B1G Weekly Recap: Blowouts The Theme Across B1G Play This Weekend

With just one game decided by less than 21 points, it was the weekend of the blowout in the Big Ten. Maryland’s 20-19 victory over Penn State was the only game of six on Saturday to remain competitive in the second half as well. Ohio State won to remain undefeated in the Big Ten, while Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin all won to remain at one loss in conference play.

Iowa 48, Northwestern 7

Iowa dominated on both offense and defense as they cruised to 3-1 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeye defense held Northwestern to just 75 yards passing and 105 yards rushing. Justin Jackson was the lone bright spot for the Wildcats, rushing for 96 yards and their only score of the game.

Marc Weisman found paydirt three times on the ground to go with 94 yards. Akrum Wadley added 106 yards and a touchdown rushing in the victory. Jake Rudock threw for 239 yards and a touchdown on just 12-19 passing. Northwestern hosts Michigan on Saturday while Iowa takes a trip to Minnesota in a battle of one-loss teams in the Big Ten West.

Maryland 20, Penn State 19

It was a game that’s biggest fireworks came before the coin flip when Maryland’s captains refused to shake hands with the Penn State captains as the two groups approached at midfield. Maryland managed just 194 yards but still pulled off the road victory thanks to a Brad Craddock field goal with less than a minute to play.

The two teams combined for just 75 yards rushing and Penn State turned the ball over four times as the Nittany Lions fell to 1-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State goes to Indiana this weekend and Maryland has a week off to prepare for a visit from Michigan State.

Wisconsin 37, Rutgers 0

Wisconsin threw for just 87 yards but the ground game and defense did more than enough to welcome Rutgers to Camp Randall. Melvin Gordon ran for 128 yards and two touchdowns and Corey Clement complemented Gordon’s efforts with 131 yards and two scores of his own.

The Scarlet Knights managed just 139 yards of total offense (63 passing, 76 rushing) against a Badger defense that has now allowed just 7 points in its last two matchups. Rutgers is idle this week before hosting Indiana and Wisconsin will play at Purdue.

Nebraska 35, Purdue 14

In a game that star running back Ameer Abdullah left early, Nebraska still managed to run all over Purdue to improve to 4-1 in the Big Ten. Tommy Armstrong Jr. stepped up with his feet to add 70 yards on the ground to go with just 118 yards passing on a blustery day in Lincoln.

The Boilermakers actually outgained the Cornhuskers 340-297, but that was because the average starting field position for Nebraska was their own 49-yard line. Purdue has Wisconsin coming in to West Lafayette this weekend while Nebraska has a week off to get ready for their trip to Madison to play the Badgers.

Michigan 34, Indiana 10

It was an easy victory for the Wolverines as they welcomed Indiana into Ann Arbor for a date on Homecoming. Devin Gardner threw for 220 yards and two touchdowns and Drake Johnson had 122 yards and two scores on the ground as the Wolverines rolled to their 19th straight win over the Hoosiers.

Indiana had just 24 yards passing, but Tevin Coleman ran for 100 yards again as he is the only running back in the country to have hit the century mark in every game this season. The Wolverines will take a visit to Northwestern on Saturday and Indiana will play host to Penn State in Bloomington.

Ohio State 55, Illinois 14

In a matchup that turned into a tune-up game for the battle with the Spartans, Ohio State pounded Illinois for a total of 545 yards (249 passing, 296 rushing). J.T. Barrett only played the first half when he led the Buckeyes to a 31-0 halftime advantage behind 167 yards passing and two scores. Cardale Jone came in and threw two TDs of his own in the second half, and Jalin Marshall had a 30-yard rushing touchdown.

The Illini put up just 243 yards of offense while turning the ball over four times. Illinois did not put points on the board until the game was well in hand, 48-0, for Ohio State. Illinois has a week off before welcoming Iowa into Champaign and Ohio State makes the trek up to East Lansing for a de facto Big Ten East Championship Game against Michigan State.

What did you think of the Big Ten’s play this week? Are you ready for the game that will decide the Big Ten East? Let us know what you are looking forward to the most this weekend.

Buckeyes Land Big Time Recruit

I have to start out with I am sorry. I have not put up a commitment post for the last couple of recruits. I have seriously slacked in my coverage of recruiting because of a new job. Thankfully this newest commit was kind enough to commit on my day off so I have no excuse to not put up a post. So let’s make it a great one. Today’s commitment is one that seemed inevitable and then impossible and finally back to inevitable. So while today’s announcement was a foregone conclusion to many recruiting experts it is great none the less. So let’s break down this future Buckeye and see why it is such a big pick up for OSU.

Torrance Gibson committed to become a Buckeye at his school today after his Army All-American Ceremony.

Torrance Gibson is a 6’4″ 200 lbs 5 star QB/Athlete from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Torrance is a Dual-Threat Quaterback with tremendous upside. His athletic ability alone makes some question if he would be a better WR than a QB. He has the speed to outrun the defenses and the agility to make people miss. His throwing ability is underappreciated IMHO. He has a big arm that allows for deep passes. Like many DT QBs though his short to intermediate throws need work. Why throw for 5-10 yards when as a QB you can pull it down and run for 15-20? That is the kind of thing that makes people doubt running QBs. Make no mistake though Torrance Gibson is going to OSU as a QB and will get every chance he can to earn his spot as the starting QB. I also am not a moron Coach Meyer and his staff does a great job taking guys and putting in the best spots to succeed. They turned a Fullback into a Linebacker. A Tight end into a OLman. Sam Hubbard may play every position before he leaves OSU. Torrance will compete to be a QB but has the athletic ability to succeed no matter where he plays and that is why landing him is so important.

247sports ranks Torrance a 4 star the 62nd best player in the country and the 6th best athlete in the country. Rivals ranks Torrance a 4 star and the 103rd best player in the country. Scout ranks him a 4 star and the 45th best player in the country. ESPN ranks Torrance a 5 star and the 13th best player in the country and the 2nd best athlete in the country.

Ohio State-Illinois: In Depth Recap

The Buckeyes wiped the floor from start to finish with an Illinois team that at times looked like an FCS team on Saturday night. The Illini came out moving the ball very efficiently in their up tempo offense until Darron Lee intercepted quarterback Reilly O’Toole off a deflection. J.T. Barrett looked extremely hesitant to put weight on his sprained MCL in the first couple of drives leading to him over throwing several passes. Luckily for Barrett, freshman Curtis Samuel was more than happy to pick up the yardage and scores on the ground for the Buckeyes.

Once Barrett found Devin Smith on a 32 yard touchdown pass to close out the first he looked much more comfortable from then on. His comfort level was key for the Buckeyes success in this game since it was very evident that Coach Herman and Meyer wanted to put a heavy emphasis on the passing game. This would be due to the visit next week to East Lansing. Last year the Buckeye receivers were man handled and looked pedestrian in the loss to the Spartans.

Also last week, the offensive line looked shaky in pass protection. Both areas of concern seemed to be worked out for the most part against the Illini. Barrett finished the first half going 15 of 24 for 167 yards and two touchdowns. The Buckeyes took their 31-0 lead in to half time and Cardale Jones took over at QB in the second half.

Jones looked as competent as he usually does for Ohio State. Meaning, in my opinion, if Barrett goes down next week versus Sparty Ohio State will most likely lose. Jones is competent versus Illinois but envisioning him versus Michigan State or any real defense made me lose an extreme amount of confidence in this team. Rant and rave about his arm and size all you want but his decision making is average, he does not process information nearly as fast as Barrett, and he relies more on his legs than Miller did.

As for the defense, they look to be coming in to their own. Ash seems to be finding a really good rhythm with his blitz calls, coverages, and substitutions. They have a legitimate star in Joey Bosa who could go down as one of the top 5 defensive players in Buckeye history if he maintains this excellent play.

Personally, as good of a game Joey Bosa had, I thought Darron Lee and Steve Miller played even better. Maybe that has more to do with expectation levels from them, but Lee should be a first team all Big Ten linebacker in my opinion. He is a jack of all trades and Ash is really beginning to use this kid to terrorize defenses in every shape and form.

Speaking of terrorizing, Steve Miller is beginning to do just that regardless of who the Buckeyes are playing. Replacing Noah Spence was never going to be easy and frankly Miller hasn’t done that at all. But what Miller has done is found his role in this defensive line and he has embraced it. He seems to be the relentless worker on this defense and is dedicated to do anything his coaches need him to do. Whether it is run defense, pass rush, or chase down screens, Miller has been doing it all lately. Hats off to him and Coach Johnson for putting in the hard work to round off this dangerous defensive line.

The secondary deserves their fair share of love as well. The success of Ash’s secondaries starts with strong safety play and the Buckeyes got just that from Powell and Bell Saturday night. Both players have been asked to do the large majority of their learning on the job and they have done very well. Saturday night both players excelled in coverage and are beginning to round out in to a very nice safety duo.

As for the corners, Grant, Apple, and Reeves, they have their moments when they can give you a scare with how aggressive they are, but the more experience they get the wiser they seem to be with when and where to use that aggressiveness. Reeves fits perfectly in that nickel corner spot, Apples length bothers any receiver he faces, and Grant is a very athletic and aggressive corner who has a big upside if he keeps improving. I really think these corners had a pretty good night on Saturday and have had pretty good games in recent weeks.

It was also key to see Meyer’s special teams take care of business Saturday night. Kicker Sean Nuernberger was able to go 2/2 which could be key if the game next Saturday comes down to the wire. The kick coverage team was also able to swallow up one of the best returners in the country Saturday night which should be even more of a confidence builder after an O.K. performance versus Penn State.

Saturday seemed to be the perfect dose of medicine for this young team heading in to the dog fight in East Lansing. The Buckeyes were able to shore up offensive line issues, get players back from injury some confidence and keep them healthy, get depth players play time, and come out with a lot of confidence. The Buckeyes had a character building win at Penn State last week, this week was a confidence building week, next week is the biggest game of this team’s young career. They look ready and so are we here at MOTSAG. Keep an eye out for all of our previews and build up to the game this Saturday in East Lansing.

Go Bucks! Beat Sparty!

MotSaG B1G Power Poll Week 10

It’s November we gained an extra hour of sleep so we can feel well rested while watching some great games coming up this month. Rumor has it might be a pretty big one this weekend, big enough to lure that four letter network to do their college football show from a B1G campus. The Big Ten now has seven bowl eligible teams.

1. Michigan State (7-1,4-0) The B1G Champs are coming off a bye well rested and well coached going to be a tough Sparty team to beat in East Lansing for the Buckeyes
Last Week: #1
Next Game: Ohio State

2. Ohio State (7-1,4-0) Buckeyes tie their consecutive conference win record at 20 in a row, win number 21 will be a tall order facing Sparty in East Lansing. This could be the biggest conference game of the season including the championship game.
Last Week: #2
Next Game: @Michigan State

3. Nebraska (8-1,3-1) Adullah gets hurt and the Cornhuskers keep rolling, this is the perfect week for a bye
Last Week: #3
Next Game: Bye

4. Wisconsin (6-2,3-1) The Badgers look like they are starting to roll after shutting out the Scarlet Knights. QB Stave only had 81 yards passing but the running back duo of Gordon and Clement had 259 yards.
Last Week: #4
Next Game: @Purdue

5. Iowa (6-2,3-1) The Hawkeyes are another team looking like they might be putting it together to make their push for the West division spot in the B1G Championship game.
Last Week: #7
Next Game: @Minnesota

6. Maryland (6-2,3-1) The Terps kick a field goal with less than a minute left in the game to win in a hostile Happy Valley. Maryland becomes bowl eligible in their first year in the B1G.
Last Week: #6
Next Game: Bye

7. Minnesota (6-2,3-1) After a week of licking their wounds the Gophers look to bounce back and take some charge in the mess up top of the West division.
Last Week: #5
Next Game: Iowa

8. Rutgers (5-4,1-4) The Scarlet Knights have really been struggling in B1G play their lone loss coming against TTUN. They only need one more win to become bowl eligible and they will have to wait two weeks to see if its possible.
Last Week: #8
Next Game: Bye

9. Northwestern (3-5,2-3) Getting thumped by Iowa and their ground game wasn’t fun for the Wildcats but look for a bounce back game as they struggle to try to become bowl eligible.
Last Week: #9
Next Game: Michigan

10. Penn State (4-4,1-4) Back to back losses in Happy Valley never a good thing for the Nittany Lions, maybe a road game will help them straighten things out but injuries are really showing their lack of depth issues.
Last Week: #10
Next Game: @Indiana

11. Michigan (4-5,2-3) The Wolverines are really just playing out the rest of the season for pride. Athletic director Dave Brandon resigned and now its looking more and more like Brady Hoke is just a lame duck coach in his final month as the head coach in Ann Arbor
Last Week: #13
Next Game: @Northwestern

12. Purdue (3-6,1-4) The Boilermakers have so much more work to do to improve and injuries are mounting up.
Last Week: #11
Next Game: Wisconsin

13. Illinois (4-5,1-4) The thumping the Fighting Illini took from the Buckeyes isn’t helping Tim Beckman look comfortable saving his job this season.
Last Week: #12
Next Game: Iowa

14. Indiana (3-5,0-4) The Hoosiers remain the only team to not win a conference game and they beat the runner up SEC champs Missouri seems strange doesn’t it. Take that four letter network.
Last Week: #14
Next Game: Penn State

Ohio State 55 Illinois 14- Quick Reaction

The verdict: The Buckeyes killed a team they should have on a day when many of the top teams in the nation struggled against weaker opponents.

Man of the match: Ohio State Defensive line– Cop out time! The group caused complete chaos in the Illini backfield the whole game.

Offensive player of the game: Devin Smith- Two touchdowns and an amount of swagger that can never be achieved by the average human.

Defensive player of the game: Joey Bosa– How many big plays can one man make as a defensive lineman?

Surprise player of the game: Steve Miller– Not to be overshadowed by the legend Bosa, the senior had numerous disruptions in the backfield.

Goof of the week: Jacoby Boren– On the day after Halloween, the center completely whiffed on a block against a ghost… The young man fell down trying to takeout an invisible man on the Buckeye’s first touchdown run by Curtis Samuel.

What it means: Not quite sure to be honest. Ohio State dominated an inferior team on both sides of the ball but J.T. Barrett’s accuracy and knee issues are a big question mark headed into next week. The freshmen cannot afford to miss the 4 or 5 wide open receivers he missed tonight against the Spartans. Ohio State has the talent to pull off a victory but the best effort of the season will be necessary.

On Deck: The MSU Spartans– The Big Ten East will almost certainly come down to one game and College Gameday will be headed to East Lansing. Doesn’t get any bigger than this…

Let’s get excited
