Weekly Players to Watch: Week 6 Northwestern

For the second straight week, Ohio State is a participant in ESPN’s “Game of the Week”.  Same time, different place and opponent.  This time we’re on the road against the Northwestern Wildcats.  This will be a massive test for the Buckeyes, so lets take a look at some of the players that you should keep an eye on Saturday, who will effect the outcome of the game.

Northwestern

The Dual QB system- Kaine Colter (#2) and Trevor Siemian (#13) are the two quarterbacks Ohio State will be prepping for this week.  Colter is the dual threat QB who is more likely to burn you on the ground, than through the air.  So far this season Colter is averaging 6.1 yards per rush, and only 7.6 yards per attempt.  He’s recorded 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions against the likes of Cal, Main, and Western Michigan.  However, he does have the Manziel look and elusiveness when he runs.

Siemian’s statistics aren’t much better.  He’s the passing quarterback in this system and he’s recorded 9.6 yards per attempt with 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.  He is fairly accurate, and he can move out of the pocket and gain a few yards with his legs.  However, his effectiveness, along with Colter’s has been limited this year.  The reason for these quarterbacks lack of production is mainly due to the absence of their All Big Ten running back and utility man, Venric Mark.

Venric Mark, Running Back #5-  Mark is the key to the success of this offense.  While his injury has not been disclosed, it has held him out since the opener against Cal, which leads me to believe either the injury was serious, or Fitzgerald has been saving him for this game.  Mark is an electric, powerful running back, who can tear apart any defense he faces.  While the Buckeyes have staked their claim as a very good front seven against the run, they have yet to face a triple threat attack like Mark, Siemian, and Colter, who can punish you on the ground or through the air.  Mark will be available in some capacity this Saturday, according to Cats head coach Pat Fitzgerald.  However, he was listed as the starter, and I expect to see Mark in the game early and often.

Just to give you guys some idea of what Mark is capable of, here are is stats from last year: 226 rushes, 1366 yards, 12 touchdowns, 6 yards per rush, 20 receptions, 104 yards, 1 touchdown, and finally, 15 kick/punt returns for 280 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He’s an extremely versatile weapon, that may cause Ohio State fits if they don’t contain him  If that isn’t enough, check out his highlight reel, to the theme of “Sharknado”.

Ohio State

Ryan Shazier-  If there is a dangerous weapon in the opponents backfield, it seems to be the common theme to assign that guy to Ryan Shazier.  Shazier loves the challenge of facing great, versatile running backs.  As previously stated, Mark is fast north and south, and he can also make you miss in open space.  If he breaks the first level of contain, Shazier will need to track him down, and prevent him from creating any serious damage.  I also expect Shazier to cover Mark coming out of the backfield, as Northwestern likes to use him in the passing game as well, either  as a dump off, or on wheel routes.  Shazier has the speed and talent to cover Mark, but he will have to be on his A game in order to negate the impact of Mark on the game.

Corey “Pittsburgh” Brown-  He’s the “other Corey Brown” in the Ohio State program.  Coach Coombs and Meyer have pegged Brown as the leading candidate to step in and replace senior leader Christian Bryant.  While the decision will ultimately come from Coach Withers, I’m expecting Brown to be pegged as the starter.  Brown has the most experience at the position, and when facing a pretty difficult offense to defend, experience will be key in this game.  I don’t think there is a huge drop off from Bryant to Brown in talent, in fact Brown may even be a better cover safety than Bryant.  However, the leader, and brains, of the Buckeye defense has a broken ankle, and while I don’t expect Brown to fill that role completely, he is a senior and he will be expected to step up in some capacity.

Devin Smith-  Week by week, Smith has been turning in to a legit, big time wide receiver.  He’s already recorded 20 receptions, for 335 yards, and 5 touchdowns through 5 games, averaging 16.6 yards per catch.  Last year Smith had 30 receptions and 6 touchdowns for the whole season!  He’s not just a deep threat anymore, he is developing in to a real wide receiver.  His routes have been sharp, and his ability to burn coverage deep, has opened up the short curls and outs underneath.  This guy is becoming a real play-maker and safety valve for Braxton.  His big plays, and consistency, will be needed this week.  Northwestern will provide a very hostile environment, and as Buckeye fans witnessed Saturday in the first half, Herman wants to take deep shots early and often.  If Smith can reel in one, or two, of those deep balls they may be able to tame that atmosphere.

Now that Smith is executing sharp quick routes, expect his routes to evolve in to double moves, which will drive secondaries nuts.  Northwestern’s defense is already pretty bad, if Smith can continue to provide consistent play for this offense, and also hit a home run once or twice, expect him to have a monster day Saturday.

B1G Power Rankings- Week 5

1.) Ohio State (5-0)- Beat Wisconsin 31-24. OSU had a great win over a great team and the atmosphere was electric. This team may be the best team OSU has seen in a very long time if not ever. Let that statement soak in for a few minutes. Yep I said it. The Offense and STs IMO are the best we have ever had. The defense is much better than most want to admit. Coaching is an A+. This team could be very special if they continue to play as they have for the rest of the season.

2.) Northwestern (4-0)- Bye Week. Plays host to The Ohio State University Buckeyes. In what may be a precursor to the actual B1G CCG.

3.) Iowa (4-1)- Beat Minnesota 23-7. Dominated their rivals to win the Floyd of Rosedale Pig Trophy. This team is a 3 point loss to a really good Northern Illinois team to being 5-0. They may very well be the best team in the legends.

4.) Wisconsin (3-2)- Lost to Ohio State 31-24. Wisconsin is a very talented team. Jarred Abbrederis and Chris Borland are All B1G for sure. Joel Stave really impressed me with his ability to make good and quick decisions and passing skills. They are probably the 2nd best team in the B1G right now.

5.) Minnesota (4-1)- Lost to Iowa 23-7. The Gophers didn’t play very well. Only getting 165 yards of offense and 7 points on offense. Their defense didn’t play much better but there is still some hope for the season heading into their match-up with the Wolverines this weekend.

6.) Penn State (3-1)- Bye Week. Plays at Iowa this week.

7.) Illinois (3-1)- Beat Miami of Ohio 50-14. Completely dominated the RedHawks which doesn’t say much but Nathan Scheelhaase has been playing great this year so far.

8.) Nebraska (3-1)- Bye Week. Play against Illinois this week.

9.) Michigan (4-0)- Bye Week. Play against Minnesota this week.

10.) Michigan State (3-1)- Bye Week. Play at Iowa this weekend.

11.) Indiana (2-2)- Bye Week. Play Penn State this week.

12.) Purdue (1-4)- Lost to Northern Illinois 55-24. Another tough loss for the really horrible Boilermakers. It will be impossible for them to move out of last place this season IMO.

B1G Week Five Review: Making a Statement

Week five signaled the last of non-conference play for the B1G (except for the bizarre Wisconsin-BYU match-up later in the season) and the beginning of conference play. It was pretty easy to follow the conference this week, being there was only four games. While everyone was focusing on the Ohio State-Wisconsin game (which lived up to its hype), three other games took place. They weren’t exactly thrillers, but they taught us a little bit more about each team. And this is important because the B1G is pretty muddled right now, with no clear pecking order after Ohio State at the top. Let’s take a look at what happened:

Illinois 50 Miami (OH) 14

Illinois was expected to win this game big and they did just that against Miami on Saturday. The Fighting Illini pretty much did whatever they felt like doing in this game. Quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase shredded the Red Hawks’ defense, throwing for nearly 300 yards and five touchdowns. Miami didn’t score until late in the third quarter on a Austin Boucher touchdown pass to Rokeem Williams. It was 43-0 until this point. Illinois finishes 3-1 in non-conference play and will start their B1G season on the road against Nebraska this weekend.

Northern Illinois 55 Purdue 24

From one blowout to another, this game was also never in doubt. Northern Illinois took control from the start of this game and never gave Purdue a chance. The Huskies of course were led by star quarterback Jordan Lynch, who had no problem dissecting the Boilermakers’ offense. Lynch completed 18 of 25 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for a touchdown. Northern Illinois’ defense also picked off Purdue quarterbacks four times in this game. Purdue yanked starting quarterback Rob Henry in the second half and gave backup Danny Etling an extended look. Etling threw for 241 yards to Henry’s 130 yards, raising the question of a quarterback change in West Lafayette. What a mess for the Boilermakers!

Iowa 23 Minnesota 7

The first two games above were expected to be lopsided in one team’s favor. But this one took everyone off guard! Unfortunately I didn’t get to watch this game live because DirecTV would rather shove a Florida State-Boston College game down my throat and everyone just loves watching ACC games here in Ohio. Back to the game: These two teams appeared even on paper. Then Iowa came out and demonstrated they were clearly the superior team. Minnesota came into the game running the ball pretty well, but the Hawkeyes defense shut them completely down. The Golden Gophers ran the ball 27 times for only 30 yards and zero touchdowns. Ouch! On the flip side, Iowa ran the ball all over a Minnesota defense that looked stout up until this game. Star running back Mark Weisman ran 24 times for 147 yards and basically did Mark Weisman things (But didn’t score a touchdown. How did this happen?). He’s seriously one of the most underrated running backs in the country and deserves more credit than what he gets. Iowa quarterback Jake Rudock outplayed his counterpart Minnesota quarterback Philip Nelson, something I said would be the key to this game in my preview last week. Rudock threw for 218 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for one touchdown. Nelson threw for only 135 yards and two picks. Has Kirk Ferentz returned Iowa to its former glory days? We’ll continue to find out next weekend when they take on Michigan State.

Three Yards and a Cloud of Links

Good morning Buckeye Nation.

May Hate: Just because its always great to rub it into Mark May of the four letter network when ever he’s wrong in his predictions and he is always wrong when it comes to picking against the Buckeyes. Mark May picked Wisconsin over The Ohio State University and we know how that ended.

Stupid May Buckeyes are for grown ups not for immature haters!!

Airport Termination: This isn’t Buckeye related except maybe Tom Herman’s might get thrown into the mix. Lane Kiffin was fired when the team arrived back in Southern Cali, at the airport. They didn’t even wait for him to make it back to USC facilities, kind of funny karma is.

Scouting Craft: Since Basketball practice has officially started across the NCAA Scott Polacek of Bleacher Report has a nice write up on Aaron Craft and his high school scouting report. I know its football season but I can’t wait to see the Buckeyes hit the hardwood this winter.

Add another Buckeye: PG Asia Doss from the D in Michigan has verbally committed to the Buckeyes. Coach Kevin McGuff keeps reeling in strong recruits for his 2014 class. Welcome to Buckeye Nation Asia glad to have you wear the scarlet and gray.

Buckeye Class: Dom Tiberi is a long time sports anchor for WBNS-TV in Columbus. Tiberi has had to suffer through the tragedy of losing his 21 year old daughter , Maria Elizabeth Tiberi, earlier this month. Before kickoff of the FAMU game there was a moment of silence for the Tiberi family and the Buckeyes wore stickers on their helmets with the letters MT to honor Maria.

Dom returned to the ‘Shoe for the first time since this tragedy and as you can tell by the video it is very moving. Almost all the players on the Buckeye team stopped by and gave him a hug. I have never met Dom but from everything I have heard this gentleman is the nicest and greatest person to be around. Here at MotSaG we would like to send our condolences.

Until next time Buckeye nation…

Busted Badgers: Wisconsin Recap

osuHelmetSaturday night was a great night to be a Buckeye fan. Ohio State played a good game against a good Wisconsin team. Wisconsin played a tough game but Ohio State was able to come out with a “W”. The Buckeyes were able to stop Wisconsin’s heavily powered rushing attack. Overall, the Buckeyes had a good outing Saturday night and were able to improve to 5 and 0.

The Return of Braxton Miller: Braxton Miller came out and did what is he is best at, “winning”. Miller slowly got engaged in the offense. The first couple drives didn’t have him do too much. There were a lot of runs to Hyde. I think this was a great approach for Braxton. Let him slowly get into the game. Towards the second half there was more designed runs for Braxton. Miller definitely used his legs more in the second half. Miller did not seem to be bothered by his MCL. He looked good when running the ball and he was playing very confidently. A big question I had was.. Where was Kenny Guiton? I was thinking we would see a mix of Braxton Miller and Kenny Guiton. But, that is a coach decision and I agree with any decision the staff makes. Miller looked well which is very good to know as a Buckeye fan.

Carlos Carries: Carlos Hyde started the game which was surprising to me. I thought we would see Jordan Hall taking the first couple snaps, than Hyde taking over. But it was great to see Hyde carrying the rushing attack. Hyde was running hard and with energy throughout the whole game. He brought a nice spark to the offense. He helped the Buckeyes get a quick and early lead by having a couple of big carries which led to a TD pass from Miller.

Defense Wins Games: The defense did an amazing job Saturday night. They looked full of energy right from the start. The D-Line was getting into the backfield well. Also, Bryant and Shazier were all over the place. Roby had the only interception in the game. The defense stepped up when it really had to. Holding Wisconsin at the end of the game was a big factor for the Buckeyes win. Wisconsin was throwing all over the Buckeyes in the beginning of the game. But, Ohio State made corrections and slowed down their passing game.

Other thoughts:

  • Dontre Wilson was used a lot as a decoy in motion, but did not carry the ball much.
  • Johnston came through with a lot of good punts giving Wisconsin bad field position.
  • A win gives OSU a huge recruiting plus with all the recruits in attendance.
  • Basil hit a deep 45 yard field goal from the side of the hash.

To sum it up, the Buckeyes win their first prime time game. The only disappointment from the game was Bryant’s injury that leads him out for the year. I can only see the Buckeyes getting better every week. The Bucks silenced the doubters that said they cant beat a good team. One game closer to the big one!

Three Yards and a Cloud of Links

Good morning Buckeye Nation.

B1G Weekend: This match-up versus the Badgers this weekend is B1G. Approximately fifty recruits will be at the ‘Shoe for the game, Lebron James will be there and will speak to the team before the game and its the B1G opener for the Buckeyes oh and fireworks too (both on and off the field!!).

This weekend is the biggest recruiting weekend of the year. Our friends at eleven warriors has a nice post on this weekend recruits and we should hopefully have something ourselves later on it.

LeBron James who is a big Buckeye fan and supporter will be giving a pre-game speech tonight. I’ll be honest here it will be a cool thing for the recruits coming in to share the sideline with the two time NBA champion and he has done a lot for the school. I am still jilted as a Cavs fan at what he did and I’m not sure I can get over it. Yes he had every right to move to any team he wanted to during his free agency and yes it still would have sucked and us Cleveland fans wouldn’t have liked him for just moving but the way he did it. He claimed he wanted to be the first to bring championships to northeast Ohio and knows what us fans have been through and he goes on tv and basically slaps us in the face with his stunt of announcing on national tv “I’m running away to find friends to help me win championships” (paraphrasing of course). I know get over it, I will even if I say I wouldn’t want him back in the wine and gold but he did come back and won championships will the Cavaliers.

Meyer Tweets: I love the fact that Coach Meyer is on twitter. He knows how to get amped up like his tweet he sent out yesterday:

Put me in coach I’m ready to play!!

Speaking of Hype: Our friends at the four letter network has their hype commercial for the game tonight. I’m no way a fan of the network as some of you might know and there are many of us like that out there but I hate to admit they do put out good hype videos for games.

Booms goes the dynamite: Even thought this awesome play came in second in our poll for best play last season (first in my eyes and heart) who could forget the Shazier hit at the goal line against Wisconsin last season. If you don’t remember sit back and enjoy make sure you “Got your popcorn ready”.

Q&A with a Wisconsin Blogger

This week The Ohio State Buckeyes play the hated Wisconsin Badgers. I got to ask Andy Coppens of MadTownBadgers and Bleacher Report some questions about the game tomorrow. I noticed yesterday that he has been working with our friends over at the Buckeye Battle Cry also so I am thankful he worked with us here at MotSaG also.

MotSaG: First off is the team over that BS that cost them the victory against Arizona State?

MadTownBadgers: I think 41-10 just about said it all. Honestly the worries about the Badgers coming out flat or letting that game beat them twice were put to rest on the very first offensive play of the game and it was all good from there for Badger fans, players and coaches.

What will be tough to take is if we run the table the rest of the season and that game is the lone blemish on our resume. Seriously, those officials better not show up in another game we play EVER again.

MotSaG: Does Wisconsin alumni and fans consider the Buckeyes a rival?

MadTownBadgers: Of course we do, after all your guys have falsely accused us of “spitting” on them and all that jazz. Plain and simple this is rivalry built out of both of our teams being good in basketball and football and generally speaking our games have been very entertaining over the past few seasons as well.

Now, I don’t know if you are on the hatred level as much as Minnesota is, especially since we won’t see you as much as we’re used to following this season, but don’t get it twisted—Wisconsin fans loathe O$U.

MotSaG: Do you feel the national media has over looked the Badgers this year?

MadTownBadgers: I think the national media is just waking up to the Badgers really. They slept on the ground game and haven’t given the defense any credit whatsoever (something you guys should be familiar with, huh).

However, most in the UW fan base think of the lack of attention and just par for the course. It wouldn’t matter if your school and ours were in opposite positions record-wise, we’d likely be somewhere in the 15-19 in the rankings anyway. Point being, it’s old hat to be underestimated on the national level. Wisconsin just needs to go out there and control what they can on the field and let the rest take care of itself.

MotSaG: Statistically the Badger’s defense is ranked at 6th in the nation with their rushing defense at 6th and passing efficiency ranked 8th. What is Ohio State’s biggest offensive threat to the Badgers?

MadTownBadgers: I think the biggest offensive threat is the fact that there are so many different targets to worry about. Stop Carlos Hyde, here’s Jordan Hall. Stop Hall, here is Wilson. Honestly, this is a game where both defenses have to be worried about giving up the big play.

At the end of the day I think both defensive coaching staffs would give up 150 yards on the ground to a back if none of the yards came in big plays. That’s the key.

MotSaG: Wisconsin has two of the best running backs in the NCAA with sophomore Melvin Gordon leading the nation and senior James White who is the active career leader. Is the Badgers plan to use and abuse them and slow down the clock to keep the Buckeye’s offense off the field?

MadTownBadgers: I don’t know if you will ever “abuse” those two backs because they won’t ever get enough carries for that to happen. Wisconsin doesn’t run the ball to slow the game down to avoid the other offense getting on the field. The Badgers run the football because it is what they do best.

Like you said, why wouldn’t you be using the nation’s leading rusher on the season and the career leader as well? It wouldn’t make any sense to see us chucking the ball all over the field regardless of who was at quarterback.

MotSaG: What are Wisconsin’s thoughts on sophomore QB Joel Stave?

MadTownBadgers: Stave has done some good things, but ultimately most Badger fans would like to see more of out of him and that’s because they’ve seen glimpses of him being a very good quarterback. He had UW in positions to beat both Nebraska and Michigan State last year, but injuries knocked him out and UW promptly gave up the lead in both those games.

For me, that wasn’t a coincidence as his arm gives the Badgers a weapon no other QB on the roster gives them. The question is can Abbrederis and Stave get on the same page ASAP.

MotSaG: Senior WR Jared Abbrederis (who MotSaG had ranked 12th best B1G player in our preseason series) will be going against senoir CB Bradley Roby will another Badger finally step up and become a threat like Abbrederis?

MadTownBadgers: That will be the million dollar question and one that hasn’t been answered in the past few weeks, months or seasons, really. At the end of the day Abbrederis has a nasty habit of getting behind even double coverage, so that is a plus.

With Kenzel Doe out look for guys like Alex Erickson and Robert Wheelwright (a Columbus native) to be the guys with the biggest opportunity to emerge as a 2nd threat.

MotSaG: What is the condition of TE Jacob Pedersen?

MadTownBadgers: Pedersen appears to be out of this contest and that is really hurtful to the passing game. I mean we are talking about the reigning Tight End of the Year and all. However, the Badgers are plenty loaded at the tight end position, so look for names like Brock DiCicco and Austin Traylor to step up.

MotSaG: Do Badger fans dislike former head coach Bret Bielima as much as Buckeye Nation does?

MadTownBadgers: Who? Enough said.

MotSaG: Why does Bo Ryan always look constipated and angry whenever we see him?

MadTownBadgers: Probably because he’s getting ready to crap all over the Buckeyes….

Here I thought Ryan had that look cause of the cheese or Matta’s boy’s going to 2 final fours, 4 B1G tournament championships, and 5 B1G regular season championships and that’s all since he became coach in 2004!!

MotSaG: What is your prediction for the game?

MadTownBadgers: 28-24 O$U… You can see more of his prediction at Bleacher Report.

Now I’m probably going to sound like a homer but you know what I am so I feel that as close statically these two teams are on paper there is going to be a major butt whooping coming out of the ‘Shoe. While Wisconsin’s defense has been great to this point I don’t feel that they will be able to stop all of the weapons from this explosive offense. My prediction is 35-17 Ohio State.

I would again like to thank Andy for being so gracious and working with me and wish Wisconsin the best of luck the rest of the season, not really but hey trying to be nice here.

If you want to get involved and have questions about upcoming opponents feel free to send them in to me and I can send them on. Email your questions to AskMotSaG@gmail.com or MotSaG@gmail.com. Would love to know your thoughts on this post and hope you enjoyed it.

Putting The Streak On The Line

Congratulations to Ohio State’s players and coaches for the 76-0 walloping administered to Florida A&M. I stated before the game that this was the type of game that Ohio State should not schedule, and 76-0 is pretty clear evidence of that argument. Moving forward into the playoff system, this is the kind of game that will only hurt Ohio State’s playoff chances.

On to B1G conference play and the Wisconsin Badgers.  Wisconsin began conference play last week versus Purdue, and enter into Ohio Stadium confidently after a strong 41-10 victory over the Boilermakers.

Wisconsin will also enter into Ohio Stadium with a sizable number of its roster, specifically fourteen players, who may feel a little extra motivation versus the Buckeyes.  Fourteen Ohioans on Wisconsin’s roster, with only one of them, senior DE Pat Muldoon, who earned a scholarship offer by Ohio State.  The most notable of these Ohioans, senior LB Chris Borland, was not recruited by Ohio State.

This game, as so many other notable Ohio State/Wisconsin games over the past decade, will be decided by which team is able to control the line of scrimmage.  If Ohio State is pushed around by Wisconsin, as they were up in Madison in 2010, it could be a long night for the Buckeyes.  Ohio State’s rebuilt defensive line, as well as linebackers Joshua Perry, Ryan Shazier, and especially Curtis Grant, need to shut down Wisconsin’s running game.

While I understand Coach Urban Meyer stresses how Braxton Miller is still considered the starter, I am of the mindset that perhaps it may be better for Miller, and the team, if Kenny Guiton starts versus Wisconsin.  Coming off two straight weeks of inactivity, and playing against Wisconsin in a nationally televised game, it would not surprise me if Miller may be too hyped for this game and begins to press.  If that were to happen, would Coach Meyer pull Miller for Guiton?  What would that do to Miller’s confidence, and the team’s confidence in Miller?  No sense in creating a quarterback controversy.

Conversely, if Guiton were to start, and have Miller come into the game after a series or two, it may provide an opportunity to ease Miller back into the starting lineup.  Miller may even be able to provide a spark to the offense, as he is much more dangerous with his legs than Guiton.

I will be anxious to see how the Ohio State coaching staff uses its strong arsenal of running backs versus Wisconsin.  Jordan Hall, Carlos Hyde, Rod Smith, as well as true freshmen Dontre Wilson and Ezekiel Elliott.  It could be the debut of Hyde in the backfield, with Hall playing the pivot role.

Another match-up I will keep an eye upon is Wisconsin WR Jared Abbrederis versus Ohio State defensive back Bradley Roby.  I have no idea if the Ohio State coaching staff will isolate Roby on Abbrederis, but I would be surprised if they did not, as Abbrederis is Wisconsin’s top receiving threat.

Wisconsin TE Jacob Pedersen also poses a problem in coverage.  The linebackers will need to come up big here coverage-wise, especially on play action passes by Wisconsin.

This will be my fourth straight Ohio State/Wisconsin game in Ohio Stadium.  My good friend Sean and I attended in 2007, when Ohio State defeated Wisconsin 38-17.  My Dad died in the summer of 2010, and we enjoyed watching Ohio State defeat Wisconsin in 2009, 31-13.  And my brother-in-law Kevin and I were sitting up in C Deck along the 40 yard line as Braxton Miller threw this pass to defeat Wisconsin, 33-29, in 2011.

With Ohio Stadium rocking, all of Ohio State’s top 2014 recruiting targets in the house, and a national television audience, I feel comfortable putting my winning streak on the line in this one.  I am predicting Ohio State 35, Wisconsin 24, with a late Ohio State touchdown sealing the deal.
