  1. So let me get this straight…

PSU plays another cupcake and beats them up…

OSU plays a team that has lead the nation in rushing 5/6 years and played in 6 straight bowl games…and beat them.

PSU jumps OSU because OSU had a tight game?

So the team that played the weaker opponent is rewarded over the team that played the tougher opponent…

  2. Kade – I think earlier in the season it’s more about who might actually be better than who deserves a given spot. Your reasoning would make perfect sense if it were later in the season when teams have “proven” to some extent that they belong in top 10.

Still think Alabama deserves to be higher than USC, though. Playing and beating a top 10 team on the road is way more impressive to me than beating up on weaklings at home, especially when USC was behind 0-3 in the second quarter.

  3. I cannot stand the way that the NCAA ranks teams.

There is no difference between this and “power rankings” we see on ESPN, CNNSI or any of the other sports sites.

Nerds with pencils, paper and a blackberry shouldn’t be able to rank football teams.

Coaches that very rarely get to watch other teams play and have bias shouldn’t be allowed to rank teams.

  4. First of all, I take offense to being called a nerd with pencils, paper and a Blackberry. I use a gel pen and engineering graph paper, thank you very much. And I don’t have a Blackberry. I just wish I had an iPhone.

But, in terms of voting philosophies, especially in the first few weeks, I try to adhere to Brian’s (proprietor of the Blogpoll) suggestion:

The BlogPoll’s concept of the best team in a sentence: the BlogPoll attempts to rank teams in order of season quality. This is impossible to do before the season and silly to do in the first few weeks, and at these times the poll should be regarded as an approximate guess of which teams will end the year with the highest season quality.

I should probably link that in future blogpolls, but you can find it here:

  5. …I didn’t call YOU a nerd…

Plus, you don’t get a vote.

If they are to have polls, they should START around week 4.

  6. Sylvester Yon-Rambo says

    gel pen FTW

  7. Ah, much less offensive without the presence of UofM.
