Ohio State receives gift for new arena
St. John Arena has been an icon for decades and while many fans have never experienced a sporting event in it most have at least been to a skull session or a dozen. In reality SJA has been used for minor sports and tournaments ever since the Mens Bball team moved to Value City Arena. SJA is oversized for the events it holds often looking empty and the is falling apart at its seems with costs to repair it in the 30-40 million dollars. Even if they did fix it for that cost it would be underutilized and too expensive for upkeep. So it will be tore down sooner rather then later. Thankfully OSU has a huge fan in the Covelli family which own a huge amount of Paneras and has recently made a 10 million dollar donation to build a new arena.
Covelli Arena will be a 4000 seat state of the art arena that will be home to seven olympic sports like gymnastics, wrestling, fencing, and volleyball. It also will occasionally host womens Bball games and high school tournaments. You can view the entire article from the Columbus Dispatch here.
Thad Matta is HOT on the recruiting trail
When I wrote the recruiting post about Keita Bates-Diop a few days ago I was hoping it would be a domino effect and Coach Matta would finally get over this recruiting hump he has been struggling against. I however had no idea it would be so soon and with such a highly ranked and important recruit. This newest recruit is a local home grown product but one that was getting national interest and most importantly that TTUN was heavily chasing much like they were with Keita Bates-Diop. Two recruiting victories in the span of a few days on BEAT MICHIGAN week is ever so sweet. Here is the second commit in the 2014 recruiting class for Ohio State.
Jae’Sean Tate is a 6’5″ 200 lbs 4 star Small Forward from Pickerington, Ohio. Jae’Sean is one of those rare talents that you don’t see very often especially coming out of Central Ohio the best former player to compare him with is Michael Redd. He has a smooth jumpshot and also is able to make his way to the basket at ease but can also find his own shot when needed. ESPN ranks him the 43rd best player in the 2014 class and the no 1 player in Ohio. Rivals ranks him as a four star currently. Scouts ranks him as the 14th best SF in the class. 247sports composite ranks has him as the 44th best player and no 1 overall in Ohio. Below you can see his highlight reel.

What’s that, you say? Denard Robinson may be starting Saturday? That’s going to make someone numbered 54 very happy.
B1G Power Rankings: Rivalry Edition
It took one overtime, but the Buckeyes defeated Wisconsin for first place in the  Leaders Division. Michigan State continued their home woes versus Northwestern and Nebraska took care of Minnesota to secure the drivers seat in the Legends Division. As a result of last weekend, Northwestern and Wisconsin flip-flopped positions.
1. Ohio State– After locking up the Leaders Division, it’s all about finishing the season undefeated and destroying TTUN.
2. Nebraska– Nebraska has all but sealed up the Legends Division, needing a win versus a pitiful Iowa team or a Michigan loss at Ohio State. Expect both to happen as the ‘Huskers will square off against Wisconsin in the B1G Championship Game.
3. Michigan– It will be weird to see Devin Gardner lined up behind center this week with Denard Robinson at RB/WR/QB after Fitzgerald Toussaint’s gruesome leg injury last week.
4. Northwestern– The Wildcats went on the road and beat Michigan State last week in another close game, look for them to handle Illinois and cap a very successful season at 9-3.
5. Wisconsin– The Badgers must feel worthy representing the Leaders Division as a third place team.
6. Penn State– Bill O’Brien hopes his squad can finish off a surprisingly successful season with a win at home versus Wisconsin. It will be very interesting to see how the Nittany Lions build after this season.
7. Michigan State– Another home loss for the Spartans, this time versus Northwestern. At this point, the end of this disappointing season cannot come soon enough for Sparty.
8. Minnesota– The Gophers are bowl eligible and will look for a marquee win in their season finale versus Michigan State.
9. Purdue– Purdue welcomes in state rival Indiana to West Lafayette in what should be a high scoring affair.
10. Indiana– Indiana looks to finish off a successful season in Hoosier terms with a win over Purdue.
11. Iowa– The Hawkeyes could do their part to shake up the Legends Division with a win over Nebraska on Friday night, unlikely though.
12. Illinois– The Illini have been outscored 231- 80 in the B1G this year.
Check back on last week’s rankings and feel free to comment.
Memories…
We used to post these on the regular during Michigan Week in years past, so it’s time we say hello to two old friends: The Memories post and Sir Mount Vernon:

IT’S BEAT MICHIGAN WEEK!!!
The Spread, HATE WEEK: HATE.
If this was any other week, I would spend most of this post talking about today’s addition of Maryland to the Big Ten and the rumored addition of Rutgers supposedly coming tomorrow. I would then discuss the shocking upsets of this past weekend that essentially guaranteed at least one SEC team will be playing for the national title. Then I would make jokes about games that I’ll end up watching anyway.
But this is HATE WEEK. And HATE WEEK is for the HATE.
Some people don’t understand the HATE. They say things like, “I want both teams to be good when they play!” and “I don’t like them, but I respect them!” and “Durrrrrrrrrrr!” These people cheered for Michigan to beat Alabama, because they have fallen for the media-driven conference-unity narrative that has completely consumed the SEC. Does it make sense that a Mississippi State fan would ridicule an Ohio State fan because the Buckeyes lost a bowl game to Florida? Does it make sense that a Mississippi State fan would ridicule an Ohio State fan for any reason?
But cheering for M!c#!g@n? I’d rather be the one team shut out of a 123-team playoff than cheer for M!c#!g@n to “help boost our strength of schedule.” I want them to be 0-11 every year when we play. I want to see about a hundred more of these! Every three years, I want them to fire their coach the day after The Game.
And speaking of coaches…
There really couldn’t be a better M!c#!g@n coach for Ohio State fans. He’s a walking punchline. Are fat jokes cheap and sophomoric? Yes, but all is forgiven because Hoke set himself up for every single one of them a long time ago and not just by promising to never not super-size. But by doing this:
That’s right, Hoke married a Homberger. Say it out loud. Say it in your best Hoke voice. Never stop laughing. But, more importantly, never stop HATING.
