buckeyes find themselves as being the hunted.  The Chase has now been dubbed as The Grind.  The Grind to defend.  The Grind to prepare for every teams best shot.  During this article I will compare and contrast both teams.  I will also let you know who has the upper-hand in each category.  I want to analyze and predict the outcome, but most importantly have fun with it.

The Coach:

This year our Buckeyes will be opening up the season in Blacksburg and the atmosphere will be intense.  With Frank Beamer at the helm as Head Coach, the Hokies have gone an impressive 134-39-1 in his 29 seasons at Virginia Tech.  He has a career winning percentage of .667% out of 348 games.  That is 231-115-2 for you analytical folks.  Urban Meyer has coached for the last 14 years with stints at Bowling Green, Utah, Florida and then Ohio State.  He has compiled an astounding 142-26 W-L record and a 8-2 record in Bowl Games.  Meyer holds a .845% winning percentage, besting rival Nick Saban’s .754% record.  Even though Saban and Beamer have been coaching longer, you cannot sleep on or doubt Meyer’s ability to get his team to perform at a higher level, during big games and throughout the season.

Beamer pulled out the win last season by upsetting the Buckeyes in Columbus.  Do they have what it takes to pull out another?  As I fan, I hope not, but like what Lee Corso would say, “not so fast my friend.”, the silver bullets will look to decimate the same opponent who nearly cost them while pursuing the Championship Chase.  I understand that it was last year, but I am still semi-upset about it.  The one play that immediately comes to mind is the pick-6 at the end to seal the game for Virginia Tech.  But I know Meyer has a plan in place.  During highly anticipate “revenge games”, Meyer has compiled a 9-2 record during these instances.  This is since 2001.  So watch out Beamer.  The Silver Bullets are coming.  With that statement, I am predicting Meyer to stretch that record to 10-2.  Meyer will scheme and find ways to make the Hokies pay for almost costing them a championship last year.

My Prediction:  Ohio State.

Offense vs Offense:

The Buckeyes are absolutely loaded on offense even with the suspensions of two of their premier offensive weapons, Dontre Wilson and Jalin Marshall.  They will also be without Corey Smith, who showed up when the Buckeyes needed plays the most last season.  That is a huge loss for the Buckeyes.  Couple that with the loss of Noah Brown and a less confident Buckeye fan would spaz out.  Don’t fret though, with the QB battle still raging on and with the positional switch for Braxton Miller, I expect no drop off.  The younger, less experienced players (ahem, Johnnie Dixon, James Clark) and potentially a few freshmen (looking at you K.J Hill).  Someone will step up.  Other than that, RB Elliot, WR Thomas and TE Vannett all have returned and the Buckeyes looked primed for another run.  They will also look forward to doling out some revenge.

Now on the Virginia Tech sideline, Michael Brewer is back and primed for another huge game against the Buckeyes, but during this game they will be the home team.  Other than Brewer, TE Ryan Malleck and WR Demitri Knowles will provide the necessary Senior leadership to a young Hokies Offense.  Can the younger players make an impact and will they step up?

Advantage:  Ohio State.

Defense vs Defense:

With Joey Bosa being held out for this game, it will be interesting to see how DE Jalyn Holmes and DE Sam Hubbard will fare during Bosa’s absence.  With LB’s Lee, Perry and McMillan returning and with DT Washington and DB’s Bell, Powell and Apple in the fold, it would be difficult to get momentum against this defense.  There are pieces in places and emerging underclassmen who will also be utilized at some point this season.  There is a ton of potential and I am anxious to see who will step up and who will falter.

On the Virginia Tech sideline, CB Kendell Fuller is the most well know player on the defense.  FS Riley, the player who recorded the pick-6 at the end of regulation will look to shut down the Ohio State offense.  With a young defensive line the defense will look toward the challenge.  Last year the defense caused 3 INT’s.  Can they repeat and will the Bear Defense work again?

Advantage:  Ohio State.

While this won’t be a walk in the park.  Blacksburg will offer a lot of crowd noise and a bunch of obnoxious fans, but it won’t deter Ohio State from getting the revenge that they want and that they need to have.  They are hungry and they want to come out swinging on all cylinder and I expect to see a lot of fireworks.  J.T. Barrett will be the starter, but the Hokies mustn’t focus on him alone.  Cardale Jones will apparently get some time at QB and former QB Braxton Miller will look to burn DB’s all around the field.  Let’s not forget about Ezekiel Elliot, Michael Thomas and Nick Vannett could do to shred a defense.  I know that it may seem biased, but hey I said that I wanted to have fun with it so I predict the Buckeyes to shred the Hokies in every phase of the game.  Go Bucks!

Final Score:  Ohio State defeats Virginia Tech, 52-17

Questions from Blacksburg

Your wondering what Hokie Nation is wondering about the Buckeyes, your curious as to what their mindset is along with what some of their questions are. Wonder no more Buckeye Nation as Dwight Lester not only answered some questions I had for him but asked me some questions.

FG: Urban Meyer stated he wasn’t going to name a starter until the day before or day of the game with the Hokies, give us here in Hokie Nation some insight on the most burning question around this game who the starting quarterback is going to be when the Buckeyes walk into Lane Stadium.

MotSaG: I can say after Urban Meyer’s press conference on Monday very little light was shed on the subject. He did however say he should have a feeling when the Buckeyes start Game Week Practices on Wednesday. He stated that it will depend on who does what in practice and can change weekly, even during the game. He did stress that mistakes weren’t going to be a reason to change “Mistakes are fixed by great effort”. Meyer says that this is still to close to call and he isn’t trying to be difficult or hide who he is actually going to put in to be the starter.

In all honesty I know its the million dollar question but who would Hokie Nation want to face? The quarterback that, in his first season after not playing any football for two years, finished in the top five of Heisman voting or the quarterback who won the Big Ten championship, Sugar Bowl and National Championship. Barrett starts he might have extra motivation since the only team he has lost to in college football is Virginia Tech, in his house. Jones starts and Hokie defensive tackles might get a little worried as Jones is know for tucking and driving defensive tackles back when he initiates the hit first.

Whoever lines up under center for Ohio State Monday night, Buckeye Nation knows the Scarlet and Gray are in good hands.

FG: Do you believe the revenge factor will play a big part in this game or will the Buckeyes treat it like any other stiff non-conference foe?

MotSaG: Not going to lie there probably is, for us fans without a doubt and I can imagine the players feel the same thing. The Hokies prevented Buckeyes from getting a perfect season. Urban said that he feels a little nudge because the Hokies defeated Buckeyes. He said he doesn’t want to take anything away from VT “They have great players and team” but he has always said the Buckeyes coaching staff didn’t prepare team for the scheme Hokies came at them with.

Will be hard to treat this like any other non conference foe seeing no matter how bad Hokies looked after beating OSU they are better than Hawaii, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. Plus the game will be on national TV, the coveted Monday Night Football spot, it’ll almost be like an NFL game.

FG: What do you believe will be the biggest factor in the game on Labor Day? How will Ohio St use this factor to their advantage or overcome this factor?

MotSaG: The biggest factor right now is the WR position. Buckeyes have 3 players suspended and they are all pretty good then last week Noah Brown suffered a season ending broken leg. Can the buckeyes spread the field to allow Ezekiel Elliott to do his thing? Can Braxton Miller make some magic plays we are use to him doing while he was the QB? The WR group doesn’t have very much actual game playing experience now.

This can be an advantage because how much tape is available on them. How hungry are these kids to make a name for themselves and be the “next man up”.

FG: How big a part in the offense do you look for Braxon Miller to play?

MotSaG: Everyone who is familiar with Urban Meyers offense knows that the H-Back position is an integral part of the offense. Everyone is always curious as to who is the next Percy Harvin type to play the position. Nothing against any other Buckeye players but in my opinion Miller might be the closest. He truly is one of the greatest athletes in college football today. You don’t win Big Ten player of the year two years in a row (sophomore and junior years). Miller was a Heisman candidate before the injury last season, matter of fact, still is one just his odds are lower than if he was the QB. Braxton is a spectacular player and you sit there with your mouth dropped open with some of the moves he makes, they are seriously just like enjoying a video game. The major knock on Miller though is his toughness and durability, have to see how he handles hits when he goes across the middle to catch the ball.

FG: Losing Joey Bosa was a huge blow to the Buckeyes defensive pressure schemes. How do they recover and who do you think Hokie fans should be on the look out for?

MotSaG: Without a doubt not having Bosa and 4 other WR is going to hurt, but this is Ohio State. It was proven last year at the most important position (QB) it’s Next Man Up and Buckeyes have very good depth at every position since Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus.

That being said watch out for Sam Hubbard, Jalyn Holmes and Adolphus Washington just to name a few on the defensive line. Buckeyes have a lot of depth there and will be rotating a lot to keep guys fresh. The linebacker group of Raekwon McMillan, Darren Lee and Joshua Perry is projected to be one of the best in the nation, Buckeyes secondary isn’t a slouch either as possibly one of the top units in the country since Chris Ash joined the Buckeyes last year to straighten that mess out. Eli Apple, Gareon Conley are the starting corners, Damon Webb will be the nickle and the safeties Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell are some hard hitting ball hawks. They say the Silver Bullets are back. The tough hard nose defense that Ohio State use to have is back and they are ready to make that jump up to be elite. Even if they stole Pat Narduzzi and Michigan States defense they will just do it better than Sparty.

Looking Back At Ohio State’s 2012 Recruiting Class (Part Two)

Back in 2012, Urban Meyer’s first recruiting class as head coach of Ohio State consisted of 25 players. As has already been discussed in length in part one, 11 players are no longer with the program. This 44 percent departure rate is higher than “The Rule of Thirds,” which is generally applied to recruiting classes when it comes to retention.

Even with an unusual number of departures, that still leaves 14 players who have remained a part of the Buckeyes program. Of this group, five are expected to contribute this season and possibly 2016, while nine are projected starters. Here are those players listed in order of when they verbally committed to Ohio State.

Friday Open Thread: Week One

We’re going to try and get back to our weekly Open Thread discussions. These will hopefully run when there are games happening (Ohio State games and others) and also a Friday Open Thread where we have a discussion of the aspects of the game facing Ohio State for that particular week. This week’s Open Thread is an easy one, and it’s accompanied with a new poll. Who runs out on the field for Ohio State’s first possession Monday night?

MotSaG Q&A with an Opponents Blogger- Virginia Tech Week

We had the opportunity to get with Dwight Lester (@HokieHiVP107) of fightinggobbler.com. We were able to ask his some questions and he ask us that Virginia Tech fans have. You can listen to our podcast that we did with Dwight. Here are some questions he was so graciously able to answer so we could share with you, our readers.

MotSaG: Do you feel Virginia Tech’s defense is going to get to Buckeye quarterback an unprecedented seven times and force 3 interceptions again? Will they be as stiffing as to not allow Ohio State to hardly convert any 3rd downs again? In other words will the Hokie defense be as good as last season.

FG: Last year’s game was about as perfect a scheme and execution as you could have in a big game spot. Bud Fosters “Bear Defense” Cover 0 scheme seemed to be just what the doctor ordered. However, if the scheme had not worked there was not really a backup plan for a defensive scheme. The scheme was amazing but the talent to execute it was there for the Hokies. Believe it or not the defense we have this year might be better than last years. We return our entire front four which includes Dadi Nicolas and Luther Maddy. Also, the secondary is healthy and extremely talented with Kendall Fuller leading the way.

So to answer your question do I believe we will have the same kind of success the answer is no probably not as much success as in 7 sacks and 3 picks. That being said I do believe we have the talent to get to the quarterback and possibly force turnovers. I am not naïve enough to believe the same defense will work two years in a row, however I believe Bud Foster will have more tricks up his sleeve. Foster is an unreal defensive mind and with the talent the Hokies possess across the defensive front and an entire summer to come up with a new scheme I look for the game to be a very interesting chess match.

MotSaG: Ezekiel Elliott had a broken wrist was only given eight carries, Buckeye offensive line and J.T. Barrett only had 2 starts when Virginia Tech came into Columbus and DOMINATED, do you feel that if that game was played towards the end of the season we would have been looking at the same results?

FG: A fanboy answer would be “yeah we beat you once why couldn’t we do it again”. The actual answer is more than likely we would have gotten blown out. Where the Buckeyes grew together as a team and got better as the year progressed the Hokies took a different path. We were devastated by injuries all across the board. We went through 4 running backs being lost for the season, two defensive lineman, two separate secondary players, and 3 off our offensive line just to name a few players. The Hokies seemed to take the momentum they gained from a huge road victory and flush it down the commode. After all we were struggling at the end of the year to keep our 22 bowl game streak alive. Honestly, even if we played another perfect game at the end of the year against the Buckeyes I believe we would have come up short because of all the injuries.

MotSaG: How in the world did the Hokies come into The Horseshoe and dominate the way they did and turn around and get beat by lesser talent? Is this a coaching issue, Beamer didn’t get his guys up for lesser opponents? Is it time for a coaching change I know they is speculation this season or next might be his last.

FG: I don’t think is necessarily a coaching issue or a motivation issue for the Hokies. For some reason the Hokies have the knack of losing to teams they have no business even being in close games with. For some reason it seems the Hokies most times play down to the competition. The prevailing theory is no matter what is said by the coaching staff in pregame the team sometimes gets too loose before games. All Hokie fans have nightmares about losing to lesser teams the James Madison Game was the most recent nightmare.

As far as a coaching change, Beamer is going to get to leave on his own terms. He has a similar type of equity as the likes of Bobby Bowden and Joe Paterno had before they choose to retire. That being said Beamer might be on the downward slide toward his retirement. Last season Beamer had some surgery which forced him to coach from the press box. His son Shane took over the coaching duties on the field and in the media which was very telling to most Hokie fans, as Bud Foster is believed to be the Heir to the Hokie head coaching job. If Beamer’s health holds he could coach for possibly 5 more years however, the better bet is for his impressive tenure to end after next season. I say next season because of the Hokies much anticipated game against Tennessee at Bristol Motor Speedway. Beamer has done most of the promotion for the game and with a not so stable coaching position at Tennessee the game officials probably want a familiar face to remain.

MotSaG: Seems the Hokies offense has been very inconsistent, what should Buckeye fans keep an eye out for that might become a major spark for Virginia Tech this season.

FG: Three major players to watch out for on the offensive side of the ball will be JC Coleman, Bucky Hodges of course Michael Brewer. Coleman is the Hokies starting running back this season after being 4th on the depth chart last season. He is a beast on the field and in the weight room. Some of his bench and squat numbers are unbelievable for a guy his size. Coleman revamped the Hokies rushing attack. When Colman became the starter the yards per carry went from 3.6 to 6.4.
Bucky Hodges is a nightmare matchup for all of the Hokies opponents. His size and speed are unreal assets for him as a player. Hodges can literally lineup anywhere in the offense, which is a huge weapon for the Hokies. I look for Hodges to have a huge season starting with the Ohio State game.

Michael Brewer is the quarterback that could not miss last season against Ohio State. However, for the majority of the season he was wildly inconsistent. Brewer however, is another year older, and has a better grasp on the offense. Brewer made some great plays with his feet last year as well as his arm. Brewer will have to play well for the Hokies to have a chance against the Buckeyes.

MotSaG: Unfortunately its been a while since we have heard VT mentioned for National Championship contention. Can this be the team to restart the discussion and bring the Hokies to the table and challenge for the ACC?

FG: I think this team is more talented than the teams we have had in the past years. A run the ACC championship is not out of the question at all. However, a run to the college football playoff might be a little out of reach this year. The Hokies need a good season with success in order to get the program back on track towards the National Championship picture. A win over the Buckeyes would give this year’s a huge boost of momentum towards a goal of a championship this season, and a huge boost towards recruiting. There is a place in the Athletic Center reserved for a national championship trophy whether or not if I will see the space filled or not is yet to be seen.

I would like to thank Dwight Lester of fightinggobbler.com once again for joining us this week to discuss the big Monday night game. Can’t wait to get this going as I am sure you feel the same way. If you want to know our predictions don’t forget to listen to our show, we would love to here some of your predictions. Feel free to let us know in the comment section.

Go Bucks!!!

Looking Back At Ohio State’s 2012 Recruiting Class (Part One)

The 2012 Ohio State football recruiting class is technically the first of head coach Urban Meyer’s players that were signed and brought to Columbus. I write the phrase “technically” because there are many extenuating factors that need to be remembered and contemplated when looking back at the 25 players who signed on the dotted line in February 2012 and became Buckeyes.

First and foremost, I have been reviewing Ohio State recruiting classes over the years. I have looked back at the recruiting classes going back to 2005, which included players such as James Laurinaitis, Brian Hartline and Malcolm Jenkins. The 2005 class was relatively small with 18 players signed, and was not highly rated by the recruiting analysts, but the Buckeyes only lost three from that class to transfer or academic issues, resulting in 15 who either started or contributed to Ohio State during their careers. This 83 percent success rate ranks that group highly in the unofficial “Rule of Thirds” concept that is applied to recruiting classes.

The Rivals, Part II: Vengeance

The 2014 season was already off to a questionable start when the Wolverines welcomed the Utah Utes to the Big House on September 20th. Sure, they were 2-1, but those two wins were against Appalachian State and Miami (OH). The loss, on the other hand, was a 31-0 shutout by Notre Dame, and fans were already dreading what that game signaled for their other upcoming rivalry matchups against Michigan State and Ohio State.

The Buckeyes weren’t in a great place themselves when the Hokies of Virginia Tech came calling on September 6th. A season-ending training camp injury to Heisman-hopeful QB Braxton Miller had fans on edge, and a lackluster win on the road against Navy the week before wasn’t easing their nerves. Ohio State had dropped three spots in the AP poll, which is pretty much unheard of following a Buckeye victory.

Michigan sputtered: dropping passes, taking sacks, turning the ball over and giving up a 66-yard punt return. The fan reaction was so negative that coach Brady Hoke was compelled to comment on the booing after the game. But the boos were only the beginning. Following a 90-minute lightning delay, the teams return to the soaked field in the middle of a nearly-empty stadium. Michigan’s fans had taken the universe’s hint and bailed out. Utah’s fans—many of whom likely traveled 1600 miles to the game—were suddenly the majority in the largest college football stadium in the country. They congregated behind their team’s bench and left the Wolverines bewildered as they cheered their team to a 26-10 win.

“That was the weirdest thing,” Michigan linebacker Jake Ryan noted after the game, “playing at home with no one in the stadium.”

It wasn’t the weather or fairweather fans that baffled the Buckeyes against Virginia Tech. It was a bear. Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster broke out a version of the 46 (or “Bear”) defense, an aggressive scheme that sacrifices deep pass support in favor of intense pocket pressure. Foster reasoned that Ohio State’s inexperience on the offensive line coupled with a young QB thrust into action would make the Buckeyes susceptible to such an attack. He was right. OSU quarterback J.T. Barrett completed just 9 of his 29 passes, threw 3 picks, and was sacked 7 times on the way to a 35-21 Virginia Tech victory.

Tonight, Michigan will step into Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City looking to start a new era off on the right foot. Monday night, Ohio State begins a campaign for a repeat national title at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg. The two teams’ expectations for the season couldn’t be more different: The Wolverines just want to see improvement, and maybe some flashes of brilliance from one of their favorite sons. A decent season will go a long to validating the Michigan Man philosophy. Meanwhile, anything less than that repeat is going to feel like a disappointment to Ohio State fans.
But first, both need a little taste of vengeance.

Meet your 2015-2016 Team Captains.

On August 28th, Urban Meyer and Ohio State announced their six captains for their upcoming season. They include Jacoby Boren, J.T. Barrett, Taylor Decker, Joshua Perry, Braxton Miller, and Tyvis Powell. These players were chosen to be captains by the team’s vote. The coaches had no direct influence on it, so these players are very well respected both on and off the field by the rest of the team.

“This is the most players I’ve ever seen receive votes for captains,” said Urban Meyer. “We had 14 players receive votes, but these six separated themselves.” Cornerback and Special Teams Coach, Kerry Coombs even added that “This is the best group of leaders I’ve ever seen.” Leaders are one of the most important things for a group of people to succeed, so when you have a high quantity of high quality players, the team should be in good position.

Jacoby Boren - Although he’s not the most popular “slob” on the team, Senior Jacoby Boren has to take command during games since he does the snapping. Jacoby has faced some adversity through his days at Ohio State, but if you know anything about his family, the Boren’s, then you are likely familiar with his toughness.

Heading into the last season (2014-2015 year), one of the main concerns with the team was the offensive line. The team had lost 4 offensive linemen, 3 of which started their rookie year in the NFL, including previous center Corey Linsley. Many people had overlooked Jacoby, especially since Chad Lindsay, a center from Alabama, transferred to Ohio State in hope to get the starting nod. What’s obvious though, is that the “many people” didn’t know Jacoby. “Did I ever think when I shook his hand when I first got here in 2012 and he was already committed to us, and he walked through the door and, was like, ‘uh oh, what’s this now?’ I actually started thinking, maybe he could be a blocking fullback. And he’s turned out to have a heck of a year. He’s tough, a very good player. Great leader, great team guy. I love Jacoby.” Urban Meyer said after the National Championship Game.

J.T. Barrett - J.T. is a redshirt sophomore QB from Wichita Falls, TX. You’ve all heard of him because he is currently in the spotlight of one of the most highlighted sports events/battles of the year. He also came from a season, which many people forget, that was arguably the best season in B1G history. He threw for over 2,800 yards and 34 TDs along with 938 yards rushing and 11 TDs until getting injured in the regular season finale.

Even though J.T. is the youngest among this group of captains, he is arguably the best leader. In 2013, Urban Meyer had some of the players go through leadership training to obviously enhance the leadership in the team. J.T. was the only freshman at the time that joined the older group of leaders. One of J.T.’s first instance of leadership for this team came before he was really even apart of the team. Former Ohio State offensive coordinator, Tom Herman, recalled the experience of when J.T. persuaded Dontre Wilson and James Clark to become Buckeyes. “He goes on for five or 10 minutes on why he chose this place over others and he’s going on about winning multiple championships and what an Ohio State degree can do for you and playing in this system and for this coach and at this school.” “I had something to say something, and it just flowed.” J.T. said about it.

When the news was first announced that he was a captain, many were convinced that this was practically the announcement that J.T. would be the starting QB. According to Urban Meyer, however, that is not the case. “That means he’s a captain, not necessarily going to take the first snap. The actual quarterback, it’s a factor, but it’s not the factor. The guy that’s going to give us the best chance to move down the field is going to be the guy taking the snap.”

Taylor Decker - Taylor Decker is one of, if not the most popular “slob”. He started at right tackle during the 2013 season on one of the best offensive lines in the country. In 2014, he was the lone returning starter, and he was moved to left tackle. Taylor Decker, and a few others helped patch up a rough start to the season for that unit, and turn it around to one of the most dominant in the nation. Ohio State is a power run team led by the offensive line, and that certainly showed during the memorable postseason run. Whenever this “run” is mentioned, Ezekiel normally mentions the “slobs” as the main reason, and when Urban was asked about it, he said even he could’ve run through some of the holes Taylor Decker and the offensive line created.

Taylor Decker was one of the top offensive linemen in the country last year, and some even speculated that he would depart early for the NFL draft. “I have personal goals, and I don’t want to draw any attention to them because that’s kind of selfish,” Taylor said shortly after the season. “But I do have personal goals that I think, if I achieve them, will help this team. If I achieve those the NFL will be there after my senior year.” Taylor is a team player, and he didn’t want to leave his teammates behind, partly because of the bond they created, but he also knew he had a responsibility. He knew he had to take care of the younger players the way Jack Mewhort, Andrew Norwell, Corey Linsley, and Marcus Hall took care of him. “Those were the guys who showed me the way,” Decker said. “They are guys I had a lot of respect for … guys I looked up to. I did things the way they showed, and the honor of being a captain is important. I’m excited my teammates have chosen me and the five others guys to represent this team as a whole.”

Joshua Perry - Joshua Perry is a senior from Olentangy HS, and he is currently the oldest starter in the LB unit. He’s a leader for the entire defense, not just LB, and he is the player spokesman for the football program. He is always well-dressed and well-mannered, while staying a beast on the football field.

Joshua played his true freshman season, while only racking up 5 total tackles. In his sophomore season, Joshua was named a starting outside linebacker on the opposite side of Ryan Shazier. As a young starter, Perry racked up 64 total seasons. This previous season Joshua made a huge leap as one of the more experienced players on the field. Although he was often overshadowed by the “electricity” of Darron Lee, or the complete dominance of Joey Bosa on the defensive line, Joshua led the team with 124 total tackles.

“We have a lot of special guys in this locker room and a lot of guys who buy into the program,” Josh said. “We have guys who care so much more about their teammates and this great school and this program than just themselves. And I think it’s huge to have this amount of selfless guys … older guys … leaders and people who we count on viewed that way. It’s huge.” Joshua is a guy who has certainly bought into the program (as seen in the picture above) and he loves the team. He knows that he is counted on to be a leader to the younger players on the team, and he is certainly up for the challenge.

Braxton Miller - This is Braxton’s second go around at being a team captain. As the starting QB in 2013, and a heavy heisman candidate, Braxton was picked to be a captain then, too. A lot of things have obviously happened since that point. He tore his labrum twice and missed the full 2014 championship season, then after consistent rumors of transfers or position change, Braxton finally shut them down. Soon after that, though, Braxton did announce he was switching position to become an H-Back; often referred to as the “Percy Harvin Position.”

“How much he has invested in us and how much we’ve invested in him, it’s a brotherhood,” Ezekiel Elliott said after Braxton announced he was returning to Ohio State. “Why would he leave this for something else?” “This guy had an Ohio State tattoo tattooed on him in high school before he let everyone know he was coming here, for him, I just couldn’t see him leaving and going anywhere else.” former fellow QB, Cardale Jones added. Although most players and coaches within the program act like he never considered leaving, I think there was some there. He admitted to the fact that several schools reached out “hard”, and with his initial goal to play QB, that was certainly going to be difficult. “But you know, at the end of the day, all these guys work just as hard as I do,” Braxton said. “And they want to see the same thing that I want to see. … They work hard throughout their career, they got to that point, and I was happy for them.” That statement alone certainly shows leader characteristics, and selflessness.

“I have a ton of respect for him being able to humble himself and make a position change for the betterment of the team,” Taylor Decker said at B1G Media Days. “I think it will be a cool moment. The fans and the stadium are going to go crazy just seeing No. 5 out there.” Braxton has since changed to #1, but Decker said it correctly. It was a very team-oriented move, and I know I will certainly be excited to see Braxton, the best athlete in the country, back on the field.

Tyvis Powell - Tyvis Powell, team comedian, starting safety, Cardale’s Father; all of those are acceptable for him. Tyvis Powell is one of the most popular players on the team for passionate fans, and common fans alike. For one, he saved The Game:

And in my opinion he is the funniest player on the team. Listening to any Tyvis Powell interview will make you laugh. He is always smiling, and joking and trying to make other people have a better day. Tyvis has said that on some days when he isn’t joking all the time, people will ask him what’s wrong. Tyvis is an all around great guy that everybody wants on the team. He is a player that can help lighten the mood and make things more fun for everybody.

Not only is Tyvis a great and funny guy, he is also an extremely hard worker, and a very talented football player. Although there were some struggles during last season, he and Vonn Bell made a great duo. In terms of tackles and interceptions, they were near the top of Ohio State football history. They are the back of the defense, and they take pride in making big plays, and not giving up many long plays. “They’re really the generals of the defense,” safety coach and co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash said. “They make all the calls, they make all the adjustments, they cover up a lot of stuff. (Like) if a D-lineman is out of a gap or a linebacker has mis-fit something, if you have really good safeties who tackle well, they take care of it. They get things done.”

Tyvis has earned the trust of all the players and coaches. He is a great example of Ohio State’s culture. Even though he was just a “3-star” coming out of High School, he realized that didn’t really matter. He knew if he bought into what the coaches taught he would succeed. One of the best stories of Tyvis when he was trying to earn that Ohio State offer is this story by Ryan Ginn, which I recommend you read if you haven’t.

Football captains

So, this team is fortunate to have such a great group of leaders. I say fortunate because many teams don’t have anything near it, but leadership is obviously very challenging. These guys worked hard to be in the position that they are in, and will continue to work hard to help the team.

Virginia Tech Preview

After an eventful offseason, it is finally time for the Buckeyes to take on Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, for a Labor Day showdown.

Ohio State is coming off a championship season. But that doesn’t mean the Hokies don’t pose a threat to the defending national champions. It was just last season when Frank Beamer’s squad came into the ‘Shoe and gave the Buckeyes a surprising 35-21 defeat.

Last season it was clear that the Buckeyes were not ready for Virginia Tech. Whether it was getting matched up with Navy’s triple-option offense the week before or being outmatched from the unique Bear front, the Buckeyes clearly got outplayed. The Buckeyes will more than likely be ready for a unique defensive game-plan from the Hokies.

Quarterback Situation:

No one knows who will be the starting quarterback for the high-powered Buckeye offense. Whether Cardale or JT, the offense should thrive. Although it is likely both QB’s will play, the starter will emerge throughout the game, and it will become clear who will run the offense for the rest of the season within a couple of quarters.

Michael Brewer:

We all remember the magic Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Brewer had in Columbus. Brewer seemed to make the big plays when it mattered most. If he has some of last year’s confidence from Tech’s prior victory against OSU, he may pose a big threat to the defense.

OSU’s Suspensions:

Miller looks to makes plays in open space this season.

With the one-game suspensions lurking over Ohio State, a handful of players are bound to emerge. Braxton Miller’s role became a lot larger, a lot faster when it was announced that Jalin Marshall will not be eligible for the season opener. It will be exciting to see Miller embrace his new position. I think Meyer will make sure to get Miller the ball in open space, allowing him to do what he does best, make plays.

To replace Joey Bosa, the defensive will play both redshirt freshman Sam Hubbard and sophomore Jalyn Holmes. Of course, replacing a top NFL prospect like Bosa is impossible. But, Hubbard and Holmes look to emerge and show that they can get the job done.

Outcome:

The Buckeyes will get the revenge they have been longing for all year. But, it will not come easy. An away game at night is not easy, no matter who is hosting. Virginia Tech will most likely keep the came within reach throughout three quarters.

Meyer’s offense will then grab a spark and score a couple of quick touchdowns to give the buckeyes the separation that is going to be expected right from the beginning out of most fans.

Prediction: Ohio State: 45 Virginia Tech: 28

What to expect on the first night of college football

After over eight months of waiting, today is the day that college football finally returns and The first night of the season will not disappoint, as we have three huge games to look forward to.

The season will kick off at 5pm in Charlotte, North Carolina, when the Tar Heels and the Gamecocks of South Carolina take the field for just the third time since 2007. South Carolina won the game in ’07 and the game two years ago by an 11.5 average point margin. The battle for the Carolinas should prove to be another close game but I predict that the ole ball coach Steve Spurrier will leave Bank of America Stadium with a W.

The next game of the night starts at 7:25. Jim Harbaugh will make his debut tonight as the Head Coach of Michigan, against the University of Utah, where the Wolverines are five point underdogs. Who will win this game will come down to whether Michigan’s defense will be able to stop the multifaceted offensive attack of the Utes. Ultimately, Utah will come out on top.

Finally, the biggest game of the evening will begin at 8 o’clock as Texas Christian will travel to TCF Bank Stadium to take on the Minnesota Gophers. TCU is the favorite to win this game, but the Gophers are a tough group and they aren’t playing for a moral victory. They want to win; and to do that, they will have to sustain long drives, ultimately keeping the ball out of the hands of Trevone Boykin and the explosive TCU offense. At the end of the night, Gary Patterson will out coach Jerry Kill and get the win.

We’ve waited and waited for months for this day; and its finally here. As five o’clock rolls around tonight, I want you to relax and watch some great football; You deserve it.
