Today we’re going old school with the countdown — #53, Randy Gradishar:
Randy played before most of us were twinkles in our daddy’s eyes, but Gradishar was a defensive force for the Buckeyes during the early 70s. (Unfortunately he went on to play in the NFL for the loathsome Denver Broncos, but it was during the pre-Elway years, so we won’t hold that against him.)
Woody Hayes said he was the, “best linebacker he ever coached.” Quite the compliment. The Ohio State end-of-season award for most outstanding linebacker is known as the Randy Gradishar Award.

You might not know this, but Tim Anderson was a High School Wrestling Champion. What’s that? They mentioned it every time he made a play? Huh. I hadn’t noticed.
Wrestling season is still a long way away. Football isn’t. 54 days to go.

Buckeyes fill the draft

As was expected by everyone outside of Austin, Texas, your very own Greg Oden went #1 in this years draft. Long time buddy and Buckeye Hero Mike Conley, Jr. (his dad was an olympic athlete, didntchyaknow?) followed shortly thereafter at #4. Daquan Cook, the pride of Dayton Dunbar, went #21 to Philly and then was quickly traded to Miami. Not a bad racket for Cook — he gets to play with Shaq and D-Wade. Living in Miami can’t be too bad, either. Bienvenido a Miami!
It’s good to see these guys go so high. It’s been said before, but Oden has had a huge positive influence on the Ohio State basketball program. I don’t think we’ve seen the full effect of what he (and the rest of the Thad Five) did for OSU. We can only dream about what they would have done if they stuck together for one more year. Would have been amazing.
I think Oden’s prospects in Portland, however, were slightly diminished with the NY/Portland trade. Zach Randolph may not have been the best influence for Oden, but having a player like Stevie Franchise isn’t going to help either. Oden and Francis are polar opposites — Oden is the consumate team player whereas Francis… isn’t. It was cool that Portland also picked up Josh McRoberts, as he and Oden also played together in their pre-college years. (Who hasn’t Oden played basketball with? I know he played high school and AAU ball for like 14 years, but this is ridiculous!)
Conley Jr. will definitely miss playing with Oden, but Pau Gasol is no slouch when it comes to big men (he’s also a Spainard, which is like +10 to awesomeness right off the bat). He’ll also play with the second ugliest player in basketball (Mike Miller). He was the ugliest player until Joakim Noah got picked up by the Bulls.
Speaking of Noah, I can’t wait until the Human Elbow #2 (Varejao) brings it down to bear on Noah’s pretty face. That will be something to see. It will be an explosion of hair, fugliness, and ethnicity. Awesome.
Now I just hope someone does the right thing and picks up Ron Lewis.

As you may have noticed, we’ve added the Countdown to Kickoff on the side bar so we can all start counting down the days until that first beautiful day in September when we can bask once again in the glorious light that only college football can provide. The healing can finally begin.
We’re also going to start a little daily post of the countdown. It won’t be as elaborate as the one the guys over a Burnt Orange Nation are doing, but it will be fun nonetheless. That should start up in a day or two.
We also hope to ramp up the content as we begin to look at the 2007 football Buckeyes, similar to what we did last year. New faces and holes to be filled, so we’ll have a lot to talk about.
There’s also that NBA Draft thing going on, so we’ll be following that, wishing well for the former Buckeyes that will be doing their basketball thing at the highest level.
NCAA 2008 finally gets it

I originally posted this at my video game site, but I figured some of you college football fans would also be fans of the video game version of our favorite sport and would be interested in some news about Electronic Arts’ newest version of NCAA 200X coming out in July.

I watched the tutorial video in particular and learned that EA has FINALLY put in a “sim to complete” feature into the game. I cannot stress how important this is.
It’s called the “Skip Ahead” feature and it may supplant sliced bread as the greatest thing ever. Using it, you can skip to the either the next possesion, the next quarter or the end of the game. EA calls it the Super Sim feature. Sounds awesome. I call it the “What took you so fricken long feature?” We have been clamoring for this feature for years and they’re finally getting around to putting it into the game. It’s about time.
But it gets even better. You can watch the simulation “real time” and jump in and take over the play calling at any point. You can even resume playing (from what I can tell) at any time during the simulation. This is most excellent.
It simply cements further my belief that EA has a laundry list of “features” that they could put into the game, and they spin the wheel and add a few new features each year, stringing us along every year while we lap up the newest greatest thing. It’s frustrating to be sure, but what can you do?
I skipped out on NCAA 2007 but I’m not skipping out on 2008.

A few thoughts after The Cleveland Cavaliers’ 109-107 double overtime victory:
“Air Apparent,” thy name is LeBron James. And you never looked so good.
I guess Rasheed didn’t want to “play a little harder.” How much harder will they play if McDyess is suspended for game 6?
Is it really a jump shot when Z shoots that 18-footer? I never see his feet leave the ground.
I hope someone snapped a picture of Tayshaun Prince on LeBron’s penultimate dunk in the fourth quarter. He was cowering like a little girl. What a sissy! It was beautiful.
I swear LeBron broke his back in overtime after that foul by Maxiell. He then scored like 71 points in overtime. He healed it with his King powers. I’m a witness.
It’s not just the Buckeyes that owns the team from the state up North right now. The Cavaliers are just embarassing the Pistons, the Tigers have become the Indians’ whipping boys and, in case you forgot, Michigan hasn’t tasted victory against the Buckeyes in years. It’s a great time to be a sports fan in Ohio.
