B1G Weekly Recap: Iowa Survives in Bloomington, Nebraska Stuns Michigan State

Iowa took another step towards an undefeated regular season and a trip to Indianapolis in early December (it can be more fun than it sounds – I promise) when they held on to beat Indiana. Penn State lost any chance it had of representing the Big Ten East in Indy when they dropped a tight affair at Northwestern. Nebraska knocked off Michigan State late to end any chance of a three-way tie at the top of the East.

Northwestern 23, Penn State 21

It looked like Northwestern was going to run away with one early, as the Wildcats jumped out to a 20-7 halftime lead. Saquon Barkley’s second touchdown of the day gave the Nittany Lions the 21-20 lead early in the 4th quarter which is where it would stay until Jack Mitchell won the game for Northwestern with a 35-yard field goal with :09 on the clock.

The running backs were the stars of the show, with Barkley racking up 120 yards to go with his pair of touchdowns and Justin Jackson shouldering the load with 186 yards for a Clayton Thorson-less Wildcat bunch. Penn State gets a week off to heal and rest up for a home game against the Wolverines and Northwestern will take on Purdue in Evanston.

Iowa 35, Indiana 27

When Griffin Oakes hit a 28-yard field goal to cut the Hawkeye lead to 21-20 early in the 4th quarter, it looked like the Hoosiers’ upset bid might be in the cards. However, Iowa took the punch and responded with one of their own in the form of a 9 play, 75 yard drive that culminated in LeShun Daniels Jr.’s second rushing touchdown of the day.

C.J. Beathard combined with George Kittle on the Hawkeyes’ next drive from 10 yards out to put the game out of reach. Jordan Howard was impressive yet again for Indiana, rushing for 174 yards on 22 carries that included two 2nd quarter touchdowns that gave the Hoosiers the lead. Iowa heads back home to face Minnesota and Indiana will welcome some visitors from Ann Arbor.

Michigan 49, Rutgers 16

Another day, another blowout suffered by the Rutgers football program. Once again, the Scarlet Knights proved just how inept they can be, scoring no offensive touchdowns and finishing the day with 225 yards of total offense. Janarion Grant took a kickoff back to the house that was the only trip to the end zone on the day for Rutgers.

The Wolverines easily outmatched their opponents, thanks in large part to a solid outing from QB Jake Rudock. Rudock had his best game, statistically, as a Wolverine, completing 18-25 for 337 yards and two touchdowns. Rutgers needs to win out to gain bowl eligibility and they’ll start that road next week at home against Nebraska while the Wolverines will be on the road as they head to Bloomington.

Nebraska 39, Michigan State 38

In the upset of the day, Michigan State went in to Lincoln and left with their tails between their legs. Tommy Armstrong Jr. took Nebraska 91 yards in just 38 seconds to win the game with a controversial touchdown pass from 30 yards out to Brandon Reilly. Armstrong finished the day with 320 yards passing and two touchdowns each on the ground and through the air.

Connor Cook did a lot for the Spartans, throwing for 335 yards and four scores, but it wasn’t enough to keep Michigan State undefeated. Sparty will look to get back on track on home turf next week against Maryland and Nebraska will head to Rutgers with bowl eligibility still a possibility.

Ohio State 28, Minnesota 14

It wasn’t always the prettiest game for Ohio State, but Cardale Jones stepped up in J.T. Barrett’s absence and got the job done. A win is a win and that’s all Ohio State needs to keep doing to earn another spot in the College Football Playoff. Jones finished the night with 187 yards passing and a touchdown pass to Michael Thomas. Jones also sealed the victory late in the 4th with a 38 yard touchdown run.

Ezekiel Elliott hit the 100-yard plateau for the 14th straight game for the Buckeyes while K.J. Maye was the star for the Golden Gophers, hauling in 10 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown. Minnesota will hit the road against another undefeated team next week in Iowa while the Buckeyes will head to Champaign to battle for the Illibuck.

How are you handicapping the B1G East race now that Michigan State has fallen? Will Iowa take care of business and continue their stranglehold on the B1G West against Minnesota?

Defending Champions Shouldn’t Receive Special Treatment in Rankings

Ohio State isn’t one of the two or three best college football teams in the country. At least, they haven’t actually played like it for the majority of the season.

Putting all my Buckeye Bias aside – and it certainly isn’t the fault of the team – but Ohio State has benefited through its ninth game in 2015 from its accomplishments in the 2014 season and preseason expectations. They haven’t really done much to earn a top-3 ranking. Similar to the advantage that Florida State was able to enjoy throughout the entire 2014 regular season, a defending champion with a lot of returning talent is given the benefit of the doubt regarding their schedule and outcomes of games. Fans and analysts, alike, are quick to say, “Until they lose, they’re No. 1.”

I know Ohio State is annually berated and ridiculed for its weak schedule – especially this year – by media talking heads and fans of other schools around the country, but the argument is legitimate. Based on the competition that Ohio State has faced thus far in 2015, and the way they’ve seemingly struggled to pull out their wins, OSU hasn’t been the best team in the country. They’ve just been blessed with a fortunate situation where everyone knows how talented their roster is and entered the season unanimously ranked No.1, so people feel obliged to prevent them from dropping that far in the polls.

But is that fair? Why were we held to a higher standard than Michigan State for the first nine weeks of the season (before MSU blew a 12-point lead in the final two minutes against Nebraska)? Up until this past weekend, it seemed as if OSU and MSU were experiencing vastly similar seasons – winning all their games, despite looking sloppy while doing it. Heck, the Spartans had a big home win over then-awesome Oregon – which looked much better than our best win of the season (Virginia Tech). But, despite doing nothing but winning, MSU saw themselves regularly drop in the rankings from No. 2 to No. 7. But Ohio State held strong in the No. 1 spot despite looking just as unimpressive. Why?

At the end of the day, the bottom line in football is winning. I recognize that. But college football has proven to be different than the NFL over the years. Style points matter and “statements” need to be made. I’m no expert, but I’m confident that the Buckeyes would not have made the 2014 playoffs if they had beaten Wisconsin 21-14 in the Big Ten championship game instead of the 59-0 drubbing that took place. Ohio State earned its way in, while Florida State sleepwalked through an undefeated yet uninspiring regular season. Hindsight is always 20/20, but following the 59-20 beat-down at the hands of Oregon in last year’s semifinal round, the argument that TCU should’ve qualified for the playoffs was much stronger – albeit they should’ve been included over Florida State, not Ohio State. That was never a possibility, however, because the defending champion Seminoles with returning talent were held to the same unfair higher standard.

Look, Ohio State is capable of beating any team in the country – Clemson, Alabama, Michigan, whomever. But this year’s team shouldn’t be heralded for closer-than-it-should-have-been wins and receive special treatment because of last year’s national title. Because of the precedent that has existed in college football where wins aren’t the same as impressive wins, that evaluation should hold firm across the board – without playing favorites to defending champions.

5 B1G Observations: Week 10

gamsimpsonsB1G

I hope you all enjoyed another football performance that leaves the fans of the Scarlet and Gray guessing.  Many pundits like to believe that the reinsertion of J.T. Barrett as the starting quarterback will right the ship and set this team sailing toward another undefeated regular season and a good shot to make it into the College Football Playoffs.  Consider me one of those believers.

I’m very pleased with the defensive effort against Minnesota.  Aside from a few breakaway plays in the second half, the Silver Bullets looked to be operating on all cylinders.  Holding a team with only one threat at wide receiver to 33 yards rushing?  I’ll take that all day long.

#1: The let-down in Lincoln

For the first time this year I am writing about a crushing loss in the final seconds of a Nebraska game and the Cornhuskers are the benefactors.  One can argue that Michigan State lost the game more than Nebraska won it.  I’m more concerned about what it does for Ohio State’s strength of schedule.  Thanks a lot for this gem, Connor Cook.

#2: Iowa proves it can win ugly

Jordan Howard rushed for two touchdowns against the Hawkeyes, one who would play online video games during his whole life, the game he played the most was Diablo 3 and he even mentioned once talking about Elitist Gaming Diablo 3 a company that would deliver a professional career for him in online gaming; however he went on marking only the second and third rushing touchdowns allowed by Iowa all season.  I’m thinking #15 will be turning that statistic on its head in Indianapolis. I always like to let gamers know that there is a mice for big hands just in case they need one.

#3: Rutgers gets romped

Jake Rudock finally lived up to his preseason hype and put some stats on the scorecard for Michigan.  But his immobility makes me salivate at the image of Joey Bosa and Adolphus Washington sending him crashing to the turf.  17 days…

#4: Ohio State drops to third

Could we have asked for a bigger favor than this?  What is more dangerous than Urban Meyer coaching an underdog?  Not much.  Keep us at third or below CFP Committee.  Thank you very much.

#5: Zeke keeps the century streak rolling

I was a little worried that the defense would do a good enough job to secure a blow-out and send Zeke to the bench early in this one.  But alas he was on the field until the final whistle and kept his remarkable consistent streak going at 14 games.  Take note, Heisman voters.

Bonus Video: GREAT SCOTT, OSUMB!!!

I felt obliged to throw this one in here.  TBDBITL got up to 88 miles per hour and knocked this one Back to the Future.

All Things Buckeyes

The Return of the King:

This was the week that King Cardale Jones returned as the starter of the reigning National Champions Buckeyes.  This was also the week that Captain J.T. Barrett had to sit out after his OVI fiasco from last week.  The Minnesota game was interesting and as expected the Buckeyes pulled away in the second half while Jones is at the helm.  I am not a Cardale hater by any means.  I mean, I have no need or want to because he brought us the National Championship, but I also call it like I see it.  Without the reliable deep threat, he cannot spread defenses out.  The lack of mobility is evident and he just flat out struggles in the offense.  With that being said he also seems to be distracted for some reason.  I don’t know what it is and I cannot put my finger on it, but he looks like something is bothering him.  It isn’t affecting his production on the field, but as a fan, it is getting annoying.  I for one know that the Buckeyes should be destroying everyone they have played, but with Jones as the starter, the offense as a whole plays to the level of their opponents.  It has to stop.  Please make it stop.

Recruiting Battles:

Well it finally happened!  The Kareem Walker drama finally revealed it’s ugly head.  At last it is finally over.  The “I am committed, but I will continue to take my visits” drama is finally over!  Walker would’ve been a nice addition to this years class but he is obviously scared of competition.  I mean we have Mike Weber from last years class and Antonio Williams from this years class.  We sorely needed another slot to maximize the talent pool as well so good luck young man!  I am not bitter, we needed an opening and we can now focus on recruiting more talent.

With the extra slot, we have 3-5 more spots and it will be an interesting couple of months prior to National Signing Day.  I am hoping that we snag a couple of blue-chippers that will contribute as soon as they arrive on campus.  The targets that are still high up on the board are Michigan Linebacker Daelin Hayes, California Linebacker Mique Juarez.   Hayes was present during the Minnesota – Ohio State game and he came away impressed.  Certainly an interesting turn of events, but I do not expect anything concrete.  Although it is well known that the Buckeyes want to add one more linebacker to this years class, but I won’t be a bit surprised if they take both of the ones mentioned above.

The Buckeyes are also looking to add a top-tier Defensive Tackle and they have a shot at a few of them.  Louisiana’s own Rashard Lawrence, Georgia’s Antwuan Jackson, Texas’ Chris Daniels and North Carolina’s Dexter Lawrence.  I believe with the recent Walker defection, it pretty much puts Rashan Gary out of the Buckeyes grasp.

The Buckeyes are also looking at bringing in another Wide Receiver to pair with Austin Mack and a pair of Florida products in Binjimen Victor and Nate Craig-Meyers.  Binjimen Victor is the one who is most likely Buckeye-bound but with recruiting, you never now.  Craig-Meyers would be a nice addition but he is currently trending toward Gainesville.

Lastly, the Buckeyes are still working to find 1-2 more Defensive Backs.  Georgia’s Nigel Warrior, Pennsylvania’s Damar Hamlin and New Jersey’s Jordan Fuller are at the top of the Buckeye’s wish list.  They are all playmakers and blue-chip prospects and it would be a welcomed addition to the class.  They both are still up in the air and now it is just a waiting game.

Braxton Boo Boo:

This past week, Braxton Miller suffered an injury against Minnesota.  A potential concussion to be exact.  Coach Meyer said that Braxton just got the wind knocked out of him and now it is just a waiting game to see what the exact injury is or was.  Coach Meyer said that he looked to be fine after they dressed down.  Hopefully he comes back and hopefully the injury in question wasn’t that bad.

Poor Spartans:

Did you see the Spartans this past weekend?  I for one think that caught a bad break.  The receiver was not forced out of bounds.  To make it worst, they lost to a lucky Nebraska team who are flat out terrible this year.  Ohio State better trounce Illinois prior to their showdown with a potentially angry Spartans team who were robbed of a victory.

What Did We Learn In Week 10

As we get into the swing of things in November, teams really start to show their true colors as to who we can expect them to become in December. Let’s take a look at some of the big games this weekend and figure out what we can take away from them!

We might as well start with the best damn team in the land-  the Ohio State Buckeyes v. Minnesota. Let’s be honest, after this game most of us were just happy that we get JT back next week. Thankfully Cardale had one of his better games that he has played this year but the offense still looked completely out of sorts compared to how silky smooth they have looked with JT. Bottom line is the defense is getting better and better every week and once JT gets back the Buckeyes could be scary to any other team in the nation.

The biggest game to everyone else in the nation (that isn’t a buckeye fan) was the Alabama v. LSU game.  In this game it was blatantly obvious that Alabama coach Nick Saban was going to do everything in his power to make sure one of the best backs in the nation ,Leonard Fournette, did not beat them. In fact Fournette ,who has rushed for 150 yards every game this year, rushed for less than 40 against Bama. On the other side of the field Derek Henry ran the ball very well allowing Alabama to impose their will on LSU.  We can complain all we want about Alabama being in the top four for the college football playoff, but they really do look like one of the best teams in the nation right now.

Another game that really made a statement this weekend was the TCU V. Oklahoma State game. This game eventually told us 2 things, first TCU was overrated and OSU was underrated. TCU FINALLY played a team that others would consider an actual threat and that threat turned out to be to much for the Horn Frogs. The problem for TCU is that with such a weak schedule their chances of making it to the playoff are all but gone. Oaklahoma State on the other hand did a lot for their national perception, but the next few weeks in the Big 12 is going to be extremely interesting!

Finally the last big game that (let’s be honest) should not have been a big game at all was the Michigan State V. Nebraska game. Coming into the game Michigan Sate was undefeated and headed for a massive showdown with Ohio State in 2 weeks. All of that was derailed by a underwhelming Nebraska team, a team that has been in multiple close games this season but just couldn’t find a way to win most of them. That all changed this weekend. Even though there was a controversial call at the end of the game all that matters is the score board.

At the end of the day as a buckeye fan you would have hoped for that MSU team to stay inbeaten simply because it would help us look even better if we beat them. All in all the Buckeyes are still undefeated, can’t ask for much more than that! Go Bucks!

The Rivals, Part XI: Returns

Ohio State returns to action tonight against the Minnesota Gophers, fresh off a heart-breaking (and somewhat controversial) loss to Michigan. As you know, the Buckeyes will be without newly-installed starting quarterback J.T. Barrett, who is serving a suspension stemming from an OVI citation. There’s no need to sermonize about Barrett’s mistake or Urban Meyer’s handling of the situation; I’ll leave that to the professionally sanctimonious click-baiters.

What is notable about Barrett’s unavailability is that it brings a unique intangible to the game. Cardale Jones returns as the starting QB, and it will be the first time since last year’s National Championship game that he does so without the potential of being pulled for performance issues. It will be interesting to see if this dynamic affects Jones’ psyche, and if his play remains as uneven as it was earlier this season or if we see a return to something more like last year’s Big Ten Championship Game.

After a string of dominant wins, Michigan’s last two games have gone down to the wire in the most dramatic ways. Last week’s win over Minnesota was aided by a called-back touchdown and an uncalled neutral zone infraction that would have given the Gophers the ball about as close to the goal line as possible without actually putting it in the end zone for them. Ultimately, poor end-of-game clock management was the main culprit for Minnesota, and the Wolverines dodged a bullet that would have effectively put them out of the Big Ten title race.

Braxton Miller will return to the quarterback position tonight, having been installed as the backup in Barrett’s absence. There has been a purposeful silence from Meyer and the team about the nature of Miller’s role in this game, which has many speculating that he may actually throw a true pass (he has executed the fly sweep “pop pass” which is little more than a handoff) for the first time in nearly two years.

As for Jim Harbaugh, he seems content to continue to minimize the impact of his quarterback in either direction. Since the opening loss to Utah, Jake Rudock has not thrown for more than 200 yards in any game. He also has only thrown 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. It’s easy to argue that this has been a good thing for Michigan, as they’ve won six of those seven games, with the only loss coming on the fluke play of the season. Still, I firmly believe that at some point this season, the Wolverines are going to need Rudock to win a game for them, and I’m not sure he’ll be prepared when the time comes. That time probably won’t be today, as Michigan returns to the Big House to take on a Rutgers team who lost its last two games by a combined score of 97-17.

Ohio State welcomes the Gophers to the Shoe, and the Buckeyes haven’t lost following a bye week since a 2005 road game at Penn State. The last time OSU dropped a home game after a bye was to the 1990 USC Trojans. Despite the clock issues late in the game, Minnesota’s interim head coach Tracy Claeys performed admirably in his first stint as a college head coach, and he will really be put to the test tonight.

Buckeyes ‘Gopher’ A Hot Start To November Stretch Run

Quite a relaxing bye week, huh, Buckeye fans? To be honest, I truly do not have the energy to go over everything related to J.T. Barrett’s suspension, after Shannon Sommers (@smsommers84) covered it so extensively on this week’s Men of the Scarlet and Gray podcast.

Loyal and long-time followers of Men of the Scarlet and Gray may recall how I wrote about Minnesota not necessarily being a pushover, back before the season started. It looks like Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer is of the same mindset, with the comments made after one of this week’s practices…

Say what you will about Minnesota lacking explosive speed at the skill positions. I will merely remind Ohio State fans that Minnesota is well-coached and fundamentally sound, despite the calamitous ending to the game against That Team Up North on October 31st.

Below are three critical areas I will be keeping an eye on as Ohio State and Minnesota kick off in Ohio Stadium at 8pm EST on ABC ~

1. How will Cardale Jones play as the unquestioned starter at quarterback – Last season, Cardale Jones was thrust into play, due to the season-ending injury to J.T. Barrett. With Barrett completely out of the picture, the team rallied around Jones…you know how that wonderful script ended. In a similar fashion, with Barrett suspended, will Jones go back to his carefree approach to playing quarterback that served him, and the Buckeyes, so well at the end of the 2014 season? And if Jones does play that way, will it be enough to earn Jones the starting quarterback job back from Barrett for the remainder of the 2015 season?

2. Braxton Miller as the backup/red zone quarterback – Ohio State fans became weary with Jones unable to lead the Buckeyes to touchdowns earlier this season. J.T. Barrett regained the starting quarterback position with his ability to fully execute the offense. With Barrett suspended, Coach Meyer has stated a willingness to use former quarterback and current wide receiver Braxton Miller as the backup, and possibly, the red zone quarterback. Will Miller be able to throw the ball, or is Miller’s shoulder still injured enough to preclude Miller from truly being more than just a wildcat quarterback?

3. Minnesota’s Confidence – Losing Jerry Kill to an unexpected retirement was bad enough. Losing a home game, in the manner and fashion that Minnesota did, truly defined the expression of “adding insult to injury”. How will the Golden Gophers respond after such a double dose of disappointment?

Prediction: Look for Cardale Jones to come out of the gate, playing with a confidence level that Ohio State fans have not seen this season. Even with Minnesota putting eight men in the box to stop Ezekiel Elliott, look for Jones to capitalize on some deep passes for big gains. Minnesota will put up a good fight, but I like Ohio State to pull away in the second half. I have it Ohio State 35, Minnesota 14.

2016 NFL Draft: Buckeye Senior Predictions

Obviously there is still a lot of football to still be played in this season (hopefully 7 more games), but is it ever too early to predict where, or if, some Buckeyes are drafted in the upcoming NFL Draft? In my opinion; no. So, we’re going to look and predict what round some of the seniors will be picked.

Anybody that follows college football, not just Ohio State fans, can easily recognize that this 2015 Ohio State team is stacked with talent. There has been some rumbling, and hope from some people, that this team could break the record for the most first round draft picks in any given draft (the Miami Hurricanes hold the record for 6 in the 2004 draft).

Let’s take a look at the seniors:

Taylor Decker - Taylor is a 6’8″ 315 lb left tackle for the Buckeyes. He is the only 3 year starter of the group, and he is one of two offensive linemen to be elected as a captain this year. In his first year starting, he played at right tackle, and according to Ed Warinner, he was playing close to the best out of the whole group. The next year he moved to left tackle where he was entrusted to be an anchor for the O-Line. After a rough start, he and the group pulled it together to put up a very dominant post-season to lead the team to a championship. This year is obviously his last year as a Buckeye, and again they’ve started rough, but Taylor and the left side of the line have been depended upon to pound the ball.

At 6’8″, Taylor has great height to play tackle at the next level. Often times, though, his height causes him to get poor leverage, and there are some concerns over his knee bend. He’s also been noted to jump, and false start on plays because of over anticipation, but that’s not a huge problem. Overall, Taylor is a very solid player, and after all, he is the 3rd rated offensive tackle (so far) in this draft class.

Prediction - Late 1st or 2nd round

Braxton Miller - Everybody knows Braxton Miller. Elite QB turned WR. Arguably the best athlete in the nation. There were some questions about him as an NFL player throughout his Buckeye career, but he seems to have found a position where he can definitely be successful in the NFL. People weren’t sure how Braxton would look at his new position, but 8 games through the season, he looks pretty familiar with it.

“You look at Braxton, I mean, Braxton, we watch him on film, he’s playing wide receiver right now like he’s played wide receiver his entire life.” said Penn State coach, James Franklin.

Urban Meyer was also determined to get Braxton to the next level. “I’m not ashamed to say that we owe Braxton Miller.” said Urban who also admitted that they promised Braxton that they would make him a complete wide receiver. “I’m so proud of him. He’s practiced his tail off.”

Although Braxton is as gifted an athlete that you’ll ever find, he isn’t as polished as many of the wide receivers that are entering the draft. Because of his athletic ability and the freak plays that he often displays, he will still be drafted relatively early.

Prediction – 3rd round.

Joshua Perry - Josh is a captain, and is a very mature leader of the Silver Bullets. He often gets overlooked because of the electric plays from Darron Lee, Vonn Bell, and Joey Bosa, but Josh is a consistent rock for the defense. Last year Josh quietly led the team with 124 tackles. It’s easy to see how important he is to the defense if you watch how much the defense struggled against Penn State once Josh went out with a sprained ankle.

At 6’4″ 254 lbs, Josh can do several things on the football field. He still has the speed to run around at linebacker, but he has the size and the strength to play defensive end and rush the passer if needed. Being the team player that he is, Josh practiced at DE for the Virginia Tech game in case the “replacements” couldn’t adequately fill in for the suspended Joey Bosa.

Again, Josh has great size and strength to be a great player that has a long career in the NFL. He gets over-looked because of his flashy peers, but he is really starting to come on the scene for scouts.

Prediction – I’ll get crazy and say late 1st, but he’ll probably be mid-2nd.

Adolphus Washington - The 6’4″ 295 lb senior from Taft High School has burst on to the scene in his final collegiate season. Hopes were high for his career because of his big, 5-star status, but things really didn’t come together until last year. During his sophomore campaign, he got injured, and young man named Joey Bosa replaced him, and the rest is history at that position. But then, as Adolphus kept getting bigger, he moved into more of a defensive tackle mold.

Last season, he had a pretty solid season playing NG beside Michael Bennett. Now with Michael gone, he moves to a more natural position at 3-tech. Because of that, his stats are much better, and his skills are illustrated much better. “Top-5 pick.” said Raekwon McMillan when talking about him.

Urban is known for putting athletes closer to the ball/LOS on defense, and he’s done just that with Adolphus. He has great quickness, and does a great job of getting off of blocks.

Prediction – 1st round

Nick Vannett - The 6’6″ 260 lb senior TE hasn’t quite lived up to the expectations this year. After fellow TE, Jeff Heuerman was drafted 3rd round to the Broncos, people expected Nick Vannett to step up and put up numbers that haven’t recently been seen in Urban’s offense. Often times, the TEs are just used as glorified offensive linemen, but they don’t (publicly) complain. The scouts recognize Nick’s selflessness and ability to block.

Nick has played a lot of snaps this year because of the injuries to 5 wide receivers, but he still hasn’t had much receiving production. Nick has the size and the speed to be a solid player in the NFL, and could be a quarterbacks dream. In the NFL, teams would utilize him much more outside and in the slot, and he would be a great weapon for any QB. Still, I don’t think he will be drafted as highly as Jeff Heuerman was last year.

Prediction – 4th round.

Tommy Schutt - The 6’2″ 290 lb defensive tackle from Illinois is a first year starter for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Many considered Tommy as a bust considering his status coming out of high-school, and his lack of production since arriving on campus. Injuries have also haunted his career.

Now, as a starter, he is playing the position that Adolphus Washington manned last year, nose guard. At that position, it is extremely difficult to put up any numbers considering how much you get double teamed. The main job of that person is to fill gaps and open up room for other defenders to make the tackle.

After a solid start to the season, Tommy again was flagged with an injury. He broke his wrist and is out for several weeks. Although the NFL teams don’t have much to go off with for Tommy, I believe they will see the potential. Based on Mike Bennett going in the 6th round last year, logic would say that Tommy Schutt will not get drafted. I will go on a limb and say that he will.

Prediction – 7th round

Although I wish every Ohio State player, or even starter could be drafted, they just can’t. Out of the seniors, we left out several notable players like Chase Farris, Jacoby Boren, Corey Smith, Bryce Haynes, Camren Williams, and Joel Hale. Most of, if not all of these guys will still go on and join an NFL team as an undrafted FA, but most of those guys are cut shortly after (Andrew Norwell and Philly Brown both made the Panthers as undrafted FAs, though). It’s hard to make the NFL after going undrafted, but it certainly is still possible.

Next week we will take a look at the underclassmen, and potential guys who could leave early, and predict when they will be picked.

A Look Around The Country

Welcome back to my weekly column, A Look Around the Country. I’m highlighting notable games from the previous week, the week ahead and of course, the Heisman and Playoff race. Special features include an in-depth look at the Ohio State and a Michigan update, mainly for folks to bask in their misfortunes. Feel free to comment with your opinions, I hope you enjoy!

Notable Games Last Week

Florida 27, Georgia 3

The Gators will be on their way to the SEC Championship game soon due to the sorry East Division. Mark Richt will likely get booted out of Athens by the end of the season adding to the already growing list of schools looking for a new coach. If Florida is able to win out including at the Georgia Dome, they will be in the playoffs.

Big Games This Week

Florida State at Clemson

Fresh off their brand new Number 1 playoff ranking, Clemson will look to avoid the upset as the Seminoles come to town. The Tigers control their own destiny at this point and with their remaining schedule, they have arguably the easiest remaining road to the playoff. But with Florida State, you never know what will happen so expect a good one.

Saturday, November 7 at 3:30pm on ABC

TCU at Oklahoma State

The Battle of the Unbeatens will take place in Stillwater and if you like points, then you will like this game. Both teams have the talent to put up 70+ points per game and with the defenses that will be featured; I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens. Either way, one of these team’s playoff bubble will burst on Saturday.

LSU at Alabama

We can hate on the SEC all we want, but I have been looking forward to this game all season. Alabama will have the upper hand since it is being played at Bryant-Denny but with LSU wielding the man-child, Leonard Fournette, I just cannot see the Bayou Bengals losing this one. In any case, the winner of this game sets themselves up for a clear playoff berth as long as they win out. The winner likely plays Florida in the SEC Title game and I don’t see either team losing to the Gators. Buckle up for a great one.

Minnesota at Ohio State

The big storyline for this game will be the absence of J.T. Barrett because of his suspension for OVI. Cardale Jones will get to start but many speculate that Braxton Miller will see reps at QB. That will remain to be seen but the offense will still be focused around feeding Zeke and getting the ball to our playmakers out in space. I expect the Buckeyes to do that and they will pull away early in the second quarter. The defense is still playing great behind the play of Raekwon McMillan and Joey Bosa, among others. After this bout with the Golden Gophers, all that remains for the regular season is the Illibuck and 2 Michigans.

Michigan Update

The Wolverines were able to bounce back with a win over Minnesota even though they probably should have lost if it were not for the horrible coaching decisions down the stretch by the Gophers. The only games that separate Michigan from their game with Ohio State are Rutgers, Indiana, and Penn State. It is starting to get real.
