Is LaQuinton Ross Ready To Take A Leadership Role?

OSU LogoWith Ohio State football just around the corner, we don’t want to forget about the Buckeye Ballers. The Buckeyes once again will have an intriguing team on the hardwood. Whether that team can be just intriguing or a true title contender will depend on the play of junior forward LaQuinton Ross. After a strong tournament showing, it is now time for him to take on a leadership role.

When Deshaun Thomas decided to skip his senior season, to go to the NBA, many of us rightfully felt that the team took a huge hit. Yes, any time you lose your leading scorer and All-American candidate, it stings. Ross is capable of being a great replacement for Thomas though.

In his final three tournament games of 2012, Ross averaged over 17 points per game. During that time, he morphed into a true go-to scorer when times were tough. He was mostly a perimeter-oriented playmaker last season, but this upcoming season, he could have a bit more freedom in the offense to create while attacking the rim.

rossRoss has all the makings of a strong defender as well, but with Aaron Craft, Shannon Scott and Sam Thompson already on the team and scheduled to get a lot of minutes, Ross will probably not draw an offense-oriented matchup. His long arms can cause havoc as a help defender though, and he can provide more value on that side of the court than Thomas ever could.

He’s come a long way since the skinny SF committed to Thad Matta. After an up and down freshman campaign in Columbus, Ross waited until the end of his sophomore season to really showcase his potential as a legitimate college and fantasy basketball star and future NBA player. It remains to be seen if he can carry that over in a starring role this season, but he has all the physical tools to do so. Ohio State might not get as much hype as they did in the preseason last year, but they could very well make a Final Four run with the talent they have.

Aaron Craft is definitely the defensive leader of this team. Can LaQuinton become the leader on offense?

Women’s Basketball Program New Coach, New Recruits

Let’s face it, the women’s basketball teams under Jim Foster underachieved in the NCAA Tournament year after year and this last season not even making it caused him to be removed. You look back on Foster’s numbers and they were kind of impressive: winning the Big Ten regular season title six times and the B1G tournament title four times. He had a regular season record of 278-82 (136-46 in Big Ten). Foster, however, failed to make it past the Sweet Sixteen. Last season the Buckeyes finished 18-13, the first time in 11 seasons he failed to make tournament.

Ohio State was the top job open because one, it’s Ohio State and, two, top players do come here to play. Surprisingly the Buckeyes received a lot of “No Thanks” from potential coaches but one who was under a long term contract wanted the job. As he put it a “Dream Job”. Kevin McGuff was coaching at the University of Washington for the past two seasons before he accepted the head coaching position for the Buckeyes. McGuff said the only job he would have left Washington for was Ohio State and he jumped on the chance to come home. Kevin coached at Xavier for 9 years before he went to Washington. His record was 213-73 which was the most wins by any woman’s head coach there. The Musketeers made the postseason each of the 9 years under McGuff, last five being the NCAA tourney. The best year was 2010 where they lost in the Elite Eight by 2 points to Stanford.

Kevin McGuff won a National Championship as an assistant coach at Notre Dame in 2001. He knows what it takes to win and what kind of players he wants. McGuff has a bunch of positives going for him being the new head coach for the Buckeyes, have newly renovated practice gyms and weight rooms, once again it is Ohio State (honestly who needs more than that). The coach recently announced his team non conference schedule and the Buckeyes are playing the top teams, teams that have made the tournament and done well in it. He understands with Maryland (2006 NCAA Champs) and Rutgers (2007 NCAA Finals) coming into the league next season the Big Ten is going to become a powerhouse and he is poised to lead the Buckeyes in front of everyone.

The coaching staff has been busy on the recruiting trail and yesterday they received three commitments for the 2014 season. All three recruits are Ohio natives and two of them are twins. The twin sisters will be joining their dad who is one of the assistant coaches for the Buckeyes. Their father was the head coach at Taft before he joined the Buckeyes staff in May.

The Mitchell sisters, Kelsey and Chelsea are coming from Princeton High School in Cincinnati. Kelsey (5’7″) was named the Enquirer player of the year last two seasons, she is an elite point guard that is ranked number one overall and number one at her position by prospectnations.com. Kelsey is a lefty that can pass well, has the ability to create, has quick hands and can anticipate well, she isn’t a lock down defender but maybe Aaron Craft could help her. Chelsea (5’11”) is a forward that can shoot from long range (25%), solid rebounding and passes very well.

Alexa Hart (6’3″) comes from Afrcientric High School in Columbus. She is one of the top post players in the country. prospect nation has her ranked fifteenth overall and number two at her position. Hart is the best shot blocker in her class and has tremendous length in the paint.

The addition of these women is going to be great for the Buckeyes and it shows that coach McGuff and his staff is out there working hard and the results are starting to come in. The Ohio States Women’s Basketball team is about to be on the rise.

A Look Ahead: Matta’s 2013 Basketball Signees

OSU LogoWith the 2013 NBA Draft in the rear view mirror and the NBA Summer League in full swing, it’s time to take a look at the next wave of potential NBA talent. The Ohio State Buckeyes are no stranger when it comes to players being selected in the NBA draft. After all, the Buckeyes have had at least one player drafted every year since 2007. Some have been successful (Mike Conley) and others (Greg Oden & Byron Mullens) have just been tall.

The streak may be in jeopardy this year. Most experts believe LaQuinton Ross has the best chance of any current Buckeye to get drafted. He showed great flashes late in the season, most notably in the Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Tournament. Others believe senior to be point guard Aaron Craft will be the next to walk across the NBA Draft stage. Only time will tell.

Regardless of how a player’s career unfolds, getting to the league is a special accomplishment. It’s certainly one that player and coach can celebrate together. Year after year, Coach Matta and his staff have had the pleasure to celebrate with at least one drafted Buckeye. It really speaks volumes for their recruiting ability as well as honing and developing the talent that is brought in.

Enter 2012 signees Marc Loving of Toledo, OH (St. John’s Jesuit) and Kameron Williams of Towson, MD (Mount Saint Joseph). Loving is a silky smooth 6-7 small forward with range and Williams is a 6-2 shooting guard with range and the ability to slash. Both will be welcome additions to the Ohio State roster.

Neither player is a “one and done” type of recruit. With that being said, both are national top 100 recruits that have a chance to impact Buckeye basketball for the next several years. Lets take a more in depth look at both of them.

Marc Loving

This talented 6-7 swingman can do a little bit of everything. Loving’s decorated high school career was capped off when he won Ohio’s Mr. Basketball in 2012 (where he averaged 22 points and 9 rebounds a game). He has been in Ohio State’s 2012 class for what seems like an eternity. Loving also played for one of the Midwest’s most talented AAU programs in All-Ohio Red. The chance to showcase his talent on that type of stage made him a national name. See highlights here.

Loving brings great versatility with his game when he is on the floor. Essentially, he can be a two guard, small forward or power forward depending on the style of play during any particular game. Coach Matta will be able to create mismatches on the offensive end of the floor for the opposing team. Loving is known for his outside shooting at this point in his development. He still needs to develop a stronger lower and upper body for high level Division I basketball. Undoubtedly, that will come with time and a lot of hard work.

The outside shot of Loving’s also allows him to be an effective driver of the basketball. He can finish with either hand but will need to continue to develop this part of his offensive game. Loving is not known for his defense but will need to prove he can play great defense in order to play for Coach Matta at Ohio State. We’ve seen guys (LaQuinton Ross) with an explosive offensive repertoire not get off the pine because they can’t play defense. I see Loving contributing this season. How much, is still unknown. It all hinges on his ability to play on the defensive side of the floor and develop some strength.

Kam Williams

The 2nd commitment in the 2012 class was Baltimore, MD product, Kam Williams. The 6-2 Williams can flat out score. He will be an instant scoring threat off the bench this season for Coach Matta. Whether it is from behind the three point arc or off penetration, Williams will be a big time scorer in the Big Ten before his career is over.

Much like Loving, he will need to gain strength once he steps foot in a college weight room. His lack of size can be compensated for a quick first step and an uncanny ability to finish at the rim over taller players. 247 sports basketball recruiting expert Jerry Meyer has tweeted, “Ohio State commitment Kameron Williams is a scoring machine”. I hope Meyer (hey, we know that name) is right with his assessment. Check out some highlights here.

During the recruiting process, many experts thought Miami (FL) would land the services of Williams. However, once Williams stepped foot in Columbus all bets were off. It took him less than a week to commit to the program once he visited. “Ohio State is a big time basketball school,” Williams told Bucknuts.com. “It is a big time atmosphere. I love the people, I love the coaching staff and I love Coach Matta. It just seemed like a really good fit.” We couldn’t agree more Kam!

It remains to be seen how long Loving and Williams will be at Ohio State and how successful they will be. They’ve got tremendous upside and more importantly great attitudes and appreciation for the program they are entering. Coach Matta will make sure he puts them in the right position in order to be successful. The rest is up to Loving and Williams. If I was a betting man, I’d say both will have successful careers at Ohio State. They may even have a chance to walk across the NBA stage on draft day and look back at the rear view mirror, celebrating the place that helped them accomplish their dreams.

Until next time Buckeye Nation…

A Farewell to Chris Jent

It’s been over a month since Chris Jent left Ohio State’s coaching staff to join his friend Mike Malone in Sacramento. I have a fondness for Chris Jent. I remember watching him play for the Buckeye’s basketball team from 1988-1992. Jent wasn’t one of the best players to put on the Scarlet and Gray but he was one of mine (and I’m sure countless other fan’s) favorite Buckeye’s. Chris played in 123 games averaged 8.2 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists while playing almost 23 minutes each game. His last game was in the Elite Eight game in 1992. The only time the “Fab Five” beat OSU that season. Jent left his mark on fans with his hustle, diving all over the floor for loose balls. As I watched Aaron Craft this past postseason he reminded me of Jent during his tenure.

In 1993 he won Gold in 1993 playing for the United States in the FIBA Wold Championship. Chris went on to play three seasons in the NBA winning a ring with the Houston Rockets in 1994. He played 3 regular season games for the Rockets that year then played the same amount of games for the New York Knicks in the 96-97 season. Chris played more games in the postseason for the Rockets (11 games) than his whole regular season career.

Jent coaching career includes stops in Philadelphia in 2003-2004 as an assistant coach for the 76ers. The following season he was an assistant for Orlando but was put in as a interim head coach replacing Johnny Davis for the final 18 games. Before Chris’ return back to the Buckeye’s bench he made a stop in Cleveland as an assistant coach/player developer having helped a player you might have heard of in Lebron James. He served as LBJ’s personal shooting coach. June 29th,2011 Thad Matta introduced Jent as his new assistant coach and was awarded by Chris helping lead the team to the Final Four in 2012.

June 10th, 2013 Mike Malone welcomed his friend Chris Jent to Sacramento becoming an assistant coach for the Kings. Malone and Jent have been friends since they were 16 meeting at a basketball camp that year. They played AAU ball against each other. Both served as assistants on the Cavs staff from 2006-2010. They both had a dream that they would work together being in charge of a team someday. That dream happened when Malone was hired as the Kings head coach and Jent was happy to join his friend.

I have no ill will for Chris Jent and his decision to leave the Buckeye’s bench and joining his long time friend. I will always remember all the positive that he did while being a player and or as a coach. Chris will always be a member of the Scarlet and Gray. It is with a sad heart that I bid Chris farwell from the Buckeye’s bench but wish him nothing but success in his future in Sacramento (unless he is going against my Cavaliers). Chris you will always be my favorite. I along with Buckeye Nation say Thank You and godspeed.

MotSaG Reader’s Digest for July 14, 2013

b1g_iconBlog/site newsOSU LogoOSU FootballThe MotSaG Reader’s Digest is just that — a quick glance at the past week of content here at Men of the Scarlet and Gray. This will give you a chance to catch up on anything you may have missed during the course of the week. This isn’t everything we posted this week, so we always encourage everyone to subscribe to our feed, sign up for email alerts or simply check the website on a regular basis.

Site News

We kicked off the week with the announcement that we had added a host of new writers to site, most of which you have read in the past week or so and some you’ll read in the coming week. We have made a serious push to recruit some fine writers and I think we’ve been successful in that endeavor. We are excited to have such a good group.

Wrestling

Speaking of new writers, we also launched a new content category here on the site led by our new writer Garth: Wrestling. He spoke with future B1G member Rutger’s wrestling coach, Scott Goodale. Along with the future of the Rutger’s wrestling program, Garth also touched on the impact that Rutger’s is feeling in anticipation of joining the B1G:

Thus, at least for football, wrestling and many other sports, one suspects, the move to the Big Ten has to be seen as a recruiting bonanza

Garth also spoke with former Buckeye wrestler Reece Humphrey and his quest to compete at the highest level of wrestling in the 2016 Olympics.

Garth wrapped up the week with a personal story about Archie Griffin and his ill-timed sickness before one of the biggest wrestling matches of the future Heisman winner’s life.

Recruiting

Dylan gave us a recap of all the future Buckeye’s that were out in the Pacific Northwest the week before, participating in The Opening . The Buckeyes were well represented, bringing nine recruits to the festivities, the most from any single team.

Dylan says that Terry Mclaurin had the best showing of the nine Buckeyes there:

Terry’s numbers for the four events for Sparq were 4.4 seconds for the 40-yard dash and an amazing 44.8″ vertical jump. He also had a 42′ power toss and a 4.07 second shuttle run. In the final competition he came in second overall by winning 3 of the 4 events. In addition to his incredible athletic ability, on the last day of 7 on 7, he hauled in four TDs.

We also had interviews with David Dowell and Jonathan Hilliman.

On the basketball recruiting side, Chris K. gave us an update on Carlton Bragg, a target Thad Matta would love to land here in Columbus.

Football

Jeremiah (SYR) looked at the recently announced 2016 and 2017 football schedules. He also recapped the sad story of Ray Small and the sorry turns his life has taken ever since he left the Buckeye football team.

Coming up

We’ve got a lot of great content coming next week that we’ve been hard at work on and we are really excited about sharing.

We’ll be starting a new series looking at the Top 25 Football Players in the B1G, starting with #25 tomorrow. Here’s a spoiler: We’ll start with a Buckeye. Will we end with one, too?

We also will be introducing another writer that we’re really excited about, breaking down some of the technical aspects of the Tom Herman/Urban Meyer offense, starting with the tight ends.

That, and a whole lot more awaits as we lead up to the opening of camp in August

OSU FootballOSU LogoBest Damn Band in The Land: This isn’t shocking but as every Buckeye fan knows that Script Ohio has been selected as the B1G’s Best Traditions. The folks at Athlon Sports has an article out and talks about how great Script Ohio is. Every time I witness it I still get goosebumps (of course anytime I’m walking into the Shoe it happens too). They also selected the Rivalry as Number Three. Beaver Stadium’s “White Out” was chosen second. The O-H-I-O chant was selected but low on the board.

Return of the Night Lights: According to Buckeye Planet Friday Night Lights will be returning July 26, 2013. This is the second year Coach Meyer has held the camp in Columbus, he originally started it in Gainesville with much success.

Media Days: The B1G has announced who will be attending the Media Days at the Hilton Chicago July 24-25th. The Ohio State University will be represented by Senior Jack Mewhort, Juniors Braxton Miller and Bradley Roby. Of course Coach Meyer will also be there.

Big Man Wanted: Thad Matta is on a mission to find the elusive Big Man. The Buckeyes only have one opening remaining for the 2013-2014 basketball team and they need a center to replace Evan Ravenel who graduated. Lets send out positive vibes for this to happen and lets see Buckeye Basketball back in the Final Four and beyond.

Coach gets Extention: As I reported to you before the B1G will now officially have Lacrosse as a B1G Sport. Nick Myers the coach of the Buckeyes Lacrosse team for the last five seasons just received a five year extention running until 2018. Coach Myers led the Buckeyes to the best season in Ohio State history. Congrats to Coach Myers and continued success.

Thank You for taking the time again for joining us today Buckeye Fans and remember if your on Facebook like us on there, follow us on twitter @MotSaG (or each writer who’s handles are on the right side of the page, plus we are working on getting back on Google+. You can also subscribe to get your daily dose of Men of the Scarlet and Gray emailed to you and please if you have any news, videos, memes, anything Buckeye related send it through the “contact us” tab.

We are planning on running 3 yards and a Cloud of links every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. I will be on the look out for other Buckeye sports news than just Football and Basketball to inform all Scarlet and Gray fans whats going on with their favorite University.

Well Buckeye Nation until next time.

Carlton Bragg: 2015 Elite Power Forward

OSU Logo(This is a guest post by Chris Kuhner, a future motsag basketball blogger)

While many Buckeye fans are anxiously awaiting the upcoming football season, Buckeye men’s Head Basketball Coach Thad Matta has his eyes set toward the future. After rounding out his coaching staff last week because of the departure of Chris Jent to the NBA (Sacramento Kings), all the focus now is on recruiting.

Matta’s 2014 class is already one of the nation’s best, with four commits on board. While the 2014 success has been great so far, Matta and his staff are not resting. They are already aggressively pursuing some of the nation’s elite prospects in the 2015 class.

At the top of that list is none other than Carlton Bragg, the super athletic 6-9, 220 pound power forward. Bragg hails from Villa Angela-St. Joseph in Cleveland, Ohio. He helped bring home the Ohio IV state championship after the school had not won it in 18 years. This is the same high school that also produced Buckeye greats Clark Kellogg and David Lighty. Not only is Bragg on the top of Ohio State’s wish list, he’s also on the wish list of schools from coast to coast. Most recruiting services have him as a national top 25 recruit in the class of 2015.

It’s easy to see why. As the game continues to move toward the perimeter, stretch fours and fives are becoming more valuable. Bragg is your quintessential stretch four. His ability to shoot the three pointer (shot over 50% last season) and put the ball on the floor makes him extremely difficult to guard. This is the kind of all-around offensive game coaches salivate over.

By nature, Bragg is reserved off the court. But on the court, his game speaks for itself. In a recent interview with 247’s Blue Devil Lair ($) , Bragg talked about his game and where he is at in the process:

BlueDevilLair: For those who haven’t been able to see you, give a scouting report to the fans.

Carlton Bragg: I just play like a big man and run the floor. I love to run the floor.

To read more of Carlton Bragg’s interview, please visit 247’s Blue Devil Lair ($).

Bragg has already been to Ohio State’s campus and is surely to make return visits as the process continues. His next scheduled event will be this upcoming week in Indianapolis at the Adidas Invitational. 2014 verbal commit Dave Bell (Garfield Heights HS) is also scheduled to attend. Hopefully Bell has a chance to let Bragg know how he feels about Ohio State.

Stay tuned, with a ton of major events in the coming month, Buckeye basketball recruiting is sure to pick up.

Ohio State promotes Greg Paulus to assistant coach

OSU Logo(This is a guest post by Aaron, one of the applicants for the recently open positions on the MotSaG staff.)

Like Steve Wojciechowski, Chris Collins, Tommy Amaker, Jeff Caple and several others before him, Greg Paulus is among the list of former Duke players turned college basketball coach as an assistant. On June 28th, 2013 Ohio State officially hired Paulus as a full time assistant coach. Paulus started his coaching career on the hardwood in August of 2010 an assistant coach for Navy before moving on to a video coordinator position under Thad Matta in May of 2011.

Paulus, an Ohio native of Medina, played his college basketball career at Duke from 2005-09. Some of his career highlights include tallying 187 assists in his freshman year placing him 3rd behind only Bobby Hurley(288) and Jay Williams(220) on the all-time total for a freshman as well as making the 2nd team All-American freshman team. After Duke he moved on to be the starting quarterback for the Syracuse Orange during his lone season in 2009.

Paulus takes over for Chris Jent who has left Ohio State to make a return to the NBA as an assistant for the Sacramento Kings. Matta is counting on Paulus to bring the intelligence that so many others from the Mike Krzyzewski coaching tree have displayed over the years.

The basketball Buckeyes begin their season on Nov. 9th at the Value City Arena against Morgan State.
