A Look Around The Country

A Look Around the Country

I don’t know what to think of the nation’s “best” teams so far this season. Once again, the top ranked teams in the country struggled this past weekend. It just doesn’t make sense. I can’t remember the last time I’ve watched a college football season without thinking a certain team has all the goods to be National Champs. Right now, there isn’t a single team that I’m confident in to run the table. Florida State won in overtime without Infamous Jameis. Alabama struggled with a Florida team who barely beat Kentucky last week. Oregon beat Washington State by a touchdown. Oklahoma struggled briefly against West Virginia (who is better than people think). Hell, Indiana beat Missouri. Indy-freaking-Ana beat the defending SEC East Champs! I still can’t believe it happened. But that’s the kind of year it’s been. I wouldn’t be surprised if a local flag football team beat Oregon. So, let’s get into the week that was while also looking into this weekend’s slate of games.

Notable Games Last Week

Auburn 20 Kansas State 14

Much like most of last season, Auburn was able to escape defeat. This time doing it in Manhattan, Kansas in what many people considered one of the biggest games in Kansas State Football history. But the Wildcats continued to shoot themselves in the foot and lost a very winnable game. The defending SEC Champs (and a team I’ve had ranked in my top 4 since the preseason) have struggled so far this season. Eventually, they’re luck is going to run out.

Oklahoma 45 West Virginia 33

A game which was tied at halftime led to the Sooners pulling away, something Alabama couldn’t exactly do back in Week One. I firmly believe as the season goes on, we’ll start to see how good of a team the Mountaineers really are. But Oklahoma is better and right now they have a case to be number one.

Florida State 23 Clemson 17

The broadcast started with Jimbo Fisher having to send his star quarterback to the locker room because apparently not dressing for a game your suspended for is something Jameis never considered. It’s tough to figure out what this means because the guy who will be leading the Noles the rest of the way* wasn’t playing. But teams will use this to their advantage to scout against the rest of that team. If you stop Jameis, you can beat Florida State.

*As long as he doesn’t do something stupid again.

Nebraska 41 Miami (FL) 31

In the battle of “Who’s Back?” Ameer Abdullah and the Huskers didn’t disappoint. In case you haven’t noticed (and if you’ve been watching ESPN, you haven’t) Bo Pelini has them at 4-0 with Illinois coming to Lincoln this week. A win there would give them a 5-0 record headed into their game at Michigan State. I’m giddy to watch that one already. And the way this season has been going, anything can happen in East Lansing that night.

Ohio State (Bye)

The Buckeyes struggled against Bye Week as they dropped in the polls for the second consecutive week. The SEC consistently plays better against them.

Big Games This Week

UCLA at Arizona State

Both teams roll into this game with an unblemished record and the winner of this one will have a leg up in the Pac 12 South Division going forward. Arizona State is without QB Taylor Kelly but the home crowd in Tempe should make up for that. Winner of this one could very well be playing Oregon in the Pac 12 title game in December. But UCLA has been flirting with a loss all season. Sun Devils with the upset.

Thursday, September 25 at 10:00pm on FOX Sports One

Maryland at Indiana

Who would have thought that this game would hold any sort of significance in the Big Ten race in 2014. The 3-1 Terrapins take on the 2-1 Hoosiers in a Big Ten East showdown. With the amount of parity in college football this season, there’s a possibility that this could at least play a role in the East. But I’ll be honest in saying it’s an extreme longshot. However, when was the last time the Hoosiers ever played a significant game in something other than basketball? Might as well get the most out of it now.

Saturday, September 27 at 1:30pm on Big Ten Network

Missouri at South Carolina

Missouri is coming off of a disastrous loss to a basketball school while the Gamecocks barely beat a middle of the road Sun Belt team in Vanderbilt. Sure, the SEC is the best conference in the country and there’s no arguing that. But they are not as good as the south says they are. The SEC East is WIDE OPEN with these two teams along with Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia all in the mix. In my humble opinion, this division is no better than the Big Ten East. I got Spurrier in this one.

Saturday, September 27 at 7:00pm on ESPN

Cincinnati at Ohio State

All of the talk about Chris Ash’s new secondary will be put to the ultimate test on Saturday evening as former 5 star QB and Notre Dame Enrollee, Gunner Kiel comes into the Shoe. The Buckeye defense will be the X factor in this game, and if the D-line can get after Kiel, then the Bearcats should be in for a long night. They gave up 34 points to Toledo so I know we can score against them. However, I’m not sure I like our chances if we get into a shootout with them. But I don’t see that happening. Buckeyes win by 17.

Saturday, September 27 at 6:00pm on Big Ten Network

Michigan Update

Wow, I’m speechless about this team so far. They’ve gone from bad to worse. After losing to Utah 26-10 in front of about 12 people on Saturday night (to be fair, they had a weather delay) they’re season is all but over. Changes at quarterback could be coming as well as head coach. Brady Hoke will probably ride out the rest of the season, but there’s no way he’s coaching for them next year. The rest of this season has to be about getting the right coach in there to turn this once legendary program into its old self. Jim Harbaugh? Les Miles? Doug Nussmeier? Fielding Yost? Something has to change in Ann Arbor. I’m sick of beating a crappy Wolverine team each year. It’s much more fun to do that when their good. They play Minnesota for the Little Brown Jug at 3:30 on ESPN2. I have the Gophers by a touchdown.

Heisman Watch

Marcus Mariota, Oregon

21/25 passing for 329 yards and 5 touchdowns in 38-31 win over Washington State. The Ducks struggled this week against the Cougars but they can thank Mariota for the W. He’s my clear favorite right now.

Todd Gurley, Georgia

6 carries, 73 yards in 66-0 win over Troy. He was taken out early because of the horrible play of juggernaut, Troy. But he may be the best RB in the country.

Melvin Gordon, Wisconsin

13 carries for 253 yards (19.5 yards per carry!!)  and 5 touchdowns in 68-17 win over Bowling Green. That’s an insane stat line, even if it’s against a MAC team. He has to be in this discussion.

Rising Star

Ameer Abdullah, Nebraska

35 carries for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns in 41-31 win over Miami (FL). He’s an underrated player because of the lack of coverage of the Big Ten. Abdullah has to enter this discussion because of his extraordinary skill set, especially in the receiving game. We’ll see what he’s made of next week against Michigan State.

Dropping Fast

Jameis Winston, Florida State

You know why.

My Playoff if the Season Ended Today

  1. Oregon (beat Washington State 38-31, plays Arizona next week) The Ducks escaped the upset bid by the Cougars. Good teams find a way to win. And this is still a great team. They stay at the top.
  2. Oklahoma (beat West Virginia 45-33, plays TCU next week) The Sooners struggled in the first half in a hostile environment. But the cream rose to the top in the second half. It took Alabama a lot longer to do that in an SEC environment in Georgia. Sooners are team to be reckoned with.
  3. Florida State (beat Clemson 23-17, plays NC State this week) The Seminoles are a one-dimensional team. Once someone figures that out, Florida State will go down.
  4. Alabama (beat Florida 42-21, plays Ole Miss next week) The Crimson Tide finally earn a spot in my top 4. In a weaker than usual SEC, they have the best chance of being in the playoff. They can thank Amari Cooper for that. Nobody in America can cover him.

Just Missed the Cut

  1. Baylor
  2. Auburn
  3. Notre Dame
  4. Texas A&M
  5. Michigan State
  6. Ole Miss
  7. Ohio State

A-Z 2014 Buckeyes So Far Part 2

Finally that daggum bye week is over and OSU fans won’t have to deal with a Saturday of watching jerks from other schools play instead of the Bucks until next season.

What’s that, there is another one in two weeks?

Fine, I’m not even going to put any effort into this post, there is no point. Bye’s really suck the fun out of me (phrasing)…

Here is the rest of the A- Z Buckeye thoughts:

Part 1 for you “Forgetful Franks”: A-Z Part 1

Nobody throws to baby on the corner: Has Doran Grant even played a down this year? Honestly, I don’t remember him making a play so far- which is awesome. He is going all Shawn Springs- 0 interceptions yet still first team All-American- and is making himself more cash every week (draft stock not boosters you punks). Opposing quarterbacks haven’t really tested the cornerback at all in his final year so far.  The physical specimen will have his money making hands full this weekend against Cincinnati.

On the way Holme: At risk of being one of those ding-bat Ohio State fans that believes every freshmen is Woody’s gift to Earth and every senior plays like Betty White, I believe Jalyn Holmes is poised to take over opposite the gorgeous-Joey Bosa at defensive end pretty soon. Steve Miller and Rashad Frazier have been pretty average if you ask me and the freshmen’s talent maybe too much to keep off the field. Am I judging Holmes based off of one solid game against Kent State? I guess so, sometimes when you know you know.

Picktown Pride: Being a Pickerington child myself, I am very proud to say that the Ohio State starting offensive line is 40% P-town alumni with Pat Elflein and Jacoby Boren. It’s an awesome time for us east siders. Upper white middle class is going to take over NCAA football, you heard it here first.

Quit Scheduling Navy: Especially the first week of the season. Urban seemed none to pleased in post-game interviews and has said that a few early enrolled freshmen were only used as Navy wingbacks for the scout team from April to the start of the season. Why schedule a game that forces you to waste a kid’s first few months of practice for one game that you get no credit for winning? It’s even more maddening when you hear Bud Foster say that VA Tech was planning their surprise “bear” defense against Ohio State since spring ball while Ohio State had no time to plan for the Hokies. Speaking of…

Rye goes down smoothest: Almost the end of the month and many Buckeye fans are still not over the Virginia Tech debacle but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a learning experience.  Being an alcoholic on 12 Saturdays a year, September 6th taught me that the best way to force yourself to go to sleep after a maddening night is to drink Bulleit Rye Bourbon on the rocks until your eyes shut. It worked but my liver hasn’t spoken to me since.

S.S.S.: The Schedule switch stings in hindsight. Ohio State moving the VA Tech game up from week 3 to week 2 may have cost the Buckeyes a loss in my biased mind. With as many youngsters and as much time that was spent preparing for the goofy navy squad, it’s tough to not make the assumption that another week to prepare for the Hokies wouldn’t have made a world of difference. With that said, Frank Beamer’s squad had just as many young guys as the Buckeyes and Ohio State should not be making excuses for why they weren’t prepared for Virginia Tech… ever.

Thank heaven my wife is an English teacher: I’m privileged to get to write about Ohio State for the motsag but the only reason that happens is because a woman much smarter than me edits my gibberish before it is edited by my bosses. Oh what they would think if they saw my first drafts….

Under utilized: I’m sick and tired of  saying it- get the ball to the tight ends. Ohio State started doing it against Kent State last week but this needs to be an every week occurrence. Tim Hinton said yesterday that Jeff Heuerman is one of the best in the country at his position and some scouts feel he can be one of the top tight ends taken in next years draft. I’m ready to finally see why.

Virginia Tech- This is why we can’t give you nice wins: Losses to East Carolina and Georgia Tech after winning your biggest road game in school history make me giggle. That’s what you get when you put all your spring and fall camps into one game (yup still not over it). Michael Brewer was credited with having a terrific game against the Bucks, and not to toot my own horn, but I didn’t see it. Despite some nice scrambles and a solid td pass, he didn’t even throw for 200 yards and had three turnovers against Ohio State. He’s been the same in the last two losses.

Von Bell is a peach: The sophmore star from Georgia looks like he is going to be a big time playmaker in the next couple years. For the first time since the beginning of last season, Ohio State has a promising secondary.

When will they commit?: Damien Harris and Torrance Gibson are two crazy athletes who many consider to be Buckeye leans. The longer they wait the more nervous the leader gets, but most recruiting experts believe Ohio State is still in good shape with these two blue chippers.

X: Piss off I tried.

You can catch him: My boy Dontre Wilson had a decent start to the 2014 season yet a lot of Ohio State fans are expecting more. He has been so close to breaking the big one yet keeps getting tripped up. He’s averaging 5 yards a carry and 20 yards a catch, it just seems he hasn’t found the vision to become truly elite. Some really stupid fans will tell you that they are ready to give up on the sophmore h-back from Texas for others behind him; just laugh it off and imagine how bad Michigan would love to have an offensive back that averages 11 yards a touch.

Zeke needs to be the man: I’m ready for Ezekiel Elliot to get 15-20 carries a game. As much as I love Curtis Samuel, Zeke’s 225 pound frame will be more reliable between the tackles once the physical Big Ten season starts.  I think the 180 pound Samuel will be an outstanding compliment to the bigger Elliott. It’d just be nice to see the big boy run like he’s got 40 pounds on his backup.

Finally, after what seemed to be a ten year weekend, we get some real football back Saturday. I’m still upset we have to deal with another one of these bye’s so quickly but at least we aren’t UC fans. The Bearcats didn’t play the first two weeks during the season and I don’t know how their fans survived (oh yea I do, all of their fans are big time bandwagon dickweeds). If that was me I would have definitely looked at freezing myself or googled how to induce a two week coma.

Hopefully that the positives on this list will remain as such and the negatives will be forgotten quicker than the ice bucket challenge.

Who knows, maybe come December, we can finally forget about 9/6/14. I don’t know if I want to let it go though. I feel like heading down to the shoe this weekend all dressed in white and smoking cigarettes while following the happy nut fans around to remind them of that horrible night. We need to make sure they never forget- Leftovers style…

B1G Weekly Recap: Conference Shines Bright in Week Four

After two consecutive weeks of subpar performances by the Big Ten, the conference came up huge this week, winning all but one of their week four matchups. As a whole, the Big Ten went 12-1, including four victories over Power 5 conference schools. The lone defeat is one I’m sure most Buckeye fans enjoyed quite a bit, as Brady Hoke’s hot seat got turned up a couple degrees with a home loss to Utah.

Iowa 24, Pittsburgh 20

A halftime quarterback change spurred the Hawkeyes on to victory on the road against the Panthers. Down 17-7 at half, Kirk Ferentz replaced Jake Rudock, who had gone 5-10 for 80 yards and a touchdown and interception in the first half, with C.J. Beathard. Beathard finished the game 7-8 for 98 yards in the air.

Iowa running back Mark Weisman ran for 88 yards on the day and scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half, including the game-winner with 6:56 left in the game. The Hawkeyes open conference play next weekend when they travel to Purdue.

Michigan State 73, Eastern Michigan 14

Michigan State finally got back on the winning track after losing to Oregon two weeks ago and having a bye last week. It did not take long for the Spartans to assert their dominance over their in-state opponents, with Sparty outgaining the Eagles 320-1 in the first half. Yes, one. Eastern Michigan gained one yard in an entire half. Connor Cook threw for two touchdowns and ran for another in the first half.

Delton Williams ran for 103 yards and three scores in the blowout. The 73 points were the most Michigan State had scored since 1989 when they recorded a 76-14 victory over Northwestern. The Spartans close out their nonconference slate with a home game next week against Wyoming.

Northwestern 24, Western Illinois 7

Despite being outgained 376-283, Northwestern finally put a “W” up on the board after starting the season with losses to California and Northern Illinois. Freshmen running backs Solomon Vault, 31 yards and two TDs, and Justin Jackson, 92 yards and one score, led the way for the Wildcats, who only managed 117 yards through the air.

Ohio native and current Wildcat defensive lineman Ifeadi Odenigbo forced three fumbles and recovered another as he helped hold the Leathernecks to no points after their first drive. Northwestern goes to Happy Valley to take on Penn State in their Big Ten opener next week.

Purdue 35, Southern Illinois 13

With their victory over Southern Illinois, Purdue improved to 2-2 on the season and have doubled their win total from 2013. Danny Etling put in another solid performance, throwing for 198 yards and two scores while running for another. The Salukis turned the ball over twice in the first quarter and the Boilermakers took advantage, scored touchdowns after both, and never looked back.

Danny Anthrop caught five passes for 106 yards and a touchdown for Purdue as they go into conference play on a winning note. The Boilermakers host Iowa next weekend in both teams’ Big Ten opener.

Wisconsin 68, Bowling Green 17

Don’t look now, but Melvin Gordon is slowly building his Heisman resume as the Badgers destroyed MAC foe Bowling Green. Gordon spear-headed the Wisconsin rushing attack that set a Big Ten record with 644 rushing yards on the day. Gordon himself ran for 253 yards and five touchdowns…on 13 carries.

In addition to Gordon, the Badgers had two others, Tanner McEvoy and Corey Clement, ran for over 100 yards while Dare Ogunbowlale nearly got there with 94 yards of his own. Wisconsin improved to 2-1 and will host South Florida on Saturday.

Maryland 34, Syracuse 20

Maryland improved to 3-1 on the season with a win on the road over the Orange in the Carrier Dome. The Terrapins were outgained by 220 yards on the day, but took advantage of Syracuse mistakes to earn the victory. William Likely returned an interception 88 yards for a touchdown with less than four minutes left in the first half to put Maryland up 31-13 at the break.

C.J. Brown threw for 280 yards and two scores as Maryland got revenge for their 20-3 loss to the Orange last season in College Park. The Terrapins will start their Big Ten schedule next week with a trip to Bloomington to take on Indiana.

Utah 26, Michigan 10

Is a quarterback controversy brewing in Ann Arbor? Devin Gardner was 14-26 for 148 yards and two interceptions before being replaced in the second half by Shane Morris, who did not do much better. Morris, who came in before the lightning delay and finished the game off after the game resumed, completed just four of his 13 attempts for 42 yards and an interception of his own.

Kaelin Clay scored the first touchdown of the day when he returned a punt 66 yards for a score, but that was not the most notable part of the play. After reaching the end zone, Clay struck the Heisman pose in the same end that Desmond Howard did two decades earlier. Brady Hoke will try to cool off his hot seat when Minnesota comes to the Big House Saturday.

Rutgers 31, Navy 24

Rutgers relied on the run game to beat Navy, and lost their number one running back for the season in the process. Paul James had 96 yards and a touchdown on seven carries before injuring himself in the second quarter. James later learned that he had torn his ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

Justin Goodwin picked up the slack, rushing for 104 yards and a score, while quarterback Gary Nova added two rushing touchdowns of his own as the Scarlet Knights improved to 3-1 in 2014. Rutgers will host the Tulane Green Wave next week.

Penn State 48, Massachusetts 7

Christian Hackenberg only threw for 179 yards, but Penn State had a balanced attack as they finished with 236 passing yards and 228 rushing yards to put the Minutemen away. Bill Belton and Zach Zwinak each scored two rushing touchdowns.

The Nittany Lion defense came to play as well, holding UMass to just three rushing yards as a team. Penn State will look to improve to 2-0 in the Big Ten when Northwestern comes to town Saturday.

Minnesota 24, San Jose State 7

Minnesota was without starting quarterback Mitch Leidner for this one, but backup Chris Streveler filled in admirably as he ran for 161 yards and a touchdown. He needed every last one of those yards as he only completed one pass to a teammate on the day for just seven yards. He was also intercepted once.

David Cobb ran for 207 yards and two scores to lead the Golden Gophers to victory. Minnesota opens Big Ten play next week against the Wolverines.

Illinois 42, Texas State 35

Illinois could very well be 0-4 on the season. Instead, they’ve used fourth quarter comebacks in each of their three home games to stay unbeaten in Memorial Stadium in 2014. The Illini needed 17 points in the final frame this week to come from behind and defeat the Bobcats. Texas State led by as much as 15 points late in the second quarter before the comeback began.

Josh Ferguson ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns while Wes Lunt threw for 266 yards and two more scores as Illinois finished nonconference play at 3-1. The Illini will look to start conference with a win when they travel to Lincoln next week to take on Nebraska.

Indiana 31, Missouri 27

In the stunner of the weekend, Indiana beat defending SEC West champion Missouri in Columbia just a week after being beaten by Bowling Green on the road. D’Angelo Roberts ran for 65 yards and two scores, including the game-winner with 22 seconds left.

Nate Sudfeld threw for 252 yards and a TD as the Hoosiers knocked off previously unbeaten Missouri. Indiana will welcome Maryland to the Big Ten next week when they play host to the Terrapins.

Nebraska 41, Miami (FL) 31

Ameer Abdullah continued his own Heisman campaign in impressive fashion as he led the Cornhuskers to a victory on the night they celebrated the 20th anniversary of their 1994 national championship team. Abdullah carried the ball 35 times for 229 yards and two touchdowns.

Tommy Armstrong Jr. threw for 113 yards and two scores of his own while adding 96 yards on the ground as Nebraska improved to 4-0 on the young season. Nebraska opens conference play next week at home against Illinois.

What was your favorite part of the B1G weekend the conference had? Was Indiana’s victory the most impressive win the conference had, or did Nebraska going to 4-0 take home top honors? Let us know what you thought of the conference’s performance this week and how you think the Big Ten race will turn out as we head into conference play.

A Look Around the Country

Notable Games Last Week

South Carolina 38 Georgia 35

It was a wild one at Williams-Brice Stadium as the Gamecocks took down the Bulldogs. Moving forward, this sets up a very interesting SEC East race early in the season. Mark Richt had this team rolling but in typical fashion, he couldn’t keep it going. I still maintain that the SEC East is highly overrated and doesn’t pose much of a threat to the eventual SEC West Champion. But we’ll see.

Oklahoma 34 Tennessee 10

The Sooners are a very good football team. Granted, the Volunteers aren’t exactly blazing the trail with W’s but OU has great potential. Bob Stoops has built them into a championship caliber team yet again (he’s been doing this since 2000 and earlier). And with a weak Big 12, it sets up a HUGE matchup between Oklahoma and Baylor on November 7th in Norman. Gotta tune in for that one.

UCLA 20 Texas 17

Charlie Strong’s career in Austin hasn’t exactly gotten off to a great start. The Longhorns are 1-2 and don’t have an optimistic outlook into the 2014 season. Spoiling Oklahoma’s season on October 10 is something to look for. The Bruins on the other hand are grossly overrated and I wouldn’t be surprised if they end up having 3 losses by the end of the season. Brett Hundley has not been the least bit impressive thus far. I don’t think they stand much of a chance in the Pac 12 race.

Ohio State 66 Kent State 0

All of the frustration from last week’s loss to Virginia Tech was taken out on the poor, little, in state foe, Golden Flashes. I don’t know about you, but it felt good to win this week. Barrett tied Kenny G’s TD record for a game with 6 (5 in the first half) while freshman Curtis Samuel ran for 100 yards. The Buckeyes head into a bye week with Cincinnati on the schedule in 2 weeks. It’s time for them to stay focused on the ultimate goal which is the Big Ten Title. That is still a possibility, believe it or not.

Penn State 13 Rutgers 10

Rutgers first game in the Big Ten ended in disappointment as James Franklin’s Nittany Lions held on for the win. With the new NCAA ruling this past week making Penn State eligible for postseason play; it makes for an interesting wrinkle in the Eastern Division race. It has been a joy making fun of Rutgers being in this conference the past few months but I want to give them all credit in the world after watching their crowd and fans cheer on their beloved Scarlet Knights. They were loud and passionate and have a better home atmosphere than Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue, and Minnesota combined. Welcome to the B1G!

Boston College 37 USC 31

Yep, had no clue this was coming. The Eagles pulled off the upset of the week with the win over the heavily favored Trojans. I still think USC is a force to be reckoned with in the Pac 12 (they’re better than UCLA) and could sneak back up into the playoff discussion with a few more wins down the stretch. Keep an eye on the Men of Troy.

Big Games This Week

Auburn at Kansas State

I think most people expect the Tigers to come out of this with a big win, and quite frankly, so do I. But it would be stupid to count out Coach Snyder’s Wildcats at any time during the season. They always seem like a pesky team who revel in ruining opponent’s title hopes. Right now I see Auburn as the SEC champ and playoff team because of Gus Malzahn’s coaching ability and Nick Marshall’s leadership. Tigers win.

Thursday, September 18 at 7:30pm on ESPN

Oklahoma at West Virginia

The Sooners are coming off a big win against Tennessee and are now set to travel to Morgantown to face the Mountaineers. West Virginia kept it close with Alabama up to the end of the game back in week one so they are no slouch. I expect OU to win but don’t be surprised if this one is in West Virginia’s favor headed into halftime.

Saturday, September 20 at 7:30pm on FOX

Clemson at Florida State

This was the ACC showdown of the year last season and it didn’t disappoint. But Clemson is a much different team this season and don’t have the friendly confines of Memorial Stadium to help them out (of course that didn’t seem to help last year either). Florida State had an extra week to prepare for this one so I don’t anticipate any surprises in Tallahassee. Seminoles romp.

Saturday, September 20 at 8pm on ABC

Miami (FL) at Nebraska

This game should give the Big Ten and the Huskers at least a little bit of credibility if they were to come away with a win in this one. Bo Pelini is inching closer and closer to the hot seat so every game is a must win for him here on out. Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah has had a great season so far both running and catching the football while entering himself into the Heisman discussion. It’ll be another sellout crowd in Lincoln and the Huskers should win by a touchdown or two.

Saturday, September 20 at 8pm on ESPN2

Ohio State (Bye)

We all hate bye weeks. Watch a replay of a past big win like the ’97 Rose Bowl or ’02 National Championship Game. Or go watch your local small college team play; they always need the extra support.

Michigan Update

The Wolverines struggled most of the first half against the team with the longest losing streak in the country, the Miami (OH) Redhawks. Even with a less than stellar schedule, Brady Hoke seems to be struggling against everyone so far. He’s going to need a miracle to keep his job. They take on Utah this week at 3:30 on ABC or ESPN 2.

Heisman Watch

Marcus Mariota, Oregon

19/23 passing for 221 yards and 2 touchdowns along with 5 carries for 71 yards and an additional 2 touchdowns in win against Wyoming. His Ducks are rolling and as long as they are he’ll be a favorite to hoist the trophy.

Jameis Winston, Florida State

Bye Week

Todd Gurley, Georgia

20 carries for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns in loss to South Carolina. In this day and age, it’s tough to be a Heisman candidate when your team loses. Gurley played well but this certainly hurts his chances.

Rising Star

Kenny Hill, Texas A&M

Kenny Trill™ has thrown for 1,094 yards, and 11 touchdowns while completing nearly 70 percent of his passes. He’s having a freakish year so far. Kevin Sumlin’s Aggies remind me of the great Hawaii offensive systems where guys like Colt Brennan put up 800 yards of offense every game. But if A&M starts beating good SEC teams, Kenny has to be in the discussion.

Dropping Fast

Brett Hundley, UCLA

The Bruins have limped through every game they’ve played so far. If Hundley was a Heisman caliber quarterback, that wouldn’t have happened.

My Playoff if the Season Ended Today

1. Oregon (beat Wyoming 48-14, play at Washington State this week) The Ducks destroy who they’re supposed to destroy and even teams they shouldn’t (looking at you, Sparty). This is an all-around great football team.

2. Florida State (had bye week, plays Clemson this week) The Noles have to show me something this week against Clemson. OU is right on their tails. They just don’t seem as hungry thus far in 2014.

3. Oklahoma (beat Tennessee 34-10, plays at West Virginia this week) I’m all over the Sooners right now. This is a team to be reckoned with and a big win over WVU this week in primetime will show the rest of the country why.

4. Auburn (had bye week, plays at Kansas State this week) I still think Auburn is the team to beat in the SEC regardless of how bad ESPN wants it to be Alabama. This is another opportunity for them to prove that.

Just Missed the Cut

5. Alabama
6. Baylor
7. Notre Dame
8. Texas A&M
9. LSU
10. Michigan State
18. Ohio State

A to Z- 2014 Buckeyes So Far- Part 1

Picture

By: Ryan Black

Yes that is a picture of The Letter People. If you don’t know them then you grew up in Michigan where they don’t allow awesomeness. I sadly had to google the letters of the alphabet to make sure I had the correct order, I am getting really dumb.

We’re 25% through the season so here are some of my pointless thoughts about the Bucks to feed .01% of your empty stomach during a bye week.

Apple isn’t poisoned: Eli Apple maybe a little green 😉 but he is ready to play. The redshirt freshmen had his ups and downs against VA Tech but his athletic ability and nose for the ball should give all Buckeye fans a tingly feeling down low.

Ball and Brionte are afterthoughts: Hate to write kids off after three games but Ohio State has three running backs and two H backs who will carry the ball. Warren Ball and Brionte Dunn will have to wait another year, at least. With more talent coming in, the light at the end of the tunnel is drifting further away for these talented backs.

Catch the ball Corey: In one of the most frustrating games in a long time against the Hokies, Corey Smith had trouble catching the ball in big situations. I think he’ll be fine. He and Michael Thomas seem to be the best at getting consistently open on the team right now. Don’t give up on the speedster yet; it’s way too soon.

Damn last year’s offensive line was legit: Three draft picks-Two rookie starters (good ones at that) and a second stringer. A case could be made that 2013 was one of the best fat guy units in Ohio State history.

Everybody plays against Kent State: I don’t know if I’ve ever seen so many freshmen on the field during an Ohio State game than I did last Saturday. The great news is hardly any of them played like an 18/19 year old.

Finally some short passes: Almost two weeks later and I’m still not over it. The VA Tech gameplan really got my panties in a bunch with nothing but deep bombs called. At least OSU showed against the mighty Flashes that they do have an effective short passing game but boy oh boy was it a week late.

Golly G. do I miss Gordon Gee: With the dismissal of the band director for some college style fun (and some other issues he was starting to stifle), I’m already over new boy. I also highly doubt President Drake will ever play beer pong with me 🙁 .

Holding damnit!: The Ohio State defensive line has been held by the opponents offensive line 201 times this year with very few penalties called. 201 is the amount of plays that have been run against the Buckeye defense this year so I maybe a little biased but these guys do get grabbed more than Budweisers at a Biker bar.

I am in like with Joey Bosa: Don’t get me wrong, I am in love with my wife but if Joey Bosa asked me to go out on a date to play video games and go to a rave…. I would see where the night takes me.

Just run the ball!: The coaches seem to have a lot of faith in the freshmen Q.B., which is great. I still think there is too much talent in the backfield for J.T. to throw 25-30 times a game. It’s like the football gods are paying us haters back for complaining about Jim Bollman never throwing the ball for a decade.

Kicking is an issue: I was very excited to see that OSU had a fat kicker straight off the submarine from Germany (or Kentucky) in the spring. Since then Sean Nuernberger has lost some weight and struggled with his accuracy. I believe he will be a good one in a year or two but he will be put in some very tough spots in close games this year, which won’t be good. Bring back the fat son.

Lee is the next one: Darron Lee has been studly through three games. He looks like Shazier did at the end of his freshmen season and is well on his way to being the next great linebacker at Ohio State.

Mom I need money:  I bet my life savings ($147 and a Playstation 2) on Braxton to win the Heisman a few weeks ago. Now I’m not saying he’s out of the race just yet but there’s an off chance that I may need some financial help in the near future mommy.

See you next week for part 2; I’ll be binge watching The Letter People since bye weeks are so freaking boring.

B1G Weekly Recap: B1G Struggles Continue for Second Straight Week

After going just 8-5 overall last week, the Big Ten found a way to one-up itself and do even worse this weekend. Not counting the Penn State victory over Rutgers, the conference went just 3-6, with no wins over teams from the Power 5 conferences. Ohio State, That Team Up North, and Nebraska were the only teams to score nonconference victories in week three.

West Virginia 40, Maryland 37

In one of the more entertaining games of the weekend, West Virginia snuck past Maryland on a last-second Josh Lambert field goal as time expired. Clint Trickett had a career day for the Mountaineers, throwing for 511 yards and four touchdowns. C.J. Brown led the way for the Terrapins as he rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown on just 18 carries.

Former Ohio State target Stefon Diggs had five catches for 127 yards and a score as Maryland just couldn’t come all the way back from a 28-6 deficit to get the W. Next up, Maryland visits old ACC rivals Syracuse in the Carrier Dome.

Bowling Green 45, Indiana 42

In another entertaining affair, Indiana took a trip up to Bowling Green to take on the MAC school, and left with its first loss on the season. The Hoosiers would take a 42-39 lead on a Nate Sudfeld quarterback sneak on 4th down with just over two minutes remaining. But Indiana couldn’t hang on to that lead. James Knapke led the Falcons down the field and threw a game-winning touchdown pass to Roger Lewis with just nine seconds left on the clock.

Knapke threw for 395 yards on school records for completions (73) and attempts (46). The Falcons ran 113 (ONE-HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN) plays in their upset win over Indiana. The Hoosiers hit the road again next weekend to play Missouri.

Michigan 34, Miami (OH) 10

The Wolverines pulled away in the second half after a shaky start, including three turnovers, left the score at 17-10 at the break. They finally pulled away in the second half, with touchdowns by Jake Butt and Derrick Green capping the afternoon.

Green has already eclipsed his rushing yardage (332) and touchdown (3) totals from last year, feasting on lesser teams of Appalachian State and Miami (OH), while he only had 25 yards on 13 carries in the loss to Notre Dame. The Wolverines host Utah next Saturday in the Big House.

Iowa State 20, Iowa 17

Another Big Ten team went down on a last-second field goal in this rivalry game in Iowa City. Cole Netten hit the game-winning 42-yard field goal with two seconds left. Kirk Ferentz had actually tried to ice Netten by using his final timeout prior to Netten’s first attempt, which was missed. The Cyclones reset after the timeout, and Netten made Ferentz pay.

The Hawkeyes gained just 275 total yards as they lost to Iowa State for the third time in four years. Iowa will look to get back on the winning track next week when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Panthers.

TCU 30, Minnesota 7

Minnesota went down to Texas to take on the Horned Frogs and left with its tail between its legs. The Golden Gophers were dominated by TCU, trailing 30-0 before Maxx Williams caught a 12-yard consolation touchdown pass from Chris Streveler with 11 minutes left in the game. Minnesota turned the ball over five times in the loss.

TCU will make a return trip to Minnesota next fall as a part of the home-and-home series. The Golden Gophers host San Jose State Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.

Washington 44, Illinois 19

This one was over almost as soon as it started, as Washington jumped out to a 35-5 lead after just 20 minutes of game time. Shaq Thompson matched the Illini’s total of two touchdowns himself for the Huskies. Shaq Thompson plays defense. That’s not a good sign, Illinois.

Thompson picked off Wes Lunt in the first quarter and returned it 36 yards for the score and then scooped up a fumble in the second quarter and took it to the house as Washington cruised to the victory. The loss dropped Illinois to 2-1 on the season and they will host Texas State next week.

Notre Dame 30, Purdue 14

Purdue hung around with Notre Dame for the majority of this one, something Michigan certainly can’t say. The Boilermakers even led late in the second quarter before Everett Golson ran in from 15 yards out to give the Irish the lead for good as they went up 17-14. Golson was the story in this one, throwing for 259 yards and two scores while adding 56 rushing yards and the TD.

Purdue had just 56 rushing yards themselves and added three turnovers in their seventh straight loss to the Fighting Irish. At 1-2, the Boilermakers will look to get back to .500 when Southern Illinois comes to Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday.

Penn State 13, Rutgers 10

Penn State rudely welcomed Rutgers into the Big Ten as they scored a last-minute touchdown to defeat the Scarlet Knights in their first conference game. Bill Belton ran in from five yards out to give the Nittany Lions their only lead of the game. Rutgers led 10-0 at halftime and held on to that lead until the Belton touchdown despite Gary Nova throwing five interceptions.

Christian Hackenberg threw for 300 yards again as he ended with 309 yards and a pick as Penn State jumped to first place in the Big Ten East. Rutgers visits the Naval Academy next week while Penn State hosts Massachusetts.

Nebraska 55, Fresno State 19

Things went a little easier this week for Nebraska than they did a week ago when they needed a miracle Ameer Abdullah touchdown to defeat McNeese State at home. This week, the Cornhuskers traveled to Fresno and put a beatdown on the Bulldogs. Big plays highlighted the victory for Nebraska as Jordan Westerkamp caught a 70-yard TD from Tommy Armstrong Jr., Ameer Abdullah had a 57-yard rushing score, and De’Mornay Pierson-El took a punt back 86 yards to house, all in the first half.

Nebraska improved to 3-0 on the season and will look to go to 4-0 next week when the Hurricanes of Miami come into Lincoln for a highly anticipated showdown.

What were your thoughts on this week’s conference performance? Just glad it can’t get much worse than this? Let us know in the comments if you think the Big Ten can turn it around next weekend.

Ohio State vs Kent State: Quick Recap

The Final: 66-0. No big deal.

Offensive player of the game:  J.T. Barrett. 23-30 312 yards, 6 touchdowns. Are you not entertained?

Defensive player of the game: Don’t make me choose! Everybody played well but I guess I’ll give it to Darron Lee. His future is as bright as Oregon’s helmet. Seemed to always be in the right spot and man is he starting to learn to play fast.

Freshmen of the game: Too many choices again, I’ll go with Curtis Samuel. I can’t remember a game with so many freshmen making impact plays. Raekwon = the truth, my honorable mention.

Goof of the week: Kent State’s Jon Cunningham going “Gary Busey” on the sideline before, during, and after the game. I loved it but his teammates definitely did not.

Biggest complaint: Ezekiel you are clearly a large, so why did you order a medium jersey?

Randy Bobandy gut of the week: Donovan Munger, #52. Keep slamming cheeseburgers into that meat locker;  it’s glorious. Played well too.

The Verdict: Couldn’t have gone any better. It’s tough to take a lot away from this game because Kent State is smelly, but I bet Urban really wishes this game was week 1. Great confidence boosting win, so many daggum freshmen, wow. This game should quiet the “Urban’s recruits haven’t proven anything” crowd, at least for a week. Have mercy does this team have any upper classmen?

Where were these short passes last week? I’ll never get over it, 9/6/14 #neverforget.

Up next: After a few weeks of confusion and identity issues, the Buckeyes go bye.

P.S. Quint Kessenwhateveridon’tcarehowtopronounceit can keep telling me that Va Tech losing is making Ohio State fans feel worse, but I won’t believe it. I was laughing the whole time.

Q&A With an Opponents Blogger: Kent State

This week the Buckeyes will have a noon kickoff against the Kent State Flashes at the Shoe. This week I sit down with the beat writer for the Flashes Allen Moff to discuss the game. Moff who writes for the Record-Courier can also be found on twitter. We were hoping to have Allen on our podcast but unfortunately technical issues plagued us this week but we here at MotSaG are still very appreciative and thankful Allen was able to help us out this week.

MotSaG: Players to watch for Kent State?

Allen Moff: Sophomore quarterback Colin Reardon, senior tight end Casey Pierce, senior wide receiver Chris Humphrey, junior nose tackle Nate Terhune, sophomore star (hybrid LB/S) Elcee Refuge, sophomore free safety Nate Holley, junior strong safety Jordan Italiano, junior punter Anthony Melchiori – he is one of the best in the nation.

MotSaG: What would be the keys for the Golden Flashes to pull off the win?

Allen Moff: The Flashes must force turnovers (minimum three in my mind) and score at least one defensive touchdown, and shorten the game – get into the fourth quarter trailing by two scores or less, then hope to catch some breaks.

MotSaG: How has the team pulled together after the sudden passing of center Jason Bitsko?

Allen Moff: The team was already a pretty tight group before Bitsko’s death, and it’s brought them even closer together. It’s been every bit as difficult to deal with as you would expect – Bitsko was a popular player, and very well respected – but overall they’ve handled the tragedy about as well as possible.

MotSaG: What are you looking for in this game from Kent State?

Allen Moff: Improvement across the board, but especially in the running game. The Flashes are a run-first team that’s averaging 1.9 yards per carry through two games this season. Even if the yards are accumulated when they’re down several scores against Ohio State, experiencing some success on the ground against the Buckeyes would provide a huge and much-needed confidence boost.

MotSaG: Are you worried that the Buckeyes will come out and play angry football after getting upset last Saturday?

Allen Moff: I would certainly expect them to, based on all they heat they’ve taken all week long. Kent State coach Paul Haynes says games like these are decided in the first four or five possessions, and the Buckeyes will without question be fired up and ready to put this game away quickly. The Flashes will have to dodge this rush and deliver a shot of their own early to have a chance to make a game of it.

MotSaG: With Noah Spence returning do you feel that OSU’s defensive line is going to make it an extremely long day for Kent’s offensive line?

Allen Moff: Of all the matchups on paper, this one’s probably the most one-sided. Kent State returns just two starters up front and starts three sophomores, one junior who is a first-year starter and one senior – right tackle Terrell Johnson – who has had some ankle trouble recently. Protecting Reardon is a major concern, especially with the return of Spence.

MotSaG: Virginia Tech showed the blueprint on how to slow down the Buckeye do you feel that Kent State will be able to duplicate that?

Allen Moff: I’m sure Kent State would love to, and I’m sure KSU will look to expose some of those weaknesses Virginia Tech brought into the open, but the Flashes simply don’t have the athletes to play like Virginia Tech.

MotSaG: Are you outraged when the national media says that teams like Ohio State shouldn’t schedule “cupcakes” like Kent State?

Allen Moff: That’s Ohio State’s issue, and personally I think it’s completely overblown. In modern day college football you’re basically considered a failure unless you’re playing for a national championship, so what motivation is there to schedule a bunch of non-conference powerhouses? Then you still have the Big Ten schedule to play – certainly the conference is not at its peak this year, but it’s still no picnic either. In-state programs like Kent State appreciate the opportunity to play in Columbus and they appreciate the money, which they desperately need to fund their respective athletic programs. And the Buckeyes are still willing to take the risk of national ridicule if they would happen to lose just once to a MAC school – they deserve some credit for that in my mind.

MotSaG: What are the goals for Kent State this season?

Allen Moff: Kent State’s only goal is to win the MAC. Funny as it sounds, they’re actually three points away from being on pace in that regard. The Flashes lost their opener to Ohio on a last-second field goal, and would be sitting at 1-0 if they could have pulled it out. Since then both Bowling Green and Toledo have lost their starting quarterbacks for the season, which leaves the MAC as a whole and the East Division in particular basically wide open.

MotSaG: What is your final prediction for the game?

Allen Moff: Ohio State, 45-14. If the Flashes can force a turnover or two early they can hang around for a while, but I don’t believe the Buckeyes will ever feel they’re in any real jeopardy on Saturday.

There are lot of things I am looking for from this game. First being no injuries for either team obviously but I’m looking for an angry hungry Buckeye team that we haven’t seen yet this season. Yes in the podcast I said that I felt the Buckeye are going to win 63-7. I’m going to stick to that because I feel that there is going to be a lot of turnovers that the Buckeyes defense is going to create and hopefully score a few. I feel we will have a Cardale Jones sighting along with a Bri’onte Dunn sighting. You are going to see a fired up team not just because of the loss last week but wanting a day or two off during the bye week (which they should get but need to get that offensive line right). Noah Spence coming back from suspension listed behind Steve Miller on the depth chart but we know that won’t last long and the defensive line of Bosa, Washington, Bennett, and Spence is finally here.

Thanks again to Allen for taking the time out of his busy schedule to help us out here this week at MotSaG and a special thanks goes to Aaron Chimenti the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications for his help getting me in touch with Allen and to my former classmate and current Kent State Career Counselor Ryan McNaughton for his help also.
