Position Preview: Power Forward
Except for a couple years between Terrance Dials and Dallas Lauderdale, the past decade has seen a bruiser at the Power Forward position for the Buckeyes. Offense was not their prowess (except for Dials’ senior year) nor their preference. Lauderdale, with his long arms and barrel chest would rather knock you over than fill up the offensive stat sheet. Evan Ravenel, this year’s only “power forward” on the 2012-2013 Ohio State Buckeye Basketball team will continue the tradition of defense-first, hard-nose Power Forwards.
Evan Ravenel (6′ 8″ 250 lbs. SR; Tampa, Florida) is the only senior on this year’s basketball team. Last year, he averaged 3.4 points per game and 2.2 rebounds per game and played a pivotal role in more than one game last year. He played admirably in Jared Sullinger’s absence the first time the Buckeyes played Kansas back in December and he played big minutes against Michigan State (in which William Buford hit a last second shot to win the game). He isn’t going to wow you with his offensive game but Ravenel will impress with his effort and toughness.
While Matta still has not finalized his starting line-up, it is looking more and more like Ravenel will be on of the first players off of Matta’s bench. Right now, the assumption is that Deshaun Thomas will start on the floor at the “four” position. I think this is a good situation. Ravenel is experienced and will be able to support the younger players coming off the bench with him. He will also be able to come in to a game at a crucial moment and provide a calming influence, bringing stability to the second unit and providing needed leadership to the floor. Along with that, Matta can (and probably will) use Ravenel situationally at the Center position.
Ravenel has seen quite a bit of success as a part of a Final Four team and a #1 team. His defense and mental toughness will be an asset for Thad Matta and the Buckeyes. Don’t look for flash from Evan. Just expect solid play and strong efforts, night-in, night-out.

BUCKEYE CAGERS: First things first, we have begun a preview of the Ohio State Men’s Basketball Team wherein we will be looking at the players, coaches, and what to expect for the upcoming season. There will be some serious expecations yet again for this Buckeye team and this team should be able to deliver. You can check out our first positional preview, the point guards, done by one of the four original MotSaG bloggers, Trevor (nee Zeke).
WISCONSIN: The Wisconsin game time has been set for 3:30 PM EST on the ABC/ESPN2 rotation depending on where you happening to be sitting next Saturday afternoon. I have a funny feeling I won’t be leaving the house in the middle of the third quarter to have a nice dinner out with Mrs. Kaiser.
THE TEBOW CONNECTION: I think a lot of Buckeye fans held Tim Tebow in pretty low regard during his years at Florida. The cards were stacked against him from the get-go, really. It of course started out with his contribution to the victory over Our Buckeyes in the 2006 National Championship game. Then, you throw in his humility and religious beliefs and the real possibility that he could have become the second two-time Heisman winner and he’s pretty much the worst thing ever. But for as much as I rooted against him, I always thought he was one of those guys I’d love to have on my team. So now, it’s with mixed emotions that we have to consider the fact that he kind of is on our team. Doug Lesmirises has a Q&A with Urban’s favored son, Tim Tebow:
“… And I guess as hard as it is for me to say, I am a pretty big fan now of The Ohio State University.”
“I think I got him a shirt,” Meyer said with a smile.
Speaking of the possibility of Tebow mentoring Braxton, Meyer said, “But I would love for those guys to get face-to-face, even train a little bit together, work out together. Tim is so busy, but I’m going to push for that to happen real hard.”
I think I’m okay with that. Combine Braxton’s freakish talent with Tebow’s work ethic and Braxton basically becomes the T-1000.
Rini over at WFNY has a slightly different take on Miller taking on a more Tebow-esque style of play.
TO THE VICTORS GO THE SPOILS: No surprises here, but Ryan Freaking Shazier and Bri’onte Dunn both picked up accolades in the Big Ten for their play last Saturday against Illinois.
BCS’ING: So Ohio State is ranked 5th in the AP Poll this week, and that may cause you to wonder where they would fit in the BCS picture at this point in the season. Brian Fremeau (writer for Football Outsiders) writes at ESPN’s Insider ($) that chances aren’t great this year, but “the truth is that the 2012 campaign really sets the stage well for strong seasons to come for Ohio State. We run projections for upcoming seasons based on Program FEI ratings, a five-year weighted efficiency measure, and Ohio State has one of the best five-year profiles in the country. They’ll be well-positioned to take advantage next season and beyond.”
UNIFORM SWAG: Ohio State’s Basketball Twitter tweeted yesterday the uniforms they will be donning for this Friday’s game against Marquette in the Carrier Classic. Tip-off is set for 7 PM EST.
HE’S CRAFTY: Speaking of OSU Basketball and Twitter, this was also “a thing” yesterday. (Vico was nowhere to be found. Some thoughts are probably best left untweeted)
Hyde, Miller and Buckeyes Roll over Illinois, 52-22
Braxton Miller and crew picked up right where they left off this afternoon, grinding and throwing their way to a perfect 10-0 record, beating Illinois soundly and unequivocally, 52-22.
The defense once again came to play, limiting the admittedly anemic Illinois offense to a paltry 170 yards. The Illini couldn’t get anything going on the ground or through the air. Nathan Scheelhaase was pestered all game long by Simon and Williams and the defense stonewalled whatever rushing attack Illinois tried to mount.
The linebacking corps also came to play, with Shazier and Boren keeping Scheelhaasein in front of them and containing Donovonn Young and the Illinois ground game.
Braxton definitely “went back to quarterbacking school” after the Penn State game. His passes looked much crisper and his pass to Rod Smith on his 50 yard wheel route was a thing of beauty. He also is clearly developing a rapport with Nick Vannett. Braxton also pitched in with 73 yards on the ground and a TD run to top of another impressive performance.
For his part, Carlos Hyde put together another strong effort, carrying the ball 18 times for 137 yards and three touchdowns.
At this point, the Ohio State ground game is a known quantity. They’re going to grind out yards on the ground and get them in bunches at times. The passing game is still nascent, but is showing signs of development.
All was not perfect, of course. Special teams coverage left something to be desired and personal fouls kept drives alive longer than they should have. Fumbles can be costly. But we’ll let the coaches worry about that and just enjoy another dominating performance.

In Case You Missed It
Well, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Miss me? I missed you. We only have so many more times to do this this year, only so many more times to memorialize this strange season in so many picture frames, as it were. It’s hard to believe it’s already week nine, heading toward the double digits.
SPEAKING OF WEEK TEN: The kick-off time for the Illinois game has been set for 3:30 on the ESPN.
BLAME YOU, BLAME ME, BLAME EVERYONE!: There’s not a whole lot more to be said about Saturday’s dismantling of the Penn State bandwagon that YNBA hasn’t already said, but I do want to point out just a couple things. These have probably already been said elsewhere, but bear with me. First off, as YNBA adroitly pointed out, those poor beleaguered Penn State fans have been beating to death that straw-man ref they built. It must feel so good. The cognitive dissonance is palpable. But those guys are actually sane compared to what I read over at BWI (Blue White Illustrated) after the game Saturday night. I’m choosing not to link them because I don’t want to subject you to that nonsense, but feel free to wade into their bizarro world if you want to. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Speaking of complaining about the refs, we all know that the biggest complaint came on the holding call against Penn State’s punt return team. As we often have to do with defending the pass interference call against Miami in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, we must go, as they say, to the scoreboard: SCOREBOARD (via 7-11W).
Let me just set the scene. Bryce Haynes had previously been one of the first Buckeyes down on punt coverage, making a nice tackle the punt before. Penn State’s punt return team is instructed that someone (let’s call him Brad Bars) will be playing the part of Gandalf to Haynes’ Balrog. “You shall not pass” indeed. SCOREBOARD
(Full disclosure: I was a long snapper in high school. I had this, and all manner of other offenses, occur to me on the regular).
And we won’t even get into the Chaos theory that Penn State has to claim in order for that holding call to affect the game. As sportsMonkey pointed out to me this morning during our daily IMs: “so that play in the 2nd quarter… somehow made the OSU defense sack McGloin in the 3rd, then caused him to throw a pick six, then caused Miller to throw an INT, then caused PSU to kick a FG…”
And so on.
THE BEST DEAN SHAZIER IN THE LAND: I told SYR on Friday after Ryan Shazier tweeted:
https://twitter.com/ryanshazier10/status/261838212270526464
that I no longer worried about the Buckeyes in this game. Shazier had his coming out party last year against Penn State and was primed for another breakout performance. His third quarter (and really, the whole game’s) performance bore that out. And his effort has been recognized by the B1G, being named Co-Defensive Player of the Week. Much deserved and a great tribute to his friend.
I’LL JUST SLIDE:
“Oh my God, Carlos [Hyde] was like, ‘You all right?’ so I need to practice that,” Miller said.
Yeah, Braxton’s going to have to practice avoiding those hits.
RUN, FAT BOY: Maybe it’s just me, but Jake Stoneburner runs like Tim Tebow.
MISC: No surprise here, Ohio State has cemented itself as the MOST POWERFUL TEAM IN THE BIG TEN. After the Michigan loss, I am obliged to link this. Metric Football: the Liter Bowl.
