Hartline Gone; Coleman, Small Staying

OSU FootballBrian Hartline has announced he’s going pro and Ray Small and Kurt Coleman are not.

My initial thoughts are that if the rumors of Hartline discontent with Pryor are true, then that’s the only choice he had. Being best friends with Todd Boeckman and seeing him lose his starting QB job to an upstart freshman certianly could strain a relationship with said freshman. As to Coleman staying, I’m happy. He was definitely coming into his own at the end of the season and played a whale of a game in the Fiesta Bowl. With Small, I’m guess I’m ambivalent at this point. We’ve seen the flashes but not the consitency. I guess we get to have one more year to see what he’s got.

What are your thoughts?

Update: As ahoops pointed out in the comments, Donald Washington has also declared for the draft. I was gone all day yesterday and didn’t get a chance to post anything. I’m not sure Washington made the right choice, an extra year of playing would have benefitted him. I think someone gave him some bad advice. Good luck to him, he’s going to need it.

And in a somewhat OSU related tidbit, Mark Sanchez declared for the draft as well, setting up an interesting story if Mustain wins the starting QB job come next September. He’s not exactly the biggest OSU fan.

  1. Good riddance to Hartline. I always felt he was highly overrated. When we played LSU I remember watching LSU’s offense thinking “Hartline would be about 6th string on this team.” He’s extremely overrated and the slowest deep threat since WWII. Coleman is great, and I feel the same on Small. Sort of just whatever. I would be ecstatic if he put together a coming out year, but he just seems to lack the maturity.

  2. I basically agree with you. Glad to see Hartline go, and very very glad to see Coleman stay. I think Small can make a nice statement this coming year if he gets his act together and works hard (though that’s asking a lot from him).

  3. No comment from Small’s dad? WTF? I thought Tressel was trying to ruin the poor boy.

  4. I’m more concerned about Donald Washington going pro. You can’t blame him for wanting to get paid, but that leaves some ?’s about the defensive backfield next year.

  5. i felt that chekwa stepped up this year and will fill some of the gap left by washington. that being said, i have some questions about chekwa after seeing him in the texas game…
