Negative Buckeye: Maryland Week Complaints and Issues

by: Ryan Black

The Ohio State Buckeyes showed off their awesome tackle football skills again last weekend with a murder of some team from Washington D.C. and fans get to look forward to another bye week…

Remember in the good ole days when Ohio State would only have one bye week and would be forced to wait almost 3 months until the bowl game at the end of the season? Well this old man does and I miss those times.

Normally I would complain about the anger and stupidity that arose during the game last Saturday but coach Urban Meyer has been making life too pleasant anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I still saw and said some awful words about Maryland players and Ohio State’s secondary but this week I need to complain about something deeper.

This weeks negative view point post will remind the true Ohio State fans how much better the times were before the “ever-so-handsome” Urban Meyer came to Columbus. Old timers always believe that their way is best and I’m no different. Growing up with Ohio State was awesome and kids these days won’t understand how great it truly was in the golden years.

So sit back, grab a liquor drink, and lets reminisce about the better times during the Ohio State baby boomer era (1995-2011)-

Best Glory Day Moments:

Eddie George Heisman in 1995-

The first memory as a fan that comes to mind is watching the Heisman ceremony in 1995, in which Eddie George took home the ugly statue. With an always smooth look and head, number 27 stole the hearts of America with a dominant senior season.

He had the courage to wear his jersey halfway up his body to show his perfectly sculpted abs; unlike that current punk Ezekiel Elliot kid who wears his halfway down his body.

Joe Germaine vs. Stanley Jackson in 1996-

Ohio State certainly had the capability of going undefeated during the regular season in 1996 (like Urban Meyer has selfishly done twice). But John Cooper is a better man; he wanted to give the opposing teams a chance. Joe Germaine was one of the top quarterbacks in the nation and Stanley Jackson was one of the top 10 quarterbacks named Stanley in Columbus. Coach Cooper used this to make games more difficult for the Bucks.

Using a two quarterback system, John Cooper would often stop Germaine from scoring in the red zone by replacing him with the more mobile Jackson. Many times this replacement would make a bonehead decision and keep the games interesting. The Bucks couldn’t finish off Michigan because of this (in my 8 year old mind at least) but still headed to Pasadena. Here’s to you John Cooper, director of chaos.

Ohio State beats Michigan 31-16 in 1998

The 1990’s were a great time for true Buckeye fans. Back then beating Michigan actually meant something and was very difficult. In 2014 beating Michigan is easier than my first college girlfriend (I still don’t forget Stacy) and it makes me sick.

Today’s Ohio State fans probably were disappointed after squeaking passed Michigan by 1 point last season. These brats don’t realize that beating Michigan under John Cooper was the equivalent of me landing Gisele Bündchen for a one night stand. Now a days the Ohio State Buckeyes are constantly taking home a 10 out of 10’s and the luster is gone. Been there done that.

Would you really want to bag a super model every time you tried to? (Don’t answer that)

Ohio State wins it all in 2002-

Yea it happened.

Robert Reynolds chokes a bitch in 2003

Back in my day when Ohio State was losing to a bitter rival they didn’t go down quietly. After a national title in 2002, a still undefeated Ohio State was losing on the road at Wisconsin and things were slipping away. Instead of handling a loss with dignity ,which Urban Meyer stupidly preaches, Robert Reynolds took matters (and throats) into his own hands. This true gangsta started choking out the Badger quarterback Jim Sorgi to teach him a lesson. What that lesson was I don’t know.

I couldn’t sleep the night of the Big Ten Championship loss to Michigan State last year; not because our national championships hope went down the drain, oh no. I was extremely disappointed one of our respectful linebackers did not pile drive, mandible claw or edgecute Connor Cook.

At least we have a former Jim Tressel player on the staff in Anthony Schlegel, who Rock Bottomed a fan to hell last week.

Jim Tressel gives Urban Meyer national title in 2006-2007-

Jim Tressel was getting close to 60 years of age and knew he didn’t have too many years left in the engine to run this great university.  He’d already won a ton of national titles, so he decided to let an up and coming coach from Ohio have his day in the sun in the 2006-2007 national championship game when Ohio State met Florida.

Instead of keeping the game close with dignity, this new hot shot coach (Urban Meyer) came out and depantsed our loves in front of the whole nation. What a freaking jerk.

Jim Tressel falls on the sword for all of us in 2011-

Despite the shenanigans Meyer pulled a few years back, Jim Tressel saw an opportunity to get this now seasoned coach to carry Ohio State flag.  After a health scare, the coach left Florida and joined ESPN for a year in the booth. Coach Tress knew he had to act swiftly.

Being a pro wrestling fan, Jim Tressel knew he wanted to go out on his back with turmoil just like his predecessors:

1. Woody Hayes: Went out swinging and was fired after punching a Clemson player in the neck. That player is still breathing through a machine.

2. Earl Bruce: Was let go after having an above average team for us above average fans for a decade. Brings a tear to my eye.

3. John Cooper: Was canned after his refusal to beat Michigan in the 1990’s. What kind of movie would be good if the bad guys didn’t always win in the end? Man I Loved coach Coop.

The issue in leaving in disgrace was that Tressel never lost any games-ever. And if Jim Tressel ever punched a player, then that young man would be deceased before he hit the ground. How could the coach honor his former brethren and unwritten rule of wrestling if he never loses and doesn’t want to deal with a murder trial?

With a perfect plan of course-Jim decided to make up some scandal about free tattoos for a few of his players and eventually he was “forced” to resign the same year Urban was looking for a head coaching job.  Now don’t laugh, things worked a little differently in my day and free tattoos were a big issue:

Back then if a player got a free tattoo he was a terrorist, see one journalist’s thoughts then and now on player benefits: Jonny Manziel vs Terrelle Pryor

And if a player was overpaid by three dollars he got slapped with a five game suspension: This literally happened and nobody cared.

My how the times have changed and not for the better. I think Posey should have gotten a 307 game suspension, one for every cent he took. Back then kids were forced to follow rules and if they didn’t ESPN would scream for the death penalty of Ohio State.  Now in today’s shameful college football world, players can:

1. be accused of sexual assault

2. steal

3. have bb gun battles in public

with no repercussions at all. No wonder Jim was ready to get out of the business.

Jim Tressel did all that for all of these young jerks who watch Ohio State now and they show no damn respect. What a shame.

Currently, Ohio State is doing things with class and winning at a never before seen rate and I don’t know how kids can live with it. If there is a Buckeye god, then please bring back the losses to Michigan, the choke holds and the scandals. Saturdays are too boring anymore.

B1G Weekly Recap: Michigan State Holds On, Northwestern Upset Caps B1G Weekend

With just one Big Ten team playing a nonconference game this weekend, it meant a nearly full conference slate of games. The Big Ten lost its last undefeated team when Nebraska’s comeback attempt against Michigan State fell short, leaving the conference with seven one-loss teams. Despite a slow start to the season, Northwestern showed that they’re looking to make a little noise in the Big Ten West race after they upset Wisconsin in Evanston.

Ohio State 52, Maryland 24

The Buckeyes jumped on the Terrapins early and never really let them off the mat, pulling out to a 31-10 lead at halftime. J.T. Barrett put in another good performance, going 18-for-23 passing for 267 yards and four touchdowns while running for 71 yards and another score. Ezekiel Elliot added 139 yards on the ground on 24 carries for Ohio State.

Stefon Diggs was the playmaker for Maryland that Ohio State needed to shut down, and they did a pretty good job of doing so. Diggs had seven catches for just 52 yards and a touchdown that came well after the game had already been decided. The Buckeye defense picked off Maryland QBs four times, including one brought by for a touchdown by Raekwon McMillan. Ohio State is off next week before hosting Rutgers and Maryland is also idle before going to Kinnick Stadium to take on Iowa.

Purdue 38, Illinois 27

Austin Appleby started for the first time in his collegiate career to lead Purdue to the first Big Ten victory since 2012. Appleby finished 15-for-20 for 202 yards and a touchdown and he rushed for 76 yards and two scores as well. The Boilermakers rushed for 349 yards as a team, led by Akeem Hunt’s 177 yards.

Wes Lunt did what he could to keep the Illini in the game, throwing for 332 yards and two TDs before leaving the game in the 4th quarter with what turned out to be a broken leg. Lunt will be out 4-6 weeks with the injury and Reilly O’Toole will take his place under center. Purdue will host Michigan State on Saturday while Illinois will make a visit to Wisconsin.

Indiana 49, North Texas 24

In the lone nonconference game of the weekend, Indiana easily dispatched Sun Belt foe North Texas to get back in the win column. Nate Sudfeld threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Hoosiers over the Mean Green.

Tevin Coleman hit the century mark in rushing yards for the seventh straight game, racking up 150 yards and a score. D’Angelo Roberts got 102 rushing yards for himself and two TDs for the Hoosiers. Next up for Indiana is a trip to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes.

Northwestern 20, Wisconsin 14

Once again, Melvin Gordon played an outstanding game and once again, Wisconsin’s quarterbacks played poorly, this time leading to a Badger defeat. Gordon did his part, toting the ball 27 times for 259 yards and a touchdown. Tanner McEvoy started the game but was replaced late in the first half after starting the game 4-for-10 for just 24 yards and an interception. Former starter Joel Stave came in, but didn’t fare much better, going 8-for-19 for 113 yards, one score, and he was picked off three times.

Justin Jackson had 162 rushing yards for the Wildcats, with Trevor Siemian throwing for 182 yards and a TD in the upset that put Northwestern at 2-0 in the Big Ten West. Wisconsin will look to even their conference record next week when they welcome Illinois to Camp Randall and Northwestern will try to continue their winning ways when they take a trip to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers.

Rutgers 26, Michigan 24

Rutgers got their first Big Ten victory, sending Brady Hoke one game closer to the unemployment line in the process. Gary Nova was the star of the show, throwing for 404 yards and three touchdowns on the Wolverine defense. The loss dropped the Wolverines to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Big Ten, something they haven’t done since 1967 when they started 0-3 in conference play.

Devin Gardner threw for 178 yards with an interception and ran for 40 and two touchdowns. Derrick Green added 74 yards on the ground but is now out for the season with a broken clavicle. Rutgers has a bye week to prepare for Ohio State and the Wolverines will host Penn State next weekend in Ann Arbor.

Michigan State 27, Nebraska 22

Michigan State looked well on its way to another blowout victory at home as it pulled away from the Cornhuskers to lead 27-3 after three quarters. Nebraska made things interesting with 19 straight points in the 4th quarter, and they even had a chance to get the win before Trae Waynes picked off Tommy Armstrong Jr. with less than minute to go with the Huskers driving in Spartan territory.

Ameer Abdullah had just 45 yards on 24 carries as the Spartan defense held Nebraska to just 47 yards rushing as a team. Jeremy Langford had 111 yards on the ground as Michigan State won their conference opener and improved to 4-1 overall on the season. Michigan State will travel to West Lafayette to take on Purdue on Saturday and Nebraska will be idle before taking a trip to Evanston to play Northwestern.

What did you think of this weekend’s set of games? Were you rooting for Nebraska to pull off the comeback to cap a crazy Saturday of college football? Let us know your favorite moment of the weekend in the comments below.

Instant Analysis: Ohio State stomps Maryland 52-24

There is nothing better than clearly hearing “O-H-I-O” loud and proud in an opponent’s stadium. It’s good for Maryland to learn early in their inaugural Big Ten season that Buckeye fans are the best traveling fans in the conference. They may have sold out Byrd stadium but there is always a sea of scarlet and gray.

The Buckeyes came out of their first conference game of the season with a very nice victory, beating the Terps 52-24.

OFFENSE

You can tell J.T. Barrett is gaining more confidence when he’s running the ball; he may not be as flashy as Braxton Miller, but he’s fast and efficient so I’m not mad about it. There were a few times he was surprised by Maryland’s defense from the back, but he just needs to stay aware in the pocket.

Urban Meyer is definitely training Ezekiel Elliott to be the next Carlos Hyde, and he’s getting more powerful by the day. The running game was a big part of the play calling and spreading it out between Elliott and Rod Smith opened up a lot of offensive options.

The Buckeye pass game is so well-rounded and Barrett is making much better decisions in the pocket. 1) We finally saw Jalin Marshall score off a short pass into the endzone; 2) Tight ends Heuerman and Vannett both had great catches; 3) Devin Smith had an incredible catch in the endzone after a quick series in the third.

Side note: when Cardale Jones came in during the fourth quarter, he proved that he could also have a future jumping hurdles.

DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS

My favorite part of the first half may have been the comparison of Joey Bosa to Houston Texans J.J. Watt; if Bosa can keep playing with the same energy, he’ll be a beast for years to come.

All week long, Maryland’s Stefon Diggs was a player to watch out for, and the Buckeye special teams absolutely crushed him on his first return attempt of the game. They stayed tight on Diggs and really took away the power he had coming into the game.

The secondary got a few breaks when Maryland’s quarterback’s inefficiency made up for the defensive backs getting beaten down field throughout the game. The Terps had a huge completion off Doran Grant’s helmet in the third quarter which was QUICKLY rebuffed by Eli Apple with an interception in the endzone. There is still work that needs done, but they were able to create a lot of turnovers which was at least one bright spot.

Catching Up With Austin Mack

Austin Mack is a top Wide Receiver coming out of the 2016 class. He is from Fort Wayne, Indiana and stands 6-2 weighing 205. 247 Sports has Austin as the top player coming out of Indiana in his class. He is also ranked the 20th Receiver for the class. He has offers from several top programs such as Ohio State, Notre Dame and Michigan State.

When asked about the recruiting process Mack said “It’s been real good and successful.”. It is important to know that as of know he does not have a list of his top schools. “I’m keeping everything even” he explained.

Austin was able to visit Ohio State for the Cincinnati game. “It was a different night game there is pretty crazy. The whole atmosphere was nuts. And with better competition it was much more fun to watch.”. He along with several other recruits were able to share this experience. When asked about the other recruits visiting Mack stated “I talked to Gibson and that’s about it.” The two of them together on a team could be a very deadly combination.

He plans on committing  next summer at the RAS camp. He is keeping busy with visits as he will visit Notre Dame for the Stanford game. To close up my conversation with Austin he said “I’ll be playing in Columbus on 10/10 against Bishop Hartley so come out and show some love!”. With die hard Buckeye fans I am sure Mack will be satisfied with the love he will get from Buckeye Nation!

A Look Around The Country

Same mediocre play, different week. I’m pretty sure almost every week I write this the top teams in the country are either not playing or struggling against inferior opponents. It happened again this week. Florida State squeaked by NC State while giving up 40+ points. The Seminoles are going to lose eventually; I guarantee it (in my best Men’s Warehouse voice). Oregon, Oklahoma, and Alabama were all idle this week before huge tests against Arizona, TCU, and Ole Miss respectively. Don’t be surprised if one of them goes down in an upset. As you’ll see from the “Big Games this week” section, there are plenty of great games this weekend. Many of which will be season-defining for the teams involved. After this weekend, we will have a much clearer Playoff picture headed into the month of October. So buckle up.

Notable Games Last Week

UCLA 62 Arizona State 27

I’ll be honest; I underestimated Bret Hundley and the Bruins as I predicted them to lose this one. But it’s safe to say now that UCLA is a clear contender in the PAC 12 race and pose a real threat to Oregon (they play in Pasadena on October 11). Hundley looked like a Heisman contender most of the game and if he continues to play like that, UCLA could be looking at a Playoff berth in December.

Missouri 21 South Carolina 20

A week after losing to Big Ten powerhouse, Indiana, the Tigers of Mizzou were able to dispatch South Carolina at Williams-Brice. I can’t make sense of the SEC East right now. They have no clear favorite right now except maybe for Georgia. To me it doesn’t really matter who wins the East because they will get destroyed in the SEC title game by the eventual West Champ. It’s back to the drawing board yet again for Steve Spurrier.

Ohio State 50 Cincinnati 28

What started with the Bearcats scoring on a long touchdown pass early in the game led to an Ohio State romp. Then Cincinnati came back, and then the Buckeyes pulled away again. In the middle of all that was an Ohio State student (and Evan’s Scholar) running onto the field only to get planted into the ground by former Buckeye LB Anthony Schlegel. It was an odd night. The Buckeyes still need to work on their pass defense but the offense behind J.T. Barrett and Zeke Elliot is starting to come together. If they can fix the secondary, it will be fun to watch them make a playoff push.

Big Games This Week

Ohio State at Maryland

The Buckeyes kickoff Big Ten play against the newcomer Maryland Terrapins. It will be fun to watch Ohio State fans take over College Park just like they do to every other stadium in the conference and country every week. Let’s give them a warm welcome to the Big Ten. The offense should excel most of the day, with the only real concern being on the defensive side of the ball. The secondary will have to handle WR Stefon Diggs who was once a Buckeye prospect. If they can do that, they should win big.

Saturday, October 4 at 12:00pm on ABC

Alabama at Ole Miss

Oxford, Mississippi will be rocking as the Crimson Tide roll into town on Saturday. Bama has been struggling against most of its opponents this year mostly because of the inexperience at quarterback. But the Rebels are coming off of a lackluster win over Memphis making it pretty clear that they were looking ahead to this one. I highly suggest you tune in to watch this one. Ole Miss keeps it close but the Tide pull away in the fourth quarter

Saturday, October 4 at 3:30pm on CBS

Stanford at Notre Dame

The Irish have been extremely underrated so far this season and I think as the season goes on we will start to see why they were in the title game in 2012. They’re the least talked about top 10 team by far this season. Everett Golston has been playing lights out so far and I expect that to continue against a good Stanford defense. Brian Kelly is the man in South Bend but look for a repeat of the 2012 game; it will go down to the wire. Notre Dame comes away with the W.

Saturday, October 4 at 3:30pm on NBC

Nebraska at Michigan State

Who would have thought that this game would be such a huge matchup in primetime. Not me. In what could be a Big Ten championship preview, Pelini’s Huskers march into East Lansing to take on the favored Spartans. Ameer Abdullah has been playing like a Heisman contender so far this year so the MSU Defense will be put to the challenge. But Nebraska hasn’t seen an offense as good as the Spartans all season. Guys like Connor Cook and Jeremy Langford are a handful for any defense. It’ll be a great four quarters of football, but Sparty comes away with a 3 point victory.

Saturday, October 4 at 8pm on ABC

I also suggest tuning into Arizona-Oregon, Utah-UCLA, Arizona State-USC, Texas A&M-Mississippi State, Oklahoma-TCU, Baylor-Texas, and LSU-Auburn. So go buy a case of beer, fill up your cooler, and sit your butt on the couch all day. It’s a Fall Saturday, so it’s socially acceptable.

Michigan Update

It’s going to get worse in Ann Arbor before it gets better. This has been an absolute train wreck of a season for the Wolverines and I have Brady Hoke on Fire watch any day now. His mishandling of QB Shane Morris’s concussion symptoms is just another incident in a long line of mishaps he’s had at Michigan. They lost to Minnesota this week 30-14 and their schedule doesn’t seem to get any easier (for them at least). They play Rutgers, Penn State, and Michigan State over the next three games. They will lose at least 2 of those, maybe all 3. So long, Brady.
My Playoff if the Season Ended Today

1. Oregon (was idle this week, plays Arizona this week) The Ducks will have plenty of rest heading into their game with the Wildcats. Mariota is good, I mean really good. I don’t anticipate any problems with this one. They are still my Number One.

2. Oklahoma (was idle this week, plays TCU this week) For me, the Sooners are the only equal opponent with Oregon right now. There is a huge drop off to number 3. They take on the Horned Frogs this week and I expect them to roll. The Red River Rivalry is next week. Boomer Sooner.

3. Alabama (was idle this week, plays Ole Miss this week) I bumped up the Tide this week mostly because they have been a little more consistent than Florida State. I still can’t imagine them going undefeated though. As a side note to that: I highly doubt any SEC team goes undefeated. The West is brutal.

4. Florida State (beat NC State 56-41, plays Wake Forest this week) I cannot wrap my head around their struggles so far. It sort of made sense last week since Winston was out. But they have a great defense; there is no reason why they should be giving up 41 to the Wolfpack. Have to believe they get beat eventually as well. As far as I know, the eventual national champion is sitting outside of the top 10.

Just Missed the Cut

5. Baylor
6. Auburn
7. Notre Dame
8. Texas A&M
9. Michigan State
10. Ole Miss
17. Ohio State

B1G Weekly Recap: Blowouts Highlight Weekend Action For Big Ten

With Big Ten play mostly in full swing with five conference games in play over the weekend, the conference also went undefeated in the four nonconference games it had. It was not a particularly entertaining slate of games, with every game ending in at least a 14-point margin of victory. Iowa’s 24-10 victory over Purdue was the closest game of the week.

Wisconsin 27, South Florida 10

It took awhile for the Badgers to get going in this one, as they were held to three points and were tied going into halftime. Melvin Gordon turned it on after the break, rushing for 131 of his 181 yards and both touchdowns after halftime.

Tanner McEvoy was efficient in Wisconsin’s victory, throwing for 160 yards on 11-18 passing and one touchdown. The Badgers open Big Ten play next week with a trip to Evanston to take on Northwestern.

Rutgers 31, Tulane 6

Gary Nova had a record-setting day for the Scarlet Knights, as he threw for 291 yards and four touchdowns. The four touchdowns on the day pushed Nova to 61 on his career, making him Rutgers’ all-time leader in touchdown passes.

Desmon Peoples and Justin Goodwin split the workload for rushing after Paul James’ season-ending injury last week as Peoples ran for 83 yards and Goodwin added 82. Rutgers hosts the dumpster fire that is Michigan football right now next week in Piscataway.

Iowa 24, Purdue 10

Darrell Hazell’s first Big Ten win will have to be put on hold for at least another week after the Boilermakers lost to Iowa made Hazell 0-9 in conference play. Purdue actually jumped out to a 10-0 lead before the Hawkeyes were led back by two rushing scores by Mark Weisman and a touchdown pass from C.J. Beathard to Kevonte Martin-Manley.

The Boilermakers have some serious offensive issues to address if they are going to get that elusive Big Ten victory. Purdue managed just 156 total yards on offense (72 passing, 84 rushing) in the loss. Purdue visits Illinois next week while Iowa is idle before taking on Indiana in two weeks.

Michigan State 56, Wyoming 14

The defending Big Ten champions made quick work of the Cowboys in their final game before starting conference play. Michigan State jumped out to a 42-14 lead at halftime as the cruised to the victory. Jeremy Langford ran for 137 yards and a touchdown and Connor Cook added 126 yards through the air as the starters sat for most of the second half.

Tony Lippett had 76 yards receiving and a score as the Spartans put up back-to-back games with more than 50 points for the first time since 1978. Michigan State welcomes unbeaten Nebraska into Spartan Stadium in primetime next weekend.

Northwestern 29, Penn State 6

Trevor Siemian, as well as the Northwestern defense, were the stars of this game as Northwestern opened Big Ten play with a win while Penn State dropped to 1-1 in conference play. Siemian threw for 258 yards and ran for three touchdowns as Northwestern led from start to finish.

Anthony Walker’s 49-yard interception return for a touchdown was the highlight of the day for Northwestern’s defense, which held the Nittany Lions to just 50 yards rushing and only allowed the two field goals. The Wildcats host Wisconsin on Saturday and Penn State will have next week off as they prepare for a trip to Ann Arbor to take on the Wolverines in two weeks time.

Maryland 37, Indiana 15

A week after knocking off Missouri on the road, Indiana got blown out at home by conference newcomers Maryland. The Terrapins lost starting quarterback C.J. Brown for the second half, but it didn’t matter, with backup Caleb Rowe throwing for two scores. The Buckeyes will have to keep an eye on Stefon Diggs on Saturday after Diggs again posted big numbers, pulling in 6 catches for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Tevin Coleman was the lone bright spot on offense for the Hoosiers and he ended up with 122 rushing yards and a score. Maryland hosts its first Big Ten conference game next week when Ohio State visits, and Indiana looks to get back to the winning ways when they welcome North Texas to Bloomington.

Minnesota 30, Michigan 14

The Wolverines made history on Saturday, but not the kind they were hoping for. For the first time in their football history, the Wolverines have lost three games before the month of October. Minnesota dominated this game as David Cobb led the way with 183 yards on the ground for the Golden Gophers. Minnesota won the Little Brown Jug for just the second time in 24 years.

The main thing that will be remembered from this matchup is Brady Hoke’s mishandling of Shane Morris in the second half after this game was as good as over. Morris was already hobbling due to a lower leg injury when he took a nasty hit that left him dazed and barely able to stand on his own. Hoke left Morris in the game after the play, and even allowed him to re-enter the game after Devin Gardner’s helmet came off during a play. Minnesota has the week off, while the Wolverines head east to play Rutgers.

Nebraska 45, Illinois 14

Once again, Ameer Abdullah stole the show as the Cornhuskers easily dismantled the Illini defense in the rout. Abdullah had 196 yards by halftime and finished with 208 on the day as he continues his quest for the Heisman Trophy. Imani Cross added 109 yards on the ground as Nebraska rushed for 458 yards as a team.

Illinois was missing starting quarterback Wes Lunt due to a leg injury suffered last week and went with Reilly O’Toole in his place. O’Toole finished with 261 yards and a score on just 17-38 passing while being intercepted three times. Illinois hosts Purdue on Saturday in Champaign and Nebraska takes a visit to East Lansing to take on Michigan State in the B1G game of the week.

Michigan AD Admits No One Watches Their Football Games

Did you think this media storm and public outcry was just going to go away for Michigan? Dave Brandon apparently hopes it will with his statement that was released at cover your butt AM, not sure if that’s still central time or what. I would put the whole statement on here but really you can click the link to read it, besides wouldn’t it be more fun to dissect some of it together. Let’s show that either a cover up has been going on or,here’s my favorite, no one in Ann arbor really knows what the heck is going on. With the whole Brandon release we might as well and splice in some of Brady Hokes press conference too right.

Before we begin I just want to point out that in no way am I calling anyone a liar, I truly don’t believe that there is a cover up going on either. I do however believe that there is complete and utter incompetence coming out of the athletic department, the coaching staff, and medical staff but that is my own opinion.

During the Monday afternoon Brady Hoke press conference, where he was questioned like a billion times about the upcoming Rutgers game, I mean the “consussiongate”.

“The one thing I can tell you is during the process of… let me share this first. Number one, we practiced yesterday. We practiced last night and Shane Morris would have practiced were it not for a high ankle sprain, and that’s one reason I’m telling you that is because that’s what I’ve been told and a high ankle sprain, they have a new word for it that I can’t really pronounce but he would have practiced if it wasn’t for that.

I don’t know coach but either someone is throwing you under the bus or your previous concussions have made you forget that that new medical term is called a Concussion.

From Dave Brandon:

Following the game, a comprehensive concussion evaluation was completed and Shane has been evaluated twice since the game. As of Sunday, Shane was diagnosed with a probable, mild concussion, and a high ankle sprain. That probable concussion diagnosis was not at all clear on the field on Saturday or in the examination that was conducted post-game. Unfortunately, there was inadequate communication between our physicians and medical staff and Coach Hoke was not provided the updated diagnosis before making a public statement on Monday. This is another mistake that cannot occur again.

Here’s my thing on these two statements. Sunday the medical staff had informed Hoke that yes Shane Morris has indeed suffered a high ankle sprain, but from the time of that conversation to the wee early morning hours of Tuesday NO ONE has informed him that the kid suffered a ” probable” concussion? Are you kidding me what kind of outfit are you running up there? You are suppose to be the University of Michigan on the forefront of concussion research and prevention.

You mean to tell me you got it right in 2008 when you took Denard Robinson’s helmet and wouldn’t let him play, Tate Forcier had to play in the third quarter and onto multiple overtimes? You mean to tell me that being on the forefront, having helped so many programs across the country set up guidelines and protocols about concussions, that after the Concussion-Gate that the Cleveland Browns went through certain things never crossed anyone’s minds in Ann Arbor?

More from Brandon:

Going forward, we have identified two changes in our procedures that we will implement immediately:

We will have an athletic medicine professional in the press box or video booth to ensure that someone will have a bird’s eye view of the on-field action, have television replay available and have the ability to communicate with medical personnel on the sidelines.

We are also examining how to reinforce our sideline communication processes and how decisions will be made in order to make sure that information regarding student-athlete availability to participate is communicated effectively amongst the medical team and to our coaches

So why wasn’t this done across the NCAA after the Browns incident in the first place? The NFL changing their concussion protocols? Remember you are U of M and are on the forefront of these things.

More from Brandon:

In the fourth quarter, Shane took a significant hit and stumbled after getting up. From the field level and without the benefit of replays, medical and coaching staffs did not see the hit. Because they did not see the hit, the athletic training staff believed Shane stumbled because of his ankle injury. The team neurologist, watching from further down the field, also did not see the hit. However, the neurologist, with expertise in detecting signs of concussion, saw Shane stumble and determined he needed to head down the sideline to evaluate Shane.

Not to make light of the situation here but your telling me that NO ONE on that sideline had seen that hit or that young man stumble and being held up? Yeah why would you I would be watching on my phone the big ten network to see a real team move the football up and down the field too. I guess that even everyone on the sideline wasn’t into the game and you trying to sell this to your fan base?

Hoke fails to Deliver on Promise of Player Safety

Something appalling , disturbing and reprehensible happened Saturday at the Big House in Ann Arbor. No I am not talking about the loss the Wolverines suffered to the Minnesota Gophers. You have to give Jerry Kill and staff credit for having their game plan together and the Gopher players executed it, basically handing Michigan a old fashion butt whooping. The situation I am talking about is with Brady Hoke and Shane Morris.

“We’re not going to talk about injuries and I might as well bring that out now. And some of that is because you can say something about something and then you’re wrong. Everybody heals a little differently, and the other thing is for our kids. I want to make sure we’re doing a good job protecting them.”

That quote was from Brady Hoke at his press conference on 9/17/14 via mgoblog.com.

Saturday night versus Minnesota Shane Morris was taking a beating and on one play it appeared he hurt his left leg pretty bad after getting up from avoiding a safety, as the game wore on he continued to get hit and fall awkwardly on that bad leg. You could see Brady on the sideline watching Morris the entire time trying to encourage him. During this stretch something should have clicked in Hoke’s mind that we need to pull this kid before something really serious happens to him right. Nope later in the game Morris takes a shot that was flagged for unnecessary roughness on the passer and when Shane got to his feet and took a few steps he almost fell down and looked woozy. One of his offensive linemen caught him helping prop himself up then Morris decided to kind of shake it off and say no I’m good I’m staying in.

Here is the video of about six minutes of what was going on:

Here is where the very appalling, very disturbing, and very reprehensible actions took place from head coach Brady Hoke and the University of Michigan medical staff. Michigan has touted that they are on the forefront of concussion research and prevention. They have even helped coaches and athletes across the country identify and educate them on concussion symptoms and awareness. When Shane Morris was finally pulled and Devin Gardner was inserted into the game you could see the medical staff start to “work and talk” with Morris on the sideline. Couple of plays into Gardner’s possession after taking over for the injured Morris, Gardner’s helmet came off meaning he had to sit out a play or Michigan burn a time-out.

Michigan easily could have inserted the third string QB for one play just to hand the ball off for a running play or clearly used a time-out. Nope that’s not what happened. Morris went back into the game for that one play. No he didn’t get hurt again on that play but Hoke and the medical staff clearly dropped the ball and should have never let him back into the game period.

Brady, curious as to the decision to leave Shane in after he got hit. Might’ve had a concussion…

“Well, you know, I don’t know. I don’t know if he might’ve had a concussion or not. I don’t know that and that wasn’t something- Shane’s a pretty competitive, tough kid and Shane wanted to be the quarterback and so believe me, if he didn’t want to be he would’ve come to the sideline or stayed down.”

Was it your decision then to leave him in after the late hit foul?

“The late hit foul…yes.”

Brady, just to be clear on when Shane Morris got the hit to the head, did you see him kind of wobbling and fall?

“I did not.”

Okay, because it looked like he was out on his feet. Nobody saw that on the sideline?

“I didn’t see it. I can only answer for me.”

These quotes are from mgoblog.com post game press conference.

How did Hoke not see Morris after that hit stumble and being helped stay on his feet by his offensive lineman? How was Hoke not paying attention to what was going on?
When Morris came to the sideline and the medical staff was evaluating him how do they not go to the coach and say he can’t play we are still evaluating him even if the kid didn’t have a concussion?

Hoke has clearly shown he seems to have no clue as to what he is witnessing right in front of him or he is in denial. This is definitely a case were wearing headphones on the sidelines communicating with other coaches upstairs would have helped.

Today I am not here to bash the Michigan program or make fun of them but what Brady Hoke and the medical staff did Saturday night was beyond the scope of looking out for a players safety and something needs to be done to Hoke. Yes if this were to happen at Ohio State I would be calling out Urban Meyer, Hoke failed his players. Have to wonder if recruits are rethinking their commitment to Michigan when it looks like the head coach doesn’t seem to be looking out for them.
