North of the Border: That Time I Carded an Ace

I accomplished something this weekend that few people I know have accomplished: I got my first hole in one. A 141 yard par 3 upwind, where I took a 6-iron and tossed it up into the wind. It hit a foot above the cup and rolled back in. I wish I could say I planned all that, but honestly I was just happy I hit it towards the green that time. I proceeded to shoot 25 over par for the round.

If you took my round and just looked at that one hole, you might think I’m pretty good at golf (I’m not). This past weekend of college football was very similar. Looking at just one game isn’t going to give us really how good a team is. Is TCU actually not great, or is Minnesota better than we all gave them credit for? Is Notre Dame a world beater, or is Texas just really, really bad? Is the Oregon defense terrible? (Oregon gave up 42 to Eastern Washington?!) We won’t know for a few more weeks where some of these teams stand, though I do still think that TCU and Notre Dame will be contenders for the playoffs. This weekend will start to clear some things up, like if Oregon’s defense is actually that bad. First, let’s take a look back at the three games I had my eyes on over the weekend.

Michigan 17 at Utah 24

Lol Michigan. They did a decent job at containing the Utah run game, but man did the Michigan backs miss some running lanes, and Rudock looked like Devin Gardner.

TCU 23 at Minnesota 17

Every time I flipped to this game from the Michigan game, I felt like I was watching TCU punt or make a dumb mistake. At one pint, I flipped over and watched them fumble in the red zone. TCU was missing some of their playmakers, and their offense should improve as they return.

Wisconsin 17 vs Alabama 35

Two words: Derrick Henry. Oh mama, there goes that man again. While QB Jake Coker didn’t look great, he was good enough. As long as Derrick Henry is healthy, he’ll be the focus of the Alabama offense. Somehow Alabama just produces good RBs – do they have them frozen cryogenically, and every two years they unfreeze a new one? Someone should look into this.

Week 2 Big Games

7 Oregon at 5 Michigan State

Week 2 is headlined by the matchup of Oregon and Michigan State. If I wasn’t going to be in Columbus for the Hawaii game, I would head to East Lansing with some of my MSU grad coworkers for Game Day and such that day. Oregon gave up 42 points to Eastern Washington last week, and over 400 yards passing. However, Oregon also rushed for nearly 500 yards themselves. Michigan State held Western Michigan to double digit rushing yards. As always, the battle will be in the trenches. Last year, Oregon’s offense was able to dig out of a hole in the second half. Michigan State has a shot this year, given that it’s at home. I also am curious to see what the Oregon secondary really is. Connor Cook is a much higher caliber QB, and WR Aaron Burbridge looked great in his first game taking over for the departed Tony Lippet. Oregon QB Vernon Adams, Jr. is coming off of a head injury from a real cheap shot from a former teammate last week, so his health will be something to keep an eye on. Will the game plan be changed to avoid getting him hit? I think Sparty has the slight edge this year. Let’s hope we don’t get a #SpartyNo again this year.

19 Oklahoma at 23 Tennessee

Between “Rocky Top” and “Boomer Sooner”, Neyland Stadium will become the most annoying stadium in all of America. Quick aside – Rocky Top isn’t Tennessee’s actual fight song, and as a somewhat native Tennessean and son of a Tennessee graduate, I feel it is my duty to point that out every time I see it. Now, as for the game. Tennessee played Bowling Green in Nashville and won, 59-30. The secondary for the Vols was iffy at best, giving up over 400 yards through the air. The Falcons also ran for another 100+ yards, for a total offensive output over 500 yards on the day. Tennessee ran for nearly 400 yards and amassed another 200 in passing yards. This game is going to come down to whether Tennessee’s secondary can play well enough for the Volunteer run game to establish itself and allow the Vols to chew up clock, keep Oklahoma off the field, and score 28-35 points. Starting QB Baker Mayfield threw for 388 yards last week against Akron, and is likely licking his chops looking at what Bowling Green was able to do to the orange and white. This should be a fun one, but I do expect Oklahoma to win.

14 LSU at 25 Mississippi State

LSU’s game was rained out last week, so there’s not much to go off of here. I do expect a heavy dose of Leonard Fournette, and then lather, rinse, repeat. LSU QB Anthony Jennings had a decent year last year, but was arrested over the summer, and has been in a QB battle with Brandon Harris for the starting job this year. Les Miles, like many before him last week, has not named a starter yet. Mississippi State returns Dak Prescott from last year’s team that at one point was on top of the country with in state rival Ole Miss. MSU did give up over 400 yards to Southern Mississippi, and containing Fournette could be problematic for the Bulldogs.

I’m still working on a name for this weekly bit, so if anyone has any witty suggestions, feel free to tweet them to me, @BigDaddyChrisO. I might be making a pre game appearance at the Varsity Club while I’m in town, so if that’s your jam, reach out to me and let’s enjoy some adult beverages.

Will The Warriors Want To ‘Come Out And Play’ Ohio State?

Congratulations to Ohio State on the impressive 42-24 opening victory on the road at Virginia Tech. Ohio State not only was able to avenge its lone loss in 2014 by defeating the Hokies, but the game marked the dynamic return of Braxton Miller for the first time since The 2014 Orange Bowl.

The 1979 movie “The Warriors” is a personal favorite. It is well worth the rental if you have never seen it; scrounge some change from your car or couch, and I am guessing you will be able to have enough for the rental. Anyway, below is one of the classic clips that I felt I had to include in my preview, as Hawaii’s team name are the Rainbow Warriors. Wouldn’t it be tremendous if the Ohio State P.A. announcer included this on Saturday, with Urban Meyer’s face superimposed on the screen of the Rogues’ leader? (I would tell you more, but I truly don’t want to spoil the movie for those of you who have not seen it.)

Earlier this week, Shannon Sommers and I previewed the home opener for Ohio State, as the Buckeyes will welcome in the University of Hawaii for a 3:30pm EST kickoff that will be televised on The Big Ten Network. This game will mark the first time that Ohio State and Hawaii have met on the gridiron. Ohio State comes into this game on only four days of rest, while Hawaii is coming off ten days of rest; Hawaii played Colorado on 09/03/2015. As I stated on this week’s Men of the Scarlet and Gray podcast, traveling to/from Hawaii is a physically exhausting experience, as the trip to/from Ohio will take about nine hours of total flight time.

Here are three quick items to keep an eye out for with Hawaii at Ohio State…

1. Cardale Jones Is The Starting Quarterback, But… ~ Look for J.T. Barrett to get substantially more playing time than what happened against Virginia Tech. It would not be surprising to see Barrett enter the Hawaii game while the contest is still in doubt, as Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer may want to keep Barrett fresh. Ohio State fans certainly remember how the 2014 team was forced to play three quarterbacks during the course of the season; why would the coaching staff not have the same pressing concerns? Here is something to contemplate – if this game gets out of hand, and Ohio State builds a truly substantial lead, will redshirt freshman Stephen Collier earn his first playing time as a Buckeye?

2. How Soon Will The Suspended Players Return To The Lineup? ~ Ohio State welcomes back defensive end Joey Bosa and wide receivers Dontre Wilson, Corey Smith, and Jalin Marshall. All are talented players, and can only help the team in a variety of ways going forward. Will Coach Meyer play them in the second or third series, as a manner of continued discipline? On The Urban Meyer Call-In Show on 09/10/2015, Meyer stated that Parris Campbell is a starter, as well as that Curtis Samuel and Braxton Miller will play at H-Back, the same position that Wilson and Marshall have also played.

3. Youth Can, And Should Be Served ~ Jones, Knox, Taylor, Lisle, and Prince. Sounds like a prestigious law firm, and maybe it will be someday in the future. (Jamarco) Jones, (Demetrius) Knox, (Brady) Taylor, (Evan) Lisle, and (Isaiah) Prince represent the listed second team offensive line, from left to right. With Taylor Decker, Jacoby Boren, and Chase Farris all seniors, plus Pat Elflein a redshirt junior who could leave after this season for the 2016 NFL Draft, Ohio State may be in the exact same predicament that the program had in 2014, with four players to replace along the offensive line. Why not play the inexperienced backups, to gain that necessary experience? Ezekiel Elliott will probably rush for over 100 yards by the half; what is there to gain by tiring Elliott out against Hawaii, when players such as Bri’onte Dunn or Warren Ball can take some carries, keeping Elliott fresh for the important stretch run that will begin in November?

Prediction: Hawaii enters this game with a victory over Colorado, but traveling across the mainland into Ohio Stadium is a very tall order. Hawaii has a talented quarterback in Max Wittek, and will throw a 3-4 defensive scheme against Ohio State that the Buckeyes do not routinely encounter. The talent, depth, and experience across the board will just be too much for Hawaii to keep pace.

Earlier this spring, I ranked the opponents on Ohio State’s 2015 schedule, and I ranked Hawaii last. Even the Hawaii correspondent we e-mailed, @dontwarriorboutit, predicted this to be a rout for Ohio State, with a 61-17 prediction. I have it 63-10, as Ohio State will try to keep it from getting out of hand, but it may be difficult with so many talented players, eager to impress the coaching staff, in the hope that impressive plays may garner them more playing time.

New Faces at Receiver, Same Old Results

Coming into the 2015 season, receiver was one of the many positions that the Buckeyes seemed to be loaded with depth. Michael Thomas, Corey Smith, Jalin Marshall, and Dontre Wilson, all played a large roll for the Buckeyes on their way to the College Football Playoffs. Fast forward seven months to the start of fall camp and things are off to a blazing start with this group, right? Wrong! Three of the Buckeyes (Smith, Marshall, Wilson) were suspended for violating team rules and all of a sudden the receiver room looked like Old Mother Hubbard with nothing left in the cupboard. The unfortunate situation left the Buckeyes with Michael Thomas as the only receiver on the roster with a catch in a meaningful game. The good news is that help is on the way, maybe. Braxton Miller’s position change is going to provide the group with some much needed athleticism. Curtis Samuel’s permanent move to H is hopefully going to do more of the same. But what about the rest of the new faces? Miller and Samuel have played under the bright lights before. The Buckeyes have former four and five star players all over this position group that have never touched the field in a game. Is Blacksburg, Virginia, under the lights at Lane stadium, going to be too much? Could Parris Campbell show the same wheels on September 7th that he showed in the 2013 Ohio state championship game? Is Johnnie Dixon going to prove that his knees are fully recovered and play like the same top 100 recruit that Urban Meyer recruited him to be? Most of all, is it possible that Braxton Miller lost a step? Monday night, we got the answers to all these questions.

Braxton Miller:

Rushing: 6-62 1 TD
Receiving: 2-78 1 TD

We all know the Ohio State quarterback competition received a ridiculous amount of national attention over the last seven months. Most people, and rightfully so, were dying to know who was going to trot out for that first snap. What about the other quarterback though? The one who was a two time B1G player of the year? The one who was making his debut at a brand new position while on national television? Some people in their mid-twenties still have no idea what their calling in life is, and that is totally normal. Braxton Miller on the other hand, came out of the womb with a football in hand. Monday night he proved to the world that it doesn’t matter if he is throwing, catching or running, he just needs to be around a football and amazing things can happen. Any questions that I may have had about Braxton’s position switch were answered in full against Virginia Tech. Sure, he is going to have to keep working tirelessly on his route running, but that is something that he is going to need to do regardless until his NFL playing days are over. Braxton showed he can make a non- routine, in game catch when he went down and plucked the ball before it hit the turf for his first grab of the season. During the third quarter, he turned the safety around with a nice inside jab move on a corner route that led to another great grab on his way to a 54yd touchdown, his first of the season. I think we all had a feeling that we were going to see Braxton take a few direct snaps in this game and we were right. He had six carries on a mix of jet sweep touch passes, handoffs, and direct snaps. The most notable carry coming on a direct snap where he did the most Braxton Miller thing I’ve ever seen and took the carry down the left sideline before performing a spin move that isn’t even possible in Madden when the game is on easy mode, and you’re playing against the Browns. Needless to say, I think we were all very pleased with his performance, and his potential going forward at his new position.

Curtis Samuel:

Rushing: 1-10
Receiving: 2-32 1 TD

Curtis is another semi new face to the receiver position. He lined up in the slot last year a bit but was mostly in the backfield backing up Ezekiel Elliot. Curtis wasted no time at all in getting started at his new position. On the opening drive of the game, Cardale Jones was flushed from the pocket, and while rolling to his right, he tossed a bit of a line drive prayer to Curtis in the back of the end zone. Curtis, despite pass interference by a Virginia Tech defender, made an exceptional play on the ball for a 24yd score. Curtis added a carry for 10yds on a jet sweep touch pass. After watching this game and seeing how little Urban Meyer used the backup running backs behind Ezekiel Elliot, one would have to wonder if Curtis will eventually see some more time in the backfield, especially considering the buckeyes get three receivers back from suspension this week. However, I don’t think that is totally necessary because Curtis is every bit as talented as any of the receivers on this team. That is going to be a call that I’m happy Urban Meyer has to make and not me

Parris Campbell:

I remember coaching against Parris Campbell in a scrimmage just before his junior year of high school. We had heard so much about Dante Booker, who is going to be a stud linebacker for the buckeyes after Josh Perry graduates, and nothing about this skinny young running back named Parris Campbell. He let us know who he was real quick as he took a bubble screen about 60 yards for a touchdown on about the fifth play of the scrimmage. He ran sideline to sideline about four times just because he felt like it and then decided that he didn’t feel like running anymore and it was just time to run towards the end zone. Parris is also somewhat in the middle of a position switch. He played mostly running back in high school so this receiver stuff is new to him. He has freaky speed and while the bright lights may have gotten the best of him on his two dropped passes (one of which should have been reviewed because it wasn’t a drop) he had a fine night on the perimeter blocking down field which is something that Urban Meyer frankly stated as the only way you will play receiver at Ohio State. I look for Parris to rebound in these next few non-conference games and get some confidence back. The ceiling is very high for this kid.

Johnnie Dixon:

Receiving: 1-29

Dixon is another new face that screams potential. Johnnie missed the better part of last year due to tendinitis in both of his knees. He had surgery last year and came on pretty strong after spring practice and fall camp. He is another playmaker that blocked well on the perimeter Monday night, and had a nice catch on a broken play for 29 yards. It is going to be very hard to keep Johnnie on the bench after Corey Smith returns this week. Unless Corey has fixed his fumbling ways of last year, I still expect to see Johnnie more on the field than on the sideline, but this is again another decision that I’m glad I don’t have to make.

James Clark/ Terry Mclaurin:

These are two players that I was really hoping to get some offensive snaps in this game. James Clark has been injured for two straight years but his high school high highlight film is the closest I have seen to looking anything like Ted Ginn Jr from a pure speed standpoint. Terry is someone who was talked about highly during all of fall camp. Makes me wonder a little bit if the Buckeye coaches didn’t want to waste snaps on guys that they knew weren’t going to play a ton once the suspended players return to the team. Hopefully these next three games will allow for some of the younger guys at receiver to come in and get their feet wet a little.

Needless to say, the new faces at receiver for the Buckeyes showed up in a big way as a whole. Unlike last year when Virginia Tech stifled this group with tight man coverage, this group flat out found way to get open. We have Urban’s tireless recruiting and Braxton Miller doing Braxton Miller things to thank for that.

B1G Weekly Recap: B1G Letdown on College Football’s Opening Weekend

It was an opening weekend to forget for most of the Big Ten as the conference went just 8-6 including two losses to non-Power 5 conference opponents. Penn State embarrassed themselves against Temple and Purdue fell late on the road to Marshall. Aside from Ohio State’s victory in Blacksburg, Northwestern was the most impressive in victory, upsetting No. 21 Stanford.

Utah 24, Michigan 17

Jim Harbaugh’s debut didn’t go as planned as Utah took advantage of their home field to win their third consecutive game against the Wolverines. Devontae Booker had 124 yards of total offense and a touchdown for the Utes. The Wolverines had their chances to win this game, but a Justin Thomas interception return for a touchdown halfway through the 4th quarter all but sealed the victory.

Jake Rudock threw for 279 yards and two scores, but was picked off three times in his first game as the Wolverines’ quarterback. Harbaugh returns to Ann Arbor for his first home game next week against Oregon State.

TCU 23, Minnesota 17

Minnesota stuck around against the No. 2 team in the country but just couldn’t find a way to overcome the talented Horned Frogs. Trevone Boykin showed flashes of what’s made him a Heisman Trophy contender as he threw for 246 yards and a TD as well as rushing the ball for 92 yards and another score.

Mitch Leidner was good, not great, for the Golden Gophers, going 19-35 for 197 yards and a touchdown. Freshman Rodney Smith led the way on the ground with 88 yards, doing his best to fill the big shoes left by David Cobb. Minnesota travels to play Colorado State on the road on Saturday.

Michigan State 37, Western Michigan 24

Buckeye fans probably had an eye on this matchup in Kalamazoo with two future opponents squaring off. The score made it look a little closer than it was, as the Spartans jumped out to a 27-10 halftime lead before faltering down the stretch. Zach Terrell had a big game for the Broncos, throwing the ball 50 times for 365 yards and two touchdowns.

For Michigan State, Connor Cook was very average, going just 15-31 passing for 256 yards and two scores. Madre London ran in two touchdowns in the early going for the Spartans as they got a tune-up before next week’s primetime showdown against Oregon in East Lansing.

Northwestern 16, Stanford 6

Northwestern pulled off one of the bigger shocks around the conference by taking out No. 21 Stanford. Northwestern quarterback Clayton Thorson made the biggest play of the day when he took off 42 yards down the left sideline in the 2nd quarter to give the Wildcats a lead they would never surrender. All other scoring plays were field goals as Northwestern held on to start the season 1-0.

The Wildcats will look to build off their early season success when they host Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

Iowa 31, Illinois State 14

In a game some pundits thought the Redbirds might give Iowa a run for their money, the Hawkeyes handled the 2014 FCS runner-ups easily, nearly doubling Illinois State’s yardage total (431-231). C.J. Beathard got his first career start at Kinnick Stadium and was impressive in the victory.

Beathard threw for 211 yards and a touchdown while adding two more scores on the ground as Iowa jumped out to a 31-0 lead before allowing a couple late touchdowns. It’s a rivalry week for the Hawkeyes as they prepare for a trip to Ames to take on Iowa State.

Maryland 50, Richmond 21

Maryland survived a bit of a scare early from Richmond when the Spiders took a 14-13 lead less than five minutes into the 2nd quarter. The Terrapins would put all fears at ease though and they reeled off 37 straight points after falling behind.

William Likely set a Big Ten record for punt return yards in a game with 233 in the season-opening win. Likely took one punt all the way back 67 yards for a touchdown that put the exclamation point on this one. Things get a little tougher next week for Maryland when they welcome Bowling Green to town.

Rutgers 63, Norfolk State 13

Rutgers was expected to dominate their MEAC foe and dominate they did. The Scarlet Knights outgained Norfolk State 539-196 and Leonte Carroo helped blow things open in the 3rd quarter when he caught three touchdown passes.

Mike Leach and the Washington State Cougars come to Piscataway for the return trip of a home-and-home series that Rutgers took the opener of last season.

Illinois 52, Kent State 3

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for the Illinois faithful so it had to feel good to put a beat down on hapless Kent State in the season opener. Wes Lunt threw four touchdowns and Josh Ferguson added another on the ground to lead the Illini in this game that was postponed Friday night due to lightning.

Illinois will look to keep the good times going when Western Illinois take a trip across the state to Champaign on Saturday.

Temple 27, Penn State 10

For a guy hyped to be a possible first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Christian Hackenberg has done a great job of seeming extremely average. Hackenberg was just 11-25 passing for a measly 103 yards with no touchdowns and an interception.

Akeel Lynch scored the Nittany Lions’ only touchdown of the game in the first quarter to make it 10-0, Penn State. Hackenberg led the Nittany Lions to just 180 yards of total offense all game and will need to get a lot better if they want to turn things around against Buffalo this weekend.

BYU 33, Nebraska 28

Playing without Heisman candidate Taysom Hill down the stretch, BYU shocked the whole state of Nebraska by scoring the game-winning touchdown on a last-second Hail Mary. Backup Tanner Mangum found Mitch Mathews at the front of the end zone to complete the Cougars’ comeback.

Tommy Armstrong, Jr. played well for the Cornhuskers in the loss, throwing for 319 yards and three scores. Nebraska will look to get their first win of the season on Saturday when they take on South Alabama.

Indiana 48, Southern Illinois 47

Indiana escaped their season opener against the FCS Salukis by just a single point after a Southern Illinois two-point conversion failed with 18 seconds left in the game. The Salukis were up 32-21 at halftime but squandered their lead before the 3rd quarter was over.

Jordan Howard paved the way for the Hoosiers, rushing for 145 yards and three scores, including the game-winner with 58 seconds left. Indiana looks to start 2-0 when Florida International comes to Bloomington for a night game.

Alabama 35, Wisconsin 17

Wisconsin couldn’t stop Derrick Henry and the Crimson Tide rode their talented back all the way to a blowout win over the Badgers. Henry ran for 147 yards on just 13 carries but still managed to find paydirt three times. Jake Coker was efficient in his first start, going 15-21 for 213 yards and a touchdown pass.

Joel Stave was the more experienced signal caller in this matchup, but his 228 yards and two touchdowns weren’t enough to keep Wisconsin in this game. The Badgers will look to bounce back in Camp Randall against Miami (Ohio).

Marshall 41, Purdue 31

Purdue had plenty of chances to win their season opener on the road in Huntington, leading at halftime and after the 3rd quarter, but turnovers doomed the Boilermakers. Austin Appleby threw four interceptions, including two picked off by Tiquan Lang that were returned for touchdowns. Purdue was driving with less than two minutes in the game when Lang sealed the game for the Thundering Herd.

D.J. Knox ran for 102 yards in the loss and DeAngelo Yancey added 78 yards receiving for the Boilermakers. Purdue is back at home to take on Indiana State in their next matchup.

Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24

Cardale Jones got the start at quarterback. Ezekiel Elliott kicked off his Heisman campaign by taking a handoff 80 yards to the house on his first carry of the game. Braxton Miller looked like, well, Braxton Miller again as he showed off his XBraxOne type moves on his way to being the conference’s offensive player of the week in his first college game in 20 months.

Michael Thomas and J.T. Barrett also got in on the action, hooking up for a 26 yard touchdown pass where Thomas made All-American cornerback Kendall Fuller look like a JV backup. The Buckeyes return home to meet up with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors.

What did you think of the conference’s opening weekend? B1G disappointment? Let us know in the comments below.

ITS THE SEC PAWL!

4161765711_3c9bfa9426

There’s a holiday that is celebrated every Saturday in the south…Gameday. On gameday, women usually wear dresses, while a collared shirt and khakis are the standard for men. It’s southern tradition. It’s the SEC.  It has been said that the best football in the country is played down south and with the success that the Southeastern Conference has had in the last ten years, it would be hard to disagree. A team from the SEC won the natty for seven consecutive years just before the end of the BCS era. There was even a four year stretch from 2009 through 2012 when the BCS national championship didn’t leave the borders of the state of Alabama. Regardless of the team you affiliate yourself with, that’s impressive. The beginning of the SEC’s dominance in college football is usually associated with the arrival of a certain head coach at the University of Florida, which caused the rest of the league to up their game. That coach goes by the name of Urban Meyer.

Luckily, Urban coaches at Ohio State now,  and there is no doubt that he took OSU, from a very good team to legendary status in the last four years. Yet, the perception still remains that the SEC is premier powerhouse conference in college football, which is evident now with 10 of the top 25 teams in the AP poll coming from the conference.

Buuuut let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The polls won’t stay this way. Teams will lose and drop out of the top 25. Therfore, the SEC bias that we hear so much about isn’t much of a worry for teams like Ohio State that are in a great position to win out this regular season. The blue chip teams in the SEC are the only teams from the conference that OSU will realistically have to worry about in the postseason; teams like Bama and Auburn.  So how does Ohio State match up against the best of the Southeastern Conference?

Ohio State vs Alabama

espn-best-student-sections-college-football

Clearly, OSU was the better team last year when they crushed the Crimson Tide’s in New Orleans; but if the two teams should meet again this year in the postseason….I expect the same result. Lane Kiffin obviously  took detailed notes during his little meeting with Tom Herman this summer. I mean, we were already seeing some of OSU’s offensive plays in week 1 of Bama’s game against wisky. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and if anyone will know the weaknesses of Urb’s read option, it’s Urb. Different year, same result.

Ohio State vs Auburn

hi-res-77110865_crop_north

The one team from the SEC who could give the silver bullets fits is Auburn. They are the only team in the country that I could imagine being able to go series for series with Ohio State at the end of the year. They are fast. They score A LOT and they have great coaches. But guess what OSU is also fast and they score a lot too! Not to mention Urb’s coaching staff is the best around. Which means at the end of the day, while it would be a great game, Ohio State is their own toughest opponent and I  don’t see them losing to AU.

The south is all about God, family, football and sweet tea in that order. It’s down home, it’s warm weather,  its momma’s cookin’.  It’s charming, laidback and endearing. People love the south. So when the SEC gets a lot of love in the media and in the polls over the next four months, don’t fret. If Ohio State takes care of business, the natty trophy is their’s to lose at the end of the year.

10 Unnecessary Overreactions to the Buckeye’s Week 1

By: Ryan Black

After a roller coaster first half, the Buckeyes strutted out of Blacksburg feeling more swagger than Rounda Rousey after knocking some chick into next Tuesday.

Ohio State started off with a haymaker and went up by 14 before the scrappy Hokies got up after a 9 count and took a 17-14 lead with some misdirection plays.

There’s nothing better than a hot take after one week. So instead of seeing how the rest of the Buckeyes schedule takes form, let’s get wild and make some unnecessary statements based off the first game.

Here are 10 Unnecessary Overreactions

  1. Virginia Tech is not a Top 25 Team

Hot take: I expected the talent level of both team’s starters to be closer than any other game on the schedule for Ohio State (save MSU) on Monday. Wasn’t really the case.

Tech had solid offensive and defensive lines but the safeties, linebackers, and skill position players were very generic.

  1. Cardale is the starter the rest of the season.

Hot take: I was on #TEAMJONES all offseason and happily resigned myself to JT getting the start.

Either way OSU was in great shape but Cardale can flick the ball downfield 50 yards in a split second and will probably earn himself a 1st round draft grade, something an OSU QB hasn’t seen in decades.

And Dale rushed for 100 yards against a top 5 defense, something he’s not getting enough credit for.

  1. Ohio State should not let other teams dictate their play calling.

Hot take: Urban mentioned in an interview but I don’t care how many guys are on the line of scrimmage,  Zeke Elliott needs more than 3 carries in a half.

He showed with an 80 yard burst that nobody can catch him from behind. I’m taking 2 or 3 negative plays for the high reward he brings.

  1. Virginia Tech’s first two touchdowns were well drawn up but flukish.

Hot take: I’m not too worried (yet) about the two tds the starters gave up on Monday. They were both fool me once type plays that should be easy to clean up…

Oh and those long developing plays will become a little harder against the Bucks this week…

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  1. Sam Hubbard is a future 1st round pick.

Hot take: Ahh, my personal favorite kind of overreaction. Every fanbase think their stud freshmen is a future first rounder.

But only Buckeye fans are right. #Burn

  1. Michael Thomas is the best all around Buckeye receiver since David Boston

Hot take: Uh oh, getting really hot in here now.

Jenkins, Holmes, Smith, Ginn, Gonzales, Sanzenbacher, Posey etc…

Thomas may not have the numbers of these guys (due to so much talent around him) but if these 7 created a love child it would be Thomas.

  1. Mike Weber needs to come back fast.

Hot take: Brionte Dunn and Warren Ball are not elite running backs.

If (god forbid) something does happen to Ezekiel Elliott, the Bucks could be in trouble.

Mike Weber or Curtis Samuel should immediately be moved to the starting role.

  1. Ohio State’s special teams is worrisome.

Hot take: Kickoffs out of bounds, missed field goals, dropped punts… I’ve seen those before.

These 3 things were brutal last year and keeps lesser opponents in games.

  1. The Rookie WR’s weren’t ready.

Hot take: Cambpell, Clark and Mclaurin didn’t make much of an impact and that’s ok. Corey Smith, Dontre Wilson and Jailin Marshall will be back this Saturday.

Keep learning young guns.

  1. Doran Grant will not be missed.

Hot take: One of my all time favorite corners helped win Ohio State the national title last year and his absence left a huge void in the starting lineup this season.

In stepped Gareon Conley, who struggled in limited action last season-He may have looked like the best player on the defense Monday night. A great sign for the rest of the season.

  1. Braxton Miller is Ohio State’s Percy Harvin

Hot take: Every year since Urban arrived at OSU, a player has received this stigma but this year it may finally come to fruition.

Holy hell that boy has some moves.

Week 2: MotSaG B1G Pick ‘em and Tidbits

By: Phil Schoch, Twitter me @osuphil95

Each week in this spot, we analyze college football’s desert numerology and make other-worldly predictions (erratic guesses and hunches) for each B1G match-up as well as a few national spotlight games.

In week one, Pick ‘em & Tidbits sputtered to an uninspiring record of 7-10 versus the spread and 14-3 straight up. I did hit pay dirt with my PM Stukenborg Fearless Prediction of BYU (+7) winning outright against Nebraska. I was 0-4 against the spread in embarrassments featuring a B1G school versus an FCS school.

In case you missed last week’s disclaimer, I will display it again and beg you to not use my picks to bet any form of legal or fantasy tender (bitcoin’ers).

Disclaimer: I am not an oracle, soothsayer or remote viewer. I am not a gamester or gambler. I am not wired into the degenerate underworld lairs of Vegas, Brent Musburger or slicksters promising Triple Platinum Locks of the Week. I pay attention to the numbers and matchups. I examine team motivation factors. BUT PLEASE, DO NOT search out your old freshman dorm pal, Louie the Book, or log into a remote island website to wager your personal assets based on anything written in this weekly post.

Around the B1G…

Saturday, September 12

Miami, O (1-0)

12:00

ESPNU

Vegas says… Bucky -32

At Wisconsin (0-1)

UW looked rather Badgery against Alabama last week. Solid enough to be in the favorite in the B1G West, but not dynamic enough to inspire hopes of a run to the Chosen Four.

Pick ’em says… Badgers, 45-10.

Bowling Green (0-1)

12:00

BTN

Vegas says… Terps -7.5

At Maryland (1-0)

The Terps dressed up in their medieval clown suits and beat up an FCS school last week. Yawn.

Pick ’em says… More atrocious uni’s and a win over a decent MAC squad, 34-28.

Oregon State (1-0)

12:00

BTN

Vegas says…

Weasels -15.5

At Michigan (0-1)

IF I HAVE A FAITH THAT CAN MOVE MOUNTAINS, BUT A LINE THAT CAN NOT RUN BLOCK- I HAVE NOTHING.

Pick ’em says… Why are you fearful? O ye of over-inflated faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the media and the pundits; and there was a great calm-ing victory over the Beavers. M, 27-17.

Buffalo (1-0)

12:00

ESPN2

Vegas says… Lions -21

At Penn State (0-1)

Temple?! 10 sacks?! BWAAAHAHAHA!!! Is James Franklin the answer or simply a hype-man?

Pick ’em says… A little bounce back – PSU, 27-13.

Indiana State (1-0)

12:00

EPSNN

Vegas says… Purdue -13

At Purdue (0-1)

Purd’oh! Purdue was +7 vs Marshall last week. With two minutes and change remaining, the Boilers were up 4. Two minutes later the Boilers were down 10 and all of the betting change flipped to Marshall. D’oh!

Pick ’em says… Boilers showed signs of a competent running game and an okay defense – progress, I guess. Boilers win this crapfest, 24-13.

Western Illinois (1-0)

12:00

BTN

Vegas says… Illini -19

At Illinois (1-0)

You’re Illinois. You’re good once every ten years. Then you bottom out. Fire the crap coach. Hire a crap coach. Rebuild and repeat. Tepper, Turner, Zook, Beckman. Now Bill Cubit is your interim HC. Who are you going after? Your updated and expanded stadium is half-empty and your program has zero buzz. But, you play in the B1G West – you can win this! You have piles of B1G $$$ – now go be somebody! How about Tom Herman, Bob Stoops (not his nutjob brother), Justin Fuente or Steve Addazio?  Hmmm… My consulting fees are quite reasonable, give me a call Chief Illiniwek.

Pick ’em says… Fightin’ Cubits, 48-17.

Hawaii (1-0)

3:30

BTN

Vegas says… Bucks -40

Ohio State (1-0)

What the hell is going on, people?! Can’t we just go back to the days of wearing a dark suit and fedora to the ballgame?

Pick ’em says… Better bring your best filler material BTN crew. Bucks, 63-17.

Washington State (0-1)

3:30

ESPNU

Vegas says… Rutgers -2

Rutgers (1-0)

Washington State was the biggest  loser in week one. The Cougs were -28 versus a non-ranked FCS opponent, Portland State, and lost by 7. Mike Leach will likely walk the plank before the end of October. Rutgers is a mess. Coach attempting to influence a professor. Player arrests and dismissals. The police and AD are hanging around practices. Kyle Flood will likely wash up along the Arthur Kill any day now.

Pick ’em says… I fell asleep on the couch watching this late-nighter last year and missed Rutgers 41-38 come-from-behind victory. I will not make the same mistake this time. Jersey Boys, 45-38.

Minnesota (0-1)

3:30

CBSS

Vegas says… Gophers -6.5

At Colorado State

From 1966 – 2012, legendary Minster (Ohio) resident, Paul ‘P.M.’ Stukenborg (pictured above) posted his weekly sports predictions in the hometown paper, The Community Post. Each week, Pick ’em will make a P.M. Stukenborg Fearless Prediction and call for an underdog to to knock off the favorite.

Pick ’em says… Gophers lack the play makers at QB and WR to keep pace with the high scoring Rams. The ghost of P.M. speaks to me in my sleep – CSU, 34-24.

Eastern Illinois (0-1)

4:00

ESPNN

Vegas says… NW -23.5

At Northwestern (1-0)

Shame on you – Chicago’s B1G Team! Home opener + ranked opponent = 1/2 empty stadium? Keep studying Wildcats, I guess. Apparently youall’ve found something more important in your lives than football. Me? It’s all football and making up words, like the compound contraction – youall’ve.

Pick ’em says… Dyche Stadium will be packed with empty seats. Cats, 38-13.

Iowa (1-0)

4:45

FOX

Vegas says… Hawks -3.5

At Iowa State (1-0)

The CyHawk Trophy used to be an old school classic trophy. Then someone couldn’t leave well enough alone and went and invented a new trophy with an old farmer offering a single mother a bushel of corn for her 8 year old son. Although it was a common practice, seeing their corn-4-child bartering system cast in pewter made Iowans a bit uncomfortable. So they invented another new trophy.

Pick ’em says… Either Paul Rhoads cries about being proud of his team or the Kirk Ferentz for B1G Coach of the Year talk heats up? This is a tough one, but I’ve got to go with the coach who pawned-off his lousy quarterback on Harbaugh. Hawks, 24-20.

Oregon (1-0)

8:00

ABC

Vegas says… Sparty -3.5

At Michigan State (1-0)

This game is going to take forever. I know I’m going to fall asleep watching it. I just hope I wake up in time for the fourth quarter. I think both of these squads are currently ranked too high. Please win, Sparty! Otherwise it will be two straight months of – The Big Ten is weak! Look at Ohio State’s schedule! Please Sparty?

Pick ’em says… Go Green! Go White! Pleeeeease! 45-38.

Florida Int’l (1-0)

8:00

BTN

Vegas says… Hoosiers -7.5

At Indiana (1-0)

Pittbull vs Henry Lee Summer: There are no winners here.

Pick ’em says… I wish I had a girl who walked like that! IU, 38-31.

South Alabama (1-0)

8:00

BTN

Vegas says…

Huskers -27.5

At Nebraska (0-1)

Say, is that a corncob in your pocket? Or are you just- ok, good, that is a corncob in your pocket.

Pick ’em says… Huskers, 45-17.

National spotlight games…

Oklahoma (1-0)

6:00

ESPN

Vegas says… OU -1

At Tennessee (1-0)

General consensus is that Oklahoma is trending down and Tennessee is on the rise. Whose rise or demise has been greatly exaggerated?

Pick ’em says… Vols at home, 38-31.

LSU (1-0)

9:15

ESPN

Vegas says… T’eye-gahz -5

At Mississippi State (1-0)

How ugly will this game be? Just look – that ugly. Although ESPN will try to make you believe it’s phenomenal defense.

Pick ’em says…  Don’t watch! Don’t allow yourself to be brainwashed! LSU, 20-13.

JT? Cardale? Braxton. Miller.

Amid all the off season speculation on who would be the starting quarterback for the Buckeyes, the one that relinquished that throne to become a hybrid player proved to be the X-factor in the game.

Miller led the Buckeyes offensively with two touchdowns, one on the ground and one from a strike from starting quarterback Cardale Jones.

Despite reports that Meyer would tell both Barrett and Jones who the starter would be this past Saturday, neither guy knew who the starter was until seconds before the first play. Both guys were on the field taking snaps and throwing just as if they each were the starter, but Meyer, shocking to most including myself, picked Jones. If I had asked 100 random people outside the stadium who they thought would have been the starter, 90 of them would have said JT.

After a rather comparatively underwhelming noise level to Enter Sandman from the Orange Effect crowd of 65,632, Ohio State’s offense was on fire in the first quarter. The first touchdown of the game went to Curtis Samuel who caught a 24 yard pass from Jones despite being interfered with. After a defensive stop, Ezekiel Elliott gave Buckeye Nation an encore of his infamous run through Alabama in last year’s Sugar Bowl with what I like to call – 80 yards through the heart of The Burg.

After jumping out to a quick two touchdown advantage, mistakes plagued the Buckeyes thus opening the door for the Hokies who scored 17 unanswered points. The Bucks turned the ball over twice, one from Elliott bobbling the punt and the other from a tipped pass from Jones.

Both Hokie touchdowns came on their signature play where everyone moves one direction while one guy is released on the opposite side of the field. First it was Sam Rogers who ran 51 yards down the sideline for the score, and the second was to Ryan Malleck from the one yard line.

Trailing 17-14 at the half, the Buckeyes came out with a point to prove. The third quarter belonged to the most dynamic and athletic player in the country, Braxton Miller, who caught a 54 yard touchdown pass from Jones and beating the last defender with his legs.

On the next possession came the highlight of the night. Miller, channeled his supernatural Madden abilities, by pressing the circle (O) button on the controller and waking up the college football world to what they missed last season.

After dominating the second half, Barrett made an appearance and threw a gorgeous ball to Michael Thomas, who put All-American cornerback Kendall Fuller on skates with a stutter and go move:

But above all else, this was a team effort. From having a team captain that had to take the blow of having to sit on the bench, to a selfless and sacrificial Braxton Miller, the Buckeyes could not have handled this quarterback conundrum any better than they did. All of the hype and questions surrounding this team have been put to rest, and the rest of the college football world knows that the Buckeyes mean business.

Though a couple of mistakes were made, the team played as Meyer preaches – nine units strong. The slobs did not allow a single sack all game long, and they helped the offense compile 360 yards on the ground. The Silver Bullets made an impressive showing as well as they managed to force two turnovers all without defensive end Joey Bosa.

Scarily enough, this team will be returning Bosa and three other dynamic playmakers into the mix next week in the home opener against Hawaii. I weep at the thought of envisioning how Hawaii’s defensive coordinator is going to stop an offense like this. But to whoever it is that I owe that thought, I have one thing to say to you – Good luck.

From the moment Meyer accepted the job to coach at The Ohio State University, he has gotten every player to buy into his team mentality – of being committed to the team, for the team, and for the best interest of the team. And that is what championship teams are made of.

Last but not least, selfie with King Jones!

A Look Around the Country

Some Teams Impress, Others Do Not in Week One

Welcome to my weekly column, A Look Around the Country, which will highlight notable games from the week before and week ahead as well as the Heisman and Playoff race. Special features include an in-depth look at the Buckeyes as well as a Michigan update, mainly for folks bask in their misfortunes. As always, feel free to comment with your own opinions and I hope you enjoy!

It was an exciting first week back with a Hail Mary pass that put BYU on top of Nebraska in the first edition of the Mike Riley era while teams like Ohio State and Alabama rolled to big wins in primetime. Notre Dame and UCLA certainly looked impressive but TCU and Michigan sure didn’t. Anyway, it sure is great to have football back.

Notable Games Last Week

TCU 23, Minnesota 17

In a game that was much closer than the experts predicted (I was not one of those experts,) the Horned Frogs were able to escape a close one in Minneapolis. Trevone Boykin was not overly impressive and neither was the rest of Gary Patterson’s squad. They need to improve or else they’ll drop one and be out of the playoff picture again.

Northwestern 16, Stanford 6

The Wildcats were able to pull off the upset of the 21st ranked Stanford, which should be huge for their confidence, looking forward into the season. With the Big Ten West being wide open, anything can happen and that includes Northwestern being in the hunt to head to Indy in December. Stanford’s loss is disappointing but the Pac 12 is as wide open as any conference so they are not out of it yet.

Texas A&M 38, Arizona State 17

The Aggies were very impressive in their win over the Sun Devils and they now, deservedly so, are ranked in the AP Top 25. I thought A&M would take another step backwards while ASU would take a step forward and really contest for the Pac 12 crown. At this point (even though anything can happen- see 2014 Ohio State), it appears I was wrong.

Notre Dame 38, Texas 3

The Irish sure looked impressive in their romp of Charlie Strong’s Longhorns but the loss of RB Tarean Folston for the season hurts their playoff chances. Other than that, Notre Dame looked as impressive as any team I watched this weekend and their ranking below reflects that. Texas has a long way to go.

Alabama 35, Wisconsin 17

Despite Alabama’s big win, I do not think they are deserving of their high ranking. Derrick Henry was very impressive (he shot up in my Heisman poll) but the mediocrity of QB Jake Coker keeps me from having more respect for them. Wisconsin has taken a step back with the loss of Melvin Gordon but Paul Chryst will have them back near the top of the Big Ten West.

Ohio State 42, Virginia Tech 24

We finally have our answer to the QB race to end all QB races: Cardale Jones. The offense seems to be clicking in mid-season form (even without three of their best receivers) and the Silver Bullets picked up where they left off. I almost forgot: Braxton Miller is a freak of nature athlete and will only get better. The Buckeyes don’t have that tough of a schedule (get used to hearing that all season) and they really won’t get tested again until Michigan State in late November. The Buckeyes play Hawaii on Saturday. RIP to the Rainbow Warriors.

Big Games this Week

Oklahoma at Tennessee

These two teams which are in serious transition this season, will battle it out in Knoxville. I believe that both teams are overrated at this point and would be surprised if either made a New Year’s Day Bowl. Fifteen years ago this would have been the game of the year.

Saturday, September 12 at 6pm on ESPN

Oregon at Michigan State

The Sparties has been waiting a year to avenge their loss in Eugene from last season and I think they will get revenge. Connor Cook will play great but the dominant offensive and defensive lines of Michigan State will manhandle Oregon. I wouldn’t be surprised if this gets out of hand in the second half. The nation will be put on notice after watching this one.

Saturday, September 12 at 8pm on ABC

LSU at Mississippi State

Mississippi State finds themselves back in the Top 25 (not sure why) but they will be playing a pretty talented Tiger team with Leonard Fournette leading the charge. In the SEC, anything can happen so expect a competitive game. This one just begins to shape the SEC playoff picture.

Saturday, September 12 at 9:15pm on ESPN

Michigan Update

Jim Harbaugh’s much anticipated opener didn’t go exactly as planned for Wolverine fans. To be fair, Michigan didn’t look half bad and will improve as the season wears on but the quarterback situation is dire. If they get that fixed, they’ll turn some heads. Michigan plays Oregon State this week.

Heisman Watch

Trevone Boykin, TCU: E

Cardale Jones, Ohio State: +

Derrick Henry, Alabama: +
