In Case You Missed It

BUCKEYE CAGERS: First things first, we have begun a preview of the Ohio State Men’s Basketball Team wherein we will be looking at the players, coaches, and what to expect for the upcoming season. There will be some serious expecations yet again for this Buckeye team and this team should be able to deliver. You can check out our first positional preview, the point guards, done by one of the four original MotSaG bloggers, Trevor (nee Zeke).

WISCONSIN: The Wisconsin game time has been set for 3:30 PM EST on the ABC/ESPN2 rotation depending on where you happening to be sitting next Saturday afternoon. I have a funny feeling I won’t be leaving the house in the middle of the third quarter to have a nice dinner out with Mrs. Kaiser.

THE TEBOW CONNECTION: I think a lot of Buckeye fans held Tim Tebow in pretty low regard during his years at Florida. The cards were stacked against him from the get-go, really. It of course started out with his contribution to the victory over Our Buckeyes in the 2006 National Championship game. Then, you throw in his humility and religious beliefs and the real possibility that he could have become the second two-time Heisman winner and he’s pretty much the worst thing ever. But for as much as I rooted against him, I always thought he was one of those guys I’d love to have on my team. So now, it’s with mixed emotions that we have to consider the fact that he kind of is on our team. Doug Lesmirises has a Q&A with Urban’s favored son, Tim Tebow:

“… And I guess as hard as it is for me to say, I am a pretty big fan now of The Ohio State University.”

“I think I got him a shirt,” Meyer said with a smile.

Speaking of the possibility of Tebow mentoring Braxton, Meyer said, “But I would love for those guys to get face-to-face, even train a little bit together, work out together. Tim is so busy, but I’m going to push for that to happen real hard.”

I think I’m okay with that. Combine Braxton’s freakish talent with Tebow’s work ethic and Braxton basically becomes the T-1000.

Rini over at WFNY has a slightly different take on Miller taking on a more Tebow-esque style of play.

TO THE VICTORS GO THE SPOILS: No surprises here, but Ryan Freaking Shazier and Bri’onte Dunn both picked up accolades in the Big Ten for their play last Saturday against Illinois.

BCS’ING: So Ohio State is ranked 5th in the AP Poll this week, and that may cause you to wonder where they would fit in the BCS picture at this point in the season. Brian Fremeau (writer for Football Outsiders) writes at ESPN’s Insider ($) that chances aren’t great this year, but “the truth is that the 2012 campaign really sets the stage well for strong seasons to come for Ohio State. We run projections for upcoming seasons based on Program FEI ratings, a five-year weighted efficiency measure, and Ohio State has one of the best five-year profiles in the country. They’ll be well-positioned to take advantage next season and beyond.”

UNIFORM SWAG: Ohio State’s Basketball Twitter tweeted yesterday the uniforms they will be donning for this Friday’s game against Marquette in the Carrier Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 PM EST.

HE’S CRAFTY: Speaking of OSU Basketball and Twitter, this was also “a thing” yesterday. (Vico was nowhere to be found. Some thoughts are probably best left untweeted)

2013 OSU recruit stats week 11

The season is coming to a close for more and more members of the 2013 class. Once all the guys are done completely I will add a season wrap up post with all their stats. Until then some of the players are still playing and working their way towards championships.

Jalin Marshall– Jalin Marshalls season is over.
Eli Woodard His team Eastern suffered a 19-18 loss to Lanape. A tough loss for Eli and his team.
Cam Burrows His team Trotwood-Madison beat Mount Healthy 48-0. Cam had a fumble recovery.
Joey Bosa– His team St. Thomas Aquinas beat Cooper City 53-0. Joey had 6 tackles and 2 sacks.
Marcus Baugh His team John W North enjoyed a 28-6 win over Arlington. Marcus had 3 catches for 63 yards and an INT on defense.
Evan Lisle Evan Lisles season is complete
Ezekiel Elliott His team John Burroughs HS enjoyed a 56-13 win over John F. Kennedy. Zeke had 13 carries for 119 yards and 5 total TDs.
Billy Price His team Austintown Fitch suffered a 35-26 to St. Ignatius. Ending his teams season.
Jayme Thompson His team Toledo Central Catholic beat Midview 50-7. he helped advance his team to the next round of the playoff.
J T Barrett- His team Rider beat Denton 40-7. Unfortunately JT is out for the season with a knee injury.
Michael Hill His team Pendleton beat Prosperity Mid-America 9-6. His season is over due to a hand injury.
Taivon Jacobs His team Suitland enjoyed a 49-7 win over Eleanor Roosevelt. Taivon had 3 catches for 74 yards and a TD.
Darron Lee His team New Albany enjoyed a 25-6 victory over Beechcroft. No stats were available.
Tracy Sprinkle Tracy Sprinkles season is over.
Tim Gardner His team Lawrence Central enjoyed a 21-7 win over North Central. Tim helped his team make the Regional Championships.
Johnny Townsend His team Boone enjoyed a 35-7 win over Cypress Creek. Johnny had a muffed punt recovery and an INT and 5 tackles.
Tyquan Lewis– His team Tarboro HS enjoyed a 53-13 win over Beddingfield. Tyquan had 4 tackles and 1 TFL.

Ezekiel Elliott continues to show Buckeye Nation why Urban Meyer and his staff choose him over more highly touted RBs. The guy is just flat out a baller. He has speed like we have prob never seen from a RB and elusiveness that will fits the system Coach Meyer is implementing. If he lives up to the hype that he is producing with his game play he could be something very special for years to come at OSU.

B1G Power Rankings: Ninth Edition

With a couple of teams on the bye week and the top of the conference teams playing against some of the bottom feeders of the conference, there were no upsets to shake up this weeks power rankings. The only notable loss in the conference was Sparty losing at home once again to Nebraska. With the Buckeyes on the bye this week, there are a couple of notable match-ups with Leaders Division implications.

1. Ohio State (10-0)- The Buckeyes dominated the worst team in the conference and head into the bye week undefeated.

2. Nebraska (7-2)- Taylor Martinez led the ‘Huskers to a late touchdown to defeat the Spartans at East Lansing. They take on Penn State this weekend at home in hope to extend their winning streak to 4 games.

3. Northwestern (7-2)- The Wildcats had an extra week to prepare for Michigan and a win would put them into second place for the Legends Division. Pat Fitzgerald’s squad will also be rooting for Penn State to knock off Nebraska.

4. Michigan (6-3)- Michigan took care of business versus Minnesota without Denard Robinson, as backup quarterback Devin Gardner tallied three total touchdowns. They’ll need Robinson back this weekend though as they clash with Northwestern at the Big House.

5. Penn State (6-3)- The Nittany Lions rebounded from their loss versus Ohio State in convincing fashion. They hope to shake up the Legends Division this weekend when they take on Nebraska.

6. Wisconsin (6-3)- Wisconsin got the week off and now travel to Indiana to take on a rising Hoosier squad. The Badgers cannot overlook Indiana as they can score with anyone. Yes, it feels very odd saying that.

7. Michigan State (5-5)- Sparty loses another game at home, this time to Nebraska. It seemed as though their schedule was set up for them to succeed this year with most of their big games coming at home, but the Spartans are not who we thought they were.

8. Indiana (4-5)- Indiana is looking to become bowl eligible for the first time since their story book 2007 season.

9. Iowa (4-5)- The Hawkeyes fell to the Hoosiers in the Mediocrity Bowl. They are now in the basement of the B1G.

10. Minnesota (5-4)- Minnesota had their chance to get a marquee win versus Michigan with Shoelace out of the lineup but failed to do so. But on the bright side, they should take care of business versus lowly Illinois this weekend.

11. Purdue (3-6)- It seemed as though Penn State took out their aggression on the Boilermakers. Purdue looks to jump Iowa in next weeks power rankings as the two square off this weekend.

12. Illinois (2-7)- Not much to say here as the Illini are putting up a good case to be recognized as the worst team in the country.

Position Preview: Point Guards

We kick-off the position previews by looking at the point guards. The buckeyes return both point guards from last year’s team. Thad Matta will lean heavily on his two point guards to overcome the loss of Jared Sullinger and William Buford, two of the top three scorers from last year. Consistency at the point guard position should be a stabilizing factor as Thad Matta develops his new rotation. Without further adieu, let’s introduce you to the two stabilizing forces.

Aaron Craft is a 6’2″ Jr. from Findlay, OH. Craft is the unquestioned emotional leader of this team. He embodies what you think of a prototypical point guard. He is a vocal leader, but more impressively his effort on the court speaks for itself. The team will feed off his defensive intensity. Craft was named the Big Ten Conference defensive player of the year last year. The key will be can Craft continue to improve his offensive production and maintain his stellar defensive play. The buckeyes are losing 32 points per game. I look for Craft to fill some of that void. I was (pleasantly) surprised to see that Craft averaged 44% from beyond the arc in conference games last year, but that only translated to 35% for the season. I am looking for Craft to be more consistent shooting from outside which will help his ability to get to the basket for easy buckets or find open shooters on the wing.

Shannon Scott is a 6’1″ So. from Alpharetta, Ga. Shannon comes from NBA blood lines; his father is former North Carolina Tarheel and NBA player, Charlie Scott. Shannon is one player that should see his role significantly increase this year. Scott only averaged 10.5 min/game last season. Similar to Craft I am interested to see if Shannon has improved his outside shot. Granted the sample size is limited, but Scott shot an abysmal 28% from the field, including 6% from 3-point range, last year. If the exhibition game is any indication, Craft and Scott will be on the court simultaneously this year. Scott has to be a threat from the outside in order for that lineup to be effective. The jury is still out on Scott’s ability/potential. This year should answer some questions. He will have to play in Craft’s shadow the entire season. I will be interested to see if he can step out of that shadow and make a name for himself.

2012-2013 Basketball Preview

We plan to take advantage of the bye week and preview the 2012-2013 men’s basketball team. Tune in every day this week for posistion previews as we get you prepared for the season opener Friday night against Marquette.

Blogpoll – Week 10

Bama and Notre Dame survived close games. Oregon won in a shoot out. Kansas St. lost its Heisman candidate QB in the 3rd Qtr. Ohio St. Blew out a horrible Illinois team. That is how your top 5 teams did yesterday. Notre Dame looked like a bad team for most of their game versus a really bad Pitt team in South Bend no less. So I dropped them. Ohio State has a bye this week to get healthy and get ready for their two toughest games this year on the road at Wisconsin and at home against Michigan.

I won’t lie I don’t want to see an SEC team in the NCG. I am just like every other non-SEC team fan I want their reign to end. I would love to see what a game between Oregon and Notre Dame would look like or Oregon and Bama. Just to see what great offense vs great defense would look like.

Hyde, Miller and Buckeyes Roll over Illinois, 52-22

Braxton Miller and crew picked up right where they left off this afternoon, grinding and throwing their way to a perfect 10-0 record, beating Illinois soundly and unequivocally, 52-22.

The defense once again came to play, limiting the admittedly anemic Illinois offense to a paltry 170 yards. The Illini couldn’t get anything going on the ground or through the air. Nathan Scheelhaase was pestered all game long by Simon and Williams and the defense stonewalled whatever rushing attack Illinois tried to mount.

The linebacking corps also came to play, with Shazier and Boren keeping Scheelhaasein in front of them and containing Donovonn Young and the Illinois ground game.

Braxton definitely “went back to quarterbacking school” after the Penn State game. His passes looked much crisper and his pass to Rod Smith on his 50 yard wheel route was a thing of beauty. He also is clearly developing a rapport with Nick Vannett. Braxton also pitched in with 73 yards on the ground and a TD run to top of another impressive performance.

For his part, Carlos Hyde put together another strong effort, carrying the ball 18 times for 137 yards and three touchdowns.

At this point, the Ohio State ground game is a known quantity. They’re going to grind out yards on the ground and get them in bunches at times. The passing game is still nascent, but is showing signs of development.

All was not perfect, of course. Special teams coverage left something to be desired and personal fouls kept drives alive longer than they should have. Fumbles can be costly. But we’ll let the coaches worry about that and just enjoy another dominating performance.

Ohio State: 52
Illinois: 22

Illinois Live In Game Cat

Save The Turtle!!

Preview: Illinois

Everybody outside of Columbus thinks that they know how this will go down.  However, the Fightin’ Zook’s…errr…Beckman’s will undoubtedly rise to the occasion and play its best game of the season against Ohio State.  This is how it works when Illinois and Ohio State play.  It is like a college football bizarro world.   Like Danny Hope snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and still clapping like a boss.

I think most of us Buckeye fans know how this one is going to turn out.  It will be gut-wrenching.  It will be ugly (It would be uglier if it were in Memorial Stadium), but OSU will find a way to pull this out and maybe get an insurance touchdown mid-way through the fourth quarter.

Anyone that tells you this will be an easy game…they just don’t know B1G football.

Previewin’

I would give all kinds of grief to the Illini fanbase, but they have enough problems.  Its football team is horrible, and they don’t even have a good basketball team to look forward to in the wintertime.  I’d think that there is a contingent of Illini fans that would like get Zook back at this rate, which is basically say that a kick in the balls (Zook) is better than an “honest to goodness” punch in the face (Beckman).

Beckman will get the Illini back on track.  It will take some time.  Illini fans…look at Toledo this year…that will be you in about 2 years.  Godspeed.

When Illinois has the ball

Scheelhaase.  He is the Illinois offense, which isn’t saying much for 2012.  The Illinois offense is terrible this year for whatever reason (UFM says it is the young wide receiver corps, so I’ll believe him.).  It ranks 103rd in yard passing per game (184.9 y/g) and isn’t much better at running the ball gaining only 132.5 y/g, which is 91st in the FBS.  Scheelhaase was more productive the last two years and has more interceptions (5) than touchdowns (4).  For as good as Scheelhaase has been the last two years, this has to be a disappointment to Illinois fans.  More of a disappointment than living in Illinois (and don’t tell me you live Chicago…Bloomington-Normal isn’t a freakin’ Chicago suburb).  The running game is non-existent.  I don’t see how Illinois is going to be able to move the ball on the OSU Defense, but this game is for the Illi-Buck so expect the unexpected.  Hankins and Co. on the D-line should have a field day if they decide to try and run, since the there is no way that OSU would play 10-yards off the Illini WRs right?

When OSU has the ball

Illinois is giving up 30 points per game.  In the last five games, the minimum amount of points given up was 31 points to offensively-challenged Wisconsin.  That defense made Michigan and Derpnard look like Oregon.  Lots of Shoelaces spoon-feeding on offense…and a lot of ole’ defense.  The Illinois defense has a couple of decent players that can cause problems like Akeem Spence and rush end Michael Buchanan, but this wont be enough to keep OSU from scoring points.

Prediction
Barring any terrible B1G reffing (I’m looking at you Illinois 2007),  OSU starts slow (AGAIN) and falls behind early giving Illinois that glimmer of hope that will last until the 3rd quarter.  Miller and Hyde get their rushing yards and the Buckeyes grind out another win.

OSU 37-13

How you feel?
