Justin Layne Interview with MotSaG

When your teammate is one of, if not, the best, players in the state, and is also graduating a year before you, you can often times get over shadowed.  That is not the case with 2016 WR Justin Layne out of Benedictine  High School, in Ohio.  I’m sure everybody that follows recruiting knows Layne’s teammate and good friend, Jerome Baker.  Justin Layne is able to get out of the spotlight of Baker and to make a name for himself by the way he plays the game.  He holds offers from some of the top programs around the Midwest including, Michigan State, *ichigan, WVU, Miami (FL) and Pitt.  Although he does not have an Ohio State offer, it is one that he really wants and the offer would shoot Ohio State up the list right away.  “The Ohio State offer is the one that I want the most.  If they offered, they would be right up there on the top, probably alongside Michigan State,” Layne says.

Because he does not currently hold an offer, it is difficult for him to put Ohio State high on the list.  He is working to change that though.  “They told me they want to evaluate me more and to build a stronger relationship,” Layne told me.  So that they can evaluate him more, he is attending the Columbus NFTC, this weekend, and will also attend the Friday Night Lights Camp in July.  This will give the coaches an opportunity to further evaluate him as a player and even a person.  I asked Justin what it is like to have Jerome considering Ohio State very seriously and if that had any pull in his decision and he said, “I do not know.  We are just focused on a State Championship right now.”

Besides football, did you know that Justin loves to play the guitar?  He also loves to draw as well, (something I give him a lot of credit for because I still draw people as stick figures).  So if football in the long run does not work out, maybe he can become the next Hendrix or Picasso.    When asked what he would say to buckeye fans across the nation he said, “Go Bucks!”  Justin was such a nice and humble person.  When I talked to him he was actually just returning back from summer workouts, so he is already determined for the season.  He wants an Ohio State offer really bad, and to me, if they offered they would be the favorite right up there with Michigan State.

MotSaG Chat With Chris Agyemang

Standing 6-3 and 208 pounds, it is easy to see why Chris Agyemang can play multiple positions on the football field.  For his high school football team, he played LB, DE, and TE.  He is athletic enough to run with receivers in the slot and bat passes down, and then outrun linebackers and catch the ball when the ball changes possession.  While originally a 2015 recruit,  he is doing a repeat year and is transferring to the 2016 class.  He is also changing schools for academic reasons.  His grades are not bad, he told me, he just wanted a better challenge in the classroom.  He will be attending Proctor Academy in the fall, in New Hampshire.  Lots of schools have been showing interest including, Bryant, UPenn, (hey right up the street from my school), and Yale.  Camps that he will be attending this summer include the blue chip football academy, UPenn, UMass, and Bryant, and a few more which he is still trying to figure out.

Chris knows exactly what he is looking for in a school as well.  He told me that academics are more important than football.  “I look for the academics first than football second. I know football isn’t going to last forever so getting a degree is crucial for me. Next thing i look for is being able to help a team get better in any way I can!”  I always love when recruits care more about academics than football.  It is good to care about football as well, but you’re a STUDENT-athlete.  Student.

There is one offer that Chris really wants and that is an Ohio State offer.  He had good things to say about Ohio State, saying, “ I love the tradition Ohio State has to offer! They are a big time school and have produced BIG time players! Great fan base as well! Gameday atmosphere must be crazy!”   Chris knows that he has a lot of work to do in order to earn that Buckeye offer.  Although he does not have much interest from Ohio State right now, it has not discouraged him.  “I got to grind hard everyday for 365. An offer from OSU would be very special to me. But like I said I’m going to do what I can control and that is working hard on and off the field. Patience is a virtue.”  He has the right mindset to earn that offer.  He loves Ohio State and even offered this to Buckeye fans, “Buckeye nation Waddup!! Chris Agyemang, class of 2016 if you don’t hear from me this year wait till next year! Grind time! Check out my tape!”

Hopefully, the extra year in school will do wonders for Chris.  While he is getting lower tier interest from some ivy league schools, he is determined for that Ohio State offers and the determined ones are the hardest working.  It will be interesting to see how Chris’ recruitment develops, especially with that extra year to get bigger and stronger.
