MotSag Chat with Brandon Wimbush

4star_recruit_iconI recently got to chat with 2015 QuarterBack Brandon Wimbush who is quickly becoming a familiar name to Urban Meyer and Tom Herman. Herman really likes this prospect and an offer soon would not be out of the question. Brandon at 6″2 210 lbs feels like he is a quarterback who can move if he has too and not an athlete playing quarterback. This is exactly the answer Herman would love to hear. Reviews coming from Friday Nights were Brandon performed great an was arguably the best quarterback there.

945352

247sports ranks him as the #9 dual threat quarterback.

Q: How do you feel you performed at Friday Night Lights?

A:I feel as if i performed to the best of my ability. I was able to attract the eye of Coach Herman, the quarterback coach, which i was very proud of.

Q: Did you get a chance to work with any former Buckeyes?

A:Yessir, a former quarterback that i forget the name of.

Q: Did you get a chance to speak with any of the coaches?

A:I was given the opportunity to sit and eat with both Coach Herman and Coach Meyer.

Q: What did the coaches feel you need to work on the most?

A:I needed to stop aiming the football. Coach Herman warned me that that would occur with the fact that i have no chemistry with any of the wide recievers.

Q: How do you feel about your chance of potentially earning an offer?

A: It would be a dream come true if was to receive an offer. They would be in my top 3 as soon as it happened.

Q: Describe the atmosphere at Friday Night Lights, is it what you expected?

A: I can honestly say that it was better than i expected. I wasnt aware that there were going to be fans there watching future buckeyes and what not. It was great to get a little tatse of Buckeye pride

Q: What was your favorite part of the camp?

A: I would have to say the intense strength and conditioning sessions we had before the actual field work. Sitting with Coach Meyer and Coach Herman was not too far from that.

Q: What about your game do you think sets you apart from everyone else?

A:My ability to throw the ball with accuracy and velocity and then be able to run when necessary.

Q: When you think of Ohio State what come to your mind?

A: A historic football program and a great school academically

Q: If you could let Buckeye nation know one thing what would it be?

A:im ALL about business when I step on the field and a leader on and off the field.

Braxton Miller cleared in Autograph Scandal

OSU Football

OSU Football

As anyone who follows sports will know Johnny Manziel is the target of an NCAA investigation for several autograph signing sessions where he was allegedly paid large amounts of money in return for signing 100s of items. You can read all about those claims by reading Joe Schad’s report on ESPN.

Today some of those same brokers had items by lots of CFB players including Jadaveon Clowney and Braxton Miller. As was first reported in this article on Busted Coverage.

After a brief investigation by myself you can find items by nearly every player on every team in CFB on Ebay. No one is exempt from it and 99% of those players on there will never be accused of doing anything illegal. Johnny Manziel has a real issue facing him as there are multiple dealers saying they paid him to sign stuff. Those dealers though will only tell their story to ESPN and wont tell it to the NCAA so most likely nothing will ever come of it.

What we are seeing though is this… Players and schools are coming out and saying their players did nothing wrong.

Such as this…

Of course now Ohio State has also released their own investigation report on the issue. Gene Smith had this to say to Cleveland.com…

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith told Cleveland.com today that Ohio State received a call on Sunday night that Miller was the college athlete with the second-most memorabilia on a website where Manziel had the most items for sale. Manziel is reportedly being investigated by the NCAA for selling his autographs for money.

“We were told our guy was number two,” Smith said. “So we started checking on that. We went through all that stuff, and there’s no connection.”

Smith said the compliance department met with Miller sometime on Monday or Tuesday, and it was determined that most of the Miller merchandise for sale was signed during an hour-long autograph session held in Chicago in late July as part of Big Ten media days. The Buckeyes and Michigan had the longest lines there.

Which led to this discussion today with B1G commish Jim Delaney who was in town today to watch OSU practice and talk to OSU staff…

With Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany in Columbus today as part of his tour of the conference, Smith said he brought up that issue, and questioned whether such a large autograph signing was the best idea in the future, in light of the recent and past autograph sales that aroused NCAA concerns.

“A lot of that is from there, and we’re doing it to ourselves,” Smith said.

Ohio State, for example, has greatly curtailed the autographs signed by its athletes and instead gives photo cards to its high-profile players, like Miller, to pass out. Less than three years removed from memorabilia violations that brought sanctions down on the football team, Smith said the athletic department chases any potential issues when they arise, and in this case, Ohio State is confident that Miller did nothing wrong.

“We’ve been on it,” Smith said. “There’s nothing there. There’s nothing there.”

Which leads itself to a lot of discussion about whether schools and conferences should be holding signing sessions for fans that are filled with autograph dealers that will lead to profits made off those signatures and questions of the integrity of the players doing the signing.

The Best of the B1G, #8 Carlos Hyde

b1g_icon[Editor’s Note: This list was created back in May, long before any of Mr. Hyde’s troubles occured. We decided to keep him in the list and update this post accordingly.]

Carlos Hyde comes into 2013 as a senior on your beloved Buckeyes. He has become a punishing running back and a force to be reckoned with in the backfield. He comes off the 2012 seson just 30 yards shy of reaching the benchmark level of 1,000. He’s hoping that this season he becomes the first running back under Meyer’s instruction to reach said level. The closest player to reach 1000 yards under Meyer was Brandon Warfield in 2003 when Meyer was coaching at Utah.

In 2012, he led the Big Ten conference in scoring and touchdown scoring and was named All-Big Ten second team. He also received honors from Ohio State by receiving the Rex Kern award for outstanding offensive player from his efforts in the Michigan, Illinois, and Nebraska games.

He brings a tremendous level of maturity to the offense side of the ball as well an outstanding level of leadership, which should help bring Dunn and Ball up to speed.

I don’t know about you, but I’ll be setting up a dry erase board with the number “1000” in big digits and will be counting down every game. Hopefully, we’ll see it accomplished by game 10.

Update: A little while back, Carlos Hyde seemed to get himself in a little bit of trouble at a night club. Many rumors swirled around as to whether or not he did what he was accused of doing until the CPD released the video from the night club. After the dust settled, Mr. Hyde was cleared of assault charges after the video showed him not striking the woman. But Coach Meyer had different plans for him. The coach has benched him for three games “for conduct not representative of this football program or this university,” Meyer said in a statement released by the school.

MotSaG Chat with Chris Warren

BPz2ed-CIAIhHmfTom Herman the offensive coordinator might as well buy a house in Texas because the guy is living down there most of the year recruiting star HS players. The newest target for him is a RB from Rockwall, Texas whose father was an NFL star for many years with the Seattle Seahawks. Chris Warren III is a 6’2″ 220 lbs 4 star RB/Athlete. 247sports ranks him a high 4 star and the 5th best ATH in the country and 57th best overall. ESPN ranks him a 4 star and the 122nd best recruit in the country. Chris is a big and powerful RB the kind of guy that normally wouldn’t fit in a spread type offense but he also has a lot of speed and elusiveness to him that fits perfectly. Coach Meyer has recently expressed that his offense will always be transforming and more Pro-Style will be coming. Chris Warren seems like the ideal guy to have to run both styles at the same time. His Sophomore stats are impressive he had 174 rushed for 1059 yards and 13 TDs along with 10 catches and 100 yards and 2 more TDs. He has 2 more years of HS left to continue to make a name for himself and enjoy the process. I want to thank him for doing this interview with us and I hoe you enjoy it…

SYR- If you could please tell us about your home life… Parents, brothers and/or sisters, where you were born, Have you always lived in in the same place?

Chris- I was born in Seattle then moved to Texas

SYR- Can you give us your current stats such as height, weight, 40 yard time, bench press, etc?

Chris- h:6’2 w:225lbs 40: 4.4 bench:250 5 times

SYR- Tell us a little bit about your HS FB team such as record and defensive style.

Chris- our record last year was 3-7 and we run a 3-3-5

SYR- What are your goals for the upcoming season?

Chris- 1200+yards, 20tds, playoffs, state

SYR- What college football team did you grow up being a fan of and why?

Chris- Texas, it’s all I knew growing up

SYR- You have offers from all over the country which one was the most exciting for you to get and why?

Chris- probably Alabama because of the recent success and attention

SYR- Who would you say is your personal hero and why?

Chris- I don’t have one

SYR- If you were going to die tomorrow what would your final meal be?

Chris- garlic steak at Vilas grill by my house

SYR- Who do you think you compare to most in the NFL or College right now?

Chris- I honestly don’t know but I’ve heard Adrian Peterson a lot so we will go with that

End of an Era

The first preseason poll just came out and while it doesn’t mean anything I am going to use it today. The Bowl Championship Series is in its final year this football season. Lets take a look back on the end of an era shall we.

Eight teams have played in five or more BCS bowl games, four of those teams have winning records. Ohio State, Florida, USC, Oklahoma, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Michigan and Alabama are the said teams. Ohio State is the only team to play in nine games while Oklahoma played in eight Florida and Florida State each went to seven Virginia Tech competed in six and Alabama and Michigan were in five. Only two of those teams Ohio State and USC have six wins Florida comes in with five and Alabama has three victories. Looking back that’s impressive seeing that USC had one coach (Pete Carroll) go 6-1, Ohio State had two coaches (Cooper and Tressel) go 6-3 (Cooper 1-0), Florida also had two coaches (Spurrier and Meyer) finish 5-2 (Meyer 3-0), and Alabama also had two coaches (Mike Dubose and Nick Saban) to go 3-2 (DuBose 0-1). Carroll is the only coach will 6 wins himself but Urban Meyer holds the distinction of being undefeated in BCS games going 4-0 with Utah and Florida. Nick Saban is a combined 5-1 with his Alabama and former LSU teams. Saban and Meyer are the only two coaches on this list still active and could possibly add to their record in this final year.

Next season there will be a playoff system that will go into place. The two semi championship games will pit #1 seed vs #4 seed and the #2 seed vs #3 seed. The games will be alternated between bowls and will either be played on Dec. 31st or Jan 1st with the final game the on the first Monday after the semi championship games are played. The National Championship will not be a bowl game. There will be a committee will have to whittle down to get the four “best” teams by using their win/loss record, strength of schedule, head to head results, if they are conference champions. Just like any other system there will probably be issues and controversy but hopefully it wont be the mess as there has been in years past.

The committee won’t be using any polls to help them in their selection process but I am just for examples. If the top four where to finish as the preseason poll suggests the semi championships could be #1 Alabama vs. #4 Stanford and #2 Ohio State vs #3 Oregon. That would be awesome right well there’s a good possibility Ohio State could be left out looking in. The problem would be strength of schedule and right now Ohio State’s is very weak. Another SEC team could jump them and it would be SEC vs Pac 12 games.

This is where the non conference schedule is very key to teams like Ohio State while they wait for the rest of the B1G to get better. I know the Buckeyes have key non conference games scheduled years in advance and Oklahoma Sooners is coming up and years past they played teams like USC, Texas and Miami. No one could have seen that Cal wasn’t going to be as terrible as they are now. I love the idea of Ohio State playing other Ohio teams as a way to help that school out and its a way of giving back but it would seem to me those days might be coming to an end. Could we see where they play a game versus the SEC, Pac 12, Big 12, the ACC’s (new and old).

Strengths on Offense

OSU FootballWith the Buckeyes returning nine starters on offense, fans have high expectations. Led by Heisman hopeful Braxton Miller the Ohio State offense is definitely going to put up points. Braxton is surrounded with great receivers, a good back field and a solid offensive line. The offensive line is going to have four senior starters, leaving a spot at Right Tackle. The Ohio State Offense is going to be a huge factor on the Buckeye’s success for the 2013 season.

Braxton Miller:

braxton_millerBraxton Miller is the key to the Buckeye offense. When Braxton is clicking, and the running game is contributing, the Buckeye offense is one of the best in the country. A big question coming into the 2013 season is if Braxton can stay healthy and if he can complete 60-70 percent of his passes. If Miller can do this, the Buckeye offense is going to be dominant. Buckeye fans are looking to see Braxton’s full potential come out this season. Coach Herman stated that he would like to call less designed runs for Miller and more pass plays where Braxton can be effective as a dual threat. Also, heading into his junior season Braxton is growing into a bigger leadership role. In conclusion, the Buckeyes rely on Braxton to make huge contributions and lead the offense.

The Back Field:

hi-res-6693518_display_imageBraxton Miller will not be the only one trotting into the end-zone this season. But, Carlos Hyde is suspended for at least three games. Hyde ran for 970 yards last season and scored 16 touchdowns. The big question is, who is going to step up in the backfield? In my opinion, Rod Smith is going to have a load to carry due to Hyde’s suspension. Smith is entering his Junior year and showed that he can be relied on after the Penn State game. In my opinion, the Penn State game showed that Smith is going to be able to contribute in the running game along with Carlos Hyde (After the suspension). Buckeye fans will also see contributions from Dontre Wilson and Bri’onte Dunn. Hopefully, the first three games are Carlos Hyde’s only missed games.

Wide Receivers:

ncf_a_brown_gb1_576The Buckeye offense is returning a great wide receiver core. In my opinion, Devin Smith, Chris Fields, and Corey Brown are all going to have solid seasons. With one year under Urban’s offense and chemistry with Braxton, the passing game is going to be crisp for the Buckeyes. All three receivers can be go-to guys. Every little thing ties in around these three players. If the Buckeyes can get consistent contributions from these players this opens up the running game. Hyde had a great season even with a bad balance in the offense. With Smith, Fields and Brown the Buckeye offense will be able to have a good balance. Experience is something this offense does not lack, especially with Fields and Brown being seniors. Corey Brown seemed to be Braxton’s main target, but Braxton has plenty of great receivers to distribute the ball to.

Offensive Line:

ny_g_fragel_b1_576The Buckeye offensive line is returning 4 of starters. All four are going to be seniors, except an open position at right tackle. Many believe that Taylor Decker will be getting the start at right tackle. But, this position can be up for grabs. In my opinion, the line is lead by Jack Mewhort who is also a team captain. This experienced offensive line is going to be crucial for the passing and running game. These five big guys up front deserve every ounce of credit for the offensive success. The starting line will include: Jack Mewhort, Andrew Norwell, Corey Linsley, Marcus Hall and a possibility of Taylor Decker. Having an experienced offensive line is a huge bonus for an offense. Especially for an offense with 9 returning starters. In my opinion, this is going to be one of the best offenses in the country.

The Best of the B1G: #9 James White

b1g_iconAs we get into the top ten players we come across a guy who is 21st on his school’s all-time rushing yards list (less than 300 yards away from jumping to 12th) despite having played behind two players in the top eight. He led his team in rushing yards his freshman season, but has never done so again, and has never led the team in carries. If you guessed Wisconsin senior running back James White, great job! During White’s freshman season, he was a part of a remarkable rushing display by the Badgers in which they were four yards away from having three backs cross the 1000-yard threshold. He played behind John Clay (8th all-time) and Montee Ball (2nd all-time), yet had more yards than both of them that season averaging an impressive 6.74 yards per carry! This is the first season in which White will be the top-tier back as Ball left for the NFL (2nd round to the Broncos) after breaking the FBS records for both rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns in a career.

james-whiteUnfortunately for White, his head coach Bret Bielema, who was a strong proponent of the running game, left to coach at Arkansas. In comes Gary Anderson from Utah State as Bielema’s successor and White now faces his second consecutive season with a new set of position coaches. Badgers fans should find some comfort in the fact that Anderson ran the ball more than he passed it last season with the Aggies (473 vs. 420) and that running back Kerwynn Williams ran the ball over 200 times. White also lost two of his offensive linemen to the NFL (Travis Frederick, C, 1st round, Cowboys; Ricky Wagner, OT, 5th round, Ravens), however, Bielema has always done a great job at stockpiling talent on the line.

The schedule that White and the Badgers face this season could help in White having a strong season. They avoid playing the defenses of Michigan and Michigan State (unfortunately, perhaps, they also avoid the team against which they rushed for 539 yards last season: Nebraska) and get BYU and Penn State at home. Visits to Arizona State and Ohio State could pose problems to the running game because there’s a decent chance they could be playing from behind early in both game. On the other hand, the Badgers’ deficiency in the passing game may force Anderson to try to turn to the running game regardless. White averaged an unbelieveable 17.60 yards on third down season and a whopping 27.67 yards on third down with 10+ to go so Anderson shouldn’t be scared to hand him the ball in nearly any situation.

Instead of following the trend that has swept college football over the past several years in which players transfer when they don’t win the starting job immediately, White made an impact as a freshman despite being third of the depth chart and now, as a senior, gets his chance to prove what he can do. He won’t have to do it alone. Melvin Gordon made a name for himself as a freshman last year rushing for 602 yards and averaging 10 yards per carry. Badger Nation should be excited about the running game yet again this season led by James White who should easily break the 1500-yard mark. If they can get any production from their quarterbacks (to keep defenses from constantly loading the box) the Badgers could even make a run at a 9 or 10 win season. I think Anderson may turn to junior college transfer Tanner McEvoy, but we’ll have to see about that.

MotSag Chat with Johnnie Dixon

4star_recruit_iconI had the chance to talk to Johnnie Dixon the 6″0 187 lb. 2014 wide receiver from Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Johnnies’ recruitment with Ohio State looked like more of a courtesy in the beginning when he talked to the staff until he came up for a unofficial visit and participated in a OSU camp. Ever since that visit his interest in Ohio State sparked and he has put them in his top 3. Johnnie is a great athlete that allows him to be a mismatch for any corner back trying to cover him. Johnnie mentions his game still needs some fine tuning and it doesn’t appear the Buckeyes are worried one bit about his weakness as the are going after him very hard.
