Basketball Week in Review/Preview

Another solid week of basketball from the Buckeyes as the prepare for the toughest week of basketball they’ll face until tournament time. This isn’t going to be easy. A pissed-off Michigan team tonight could be quite the buzzsaw for the Buckeyes. And then Indiana on Sunday. I think we all can agree that emerging from this daisy cutter of a week with one win will be quite the achievement. Win them both? Thad Matta gets a statue out front of the Schottenstein center.

Week in Review

1/29/13: Wisconsin 49 – #11 Ohio State 58 (16-4, 6-2 Big Ten)

Wisconsin acted like they were allergic to the painted area and were throwing up threes like it was their job. It turns out that they are really bad at their jobs and should probably be fired, or at least sent back to washing the dishes. Especially that ginger. They can’t run the registers like that. They hit 36.5% of the field goal attempts and took ZERO free throws. This game was not a great showing for the Badgers.

Deshaun Thomas led the way with 25. Laquinton Ross chipped in 8 points including a promising 2-2 from beyond the arc.

2/2/13: Nebraska 56 – #11 Ohio State 63 (17-4, 7-2 Big Ten)

First off, I really have to tip my hat to the Nebraska fans. They were really into this game, making more noise than I thought a Nebraska crowd could muster for a basketball game. They came alive at key points in the game, especially when it was closer than it really had any right to be.

This game shouldn’t have ever been that close, but it was. Nebraska got solid, even inspired, play out of their big man Andre “Big Continent” Almeida, pulling down 8 rebounds (3 of them offensive) and 3 blocks. For a guy who has got the vertical of a tortoise, he was nimble on his feet and used his substantial mass and personal gravitational field to his benefit most effectively.

On the Buckeye’s side, Amir Williams asserted himself in the first half, pulling down rebounds and getting to the free throw line. Lenzelle Smith was the game’s top scorer, accounting for 21 of the Buckeyes 63 points and hopefully getting used to scoring when Deshaun is having an off-night or is getting the majority of the defensive attention.

Week in Preview

2/5/13 @ 9 PM (ESPN) #3 Michigan (20-2, 7-2 Big Ten) vs #10 Ohio State (17-4, 7-2 Big Ten)

This game is a make or break for Michigan, really. They’ve now lost on Ohio State and Indiana’s home courts and MUST defend home court if they want to be counted among the elite. I think Ohio State is going to have its hands full and more this evening against Michigan. Aaron Craft did a number (proving he’s the best PG in the B1G in the process) against Trey Burke last time these two teams met and you’ve got to believe that Burke will take that challenge personally. If he’s on and Craft can’t stop him, it’s going to be a long night.

Michigan also has too much talent around Burke to struggle like this forever. If Stauskas or Tim Hardaway Jr. can hit open shots, Michigan is going to have smooth sailing. But if Ohio State’s defense continues to stymy the Michigan offense and holds Burke in check, Michigan fans are going to be despondent. (Please let this happen, basketball gods)

2/10/13 @ 1 PM (CBS) #1 Indiana (20-2, 8-1 Big Ten) at Ohio State (17-4, 7-2 Big Ten)

I really, really, really want to be Indiana this Sunday. It’s just two days after my birthday. I’ll take a victory as a belated birthday gift, Buckeyes. I won’t even be mad.

In Case You Missed It

In case you missed it is Men of the Scarlet and Gray’s semi-weekly look at items that would interest the casual and hard-core Ohio State fan, be they news items, interesting blog posts or funny memes you probably saw on Reddit last week. It’s all here and it’s all for you. Have a tip that should be included in the next ICYMI? Send it our way!

WE STILL LOVE YOU TED GINN: Ted Ginn’s punt return in the third quarter of the Super Bowl almost went the distance but still factored hugely into San Francisco’s furious come back Sunday night against the hated, detested, deplorable Ravens. Teddy Ballgame rewarded all the loyal Buckeye fans after his run by throwing up the big O for all to see (via sportsMonkey’s Twitter feed):

YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE ALL THE TIME: But this time, it sure seems like Ohio State didn’t please anybody with the latest update of their logos. The Ohio State seal received a minor face lift, opting for a block O in the middle of the seal instead of the legacy circles, but you would have thought the new “Athletic Logo” had set people’s houses on fire, the way people were talking about it on Twitter. I’m personally not a fan, but I guess I’m in the “I only hate it a little” minority.

SHUT YOUR EYES, MARION!: For whatever reason, Michigan will be unleashing these nightmares on the viewing public tomorrow night. EGADS.

IF PHIL SAYS IT, IT’S TRUE: This is an ESPN Insider link ($), so I won’t quote all the good bits, but I’ll just add this to the pile of preseason love that the Buckeyes are going to be getting. This time it’s Phil Steele, ranking them an early #2 for 2013.

ETC: For some reason, I think these deer antler spray stories are going to be coming out more and more…

Lenzelle Smith leads Ohio State over Nebraska

OSU LogoThe Buckeyes take one from Nebraska, 63-56 in a game that felt closer at times than the final score would indicate.

The Buckeyes got off to a quick start in the first half, going up by nine points early, only to see the lead disappear as the Huskers fought back, taking a lead 14-12. After back and forth, Ohio State took a convincing lead as the first half came to a close, punctuated by a steal by Aaron Craft that led to a Deshaun Thomas dunk.

Amir Williams had a solid half, aggressively going to the basket and drawing numerous fouls. Williams still needs to develop a strong move up with the ball when he gets rebounds around the basket. Too often when he gets the ball around his waist he struggles to get the ball back up to the hoop. He gets bailed out by the fouls but if he was able to go up strong, he would be unstoppable.

The second half started out like the first half ended, with the Buckeyes pushing the lead up to 13 points. As the second half waned, Nebraska slowly worked themselves back into the game due to some poor Buckeye shooting and decent defense and rebounding by the Cornhuskers. They would get as close as five but an acrobatic reverse layup by Craft and timely free throws at the end maintained the lead for the Buckeyes.

Lenzelle Smith was the high scorer in the game, leading everyone with 21 points. Amir Williams pulled down eight rebounds and had three blocks.

The Buckeyes now wait to see how the Michigan/Indiana game plays out before the Buckeyes take the Wolverines on again in Ann Arbor next Tuesday and welcome the Hoosiers to Columbus on Sunday.

Cris Carter Elected to the Hall of Fame

CrisCarterFor a player as talented and as accomplished as Cris Carter was, it’s a shame it took them this long to induct him in to the NFL Hall of Fame. He’s been eligible for far too long.

But Cris is part of the class of the 2013 HOF inductees, and that’s a good thing. From Yahoo Sports:

Cris Carter entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick out of Ohio State by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1987 Supplemental draft and would go on to catch 1,101 passes for 13,899 yards and 130 touchdowns, ranking second in NFL history in both receptions and receiving touchdowns at the time of his retirement. While with the Minnesota Vikings, Carter set an NFL single-season record with 122 receptions in 1994, the first of eight consecutive Pro Bowl seasons (1994-2001) in his 16-season career.

Congratulations, #2!

Open Thread Friday: Motivational Speeches

No, we’re not talking that kind of motivational speeches. We’re talking about the kind of speech that gets the brain pumping whatever chemicals are responsible for motivation and drive. We’re talking the speech that would motivate you to punch out a horse or run through a brick wall. Kind of like the speech that hit YouTube last month of Ohio State assistant coach Kerry Coombs talking to some future Buckeye recruits, including Missouri running back Ezekiel Elliot.

So the other day the sportsMonkey and I were discussing our favorite motivational speeches. What we were trying to do is figure out where Coach Coombs’ speech ranks among those. So for this Friday’s Open Thread, let’s discuss some favorite Motivational Speeches.

In Case You Missed It

CavaliersIn case you missed it is Men of the Scarlet and Gray’s semi-weekly look at items that would interest the casual and hard-core Ohio State fan, be they news items, interesting blog posts or funny memes you probably saw on Reddit last week. SCHEDULING CONFLICTS: The talk of the past couple days has been the possibility of a ten game Big Ten schedule. As with everything about college football, this is more about money than anything else. With just two non-conference games, big name teams are not going to play Big Ten teams in Big Ten country without a return trip to their place.

“Most of us need seven home games in order to make our local budgets,” Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said. “Is there a way to overcome that? I don’t know. We’ll have to look at that. The conference is aware that it’s an issue.”

BEST B1G IN THE BCS ERA: Tom Dienhart of BTN ranked the best B1G Teams of the BCS Era. Ohio State shows up in six of the twelve spots, including the top 3. Hard to argue with his rankings, but I think I would still have the 2005 Buckeye team in the list, probably replacing the 2007 team at #5 (after the 2005 Penn State team). I think we’re going to revisit this topic to ultimately decide how to rank all the Ohio State teams of the BCS era.

COME TO OHIO SHTATE: College football recruiting has never interested me at the level of other Buckeye fans. Our own Sylvester Yon-Rambo has covered the majority of our recruiting content here and he loves it. But one thing’s for sure: there’s never a dull moment when Urban Meyer is involved. But this year has been stranger than others, it seems. Maybe it’s Twitter.

DON’T CALL IT A COMEBACK: There’s chatter that Greg Oden, in a bid to return healthy to the NBA, has the Cleveland Cavaliers on a short list of teams he’s interested in. As a Cavs fan and an Oden fan I am very much in favor of this signing. He’s a low risk, high reward signing (since he will come cheap) and the Cavs need a big man in the worst way. He said last night at the Wisconsin game that he’s planning on returning next season after rehabbing and strengthening his injury-prone knees.

ET CETERA: Oh OBC, don’t ever change… Shame, shame, Alabama players, SI knows your name… We shared this on our Facebook page last night, but don’t forget to vote for Ohio State to be the school on the cover next version of EA’s NCAA football video game.

Ohio State tops Wisconsin, 58-49

OSU LogoAnytime Wisconsin is in town (or playing basketball ever), you know you’re in for, if nothing else, a really dragging, boring anti-excitement basketball game. Bo Ryan’s going to bore you to death and hope he can take the opposition down with you. Lulling you to sleep with 34-second possesion after 34-second possession.

What we actually got were three million three point attempts (28 but who’s counting) by Wisconsin versus a fairly well spread offensive attack and another swarming defensive effort by the Buckeyes.

Both teams got off to a blistering start, scoring not three, not four, but five points in the first six plus minutes of the first half. Yep, we were playing Wisconsin.

Ohio State initially got solid production going though Deshaun Thomas, with DT scoring the first eight points. Buckeyes went away from Thomas, looking for another scorer to step up the challenge. Aaron Craft scored eight points in the first half, mostly going to the rim.

The second half was a close back and forth match until the Buckeyes, aided by scorers not named Thomas (just kidding, it was mostly Thomas), went on a 15-0 run while the defense forced Wisconsin into some ill advised shots while they went cold, missing seven straight.

It also helped that Wisconsin considered the lane to be lava with very little scoring in the paint and headed to the free-throw line zero times. Not going to win very many games not getting to the free throw line.

Overall, LaQuinton Ross pitched in with a couple timely threes, Aaron Craft tossed in 13 points and pulled down a team leading 7 rebounds. Deshaun led everyone with 25.

The Buckeyes move into third place with a 6-2 record in the Big Ten.

MEYER IS AN OPPORTUNIST: So says Frank Schwab at Yahoo’s Dr. Saturday blog:

The Ducks recruit very well, with the sparkling facilities, recent success and the shine from all that Nike gear. If a coaching change was going to cause those top recruits to have second thoughts before signing day, Meyer was going to exploit it.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say as long as Urban Meyer is at Ohio State, these type of “tactics” are going to continue. I wonder if those fans that accuse Urban Meyer of shady tactics secretly wish their coach would do the same. But this type of behavior doesn’t go unnoticed by big-time high school recruits, or their parents:

That’s (apparently) Biff Poggi, football coach and father of Michigan recruit Henry Poggi on the state of recruiting affairs in the Big Ten.

SPEAKING ABOUT RECRUITS: Let’s all agree that tweeting at recruits is just another creepy thing that can be done on the internet and there’s enough creepiness already. Adding to it by tweeting at some high school kid is just not necessary. Don’t don’t it, ok?

TICKETS! WHO NEEDS TICKETS?!: I’ve been buying tickets to Ohio State football games since my first season on campus in 1998 and yes, prices have risen steadily for fifteen years. Of course, the most drastic increase was the “Student-to-Alumnus” ticket price increase. But I understand the price of doing business involves ever growing costs (like supporting 30+ other sports at a major university) so I guess I didn’t get as upset as others did about the proposed changes to ticket prices. I actually think the idea makes sense:

The Athletic Council will ask that two games for the 2013, ’14, ’15 and ’17 seasons be designated as “premier” games. Those games’ costs will range from $110 to $150. The price of the 2016 premier game, undoubtedly against Michigan, will cost $175. That’s 21/2 times the cost of last year’s $70 ticket. Wisconsin and Penn State are the most likely targets for premium status in 2013.

Michigan tickets have always fetched a premium MUCH higher than $175 bucks a piece. Everyone had to know that Ohio State is clearly aware of the secondary ticket market and what they were “missing out” on and it was only a matter of time before they got a bigger piece of the pie.

WHEN YOU PEAK…: This talk of increasing ticket prices was part of CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd asking: Has college football peaked?

I’VE GOT A BAD FEELING ABOUT THIS: For some reason, I just don’t see this ending well for Buckeyes or their fans if they ever get into hot water again:

Carr is one of eight new appointments to the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions, which was approved by the NCAA’s board of directors during a weekend meeting, according to a summary report.

Oh, sure, right. I’m sure Mr. Carr will be able to separate his emotions and feelings toward a certain school in the Buckeye state and be completely objective to whatever evidence is produced against them. Right.

I’VE GOT A GOLDEN TICKET: I have to admit that even though it ended a while ago, I think this ticket “scheme” that Minnesota cooked up with their Golden Ticket promotion was brilliant.

ETC SINCE THE LAST ICYMI: Linebacker Conner Crowell and freshman offensive lineman Joey O’Connor are no longer members of the Ohio State football team… Verlon Reed has transferred Findlay… Speaking of wide receivers that didn’t pan out at Ohio State, Duron Carter has declared for the NFL draft (and will probably be drafted [and has always been more physically talented than you {and plays more Xbox than you do, too}])… Pointing and laughing at Bret Bielema never gets old… I’ve been saying this for a while now, but enjoy football while we still can… Big screens keep on getting bigger
