Buckeyes Cannot Be Complacent Against Northern Illinois Huskies

Leave it to a native Ohioan to spell it out what needs to be done in order to win. West Point graduate, Civil War general, and former United State President, I am willing to bet Ulysses S. Grant would have given football coaching a shot if it had been around in his day.
While counting down the days until the 2015 college football season begins, I thought I would pass the time by ranking and reviewing the upcoming 2015 Ohio State opponents, from least difficult to most difficult. This ranking system of mine will be highly subjective, prone to possibilities of injuries, transfers, or other unforeseen events that could dramatically impact its accuracy. As always, I encourage comments and critique about what I have projected.

Northern Illinois Huskies (Game 3)
2015 OSU Opponent Ranking: 7 out of 12
Players Recruited By Ohio State: N/A
Game Date: September 19, 2015
Kickoff Time: 3:30pm EST. ABC/ESPN telecast.
Location: Ohio Stadium
Rationale For The Ranking: Last season, Northern Illinois went to Northwestern and defeated the Wildcats, 23-15. In 2013, Northern Illinois went to Iowa and Purdue, and was victorious in both contests (30-27 over Iowa; 55-24 over Purdue). The point I am trying to raise with you is that Northern Illinois is the type of team that thrives on being the underdog, coming into a hostile environment, and playing well enough to win over a higher-ranked opponent.
I can already hear the disbelieving commentary and can see the eyes rolling from the skeptics. “Minnich actually believes that Northern Illinois can play with Ohio State…”
Here is another reason why I am concerned ~ where Northern Illinois falls on the schedule.
Do not forget who Ohio State will play the week before – Hawaii. The same Hawaii that I am predicting will be little to no contest at all for Ohio State.
Hence my reasoning – after what should be a considerably easy win for Ohio State, it may be challenging to keep the players properly focused and not become too complacent. It kind of reminds me of a classic quote from the character Tony “Duke” Evers, who played the part of Apollo Creed’s trainer in the first Rocky ~ “He doesn’t know it’s a damn show. He thinks it’s a damn fight.”.
Prediction: Ohio State will be a considerable favorite over Northern Illinois, and may not come out with guns blazing against the Huskies. The longer this stays in this category, with Ohio State possibly just going through the motions, the more Northern Illinois will believe the upset is possible. Ohio State has the superior talent and potential to end this quickly, but it will be interesting to see if my fears were warranted on September 19th in Ohio Stadium.
Everyone loves an underdog. It will be interesting to see how Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer prepares his Buckeyes against a team that thrives on the underdog role.

My Prediction: 5 breakout players for the 2015 season

After a very exciting championship run, led by a young 2013 recruiting class, the near future looks very bright for the Ohio State Buckeyes. After losing 5 seniors to the draft, and several more that went undrafted, there are players that need to, and will step up to help to repeat this season. Here, I’ll take my best guess at who those guys will be.
1. Noah Brown – 6-2, 225 lb Sophomore Wide Receiver from Sparta, NJ. This is a pretty sure, and easy pick. He played very limited minutes last year with only 1 carry for -4 yards, and 1 catch for 9 yards, but he does the Evan Spencer type things that don’t really go in the stat-book. He was relied on to be a great blocker in  the run game, and they consistently would run the ball in his direction when he was on the field.  After dropping about twenty pounds from last year, he is primed for a good season. “Noah Brown has had probably as good of a spring as I could’ve wanted” said WR coach Zach Smith. Urban Meyer even said “If he just takes care of more business in the classroom, then I was going to announce him as one of the starting three of four.”
2. Curtis Samuel -Â 5-11 200 lb Sophomore RB/H-Back from Brooklyn, NY. He is another easy pick, and one that almost doesn’t count as a breakout player, because he had a pretty solid season last year, especially for a true freshman. Urban recruited him for the H-Back position, but he looked good at RB, so they kept him there. Early, in the season, many people thought that he was perhaps the best RB on the team. After a fumble against the University of Cincinnati, he didn’t get as many touches throughout the rest of the season, but he still ended up with 383 rushing yards, and 6 TD’s on 58 carries. “The days of Curtis Samuel playing 10 plays are over. It’s our job to get him on the field for 40 or 50 plays.” Urban Meyer said after making the decision to move him to H-Back mostly because of how good Ezekiel Elliott is. Tony Alford (New RB coach) remembers the first time Curtis caught his attention “Literally the first drill we did in winter conditioning I was here and I blew the whistle and he did something. I remembered I turned and looked and said, ‘What was that?’ It was like a flash.” I expect Curtis to be very successful at his new position.
3. Dante Booker -Â 6-3 233 lb Sophomore Linebacker from St. Vincent – St. Mary in Akron, Ohio. In 2013, he won Ohio Mr. Football (First defensive player since Andy Katzenmoyer in ’95), and according to 247sports, he was the 13th best player in the nation coming out of High-School. Even though the starting linebackers have already been established (and he’s not one of them), I expect him to find some quality playing time, and once that happens he could take off. In the two deep he could realistically back up the WILL (Joshua Perry), and the MIKE (Raekwon McMillan). He will likely be the 2nd string WILL, and Camren Williams hasn’t proven that he can step up at the MIKE, and even though Nick Conner had a flashy spring game, Dante has more experience and is much better fundamentally, so there is plenty of need for him to be able to step up. When talking about Dante, Joshua Perry said “The kid, like I’ve said before, he’s an athletic freak, so when stuff starts coming together it looks really good out there.”
4. Erick Smith -Â 6-0 202 lb Safety from Cleveland, Ohio. He was a member of the 2014 recruiting class, and part of the trio that came from the Buckeye pipeline in Glenville. (Now only a duo since Marcelys transferred to UK). Coming into his freshman year last year, he had high expectations from the coaches and the fans. He was going to be needed specially since we lost 4 safeties that previous off-season. He didn’t get to play much last year because Tyvis Powell and Vonn Bell fortunately stayed healthy. He was a key and consistent member of one of the best kick-off teams in the nation (The Piranhas). Also, when he did get game action he showed what all they hype was about with his ball-hawking, and hard-hitting abilities. He was also one of the more impressive players in this year’s spring game with 2 interceptions. “Erick’s the man. If I ever break a shoestring, ain’t nobody going to blink an eye. Everybody’s going to be like, ‘We’re good.'” said known comedian Tyvis Powell. I think Erick will have a great season even though there’s an experienced and skilled pair of safeties ahead of him.
5. Tyquan Lewis -Â 6-4 260 lb Defensive End from Tarboro, NC. He was a member of the 2013 class, which is arguably the best recruiting class in Ohio State history, and he was one of the five to enroll early. He redshirted his freshman year, and then played sparingly this past year, playing behind Joey Bosa on the two-deep. After a year without a true Viper, and Steve Miller and Rashad Frazier filling in for Noah Spence at that position, Tyquan is looked to finally bring it back. Â He will most likely be the starter, but he will face some stiff competition in Sam Hubbard and Jalyn Holmes. Larry Johnson wants that rotation to keep the guys fresh, so I anticipate that Tyquan will do very well this year. Larry Johnson and Joey Bosa also had very high praise for Tyquan this spring. “He’s playing much faster than he was playing last year, and I think he understands the defensive concept a little bit more. He’s had a really outstanding spring.” said Coach Johnson. When asked what stood out about Tyquan to Joey, he replied with “Speed, he’s physical, he’s just a freak out there.”
Others:
Tommy Schutt– Injuries have haunted his career thus far, but Urban and the Buckeyes will be looking for that senior to step up in place of Michael Bennett.
Gareon Conley– Replacing Doran Grant, Gareon will be looking to show that he is better than what happened in the first quarter in East Lansing last year. He has so much athleticism and talent, I think he will step in very nicely, and potentially be better than Doran was.

My favorite Ohio State memory would have to be in the fall of 2012 when Ohio State took on the mighty Purdue Boilermakers. This was Urban Meyer’s first year with the Buckeyes, and our sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller (Who was my favorite football player ever at the time) was becoming very well known amongst all fans and opposing teams. Even though I thought this would be an easy win against a lousy opponent, I was still excited to be able to see Urban Meyer, his so far undefeated team, and my favorite player, Braxton Miller, live for the first time.
I woke up early that Saturday morning of the game and began the 2 hour journey from my KY house to the Horseshoe in Columbus. After a drive that lasted forever, I made it, and decided to race on over to the pre-game Skull Session. When I entered into St. John Arena I walked right up into the front row seats, and thought I was going to have the best seats in the house for this exciting event. After about five minutes of sitting there, and mostly seeing people leave rather than enter, I finally realized I actually missed the skull session, and I felt like an idiot.
After that huge disappointment, I headed over to the stadium to get my seats and watch warm-ups. Eventually, the game was set to begin. Purdue got the ball first and looked ready to get beat. In one of the first plays, Purdue took advantage of our first-time starter at Linebacker (Zach Boren who had just been moved from fullback) and threw a TD pass to go up 6-0 (PAT was blocked). I could sense the shock in the crowd because of how early that happened, but nobody was too worried. After a couple of drives that ended in no points, Braxton finally scored to give us the lead at 7-6. “All will be fine now” was the thought from everybody. No, Purdue returned the next kickoff for a TD giving them the lead at 13-7. In the 3rd, Carlos Hyde pounded it in to regain the lead at 14-13.
Soon after that point is when the real action began. One of the scariest moments for all Buckeye fans at the time occurred. Braxton went down.
That’s truly when everybody’s mindset moved to the point that we could lose this game. Unproven and somewhat unknown QB Kenny Guiton would have to step up.
Later in the 3rd, Purdue scored again to go up 20-14. Soon after that, they even forced a safety on us to go up 22-14. I couldn’t believe I actually decided to go to a game where we were going to be upset by Purdue, and all my friends who are Ohio State haters were going to give it to me. Worst feeling in the world.
Late in the game, there was a glimmer of hope, but Kenny G threw an interception with only two minutes left in the game, and Purdue would surely finish the game from that. Everybody was shocked, and most people decided to leave and beat the traffic. I was so close to leaving as well, but I reluctantly stayed and decided to watch us lose.
We ended up getting the ball back, and Kenny G took the field once more. With less than a minute to go, he makes a clutch 34 yard throw to Devin Smith that puts us in the redzone. At this point, the crowd was starting to shake, and I could see everybody who was trying to re-enter the stadium. Then, with 3 seconds left in the game, Kenny Guiton threw a TD to Chris Fields making the game 22-20! Obviously, we had to go for the 2 point conversion, so we weren’t too excited just yet.
The ball snapped, Kenny rolled to his right, nobody was open, he couldn’t run or throw, the game was over, or so I thought. He then looked back to his left and threw to a wide open Jeff Heuerman in the end zone. The game was headed to OT! I knew the game was over from there, we couldn’t be beat with all this momentum we had just gained. Carlos punched in a score, and we held them from scoring. The game was over, we had won! The legend of Kenny G was born.

I was standing in that half-empty stadium screaming my lungs out pumped that we just came back and beat Purdue. Carmen Ohio was so sweet that Saturday afternoon in Ohio Stadium, and that ride home was so relaxing knowing we got the W. Even though it was a scare against Purdue, it was the best memory I have of Ohio State.

Maryland Terrapins (Game 6)
2015 OSU Opponent Ranking: 8 out of 12
Players Recruited By Ohio State: OL Derwin Gray, OL Damian Prince, WR Taivon Jacobs, RB Wes Brown, DL Adam McLean. Jacobs actually gave a verbal commitment to Ohio State back in 2013, but decided to sign with Maryland to be closer to his young daughter.
Game Date: October 10, 2015
Kickoff Time: 12pm EST. Telecast TBD.
Location: Ohio Stadium
Rationale For The Ranking: Last season, Ohio State traveled to play Maryland for the first time as a B1G conference opponent and won in quite convincing fashion, 52-24. Maryland could start off the non-conference portion of its 2015 schedule undefeated, with three winnable games at home (Richmond, Bowling Green, South Florida), as well as a road trip to West Virginia. Maryland gets Michigan at home before the Terrapins make their trip to Ohio Stadium. It is not beyond the realm of possibility that Maryland is undefeated coming into Columbus.
Why the low ranking, then?
The aforementioned blowout win from last season, for starters. Ohio State was not truly pushed by Maryland last season, and that was when Maryland had Stefon Diggs that the Buckeyes had to account for defensively. Diggs is now gone, after declaring for the 2015 NFL Draft. Last season, Ohio State led Maryland 31-10 at the half; I am guessing it could be more of the same in Ohio Stadium on October
Prediction: Ohio State traditionally does not have a difficult time motivation-wise as it relates to homecoming games. The home crowd, plus Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer’s exceptional skills for motivation, lead me to believe that Ohio State will come out for this game fired up and ready to go. Maryland might be able to make it a game for maybe the first half, but I have difficulty seeing the Terrapins keeping pace with the Buckeyes for long.
Maryland Head Coach Randy Edsall is trying to position the Terrapins as one of the better teams within The B1G. Playing Ohio State tough as a homecoming opponent might be a step in that direction.
By The Numbers: Is OSU At 85 Players?

One other note looking at JRs and it is extremely likely that OSU could have single digit SRs on next years team.
Also no matter how many times I tweet to OSU athletics to tell them Kyle Berger is not a SR they refuse to correct this issue lol.
Mirko Jurkovic Wont Enroll At OSU (Per Report)

Tim May of the Columbus Dispatch is reporting that one member of the 2015 recruiting class will not be enrolling on Monday with the rest of his class because of academics….
When the rest of the 2015 Ohio State recruiting class reports late Sunday for the start of summer conditioning, offensive line prospect Mirko Jurkovic Jr. will not be with them, two sources within the program confirmed for The Dispatch on Friday.
Jurkovic, originally from South Bend, Ind., by way of the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., has an academic issue that has kept him from enrolling at OSU, the sources said, though they weren’t sure of its exact nature. He was a three-star prospect, according to Rivals.com and 247sports.com.
This is the second member of the 2015 class that has left OSU as Jamel Dean did earlier in the year as well in a controversial move. Hopefully Mirko can go the JUCO route and get his issues corrected and possibly join OSU in the Winter.
OSU At Illinois May Result In Tim Beckman Being ‘Bye, Bye-Man’ In 2015

Illinois Fighting Illini (Game 10)
2015 OSU Opponent Ranking: 9 out of 12
Players Recruited By Ohio State: DB Caleb Day. Day played his high school ball at Hilliard, and turned down a scholarship from Ohio State to play for Illinois. There are other Ohioans on Illinois’ roster, but to the best of my knowledge and research, none of them were offered scholarships by Ohio State.
Game Date: November 14, 2015
Kickoff Time: TBD
Location: Memorial Stadium
Rationale For The Ranking: Remember how I wrote up above, “As always, I encourage comments and critique about what I have projected.“? I am truly anticipating my man Jeremiah Sharpe letting me have it on this one. But I will try to lay out my thinking on this.
I recognize how Memorial Stadium in Champaign, IL, has often been a challenging venue for Ohio State through the years, with Ohio State’s last visit to Champaign resulting in a 60-35 victory in 2013. That game was more representative of the poor defensive approach of the 2013 Buckeyes, more than the talent of the 2013 Fighting Illini.
Looking at Illinois’ 2015 schedule, I see a team that may be teetering on the brink of implosion when Ohio State comes into town. Illinois’ non-conference schedule should have them well-positioned at the beginning of B1G conference competition, but games that precede the Buckeyes (Nebraska, at Iowa, Wisconsin, at Penn State, at Purdue) may make them ripe for a knockout punch from Ohio State.
This could be the game that will end the Tim Beckman era at Illinois, based upon how possibly dominant Ohio State performs in this one. With all of the offseason turmoil Beckman and the program have experienced, the offseason injury to wide receiver Mike Dudek, and just the general sense of the program not moving forward competitively, it could possibly be a breaking point in Beckman’s career at Illinois.
Prediction: Right now, Illinois can point to this game as the highlight of their season, as the Buckeyes are the toughest team on the 2015 schedule (Aren’t the Buckeyes the toughest team on everyone’s schedule? But I digress.). Another key factor to remember is Ohio State plays Michigan State the following week, so it may be challenging for Ohio State Head Coach Urban Meyer to keep the players focused upon Illinois, and not looking ahead to Michigan State.
Can Illinois pull off the upset? The last Illinois victory over Ohio State in Champaign was October 12, 1991 (Illinois 10, Ohio State 7). Yes, there have been some notable close calls in Champaign since then that Buckeye fans remember (2002, 2006, 2011), but most Ohio State fans have come to dread Illinois for the upset in Ohio Stadium like in 2007. For all of the difficulties throwing the ball due to the bizarre wind conditions, Ohio State has been pretty solid in Memorial Stadium.
Will Tim Beckman be able to pull off some magic and trickery against the Buckeyes on November 14, 2015? His team’s bowl eligibility, and his job, may depend heavily upon it.
