Game Preview: San Diego State Aztecs

osuHelmetOne could say that college football fans in San Diego and Columbus have had similar experiences with respect to their favorite teams. Both San Diego State and Ohio State football teams started the season with high hopes, returning teams that were the best in their respective conferences in 2012, introducing new schemes and excitement yet ultimately finding disappointment in their 2013 openers. Both teams had clearly expected that their overmatched opponents would be mere practice squads that would help in the dress rehearsal for more serious encounters to follow—starting this Saturday with each other. The differences were that Ohio State started at a much higher perceived position, suffered a much less significant game one disappointment—having to settle for a mere 20 point win over a nearly 35 point underdog Buffalo while San Diego State watched FCS Eastern Illinois reel off the last 21 points to win 40-19—and had an opening quarter of football that was as exhilaratingly successful as anyone in Columbus might have imagined.

Now both teams are looking for “rebounds” against an opponent who feels it has much to prove after its opener. One wonders then, if Ohio State does enjoy a bounce back, how impossibly high must the Aztecs improve to keep pace with the Buckeyes? That is a neat little question—on paper that is. The fact that it can be asked with such clarity is exactly why one can and should be concerned—is there a trap awaiting the Buckeyes? Is there anything we can deduce from last week’s carnage?

The Spread, Week 2: Unrivaled

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly recently made comments that kind of made it seem like he didn’t think the school’s football rivalry with Michigan was as big a deal as some other rivalries the Irish are involved in (one assumes he means USC). ESPN decided this meant that Kelly doesn’t consider Michigan a rival at all, an interpretation that is certainly unrelated to the fact that they have a vested interest in getting eyeballs on this game. Mark May and Skip Bayless each wistfully recalled a childhood full of imaginary Wolverine/Irish battles that never actually happened (and in Bayless’ case, featured at least one player that never suited up for either school).

Personally, I find the game quite enjoyable, even though I generally hate both teams. There are a handful of games like that throughout the country, games that don’t require a major rooting interest to enjoy. Our Buckeyes are part of one, at times called the greatest rivalry in sports (although I doubt many outside the two fanbases still believe that). ESPN is currently conducting a survey on the topic, and The Game does indeed occupy the top spot (at least, as of this writing). I don’t think you’d get many unbiased arguments about the top seven or so on that list, order notwithstanding.

So instead of throwing out another list of what some idiot thinks are the best rivalries, I’m going to actually figure it out, at least in terms of competitiveness. Among the factors under consideration here are winning percentage of each team, recent average margin of victory, total number of games played and national championship relevance.

Here are the Top Five:

1. The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party: Bonus points to Florida and Georgia for not even agreeing on how many games they’ve played. This matchup takes the top spot based on impressive numbers in recent competitiveness: The Gators lead over the past 10 years, but only 6-4. Average margin of victory over that span is just 11 points, despite a couple of Florida blowouts. The two teams have a combined 10 BCS bowl appearances, with 7 wins and 2 national titles.

Players to Watch: San Diego State Week 2

San Diego State

Colin Lockett #24:  Despite San Diego State’s embarrassing loss, to FCS side Eatern Illinois, Lockett’s performance was one of the bright spots of the day, for the Aztecs.  Lockett registered 8 catches, for 98 yards, and also had one rushing attempt, for 48 yards, that went for a touchdown.  Lockett is a wide receiver that stands 5-11, 180 pounds, and is a speedster.  The Buckeyes will need to keep Lockett in front of them, and wrap him up whenever they get the opportunity, due to his ability to blow the top off a defense, with one touch of the ball.  Lockett will most likely be matched up against Bradley Roby, so I would expect Lockett to have a pretty quiet afternoon.

B1G Power Rankings- Week 1

Well we have our first week over and done with in the B1G. There were some real high points (Wisconsin, Northwestern, and TTUN). We also had some real low points (Purdue, Iowa, and Nebraska). So lets get to the point of this post and list these bad boys top to bottom based on this weekends games.

1.) Ohio State- Beat Buffalo 40-20. After opening up a big 1st qtr lead of 23-0 and showing a lot of new wrinkles on offense the team went vanilla for 3 qtrs making sure not to show too much of their playbook. The defense played most of the game with 10 new players and played a ton of 1st time players. They gave up 258 yards and 14 points. Not to bad in my opinion. Certainly I hope we see more like the 1st qtr then the last 3 qtrs for the rest of the year.

Five Things I Think: After Week 1!

FootballWeek 1 is nearly in the books with only the matchup between Florida State and Pittsburgh tonight remaining. Jameis Winston, the talented redshirt freshman, will be making his debut as the Seminoles’ starter. Given a supporting cast that includes running backs James Wilder Jr. and Devonta Freeman along with receivers Rashad Greene and Kenny Shaw, Florida State’s offense has to the potential to be very explosive this season. Hopefully, Winston and company will finish off a great first weekend of college football that included several upsets, some Manziel drama, and a few less-than-stellar performances by top teams including #1 Alabama and #2 Ohio State. Sunday’s game between Louisville and Ohio included Teddy Bridgewater playing beautifully, the return of Michael Dyer, and an amazing play by Ohio kick returner Devin Bass in which he shows incredible balance! Watch here!

1. Seven FCS teams beat FBS teams! This is why it doesn’t matter how teams matchup on paper, folks. Anything can happen and it’s that unpredictability that draws us to this game that we love. #25 Oregon State lost to Eastern Washington and Kansas State was brought down by North Dakota State. To be fair, North Dakota State is the two-time defending FCS national champions and Eastern Washington won 11 games last season so it’s not as if these two teams are horrible. Additionally, while KSU was a BCS team last season, it lost a quarterback who was responsible for 68% of its offensive yardage. Southern Utah (who beat South Alabama) and Northern Iowa (who beat Iowa State) each had losing records last season but still had more combined wins (10) than their opponents (8). South Florida (who lost big to McNeese State and UConn (who lost to Towson) but given USF won just three games last season and is in rebuilding mode that wasn’t all that surprising. UConn won just five games last season and we can’t forget that Towson played pretty well against LSU last season. The Eastern Illinois’ 40-19 beat down of San Diego State was the one that was most surprising. San Diego State was a 9-win team last year that beat the likes of Nevada and Boise State, while Eastern Illinois won just seven games and finished its season with a 48-point FCS playoff loss.

B1G Week One Review

Week one is officially in the books for the B1G Conference. Overall it wasn’t a bad start to the 2013 season, but there were some obvious great spots and weak spots. Let’s get to it.

Indiana 73 Indiana State 35

When this game first started I thought Indiana was going to have another close game with the Sycamores. But then the second quarter started and all doubt was erased. The Hoosiers scored 24 (38 unanswered after the first Indiana State touchdown) and it was 45-7 with a minute to go until halftime. Several players saw the field for the Hoosiers, including 3 different quarterbacks. Nate Sudfeld had the best night among the three, throwing for over 200 yards and four touchdowns. Indiana got a lot of playing time for its backups in this game and the Hoosiers started the season off with a definitive win.

Minnesota 51 UNLV 23

Minnesota got the win, but it wasn’t pretty. In fact it was quite ugly at times for the Golden Gophers. I thought they were going to lose at one point. But then the Minnesota defense and special teams came alive in the second half and saved them from an embarrassing defeat. Only up 16-13 to start the second half, Minnesota’s Marcus Jones returned the third quarter kickoff 98 yards for the touchdown. Later in the quarter Martez Shabazz blocked a Rebel field goal attempt and returned it 51 yards for the score. The Minnesota offense was mediocre throughout and I would be concerned about it if I were a Golden Gopher fan.

Boston Celtics forward Jared Sullinger was arrested following a domestic situation over the weekend with his girlfriend.

Police said Sullinger arrived at the police station 6 a.m. Tuesday to turn himself in.

Sullinger is charged with assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and witness intimidation.

According to police, the incident happened early Saturday evening.

Sullinger, who averaged 6 points and almost 6 rebounds per game in 45 games as a rookie last season, is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Waltham District Court.

This is not the kind of thing you ever want to hear about. It is also not something anyone would ever expect from Sully. The hope is that it is not true and that everyone is safe. Troubling charges to say the least.
